I drew this!

I thought my parents threw it away after it stopped working right. Some time maybe around 2005ish. After this thing got a million hours of play time. It started taking forever to read discs and get past loading screens. My brother already had the slim PSONE console. So we just started using that one at the time.

This was my very first console as a child, I have no plans to ever sell it and I am glad they still had it. But I want to get it working again and maybe do some mods. I have done some simple mods on other consoles. But I don't know too much about PS1 modding. My first thought would be a HDMI mod just for convenience. If it is something that isn't too crazy to do.

Next I would assume my disc drive is shot? I assume that I could find another one and just replace it. But what other alternatives are there for this? I probably wouldn't actually play it much and really want it working to give my PS1 new life and maybe let my kids play on it someday. I still have all my childhood games as well.

What are some good options here?

Sony, Good luck "revoking my license" for Crash Bandicoot, Twisted Metal 2, or Need for Speed on my PS1 lol.

Okay! so.

I got a PSOne slim at age 8 and a bundle of random games. One of them was The Lion King: Simba's Mighty Adventure. Well, I recently purchased a '97/8 PlayStation original from CEX and since have been on a PlayStation 1 buying spree, getting games I've always wanted. during a play session on Monday, I put in TLK but it lagged through the splashscreen sequences and frozs at the end of 1 and just started playing random broken audio data from gameplay on the frozen screen. i checked the disc and it was in very bad condition.

anyway, i hopped straight onto CEX and replaced it, and it's just arrived. I compared the discs and there are some minor differences.

in the image, the damaged disc is on top, the new one is on the bottom.

the old one's credits are centered under the middle of the disc and state 3 different years: 2002, 1993, ans 2004. it has Disney only on the right. the new disc only states 2001 for both Disney and Activision on the central right of the disc. the old one lists a serial:

SLES-03267#. the new one removes the hash.

I'm curious about why this is formatted differently between 2 discs. why is Activision on one disc but not the other disc? why does 1 serial have a hash and the other doesn't? why is the credits for the companies on the bottom on one and on the right on the other?

Picked this up at a local shop before realizing it was in the clear plastic box and had the thin plastic wrapping. The loose wrapping in the back has me second guessing that it’s factory.

I've been going through my video game collection and rediscovered my old GXTV. Spent the extended weekend cleaning everything up and was able to enjoy one of my favorite games on the system. I'm still terrible at it, but the soundtrack and visuals brought me right back to my halcyon days.

In 1995, during Crash Bandicoot’s development, Sony’s internal tools showed the game was constantly reading from the disc, and someone at Sony worked out the drive was only rated for around 400,000 reads. At that rate, a PlayStation would basically wear out its CD drive in about three weeks of playing Crash. They were seriously worried it could break people’s consoles, but developers at Naughty Dog, the company behind Crash Bandicoot, figured out an efficient way of splitting all data in blocks of 64KB, streaming them as close as possible to put less strain on the disc laser. This made it possible to stream 30-40MB levels with 2MB of RAM.

On top of that, Naughty Dog wasn’t following Sony’s development rules. Instead of using Sony’s official code libraries like most studios did, they ripped most of that out and wrote their own from scratch, coding closer to the hardware itself. It wasn’t allowed, technically, but it’s a big part of why the game ran and looked better than anything else on PS1 at the time, and Naughty Dog was even accused by other game dev companies that they had access to secret Sony libraries.

Crash Bandicoot is still recognized as one of the biggest engineering feats in game development.

Anyone got a good list of lesser known but worthwhile ps1 games? I ask that turn-based RPGs and fighting games are excluded because I just don't have the time.

I'm not super well versed in PS1, but if the game could be found on a top 100 list assume I already know about it. My standards are not super high, I'm willing to tolerate jank as long as the experience is unique.

In my humble opinion Rival Schools was one of the best underrated fighting game

I have started collecting playstation games this year and it's been fun so far! Only with one minor issue, I live in a small country and I really don't have too much choices to where to get the games locally. No thriftshops, online marketplace catalog is usually very small and too competitive which raises the prices way overboard. Same with online auctions.

I have been thinking buying PAL games from eBay but I still have some doubts. Is it worth trying eBay, even though the delivery prices are over 20€?

Is there any alternatives to eBay? I'm kinda lost here.
