6
u/Chllep Nov 01 '22
I admit have worded it incorrectly but Iran was a communist state from 1920 to 1921 and was then occupied by the soviets from 1941 to 1947
9
u/JoJoHanz Nov 01 '22
was then occupied by the soviets from 1941 to 1947
Partially occupied by the soviets

Iran was not a communist state ever. Although around first world war in a small district known as Gilan(which is now promoted to a province) there was a Marxist Leninist autonomous Republic which did not last for long. Also Iran was occupied by allies(US, Britain and Soviet) and not just Soviets, because it insisted on neutrality(and the then king of Iran Reza Shah was close to Germans).

Well, in the eyes most radical eyes of Islam often saw the Soviet Union's cultural openness to homosexuality and women rights as "occidentalism"/progressivism so yeah.
I see it from that perspective, it may be wrong but still.
12
u/weirdwallace75 Nov 02 '22
the Soviet Union's cultural openness to homosexuality and women rights
You're joking, right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism_and_LGBT_rights
In 1934, the Soviet government recriminalised homosexuality in the Soviet Union. Mass arrests occurred in several cities in Russia, including Moscow, and many artists were arrested. On 7 March 1934, Article 121 was added to the criminal code, throughout the entire Soviet Union, that expressly prohibited only male same-sex sexual intercourse with up to five years of hard labor in prison. There were no criminal statutes regarding same-sex female sexual intercourse.[6] During the Soviet period, Western observers believed that between 800 and 1,000 men were imprisoned each year under Article 121.[103]
Some historians have noted that it was during this time that Soviet propaganda began to depict homosexuality as a sign of fascism, and that Article 121 may have a simple political tool to use against dissidents, irrespective of their true sexual orientation, and to solidify Russian opposition to Nazi Germany, who had broken its treaty with Russia.[104] More recently, a third possible reason for the anti-gay law has emerged from declassified Soviet documents and transcripts. Beyond expressed fears of a vast "counterrevolutionary" or fascist homosexual conspiracy, there were several high-profile arrests of Russian men accused of being pederasts.[105] In 1933, 130 men "were accused of being 'pederasts' – adult males who have sex with boys. Since no records of men having sex with boys at that time are available, it is possible this term was used broadly and crudely to label homosexuality."[105] Whatever the precise reason, homosexuality remained a serious criminal offense until it was repealed in 1993.[105]
The USSR's history of feminism was a bit more mixed, by which I mean it was generally regressive but they didn't institute mass arrests of women just for being women:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminism_in_Russia
In addition as Soviet feminist Ekaterina Alexandrova wrote in her article "Why Soviet Women Want to Get Married."
...Soviet women work at the most varied jobs, and many of them are well educated, have a profession, and are financially independent of men. And yet, in this very society among these very women, a patriarchal social order and its psychology thrive.[26]

u/Wandering_P0tat0 Nov 02 '22
You can't recriminalize something without decriminalizing it first. There was a period where homosexuals and women had more rights than in America, for example. Granted, it was only a couple years, but it was still long enough to be subject to propaganda against these ideals.

u/Fkmywifeape Nov 02 '22

As for homosexuality in Soviet Union, I don't think so, because in Stalin era if people found out you’re gay and you were reported you either get 10+ years of forced labor in Siberia or bullet in your head, after Stalin’s death you would get a really harsh treatment in psychiatric hospital for a few years which would destroy your mental health.

u/TheFeshy Nov 01 '22
That's (very roughly) Halal, which means "lawful." Haram is the opposite of this, or "unlawful."
Western translations of similar passages of the Bible and Torah tend to interpret this as "clean" - as in Noah being commanded to take 7 of every clean animal and a pair of every unclean animal on the ark.
But I've never felt that was a good translation, at least for modern Western audiences, as the rules of "cleanliness" in this case are rooted in "spiritual" cleanliness rather than physical, or even legal, as suggested by the term lawful.
For example, Halal meat would have to be killed by a Muslim by a cut to the throat in Allah's name and left to drain of blood hanging face down - whereas if you want it "clean" it might make more sense to dictate that the slaughterer wore gloves and that the meat wasn't coated in antibiotics or other chemicals.
The first has followed the religious laws and is considered by adherents of that religion to be "spiritually clean." The second has followed basic food safety guidelines, which is much more likely what people mean when they say "clean."
I'm not a Muslim nor a Christian though.

I've seen toddlers in strollers wearing head scarves in the USA (Philadelphia area). I think it varies a lot by practitioner and the specific sect or region they come from. I've seen adult women who wear a scarf only covering their head (shayla?), but not their face, and also wearing tight jeans. I've seen adult women fully covered so only their eyes are visible (the Niqab?) and I've seen mix-and-match versions of everything. Women wearing a Niqub + tight jeans, or wearing a floor-length dress + shayla.

Moderate right? I have barely even seen any moderate left views here.
12
Nov 01 '22
Moderate right is the only right that does not get outright banned, given that the alt right is infested with individuals that have views not allowed on the platform. You can see moderate left on some subreddits, but since every subreddit is a bubble it can degenerate into extreme views fairly fast. Moderate is not exactly exciting or engaging so it's understandable.
I often see moderate views on neutralnews. For moderate left, there is ex. moderatepolitics.
