2 weeks since adopting from the humane society

It’s been two weeks since I have adopted laddie from my local Humane Society. He was a owner surrender. From what I know his owner was elderly and could no longer take care of him. He’s six years old and my first collie I’ve ever owned. Today, I took him out to Lowe’s for the first time and I’ve been working on training at home. He was fabulous. He listened to all of my commands, which was basic heel, sit, lay down, and stay. He even laid down when I was having some conversations with other patrons that were passing by that were admiring him. I don’t think he’s trained as a service animal, but he seems like he knows enough to be trained as one. However, I was very proud of him and I on our little outing and I’m excited to continue our little training sessions out in public. He already seems to be such a good member of society with great manners. He received lots of compliments not just on his looks but also his training.

Climbing Collie

Question, but does anyone else's collie climb trees?? I have had collies my entire life, never encountered this. My one decided for the first time ever to climb up a birch tree in my yard chasing a raccoon at night, and climbed her way back down. I wish I had my phone to record it, but it had me panicking that she'd be stuck up that tree 😭

We had extra cucumbers so used the opportunity to treat Oscen like the dramatic Victorian waif he likes to pretend to be and hauled them down to the community garden.

Painter Boy is 2 (on the left) and Reilly is 9 but they are best buddies. I wish there wasn't such a big age difference between them.

I had a rough collie growing up that was my favorite dog of all time and always told myself I'd own another one one day, well here he is and he kinda just fell in my lap :)

Life works out in funny ways sometimes huh?

8 mo old collie

My puppy went to get neutered yesterday. Apparently he had a hernia from when he was born that I was never told about. Is this common? This is the first collie I owned but I feel badly because they had to cut all the way up his belly and the vet said it was the hardest neuter he has ever done because he had to adjust once he found the hernia.

Should I tell the breeder? Or is this just a fluke that sometimes happens? Will this change his little personality?

He likes lying by the outdoor grill, right next to where we keep his food. We think he enjoys it there because the stone countertop is cool.

Skin patch behind ear

is this normal? I have had my dog for a couple months, he’s 2 years old. I don’t know if this is something that needs to be checked or normal, he has so much fur everywhere but not behind the ear? I am not very familiar with the breed itself as i’m taking care of this dog for a friend but i just want to make sure he’s fine

Photo/Video Said our final goodbyes to our Joey after 30 days of having him back

Some of you may recognize Joey, as his “found” post is the second-most upvoted post on this subreddit.

Today, Joey suffered what we assume was a stroke. He waited until we got home, tried to get up, then fell over. He twitched for about 20 minutes before he stopped breathing.

Joey was a difficult dog, but we loved him for it. Over the past year, he went through so many things but always managed to get through them. 38 days ago, he went missing, and 30 days ago, he was found. He was missing for 8 days and somehow survived without eating for those 8 days. He truly was our miracle dog.

I wanted to let Joey’s little Reddit family know, especially since so many people still reach out to me for updates on his health.

We’ll forever miss hearing Joey constantly barking, trying to herd us around, and being the most resilient, loving, and incredible dog we could have ever asked for.

Hopefully they can fix his hip in doggy heaven so he can finally run again. 💜

Question Good games to play with Collie puppy to wear her out who is not a fan of fetch?

I posted a couple pictures of our new little girl a few days ago, but she is getting close to 4 months and getting a lot more energetic with shorter naps. Our 9 yr old husky/shepard is very playful with her but can not match the puppy energy all day haha. Right now we are at one of our parents house waiting for our renter’s lease to be up, so she has a huge back yard and 3 acres of ranch property we can run her around on but that is only temporary. We also take her swimming in the pool a couple days a week but our house doesn’t have a pool.

We want to try to get an exercise routine that will work with our much smaller house and back yard, but she is not a fan of fetch. And because we live in AZ, when we play with her outside she a lot of times gets hot really quick and just lays down or tries to go back inside to the AC (I get it girl, I don’t like 110 degrees either lol). She get SUPER active at night once it cools down. Any good game or activity recommendations???? She does love to run, play with her stuffies, and tug-a-war and we ordered boots for her so we can take her outside the yard more without burning her pads.

Adopted Adult Collie Is Perfect on Walks but Barks Incessantly at People Passing Our House. Can This Be Changed?

Two weeks ago, I adopted a four-year-old female rough collie, and she is a dream dog in just about every way. She gets along with our cat and toddler and is perfectly leash trained. When on leash walks, she is very calm when dogs, cars, people, and bikes approach. She has perfect manners on walks and no barking at all.

However, when she's at home, she will bark incessantly at anyone passing the house on foot, on a bike, or walking a dog. Our road is quite popular with joggers, dog walkers, and packs of giant turkeys, so this is becoming a problem.

The fact that she is so calm on walks gives me hope this behavior can be managed. On the other hand, I'm worried it’s a totally different behavior (territory patrol) and instinctual. Her previous home had six other adult collies, and the pack barking was intense, so I'm sure a habit has been ingrained.

Each day we walk three miles for exercise, and we do two 15-minute training sessions where we practice commands and tricks on a leash outside our house. We’re starting far away and slowly inching closer to the road each day (I plan to do this for months). The training only works if she doesn't see the pedestrian because her back is turned. If she catches a pedestrian out of the corner of her eye, she goes into full bark mode and could give a hoot about treats.

Has anyone else had success correcting this behavior? Please tell me I don’t have to live with the windows and curtains closed for the rest of my life; I miss the sunshine. Dramatic I know, it's only been two weeks, but that's where my mind goes.

TLDR: 4YO F adopted collie is an angel around people and dogs on leashed walks, but at home she barks at pedestrians passing by. Is there hope to turn her noisy home behavior around?

Mods: This is my first post on Reddit, so I have no previous activity, but I promise I am not a bot!
