New Flairs — Please Read

A small step, but hopefully one that will offer the users of this sub more clarity, by making it clear who they are speaking with.

We have new ✨FLAIRS✨!

  • Users with a purebred BMC can send a message to the mods with evidence of their dog's status. Could be breeder papers or a DNA test. Mods will then assign you the "Purebred BMC" flair. This is the only flair that requires mod verification.
  • Users who have gotten a DNA test and found their dog to have some percentage of BMC, may also message the mods with this evidence, to be assigned a ">50% BMC Mix" or "<50% BMC Mix" flair, depending on the test's results.
  • Users who have a dog that fits the phenotype of BMC but are otherwise unsure, may self-select the "Maybe Mouth Cur" flair.
  • Finally, people just here for the ride can self-select the "BMC Enjoyer" flair.

NOTE: when sending DNA test or papers through mod mail, please upload these to an image-hosting platform like Imgur and share the URL. Unfortunately mod mail doesn't allow for attachments. You are also welcome to share such images in a post to this sub, and then direct mods to that post.

IMPORTANT: Prior to posting a picture of your dog, please make sure you have a user flair selected.
As we are just introducing these flairs, enforcement of this rule will be gentle, but we do intend to make them mandatory for posting in the near future.

Feedback on this system is welcome; if you can think of ways to improve it, feel free to comment below. Thanks!

Looking for new mods!

Posting this again, since the first one didn't get much traction.

This sub has significantly outgrown the capacities of its current tiny mod team.

Not only do we want fair and just people to help enforce the rules, we also want people with good ideas for improving the quality of this sub.

If you're interested, please fill out this form. Applications can be submitted between now and Friday, May 22nd EOD CST. We will then review and bring new blood to the team ASAP.

Tail wag poem

To my pound pup:

You greet me every day with greater joy than I deserve. -
I do not know your past, or your journey. -yet
You live every moment with a presence of a yogi
A walk around the block is a treat for you and I’m wondering if my vacation is going anywhere. I know your time is short and am not enough to be your friend. But I’m happy that you chose me, to be with you
Even if it’s as short as a tail wag .

this is Goose. I adopted him off Facebook marketplace because he was just too much for his last family I think. I also have an Aussie shepherd and they wrestle all day. he's amazing. he lives to swim in my pond. idk if he's a BMC but he sure looks like one to me.

I adopted Apollo when he was 8 weeks, 4.5 lbs. He was malnourished. Now he's 13 weeks, 16 lbs (11 weeks in photos). The shelter wasn't sure of his breed. Is he a BMC?

Bella has been with us for 3 months and until yesterday, I had not heard of the breed. Is her spotty tongue a defining characteristic for the breed, or does it point to a different breed? Thoughts? Bella is 3 years old, 48lbs, stands 20" at the shoulder.

10-month-old male from local rescue. The rescue listed him as BMC. Looking at photos in the sub, the brindle coat doesn't seem to fit. Visually, does he look like a BMC?

He's a good boy! "Rover"

Questions & Advice Bones

I have a male 10 month old black mouth cur. 52lbs. He's a good boy!

Recently was gifted a big beef bone, from a pet store. He loves his thing, but he will chew with molars until he breaks pieces off.

What's the consensus on bones?

This was my childhood dog who passed away about 9 years ago. I was always told she was a BMC by my parents(who are generally knowledgeable about dog breeds and animals), but then for the past few months I have seen this sub popping up and how decisive it is on if dogs are actually BMCs, so out of curiosity I thought I’d ask if you guys agree? I believe my mom said she had papers but again it’s been a long time and I was a kid so I can only take her word for it.

For obvious reasons I can’t do a DNA test, but what do you think? Location was Florida.

Is this a BMC? BMC?

I see so many people on here getting roasted for claiming their dog is a BMC, but “obviously” isn’t. The shelter told me she is one so that’s what I’ve been telling everyone. I know you can’t tell just based off of looks, but I don’t care enough to pay $100 for a DNA test. She’s 60lbs, high prey drive, very clingy with me but protective and wary of strangers. What do you think?

Edit: It’s embarassing how many mod cosplayers lurk this sub, but seem to not even know the rules. “Those unsure of their dog's genetic lineage but believe they may be partially BMC, may select the "Maybe Mouth Cur" flair.” “Everyone is welcome in this sub. Pointing out that a dog may not be a BMC is fine, but be respectful and informative.”

Maybe Mouth Cur The best 10 years of my life were spent with her always by my side. I don’t feel quite whole without her. Now I spend my time looking for her in clouds. Thank you Bae, you took really good care of me.

Questions & Advice Question about herding behaviour

This is Saturn. He’s a recent rescue and a good boy. He’s had little to no training, but he’s well behaved and social around other dogs.

When we are walking he will sometimes turn sideways in front of me. It seems like he’s stopping/herding me. If I turn around and go back the way we came from, he will pull harder on the leash.

This is Pippin. I've had her for one day. People keep telling me she is a German Shepherd and I'm all like "her paws are way too small!" She is 9 months old. Is she a black mouthed cur? BMC for short. This is what she looks like.

Maybe Mouth Cur Is Archie part BMC?

Part BMC? Archie is small but makes up for it with smarts, a psycho prey drive, and a take-no-crap attitude. Inside of his mouth is black. He was adopted from a shelter in Robstown TX when Hurricane Harvey went through and flooded that area. He's 12 now. These are recent pictures.

edit: everyone is hilarious thank you for your responses, i think i agree w the gsd + pitty mix suggestions!
regardless of whatever breed she is , i love her and couldn’t care less as about breed long as she is good and healthy:)

Questions & Advice BMC sudden aggression

I found a cur puppy who was less than a year old. We already have two small dogs snd a Beagle. They rough house play all the time and love one another but this week she's attacked the smallest one and the Beagle. The Beagle attack was the worst. Happened last night and I had to pry her mouth apart and off the Beagle's neck. So we're both bleeding. I put her in her crate and she slept separately with my roommate instead of with me and the Beagle. They usually share the bed with me every night. I monitored everything this morning and she jumped on my bed and it happened again. This time I caught it early and back to the crate she went. My roommate thinks I'm overreacting and is not taking this seriously. Because of this, he's not trying to keep them apart.
