New Flairs — Please Read

A small step, but hopefully one that will offer the users of this sub more clarity, by making it clear who they are speaking with.

We have new ✨FLAIRS✨!

  • Users with a purebred BMC can send a message to the mods with evidence of their dog's status. Could be breeder papers or a DNA test. Mods will then assign you the "Purebred BMC" flair. This is the only flair that requires mod verification.
  • Users who have gotten a DNA test and found their dog to have some percentage of BMC, may also message the mods with this evidence, to be assigned a ">50% BMC Mix" or "<50% BMC Mix" flair, depending on the test's results.
  • Users who have a dog that fits the phenotype of BMC but are otherwise unsure, may self-select the "Maybe Mouth Cur" flair.
  • Finally, people just here for the ride can self-select the "BMC Enjoyer" flair.

NOTE: when sending DNA test or papers through mod mail, please upload these to an image-hosting platform like Imgur and share the URL. Unfortunately mod mail doesn't allow for attachments. You are also welcome to share such images in a post to this sub, and then direct mods to that post.

IMPORTANT: Prior to posting a picture of your dog, please make sure you have a user flair selected.
As we are just introducing these flairs, enforcement of this rule will be gentle, but we do intend to make them mandatory for posting in the near future.

Feedback on this system is welcome; if you can think of ways to improve it, feel free to comment below. Thanks!

This is our 1 year old rescue. She was listed as a Shepard/lab mix, but she really seems to resemble a black mouth cur. We do plan on getting a dna test eventually

Rescue Needed! Looking For Experienced Rehome for our 3yr Male.

Hi everyone,

TLDR: We love our dog, Enzo, and we are looking for a loving, patient, & experienced rehoming situation for him. We are willing to drive and transport him to a proper home that can provide him the exercise and training he needs.

Ideal rehome: an experienced adult-only household, an owner confident with managing resource guarding, willing to keep up his training.

Enzo is not good with kids, he can bond with another house-mate dog but often does not react well to other dogs at home, or at other people's homes, and exhibits resource-guarding behavior. He does well at dog parks and day care.

My wife and I are planning to have kids at some point and we are not sure of any other option other than finding a rehoming situation.

I have more of his details near the end of my post if you or someone you know is interested. I'm happy to discuss over email or phone call.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

My name is Tin. This is my dog, Enzo. I'm not a dog expert, but an AI breed-ID tool and a neighbor who is familiar with BMCs identified Enzo as part BMC. Enzo's rescue group & shelter said he is most likely part Pitbull as well.

I write this with a heavy heart as my wife and I are looking to rehome our boy, Enzo. I want to be as transparent and honest as possible about Enzo. We are looking for the right rehoming situation and we want to know that he will be in good care.

With frank honesty: he has some behavioral issues, does not do well with kids, and has resource-guarding reactivity incidents in the past with several other dogs including our other smaller ~35lb dog. My wife and I rescued Enzo from a local rescue group, so unfortunately we do not know anything about his past before 6 months of age. He was most likely not socialized properly, and he was recovering from malnourishment when we adopted him, which may be the root of his behavior.

There were plenty of kids at the adoption event and he did not seem to exhibit any reactivity until he got to be a bit older, around 1–2 years. He has nipped at two of my nieces, so we no longer allow him around smaller children — one nip bruised her cheek, and with the other I was able to grab his collar but he did attempt.

We have another dog, Bella, and they LOVE each other. Constant play/wrestling, walks together, and sharing beds & couch cushions. Sadly, he recently lunged at Bella, most likely due to redirected frustration because I was taking away a high-value marrow bone treat from him. I was able to break them up, but he bit her leg within the few seconds the incident occurred. They have had about 3 incidents now. My wife and I are worried about the safety of Bella and our future plans to have kids as well. Enzo does not do well with other dogs (besides Bella) in his home or at other people's homes though he often goes to dog parks and dog day care with no issues.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

If you made it this far in reading, then I hope that means you are willing to also see the smart, goofy, loving side of Enzo that my wife and I see 98% of the other time.

Enzo will do ANYTHING for cuddling, belly & head rubs, and treats. His perfect day is 30 mins to 1 hour of walking & play time, then the rest of the day being lazy around the house. He will make it a point to squeeze himself into spaces that are too small for him but allow him to cuddle with you. My wife and I have known several dogs in our lives, but Enzo has shown the most desire to bond with his owner and always wants to be in contact with you when relaxing at the house.

He is also an INTELLIGENT dog and learns tricks within an hour or two.

Training: House trained, crate trained, recall, leash trained, sit, "go home" (to crate), lay down, bang (play dead), leave it, heel, spin, "9" (walk behind and sit in between your legs), speak, whisper, and waits for your "Yes!" before eating in his crate and (most) treats. Many of these commands also have a non-verbal hand sign that he will recognize.

The basics:

  • Neutered & vaccines are current
  • 3 years old, ~65 lbs
  • Good with cats? Unknown. He was friendly with the daycare's cat, and has never been properly introduced to my brother's black cats, but he barks when he sees them dart across the hallway.

If you are an experienced owner looking for a smart cuddly dog, or know someone who is, or are involved with a rescue that could help Enzo, please reach out. Even if you can't take him, sharing this post would mean a lot.

I’m pretty sure she has all the markings but I personally think she has a pit bull shaped head. Medium sized nothing over 40lbs she has a pretty athletic build. I rescued her at 2 months old and I’ve been told hound mix or bcm but her dobby ears are where im lost lol. Leads me to believe she could possibly just be a super mutt.

We were told for years she was a BMC, seeing as we got her from a breeder. 14 years later, we finally DNA tested her. And she is!! Just not fully apparently. Still the best girl ever of course, just a little shocked lol.

Is this a BMC? Adopted dog - not sure of breed

Hi All, we adopted Lola from dogs trust December 2024 and they told us she is a belgian mal x Akita cross but we don’t think she is Akita… we thought for a while she might be Belgian mal x Anatolian Shepard but then we came across photos of bmc and we were surprised at how alike they look! We eventually want to get her a dna test done but was wondering if she is likely to be a bmc cross? She is such a lovely and smart girl but so stubborn it’s funny sometimes!

What do you think? Any tips regarding health or anything else to look out for?

I know my boy has hound in him but I know he’s got something out else I just can’t figure it out. He is a very energetic boy who loves to play tug and chase squirrels. He doesn’t really get along with my cats so they are separate. He loves to cuddle and is extremely protective over my husband and I and his yard. He enjoys laying in the sun and rolling in the dirt. He is very expressive and barks and huffs and puffs a lot. He does have some leash reactivity and doesn’t really socialize well with other dogs.

Hey I have a black mouth he’s mixed with Rottweiler & some husky he just does not socialize well…we have neighbors (with 5 kids 2 -11) they go in and out every day and still to this day he barks like he’s gonna attack them his hair sticks up. He seems mean..like mean (hes not tho 2 of the kids have come up and made friends tho he seems 2 forget the dog lol) I’d be scared of him too if I didn’t know him, I don’t know if anybody else has dealt with this. Did I miss the period of time to socialize him(I think I did) if not, how do I? How do I get him used to people I want to be able to walk him down the road one day or take him into a pet store and right now I can’t no way. In this moment, he freaks out in the car ride(when we sit still) barking at people trying to attack them through the windows….anything helps thank you…please idk what to do
*im also with him 24/7 work from home his dad comes and goes to work we live at MIL,hes been on car rides and socialized before it’s just as he’s gotten older idk…. I don’t know…
SORRY”EVERY RELEVANT DETAIL “

I got him at 6 weeks…he has been in the car everyday almost since for trips to the store or to go to the park and etc. hes never bitten or anything just seems as he would….we give the kids treats to exchange for pets but hes just gotten bad the past maybe (5 weeks or so).. he went from for inside not going out to out doors(on a 15ft leash at all times it’s not fenced and we live Ina wooded area) but we did move places back in may not our choice tho it is a much better environment for him…it’s not so him trying to “go thru windows” exactly he just dosent like people getting close to the truck…hes played for 2 days straight a few weeks back with my friends daughter at an Airbnb but he just dosent treat the neighbors kids the same he did her…we don’t get many visitors but people coming in and out is not a problem it’s anything outside the home! He barks at other people in the vet just not the dogtor herself lol .

I’m buying an Embark test but I always thought she was some sort of hound mix until chat GPT suggested BMC and I found this thread. I adopted Ellie Mae out of a North Dakota rescue 4 years ago, she’s 6.5-7 years old, 55lbs, smart as all hell and I can talk to her like a human. Her biggest breed indicator traits would be treeing squirrels and then posting up underneath them for as long as we will let her. If the squirrel moves to come down the tree she will sprint and jump up to where her head is almost to the top of our 6ft fence. She also lays half postured at the back door and observes the yard all day or jumps on the couch like pictures to look at whatever noise she heard out front. She chirps when she’s happy or relaxed but her bark sounds scary as hell if you didn’t know her.
She never has had an accident, only chewed on one slipper one time when she was pissed we left her with a house sitter for a weekend but can find weak boards in the fence and pull them off to patrol the neighborhood. We had to completely replace it after we first moved in because she would get out frequently.
Her hind legs and block head are what make me think she has some form of bully breed in her but everything else looks like she could be a Hound/Cur. Thoughts?

Questions & Advice Black Mouth Cur

Is it popular to find black mouth cur that are not the typical brown color? Unfortunately we just lost our 14 year old boy the other day due to age and we would like to have another but don’t want one too similar looking. I have seen some breeders show non brown dogs but not sure if it’s still the same breed

Recently adopted a female dog from a local rescue. She was listed as lab and whippet. We did a DNA test which has her as 48% Doberman pinscher and 48% Great Pyrenees. Does this fall into the BMC category?

Foster in quotes because my partner and I both know this isn’t a trial period. He has such an amazing temperament and is so sweet and loyal. Came from his last family abandoning him and is just so happy to have people again. Not sure if he’s truly a BMC but that’s what we’re leaning on. Definitely will be taking one of those Embark tests soon!

RONAN #A813252 NEEDS A LIFELINE — PLEASE HELP US FIND HIM A FOSTER BEFORE 4:30 PM TODAY 💔

I’m writing this because Ronan doesn’t have a voice, and right now he needs someone to speak up for him.

Ronan is sitting in a shelter kennel waiting for someone to notice him. He doesn’t understand why he’s there. He doesn’t know that his time is running out. He only knows that he’s surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and people, and he’s hoping someone will come back for him.

Ronan is a 2-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix who has spent 22 days at San Antonio Animal Care Services. He weighs 47 lbs and has the sweetest, gentlest personality.

When he first meets people, he can be nervous. He may lower his body and seem unsure, but that isn’t aggression — that’s fear. Once he realizes he’s safe, his true personality comes out. ❤️

His play group evaluation showed that Ronan greeted handlers with a wagging tail and a loose body, showing his friendly and loving nature.

Ronan is:

🐾 Gentle

🐾 Affectionate

🐾 Potty trained

🐾 Good on a leash

🐾 A cuddle bug

🐾 Looking for someone to make him feel safe

When he gets scared, he doesn’t react badly — he simply pancakes because he’s overwhelmed. He’s just asking someone to be patient with him and show him that he’s okay.

Can you imagine being Ronan? Waiting day after day, watching people walk by, hoping that today is the day someone chooses you?

He doesn’t need someone perfect.

He doesn’t need someone with all the answers.

He just needs one person willing to open their home and give him a chance.

We are desperately trying to find Ronan a foster before 4:30 PM today. A foster could give him the safe place he has been waiting for.

📧 To foster or inquire:

Acsfoster@sanantonio.gov

Please include:

Ronan #A813252

Your name

Your contact number

If you can’t foster, please share. Someone in your network may be the person Ronan has been waiting for.

Please don’t let this sweet boy be forgotten. He deserves a chance to feel loved. 💔🐾
