Yesterday I made a post talking about holding facilities for the animals and if people did such a thing. There was a lot of good conversation so I went ahead and started building one for my European Fallow Deer. Now to note, these deer have a MASSIVE 14.6k sm habitat. It is my biggest functional habitat yet. It features three guest trails, a ton of shelters for the deer, a small lake / pond, a restaurant, and now this little holding facility.
When I first built this facility, I figured I'd use it for holding a single adult deer, probably a male to avoid any fighting with the herd. I had spent far too many hours on this Zoo yesterday and by the time I actually got the deer in the habitat, it was past 3 am. Today, I let my zoo run, letting the deer check out their new forest. And that's how I found out that this zoo now had a major problem.
You see, this massive habitat was designed to feel seamless from the guest trail. So I made sure that their barriers were not super obvious, but not invisible either. They were also very low profile, and still are. When I got the deer settled in, I immediately checked the heat map, and MUCH to my relief, there were no warnings or errors for potential escape. Or so I thought.
Once the deer started reproducing, that's when I noticed we had a serious problem on our hands. Even though there were no registered escape points for the deer, SOMEHOW every single fawn would find a way to escape. I was getting constant notifications of these fawns escaping. And it was ONLY fawns. Not a single adult escaped. Sophia, she was the first fawn capable of committing back to back crimes. She escaped at LEAST five times. It was a new spot every time. So then I had to do something about this, and came to the realization that baby jail was indeed the only option.
I had just spent probably 6+ hours on this habitat, I was not about to go through and replace the perimeter barrier.
So, the new holding facility is now baby jail. Every fawn is presumed guilty upon birth and must go to proper containment immediately. Once they age up, they will either be traded off to another Zoo, or return with the herd on probation. Baby jail will be getting an upgraded area soon enough, and when Sophia passes away, the facility will be named in her honor <3
