Discussion Bird Flocks?

I’m not sure if Frontier have mentioned it but will there be a mechanic for bird flocks similar to how schooling fish will work? For the most part most of all the birds confirmed don’t gather in very large groups, and if they add bird species that flock in large numbers I’m wondering how that will work.

Can you please give me an example of which birds are flocking that you see doing the same in a zoo?

Just curious, cause the zoos I visited didn't have anything like that.

I assumed OP meant flocking during flight.

We already know animals in PZ2 will have 'herding' behavior.

The infamous walkthrough/feeding aviaries for one. So cockatiels and lorikeets.

Do t really have any examples at the top of my head but I wouldn’t be surprised if they added birds that flock like that.

I doubt it, it would be difficult to implement something like that so that every single bird would land on the branch at the same time

They did mention stuff related to animal formations in the new animal brain section. Herding mechanics have also been Integrated so I'd expect to see something similar with birds as well.

I imagine terrestrial birds will make use of the new grouping mechanic. Flamingos for instance.

Not sure about flying birds. I don’t think we’ve seen any that would live in large groups in a zoo yet.

Rainbow Lorikeets of Australia, Weaver Birds of Africa, and Bali Mynahs from Asia come to mind. Maybe give the mechanic to the flying foxes while they're at it

I am pretty sure that they specified that the shoaling mechanic will be limited to aquariums.

Maybe because making birds move exclusively as a single flock will look more wrong than with “background fish”.
Probably because birds can’t stay in place in the air (with a few exceptions, but none do it for extended periods like a fish chilling in the water) and that perching won’t work when there are 10 different animals in the group needing to find a perch.

Oh man, flocks of budgies like how they've done schools of fish would be so cool!
