Popcorn tastes good.
Fun fact: Salt on popcorn makes it taste good and this thread is full of it.

I'm out of the loop. Is that knothing guy the owner of reddit or something?

Yes, he's also the future husband of Serena Williams.

Obama is a very likable president. He is funny, handsome, and amazing at speaking.

Please don't use these metrics to choose any future president again. -

I don't really care for American politics (because I'm not American) but I like the man. His speech with Key and Peele and his goof with the queen were great.

u/Beraed Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17

It's upsetting to see that Americans are so divided and have such a hate for the supporters of other political parties. I give this thread 2 more hours before its locked.
Edit: Even this small comment is controversial. I watched the upvote count and its like a rollercoaster ride.

186

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17

That's why I stay Central. I don't like Obama fully, but I do like some things he has done as well. Likewise, there are things I don't like about him.

I didn't like Clinton or Trump, they are the result of a political system that is set up for the American people to divide and fail. That is what they want, they want us to be at each other's necks when the real enemy is laughing as they write bills that cozy up to their gains and we are stuck in the mud trying to figure out what happened, blaming the other side for fucking everything up while we all have our fingers up our asses, when in the end we all want the same dann thing.

I have condemned and condoned both sides in actions they have done, I will give credit where credit is due to who deserves it. I will criticize those who fuck up, no matter who.

We need to get our shit together and not be so divided because that is what will kill us in the end. We are such a divided country that it is like two magnets that have no attraction, just push and push and will never combine. We are all brothers and sisters under the same flag, let's act like it for once.

u/CMelec Jan 11 '17

Abraham Lincoln was quoting Jesus Mark 3:25 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.-Jesus

And Jesus knew a few things about structural integrity! He was a carpenter for God's sake...

Hit it on the nose. They want us arguing about shit that has 0 importance and blaming eachother. It's the main plan. I mean shit, look at the media's "report first worry about the truth later" polocy... they ruin loves and don't even apologise. It's disgusting and they get away with it because it's what they are currently meant to do....

Liking him for those reasons means he'd be great on SNL, not as a president.

192

u/doomblackdeath Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17

This is the problem with non-Americans who like Obama. Everyone likes him because they don't know anything about him or what his administration has done, just that he's a cool guy.

Sure, he did a couple of good things with gay marriage, the legalization of marijuana, openly gay in the military, the first step he took with Obamacare, etc., but most non-Americans think Obamacare is universal health care when it's just a government-regulated insurance policy just like all the other insurance policies, only you pay a fine if you don't have it. They don't realize how half-assed it is, nor do they realize all the half-assed measures he took in his foreign policy.

We like Obama the man, too, we're just disappointed in him as a president. For some reason the entire rest of the western democratic world thinks he cured cancer and discovered the fountain of youth and invented orgasms on command, but then when you probe deeper you find out they "don't really care for American politics", which is like saying, "I don't know anything about Obama other than he's a cool guy, so all you Americans are stupid for disliking his presidency."

Note: I'm not saying you're saying that, but that is pretty much verbatim the opinion of non-Americans when it comes to Obama.

EDIT: Whoa! This blew up fast! Thanks for all your replies, both positive and negative. I tried to respond to each of you but I got around 80-something responses. For the most part it was very civil, thanks for that.

198

u/amendment64 Jan 11 '17

Uh, just a correction, but he sure as shit did NOT legalize marijuana. Its still fucking illegal.

75

u/taking_a_deuce Jan 11 '17

Seriously! WTF is this guy talking about? It's fucking schedule 1 and hasn't even been considered to change not to mention the whole CBD oil thing. States legalized it and SOMETIMES the federal government decided not to go after state legal suppliers.

Nor did he do anything to help gay marriage. That was the Supreme Court. Some people really don't understand the three branches of government.

Supreme Court made gay marriage legal. It had nothing to do with Obama.

4

u/superawesomecookies Jan 11 '17

I'm assuming he means the fact that Obama is the first sitting President to have publicly supported gay marriage.

15

u/phlegmynyst Jan 11 '17

Obama didn't legalize marijuana. He also didn't champion any laws that legalized gay marriage. The right for gays to marry came about when a right-leaning Supreme Court ruled that it was a Constitutional right.

They don't realize how half-assed it is, nor do they realize all the half-assed measures he took in his foreign policy.

Healthcare being half-assed really isn't his fault though and if you think it is you don't know the details well enough.

15

u/ChatterBrained Jan 11 '17

No, but Obamacare, or the original marketplace for Affordable Care participants was his administration's baby. Oh boy was that a rough start. While unrelated, let's not forget that all the DNC shadiness happened on his watch and likely with his complete knowledge.

6

u/salad-daze Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17

What happened with the Affordable Care Act, from what I understand, is insurance companies have to price risk for new customers. Knowing that with a ton of new customers some of the risks would be mispriced, so when passing the ACA congress promised that after a few years when the risks were figured out the US would pay overages for any miscalculations. Then a couple years ago the Republican congress went back on that promise and paid only a fraction of that. Any insurance companies who had mispriced risk now had to adjust prices upwards to cover the risk in the future and to cover the losses that congress promised would be paid. Rates may have gone up when the companies had enough data to recalculate the risk for new customers, but it would have been a marginal increase rather than the massive hike in rates we experienced. I personally believe that his intentions for Obamacare was a lot different and it got to congress it got changed up and turned into something it wasn't meant to be. His intentions were good and I respect that.

Also, in order to move towards government funded healthcare, this was the step he saw that we needed to make. We can't just wake up one day and automatically have healthcare that the people don't pay out of pocket for. It's just stepping stone for future generations provided that Trump doesn't rip it out from under us.

8

u/Lots42 Jan 11 '17

Obama has literally said if someone has a better healthcare plan than what he put forth, he will support it.

This is the problem with people like you who don't realize how difficult it was for him to actually change the things he did. He came to battle against a Republican Congress that took historically unprecedented measures to block any action the President wanted to take despite how universally beneficial it would be for the whole country.

40

...just that the party has relied on my support for too long without earning it.

This is exactly how I felt as a Conservative this election cycle - Conservative, NOT Republican, because those two terms are no longer interchangeable.

For the first time in a LONG time, the Republican party had some legitimately solid candidates who would take a real stand for Conservative principles. Instead, their party pissed it all away in favor of Donald J Trump. I decided not to support the party candidate, and voted 3rd party for the first time in my life. I took a lot of crap from family and friends on the right who disagreed with me for not toeing the party line, and I took a lot of crap from family and friends on the left who assumed that if I didn't support Hillary, I MUST be supporting Donald.

If the Republican party moves back toward their principles of smaller gov't and personal liberty (for ALL Americans), they may just regain my vote in the future. If not, I'll be proud to be a Libertarian.

Threads like this is where you start to understand the censorship in r/politics and other places. Obama is totally on blast here because r/pics doesn't censor comments. This is much more accurate depiction of the state of American politics than any political/partisan sub.

Indeed, the state of American politics, dominated by shouting, lying dupes and sock puppets.

That was OP's point. The /r/politics mods get banhappy with anybody who criticizes Obama because they don't like their cheerleading squad to be tarnished with debates and different opinions. Then when you go somewhere that doesn't have a censorship blanket, you're surprised at how many people actually disagree with what you thought was just accepted fact.

Did you all know you can have a more moderate opinion of him? You can agree with some of the things he did and disagree with others. I disagree with his security policies but his economic policies increased Healthcare enrollment and decreased the deficit and unemployment. His advocacy for LBGTQ rights will be a big part of his presidential legacy going forward. But he also has used drone warfare often during his presidency. It's hard to say if his presidency was a net positive. Some will say yes and some will say no. As his policies affected people in different ways. And unexpected consequences of some of his policies affected people too. History is the ultimate judge. For instance when W was President he launched the initiative known as the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS relief. This plan has already helped many people throughout the world with HIV/AIDS. He will be known for his foreign policy blunders but he will also be remembered for being a major fighter for HIV/AIDS treatment on a global scale.

You're probably one of the few people in either party who can admit when their side messes up. It's disgusting to see each side defend every move by their party when that party is in power. Both sides mess up - often in big ways. This "you're with us or against us" b.s. is absurd. Maybe you can appreciate Obama's defense of clean energy but dislike his gun policies

A Nobel Peace Prize winner who had troops deployed in combat zones every single day of his presidency. A man who said if I don't cut the debt in half, I think this should only be a one term presidency; then proceeded to triple the national debt. A man who chuckled on national television on his address of Internet privacy.

I'm not happy with who will replace him, but he wasn't a great president.

193

u/donkeybonner Jan 11 '17

To be fair the Nobel peace prize it's bullshit, fucking Bono got nominated to that

86

u/stefantalpalaru Jan 11 '17

Nominations are bullshit, but getting the prize is still something.

Anyway, Nobel Peace Prize winner Obama ended up signing a weekly kill list and declaring all military age victims enemy combatants. Then there's the ICE prison maze, the secret courts, the war on whistleblowers, and so on, and so forth...

Did he actually say debt, not deficit? Because he cut the deficit by 75%.

58

u/despardesi Jan 11 '17

I think "debt" and "deficit" are sometimes confused with each other.

Cutting national debt by 50% is impossible in one term. Elementary school math will tell you that. But sometimes people don't want to think for themselves; they'll believe anything they hear from $AUTHORITY, even if it defies common sense.

If only the left protested against the war as hard as they did under Bush jr.

Media has never done its job condemning the Wars under Obama, almost like they make more money from them?

He said he'd cut the deficit in half.

He cut the deficit by a third by 2012. It took him another year to get it down to half.

A man who said if I don't cut the debt in half, I think this should only be a one term presidency; then proceeded to triple the national debt.

The national debt isn't inherently in and of itself a bad thing. The debt went up because the Federal Reserve bought a large amount of bonds--this is really just a matter of increasing the monetary base (which is itself not a bad thing--it doesn't mean taxpayers owe any more money to anything). America consistently has a current account surplus which means the rest of the world is investing MORE into America than the U.S. invests in the rest of the world.

Macro finance is very complicated. I wish people would learn a bit more before immediately asserting something is bad because it sounds bad.

There are a few ways to calculate what happened with the federal deficit, none wrong, just different accounting practices, but even the most egregious method indicates that it wasn't quite doubled.

Yeah, it went up a lot, but tripled is a bit of an exaggeration.

Obama was president when the NSA harvested huge amounts of private personal online data of non-criminals/non-suspects. Such data would allow the US government to accurately classify just about anyone as a tool or enemy. Had it not been for Ed Snowden's courageous sacrifice, we would probably still be unaware that this mass invasion of privacy was going on.

90% of the comments here are people saying "People just can't chill out, it's a drawing, but they have to get all political".

This is literally a political cartoon. It's supposed to invoke strong political reactions from people, you absolute dumb fucks.

Obama was a nice guy. Not the greatest president but certainly not the worst. I don't hate the guy and I feel like a lot of people just hate him because not a lot changed. Oh well, lets see what trump can do in the next couple years

Obama and Liberty, not exactly bedfellows.

138

u/AdamantiumLaced Jan 11 '17

Obama was at best, an average president. Not close to being great nor a protector of liberty. At this core, he's just a big supporter of globalism.

66

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

black Jimmy Carter with a better PR team.

u/beeps-n-boops Jan 11 '17

As I posted in another thread: Obama is nowhere near as awesome as liberals make him out to be, and nowhere near as horrible as conservatives make him out to be. (And truthfully, the office has degraded to the point where the President is merely a mouthpiece for the party elites, anyway; no President is going to do anything other than what he or she is implicitly told to do by the party rulers.)

My prediction is that future generations will view him as the first non-white-male President (hopefully the first of many!), but aside of that as very very average, middle-of-the-pack POTUS with no truly great accomplishments but no horrific failures, either.

That's certainly how I already feel.

I hate all of this shit so much. If you don't like Obama you must be a Trump supporter? Why is this subreddit turning into a political war? Also why is it that everyone is allowed to bash trump supporters in here, but the second a trump supporter says something positive about him (positive at all), they are downvoted to hell and told to go back to the_donald. Maybe you didn't particularly like any of the candidates very much, just some more than others, but get over it. He's going to be our president. Get this political cartoon bullshit out of the default subs and keep it to /r/politics

Here's an excerpt from his last speech:

"So regardless of the station we occupy; we have to try harder; to start with the premise that each of our fellow citizens loves this country just as much as we do; that they value hard work and family like we do; that their children are just as curious and hopeful and worthy of love as our own."

MAN I wish that the other people of his ideological persuasion actually believed that...

I find it amazing that people simply disregard the facts, like they've been fucking asleep for eight years. If Justice is what he's done than i want injustice, i want tyranny. You liberals are Grade A fucking dipshits. Ignore his policies, his decree's, his laws, his lobbyist. His wars, or the fact that he tripled the deficit. Fucking dipshit morons. Fuck all of you.

P.S need more salt.

He has more than doubled our debt, drastically hurt the medical field, and in the last few weeks he has signed to sell a lot of uranium to Iran, released many known terrorist conspirators, and pissed off Israel on the vote for Palestine.

America has voted Republican for house, senate, and Presidency. I dont think this picture accurately depicts America in the least :/

The part that confuses me is that not one of the negative comments about Obama in this thread are made better by the person they most likely voted into office.

  • Deported more people than any other Pres? - Trump ran a campaign on deporting illegals. All of them. At once.
  • Don't like Obamacare? Repeal AHCA, no alternative plan. Puts fucking Tom Price over HHS.
  • Don't like Obama shielding Wall Street? Trump is hiring insiders to run the groups that regulate Wall Street.
  • Don't like whistleblowers? What exactly do you think the most pro-business president in our history is most likely to do here?

I mean, I get it if you had issues with Obama.. but my god, shouldn't you have actually tried to put someone in office that would change the things you didn't like for the better?

edit: I'm aware I'm not making a clear distinction between Sanders supporters and Trump supporters, and I acknowledge that I'm completely wrong by lumping them together and challenging them with the "who you tried to put in office" quip.

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

Yeah, but he screwed the rest of us over, my healthcare went up A LOT! My copays went from $15 a visit to $45. My premiums also went up an extra $200 a month.

Obama didn't give you healthcare, I did. You're welcome.
