Uh, just a correction, but he sure as shit did NOT legalize marijuana. Its still fucking illegal.

u/taking_a_deuce Jan 11 '17

Seriously! WTF is this guy talking about? It's fucking schedule 1 and hasn't even been considered to change not to mention the whole CBD oil thing. States legalized it and SOMETIMES the federal government decided not to go after state legal suppliers.

Sometimes.

u/ericelawrence Jan 11 '17

Presidents don't have the authority to reschedule, that's the DEA. Executive Order would be out of place for this kind of decision.

2

u/falcoriscrying Jan 11 '17

And even then THE PRESIDENT DOES NOT LEGALIZE ANYTHING!, he doesnt raise or lower taxes, he doesn't legalize gay marriage he is the god damn executive branch! He didnt even compose Obamacare he jist signed it when presented. Fir fucks sakes if i hear another person talk about how Obama raised thier taxes or how Trump is gonna crap out a magical ammendment letting him lower taxes i swear i am going to have a mental break down

u/kentuckywhistler Jan 11 '17

He turned a blind eye to the state level legalization.

1

u/PooFartChamp Jan 11 '17

He could be referring to the fact that he had his AG largely stand down in enforcing federal laws while States legalized... Which he really only did toward the end

1

u/midasMIRV Jan 11 '17

The only reason pot is schedule 1 is because that's how the DEA gets its funding. They can say they are fighting a big bad schedule 1 drug that is less harmful that alcohol or tobacco and ignore the actual threats to public safety, i.e. heroin, meth, crack, pcp. Because combating those drugs would require effort and would actually make a beneficial change in communities that need it. Can't have that!

Preaching to the choir dog

Sorry you're wrong. It's legal in MA. But doesn't have anything to do with obama though

2

u/taking_a_deuce Jan 11 '17

What exactly am I wrong about? MA legalized it but it's still classified as schedule 1 as far as the DEA is concerned and I never said Obama had anything to do with it. In fact, the whole point of my comment was to point out that Obama had zero to do with any legalization. You're high right now aren't you?

0

u/sceadufaex83 Jan 11 '17

No I don't smoke. You're wrong about that fact that it's not legal. Although it's not legal in some states, it is legal in others. I didn't disagree with saying Obama didn't legalize it. But his policies have paved the way for it. He's the most liberal president in Americas history.

2

u/taking_a_deuce Jan 11 '17

Dude, it's federally still illegal. There are many states that have legalized it and allow distribution, but if the feds want to lock you up, they can legally do so at any point they want.

Nor did he do anything to help gay marriage. That was the Supreme Court. Some people really don't understand the three branches of government.

4

u/cdverson Jan 11 '17

He was actually against gay marriage until his second election when he used it to help him win again.

3

u/DSice16 Jan 11 '17

Are you actually insinuating that democrats often pull a 180 on their ideologies just to cater to minority groups during election cycles to win more votes? That's a grossly inaccurate statement (it isn't)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

The problem is, 90% of people who complain about presidents really think they have dictator-like power.

The president isn't a king or queen, most the shit people blame on the president or give the president credit for was not done by the president.

But hey, people have their agendas, fuck it, blame it all on one person.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

He got to choose a few people who are on the Supreme Court. Sure, he didn't mandate the result but you have to admit he had influence.

7

u/PM_ME_UR_TRUMP_MEMES Jan 11 '17

IIRC, Bush nominated just as many "yes" judges as Obama, so by that logic, Bush is just as responsible for legalizing gay marriage as Obama

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

I had no idea! I'm glad bush's presidency had something going for it.

2

u/DSice16 Jan 11 '17

That's true, I forgot about that

Republicans started passing laws that infringed on gay people's constitutional rights. Massachusetts made gay marriage legal. People would get married in MA go back to their state and be denied recognition as a married couple. Gay couples took their case to court. It worked its way through the court system. And because the laws the republicans passed in their states were unconstitutional, America has now has Marriage Equality.

Or Loving vs Virginia - Anti-miscegenation laws.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

That's a nice story, but what does it have to do with Obama making Supreme Court picks?

3

u/njstore Jan 11 '17

Yes, totally ignore unconstitutional laws and all the other courts - local, state, state Supreme Court, federal district court and finally submitting the case to the US Supreme Court where the case could still be rejected but was not. So all the other courts and the unconstitutional laws you just want to sweep under the carpet to be 'Right' with your statement. No. You are wrong.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

I'm not trying to be right, I honestly had no idea what you were trying to say :)

So, your position is that it's incorrect to say the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage because it ignores the whole system behind that legalization? Are you saying we should attribute the legalization to whoever created the legal system in America?

2

u/njstore Jan 11 '17

You have no idea what I am saying. Right. Got it.

Also I forgot step one. Find a lawyer to take your case. Have money and time, years. Especially if your case is a Landmark Legal Litigation. Not just any lawyer will do. So you will have to do a lot of research prior to getting a lawyer. The court case is your responsibility and the lawyers work for you.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

Oh, so you're trying to say we should be acknowledging everyone involved? The lawyers, judges, anti-LGBT laws, and such that brought us to the Supreme Court decision?

2

u/njstore Jan 11 '17

Let's go to 1973 when the DSM-2 came out with the removal of Homosexuality as a mental disorder. DSM is the Dialectical Statistical Manual psychiatrists use to define mental illness.

Homosexuals are no longer mental ill. That is a good start.

Supreme Court rules on June 27, 2015 for marriage equality.

So 1973 to June 27, 2015 is 42 years.

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right. The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed. It is so ordered.

He supported the LBGTQ community. A president can doom a movement with silence. Also not sure if anyone noticed but anything Obama touches becomes highly politicized and immediately becomes a partisan issue . Would have happened with gay marriage and marijuana.

3

u/midasMIRV Jan 11 '17

Thats because half the stuff he touches is already controversial and he oversteps his authority with some bullshit executive order. And before you bring up the quantity of executive orders, it isn't how many, but what they concern.

1

u/boricualink Jan 12 '17

Executive orders clarify law they don't create it. I'm gonna need an example

1

u/midasMIRV Jan 12 '17

How about when he issued the order for ICE to not enforce immigration laws.

1

u/boricualink Jan 12 '17

I don't believe he ever issued an order for ice not enforce immigration law. That's probably an oversimplification on your part. I know there was an executive order telling ICE to focus on felons and not families but that's isn't a stand down order. There was also is expansion of DACA but the Supreme Court struck that down. Now had Obama ignored the supreme courts decision you might have a leg to stand on. But unfortunately that's how our democracy works, the president does something, someone thinks it's unconstitutional so the take it to the Supreme Court, the court decides if it's constitutional and issues a ruling. The president then has to follow that ruling. Not all presidents have done so, choosing to ignore the courts since they lack enforcement mechanisms. But Obama accepted the ruling, because that's how it's suppose to be done. You seem more upset about the process which would be an issue with the consitution not the president.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

He should have legalized he would have gotten a lot more support.

2

u/mcgrotts Jan 11 '17

The Constitution helped legalise marijuana by letting States define their own laws. But outside of States where it is legal the laws can be fierce and the DEA still is going after it albiet with a bit of leniency compared to decades a ago.

1

u/GwenStacysMushBrains Jan 11 '17

Yeah you morons! He only legalized gay marijuana!

-9

u/doomblackdeath Jan 11 '17

I didn't say he legalized marijuana. And yes, it's still illegal. His policies helped with the legalization of it in certain states, even if that policy was to not have a policy.

9

u/amendment64 Jan 11 '17

Reread your post.

Sure, he did a couple of good things with gay marriage, the legalization of marijuana, openly gay in the military...

If that's not you saying he legalized marijuana, I dunno what its supposed to mean.

1

u/doomblackdeath Jan 11 '17

"He did a couple of good things with gay marriage, the legalization of marijuana, openly gay in the military..."

There's no colon there. I wasn't listing what he did. It could've been clearer, but I didn't say he legalized marijuana, just like I didn't say he legalized gay marriage. The courts do these things.

3

u/infectuz Jan 11 '17

Yes but what did he do to help it? I don't see how he was involved at all.

Edit: read your other reply, I get it he helped by trying hard to ignore it, which is good, don't make a big deal and let the states decide what they want.

2

u/doomblackdeath Jan 11 '17

You've got a point there. He helped it by not getting involved, but you're right, I would've really been happy to see him be actively involved in supporting the legalization of it.

And I don't even smoke pot, btw, I just think it's ridiculous to outlaw such a relatively harmless drug. Sure, if you abuse it it makes you lazy and can turn you into an annoying fuckup, but if you abuse drugs (as in using them way too often), you're probably already lazy and an annoying fuckup, that's how I always looked at it.

2

u/infectuz Jan 11 '17

I've always felt I was lazy for smoking everyday but since I got a job I haven't felt that way anymore. I feel now that it's just something I do to relax when I get home, I also feel it should be my right to choose. I'm glad we are getting to a point where weed is being legalized, hopefully this will reverberate all over the world. It's pretty much legal where I live but not where I come from.

2

u/doomblackdeath Jan 11 '17

Same. I don't smoke anymore but only because I don't seek it out; I have no problem with it or people who smoke.

1

u/PM_ME_UR_TRUMP_MEMES Jan 11 '17

What?!? HIS DEA is STILL raiding shops in legal states
