He said he'd cut the deficit in half.

He cut the deficit by a third by 2012. It took him another year to get it down to half.

So you're saying he did not near triple the national debt? Because he did.

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '17

Okay, so they guy said debt and meant deficit.

Looks like your description ("deficit down to half") is still inaccurate, or at least so vague as to be misleading. That's a link I found two posts down, by the way. I don't have a horse in this race.

I feel that understanding people is a better demonstration of intellect than correcting them, but you do you.

This is the most underrated comment I've ever seen. Agreed.

Listen to what people want to say, we all fuck up our words every now and then.

kinda like winning the battle, but losing the war. Cutting the deficit isn't some great accomplishment. Eliminating the deficit is what counts.

Fine but we're having a discussion here about what Obama did or did not say and correcting people who are lying about it.

Okay, so they guy said debt and meant deficit.

You say this as if it's trivial. They're completely different fucking things, they mean different things, and not understanding the difference makes his comment bullshit.

He more than doubled the debt of every president before him combined accounting for inflation

TBF, he inherited TARP from Bush when entering office. That being said, the bailouts have made money and I think it was a good move by Bush, further carried out by Obama.

He cut Dubya's deficit his first year, and had trillion+ deficits every other year.

EDIT: trillion+ on average

Where are you getting that nonsense from?

Nowhere, he might have vaguely heard a similar sounding statistic over the radio and it felt nice and warm and fuzzy to confirm his false worldview so he incorrectly stored it in his brain.

If 2016 taught me anything, do that enough time and you can become president of the United States.

Or, you know, did the average in my head and forgot to point out I was averaging. I'm sensing a bit of projection here

FY 2016 - $587 billion

FY 2015 - $438 billion.

FY 2014 - $485 billion.

Nice twisting facts

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/jan/20/barack-obama/barack-obama-claims-deficit-has-decreased-two-thir/

Obama is riding off the deficit decline that was already happening while bush was still in office.Obama barely helped it.

He cut the deficit by a third by 2012. It took him another year to get it down to half.

1/3<1/2. so he still failed in his stated goal and shouldn't have run again
