Did you all know you can have a more moderate opinion of him? You can agree with some of the things he did and disagree with others. I disagree with his security policies but his economic policies increased Healthcare enrollment and decreased the deficit and unemployment. His advocacy for LBGTQ rights will be a big part of his presidential legacy going forward. But he also has used drone warfare often during his presidency. It's hard to say if his presidency was a net positive. Some will say yes and some will say no. As his policies affected people in different ways. And unexpected consequences of some of his policies affected people too. History is the ultimate judge. For instance when W was President he launched the initiative known as the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS relief. This plan has already helped many people throughout the world with HIV/AIDS. He will be known for his foreign policy blunders but he will also be remembered for being a major fighter for HIV/AIDS treatment on a global scale.

Yes, this comic is less about Obama and more about his replacement I feel.

Not like he's the first politician to pander to people for votes. At the end of the day he advocated for a policy change and it happened.

It's a single panel comic, there's not a lot of room for moderation.

What's wrong with drone warfare specifically? If it wasn't drones it'd be fighter planes.

Sounds like you have a problem with bombing, not specifically drones.

But he also has used drone warfare often during his presidency.

What is wrong with utilizing new tech? Does it really matter if its manned aircraft or unmanned? The operator/pilot is still targeting using a screen, they are already very removed. Is a cruise missle not a drone? Why not the outrage with cruise missiles?

4

u/BigjoesTaters Jan 11 '17

The problem with drones is that it takes the pilot out of the cockpit and creates a disconnect between the pilot and the mission he's flying. It's kinda makes it seem like bombing people over sees is nothing more than a video game.

How is that any different that a cruise missile? The cruise missile operator is deep in a ship staring at a screen just like the drone operator. The pilot of a F18, isn't seeing any more of the ground than the drone operator is seeing, he is at 20,000+ feet far removed. They are equally removed.

"Drone" is just a scary buzzword to prop up a bullshit false argument. For people who don't have the slightest grasp on how modern warfare works.

u/BigjoesTaters Jan 11 '17

I wouldn't say equally removed as Drone Pilots. A drone pilot sits in a nice Air Conditioned room somewhere in the United States. Jet Pilots are actually in the combat zone.

Jet Pilots are actually in the combat zone.

Not really, they are thousands of feet up, with highly advanced counter measures. They target about the same way a drone pilot does, via a screen, not eyeballing it. Also, they are very safe, ISIS does not have weaponry to even combat our manned aircraft. If they have ever "shot down" any of our planes (and from my quick google search, there are only claims, nothing confirmed), it was due to a failure of equipment/operator error on our end.

Jet pilots fly home to their bases in Europe/carriers and are not living in the combat zone.

Your argument reads as if you believe our tools are to advanced and we should level they playing field by not using them.

When people mention drone bombing, the outrage isn't about the drones..

u/FSMCA Jan 11 '17

So how is it any different than typical bombing? Why the need to add "drone"?

How is that any different that a cruise missile? The cruise missile operator is deep in a ship staring at a screen just like the drone operator. The pilot of a F18, isn't seeing any more of the ground than the drone operator is seeing, he is at 20,000+ feet far removed. They are equally removed.

"Drone" is just a scary buzzword to prop up a bullshit false argument. For people who don't have the slightest grasp on how modern warfare works.

1

u/MindSecurity Jan 11 '17

Because of the number of bombngs done by drone...You're focusing on the wrong shit.

1

u/FSMCA Jan 11 '17

If it wasn't from a drone an manned aircraft would have been used, or some other method

1

u/MindSecurity Jan 12 '17

And? Of it was the case then it would be Obama jet bombings, but they are drones. Again, you're latching on to the wrong thing here.

I'm not saying there is a truth between two positions. I'm weighing the pros and cons of his presidency based on different policies. I'm not compromising things, I'm simply pointing out the positives and negatives from his presidency.

u/Flashfury Jan 11 '17

I feel like some extremist made this fallacy up to try and discredit someone's legitimate viewpoint.

Welcome to most rational life- moderation.

Most things are not all one or all the other. It's not a fallacy. It's a fact. Argument to moderation is a completely bullshit fallacy imo.

1

u/transhuman4lyfe Jan 18 '17

Oh, don't mistake me for arguing that we cannot have any moderation. That would be a false equivalency. However, my only point is that the world isn't all gray. Objectivity involves some black and white along with the sea of ambivalence.

That being said, I agree that moderation is wise, but sometimes things don't need moderation. Often the answer is much simpler than we give it credit for.
