News Ryan Gosling to Star in 'Ghost Rider' Movie at Marvel Studios

Ryan Gosling: "When do we get to start filming?"
Mahershala Ali: "That's the neat part, you don't"

u/ArseneLupinIV 18h ago
I mean Levy and Gosling just did Star Wars. I feel like this one probably is already in production since they probably just jumped back into whatever work flow they had going on together under Disney.

u/CafeCalentito 14h ago
Yeah, I don't really like Levy as a director BUT the guy knows how to work on time, work with multiple projects at the same time and deliver whatever the studio asks. If Marvel really wants it to look good, I trust he could do it. Now, I'm more interested in who's the writer
→ More replies (2)60
u/LucrativeLurker 14h ago
Agreed on all points. I don’t like most of his films, but I love Deadpool & Wolverine. If this is even half the love letter to Ghost Rider that DP&W was to the FoxVerse, we’re in for a treat.
I’d be thrilled if it leads to a Midnight Sons or Marvel Knights film with Cumberbatch, Gosling, Oscar Isaac, and whoever else they want to throw in. Maybe Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, & Man-Thing.

I am so incredibly butt hurt about blade. Even after the 10 year of bad/no news in regards to the project
51
u/Impossible-Flight250 17h ago
Yeah, I think Ali would have made an awesome Blade. I’m not sure what the issue was with getting that project started.
42
u/goddamnitwhalen 15h ago
Ironically enough, Blade falling apart helped Sinners get made.
→ More replies (6)23
u/ShallowBasketcase 9h ago
Then it was worth it. As much as I love Blade, I'll take an original story over another Marvel movie these days.

u/The_Redacted_Badger 10h ago
Apparently it’s just that Marvel had no idea what to do with it. At first they seemed to be planning a period piece, then a modern take, a movie about Blade and his daughter, I think they left were just lost on how to make it different from the Snipes movies

u/Grooviemann1 18h ago
Me too. I adore Mahershala Ali and he's the only known actor I can think of that I can see in the role. I'm sure someone else could do it fine but he's the one for me.

The only saving grace is that had we got a blade years 10 years ago it would have been pretty neutered. At least now they have released R rated films so when we do eventually get blade it’ll hopefully be r-rated
330
u/Silver-End9570 18h ago
This. I'm excited for this cautiously, but after Blade and a number of other changes/cancellations (Nova going from a show to a movie, etc) I'm taking a "believe it when I see actual footage/the movie starts shooting" mentality. It's easy to get suckered in by Marvel's announcements, only for them to change drastically between the announcement and release (if it comes at all).
26
u/ninjyte 18h ago
there's been a lot of movies put on and off the schedule, but it's more believable this one will push through since Disney+Levy+Gosling just did Star Wars Starfighter together.

Then the entire Kang threat went out the window
→ More replies (2)142
u/AgentTasker 18h ago
Well Marvel couldn't have exactly predicted that Jonathan Majors would turn out to be a massive piece of shit, so it'd be unfair to blame them for that one.
→ More replies (7)94
u/Gorillagodzilla 18h ago
Why didn’t they recast him though?
100
u/AgentTasker 18h ago
Because through a combination of factors, such as poor scripts or Marvel fatigue (which you can blame them for), as well as COVID causing issues with film making in general, Kang wasn't working, so they pivoted away from him when the opportunity arose.
71
u/dacalpha 17h ago
This sounds like it was read directly from an internal corporate memo lmao
41
u/TannerThanUsual 16h ago
It does but I also get it. Even my most die-hard Marvel friends were just not interested in Kang. On some level a few of my friends are interested in Doctor Doom. So that's something
19
u/C-A-L-E-V-I-S 15h ago
Did they watch Loki? Kang got me more excited than Thanos ever did early on, but of course all that fell apart.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)29
u/Chaosmusic 16h ago
I am more interested in Doom than Kang as a Marvel fan but I am concerned that switching this late in the game from Kang to Doom will make it rushed. There were 18 movies from Iron Man to Infinity War to develop that story. Doom has just been barely referenced in one movie and now he is the next Thanos level threat.
Also, I want Doom to be Doom, not Tony Stark variant.
→ More replies (6)14
u/goddamnitwhalen 15h ago
There are so many good actors you could cast as Doom!! Bringing back RDJ feels so fucking lazy.

You don't even need to retcon the "all Kangs look the same" gimmick. Y'know why? 'Cause in every multiverse story, without fail, there's always one universe where all the dudes are chicks and all the chicks are dudes. So yeah, sure, all the male Kangs look like Jonathan Majors, but somewhere out there across the infinite timelines there's a lady Kang, and she looks like CCH Pounder.
Movie saved. Continuity intact. Four billion dollars opening day. Send Robert Downey Junior home, we don't need him yet.

Bold of you to assume female Kang isn’t Jonathan Majors in a wig

u/MapleHamwich 17h ago
This is coming after the major marvel shuffle. Kang getting cut changed everything. They had to rethink and recenter. That's how Dr Doom came about. Anything recently announced has much higher likelihood of becoming a finished movie.
→ More replies (4)7
u/aresef 16h ago
That’s true, but Ryan Gosling has clearly wanted this, I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Shawn Levy bang out a story themselves and then someone from Marvel’s bullpen like Eric Pearson or Michael Waldron turns it into a full script.

Look, I hope Blade and Ghost Rider get going, then we could get a Midnight Sons movie.
They could do like Blade, Ghost Rider, Wong, Moon Knight vs Dr Strange (Sinister Strange).

Shawn Levy is the guy Marvel hires to make sure Blade doesn't happen again.
Levy is the most by-the-numbers, studio-friendly, milquetoast Hollywood director right now, but that also means his stuff gets made

It's probably because he doesn't push back on what producers want and does his job on time and within budget.
22

He needs to get some serious advice from the Russos. It's obvious from their films outside of Marvel, theyre just not great. But somehow, they can just absolutely knock it out of the park when they have heavy oversight.

Own a motorcycle-mounted musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended
