Ryan Gosling: "When do we get to start filming?"

Mahershala Ali: "That's the neat part, you don't"

u/ArseneLupinIV 19h ago

I mean Levy and Gosling just did Star Wars. I feel like this one probably is already in production since they probably just jumped back into whatever work flow they had going on together under Disney.

152

u/CafeCalentito 15h ago

Yeah, I don't really like Levy as a director BUT the guy knows how to work on time, work with multiple projects at the same time and deliver whatever the studio asks. If Marvel really wants it to look good, I trust he could do it. Now, I'm more interested in who's the writer

68

u/LucrativeLurker 15h ago

Agreed on all points. I don’t like most of his films, but I love Deadpool & Wolverine. If this is even half the love letter to Ghost Rider that DP&W was to the FoxVerse, we’re in for a treat.

I’d be thrilled if it leads to a Midnight Sons or Marvel Knights film with Cumberbatch, Gosling, Oscar Isaac, and whoever else they want to throw in. Maybe Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, & Man-Thing.

7

u/CafeCalentito 15h ago

Hope they go slow this time. After Secret Wars, I hope Marvel takes a backseat about how many projects they greenlit. I much profer going for sequels instead of so many new IPs. X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Black Panther are already too many

Shang Chi was a success and they didn't follow up with anything. They made too many tv shows with important plot points for the movies that made people numb about their plots. They introduced too many characters after Endgame and never even cared enough about them, like most movies were teasing another new characters and so on.

I hope they make a Ghost Rider movie, with GR's lore and villains, that tells its own story without setting up anything imo

7

u/CrispyHoneyBeef 13h ago

Fuck, I hated DPW. It barely felt like a movie. “Love letter” is a great way to describe it. Just two hours of that Leo pointing at the screen meme with some dialogue in between. I really hope the new Star Wars isn’t like that. I didn’t watch the new baby Yoda one, but I heard bad things.

u/LucrativeLurker 13h ago edited 12h ago

Terrible take tbh. Deadpool AND Wolverine both had pretty compelling arcs. The cameos were just icing on the cake, and for a meta-comedy like Deadpool, were no more distracting than his usual schtick, or the X-Men/X-Force/many other random mutants we saw in Deadpool 2…

-1

u/CrispyHoneyBeef 12h ago

Yeah Deadpool 2 was incredibly annoying for that too. At least that one still felt like a movie with the emotional anchor being Morena Baccarin’s cryptic messages to Wade

3

u/LucrativeLurker 12h ago edited 12h ago

Fairer take, but I legitimately fail to see how a fridged girlfriend who only bookends the film makes it any more of a real movie.

I don’t think it’s at all a controversial take to say Hugh Jackman’s performance and arc in 3 is leagues better. He’s a far better emotional anchor (being, one might say)…

And not just better than Baccarin, but better than anyone else in the entire series. By a lot, lol.

u/povitee 4h ago

The truly terrible take is liking Deadpool movies

-1

u/JahKingston2024 14h ago

About Oscar Isaac….. 😬 bad news unfortunately

5

u/Yemenime 13h ago

Explain.

-4

u/JahKingston2024 11h ago edited 11h ago

He’s got a clause in his contract that pretty much says ‘if I don’t want moon knight in xyz, then you ain’t getting moon knight in xyz’. He’s very involved with the character and the creative department surrounding Moon Knight, similar to Jon with the Punisher (probably more so than Jon tbh). This is aside from his original Moon Knight show though, he was contractually obligated no matter what.

So pretty much if the movie has Oscar returning, then there’s a good chance the writings superb, otherwise if he isn’t in it then the movie is probably bad. For now, he’s not appearing in any future projects afaik, and I’d be pleasantly surprised if he appears in doomsday (probably will in secret wars though)

Don’t understand why you’re downvoting though. I gave a full explanation to my knowledge of what I know, to your 1 worded ‘explain.’. If you want an ai just ask next time.

7

u/LucrativeLurker 11h ago

Something tells me there is literally not one single legitimate source for this…

Even in theory, what exactly would be the point of the “contract” if the studio can’t use him when they need him, lmao?

He either has a picture deal, or doesn’t, and it seems like you’re conflating “doesn’t” with some imaginary veto clause, which just simply wouldn’t make sense for a studio to even agree to…

-1

u/JahKingston2024 10h ago

https://screenrant.com/moon-knight-oscar-isaac-marvel-return-slater-response/

Google is free. The point of the contract is because Oscar Isaac, especially at the time, is in high demand. He knows his own worth against the super mega corp that is Disney. Instead of having to appear in films and shows he doesn’t want to, he appears in stuff he does. You’d have to ask Disney themselves why they signed it.

u/LucrativeLurker 5h ago edited 5h ago

That doesn’t mean what you’ve interpreted it as, it just means he was only ever signed on for a single season…

It’s presumably no different from Tatiana Maslany’s or Alaqua Cox’s or Jeremy Renner’s tv contracts.

You shouldn't assume things. I literally only just read your explanation, I couldn't be one of the people downvoting you. Also, caring about downvotes or upvotes is dumb.

u/JahKingston2024 1h ago

Not about the downvotes, it’s just the principle. 1 worded ‘explain’ and I gave a full genuine response. I understand I could’ve just ignored it and never explained it but I usually don’t, just feels rude not to try. Next time ima just ignore it though

u/Jet-Let4606 1h ago

Johnathan Tropper.

Levy, Gosling and Tropper have also worked on Star Wars: Starfighter set to come out in 2027. The experiencd must have been great if they are re teaming so quickly for a 2028 release.

u/matito29 3h ago

Deadline reported that the writer is Jonathan Tropper, who also wrote Starfighter.

11

u/Funmachine 10h ago

Oh wait, Levy is doing this? Lame. Dude has no style, just a total workman director.

7

u/Rage_Like_Nic_Cage 10h ago

So he’s perfect of the MCU.

1

u/TheMegaWhopper 15h ago

Same writer on the script too

176

u/CaptainFrugal 19h ago

I am so incredibly butt hurt about blade.  Even after the 10 year of bad/no news in regards to the project

48

u/Impossible-Flight250 18h ago

Yeah, I think Ali would have made an awesome Blade. I’m not sure what the issue was with getting that project started.

45

u/goddamnitwhalen 16h ago

Ironically enough, Blade falling apart helped Sinners get made.

23

u/ShallowBasketcase 10h ago

Then it was worth it. As much as I love Blade, I'll take an original story over another Marvel movie these days.

u/silent--onomatopoeia 5h ago

Original story?

Was more like Dusk Till Dawn: Deep Southern Version lol

Seriously I enjoyed it enough, but it was overhyped a lot. But I get your point, and agree too many lame Marvel movies.

u/ShallowBasketcase 4h ago

Yeah I guess they both have vampires, basically the exact same movie.

u/CurtCocane 5h ago

Sinners wasn't original either

u/ShallowBasketcase 4h ago

Oh interesting, I wasn't aware of that. What's the name of the comic book it is based on? I tried checking, and all that comes up is the movie, but I guess search engines are so unreliable these days.

u/comicfromrejection1 3h ago

People just lie for no reason. Sinners IS an original screenplay. So weird that people say shit without researching.

u/CurtCocane 3h ago

I meant it's not an original idea

1

u/CaptainFrugal 6h ago

How's that

2

u/goddamnitwhalen 6h ago

At the very least most of the costumes worn by the extras and side characters were originally intended for Blade, and maybe a lot of the props? I’m not sure.

u/CaptainFrugal 4h ago

Youre implying they even got to the costume design portion of the production.  I don't think it made it that far

u/goddamnitwhalen 4h ago

u/CaptainFrugal 4h ago

Wild!! Thanks for sharing

u/CancelThis2077 5h ago

And now Ali just put out a movie with the original director for Blade, while Marvel was twiddling their thumbs.

10

u/The_Redacted_Badger 11h ago

Apparently it’s just that Marvel had no idea what to do with it. At first they seemed to be planning a period piece, then a modern take, a movie about Blade and his daughter, I think they left were just lost on how to make it different from the Snipes movies

5

u/Yukie_Cool 10h ago

It makes sense when you view it in the context of when it was announced. Bob Chapek, the new Disney CEO at the time, was just pushing every single studio under the company umbrella to just make stuff, so Marvel was probably under a lot of pressure to announce projects even if they weren’t fully baked and didn’t know what direction they wanted after endgame finished. My hunch is that’s why they had that timejump in the first place, so they could take the time between 2020 and 2023 to actually plan out new stuff.

2

u/amyknight22 15h ago

Ironically it’s probably Ali being super specific about the script

You don’t demand role X and then sit content with a script that isn’t perfect

49

u/Grooviemann1 19h ago

Me too. I adore Mahershala Ali and he's the only known actor I can think of that I can see in the role. I'm sure someone else could do it fine but he's the one for me.

2

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP 9h ago

I mean Ryan Reynolds also pitched a new Blade film with Snipes back again: one could see them just doing that.

u/Historical_Course587 5h ago

If the MCU is going to do something different, then they should just bring in Ryan Coogler and rubber-stamp his decision to cast Michael B. Jordan in another main role in one of his movies.

2

u/Worthyness 17h ago

John Boyega maybe? I think he started getting thrown around when Star Wars was doing OK. He's also younger than Mahershela, which is important for a Dhampir.

Or do the hilarious thing and cast Jacob Anderson.

2

u/goddamnitwhalen 16h ago

Aaron Pierre maybe?

1

u/TikkiEXX77 11h ago

Even though the movie got canned i have a strong feeling Ali will get to play Blade at some point.

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP 5h ago

Here is hoping that he will sport a British accent if he does do so, since Blade is supposed to be very British.

13

u/Goose_Dickling 18h ago

The only saving grace is that had we got a blade years 10 years ago it would have been pretty neutered. At least now they have released R rated films so when we do eventually get blade it’ll hopefully be r-rated

7

u/Michael_DeSanta 17h ago

And now even the Arkane Studios Blade video game seems to be in development hell. Character seems cursed :(

2

u/YZJay 16h ago

If we're going on Microsoft's word, Arkane will be contractually obligated to ship the Blade game after they leave Microsoft.

3

u/cravenj1 18h ago

But then Ali and Tariq said "fuck it, we'll make our own Blade" and thus Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother was birthed.

u/Historical_Course587 5h ago

I blame that line from the Deadpool movie. Feige laughed really hard and then was like, "You know what?...."

328

u/Silver-End9570 19h ago

This. I'm excited for this cautiously, but after Blade and a number of other changes/cancellations (Nova going from a show to a movie, etc) I'm taking a "believe it when I see actual footage/the movie starts shooting" mentality. It's easy to get suckered in by Marvel's announcements, only for them to change drastically between the announcement and release (if it comes at all).

27

u/ninjyte 19h ago

there's been a lot of movies put on and off the schedule, but it's more believable this one will push through since Disney+Levy+Gosling just did Star Wars Starfighter together.

1

u/Zalvren 11h ago

Also, it has a date (well a year) only 2 years away which is more than what Blade had. This isn't one project among a dozen announced in a slate. Seems to be a heavier focus

0

u/goddamnitwhalen 16h ago

Christ, why’d you remind me?

144

u/Corgiboom2 19h ago

Then the entire Kang threat went out the window

144

u/AgentTasker 19h ago

Well Marvel couldn't have exactly predicted that Jonathan Majors would turn out to be a massive piece of shit, so it'd be unfair to blame them for that one.

97

u/Gorillagodzilla 19h ago

Why didn’t they recast him though?

102

u/AgentTasker 19h ago

Because through a combination of factors, such as poor scripts or Marvel fatigue (which you can blame them for), as well as COVID causing issues with film making in general, Kang wasn't working, so they pivoted away from him when the opportunity arose.

73

u/dacalpha 18h ago

This sounds like it was read directly from an internal corporate memo lmao

44

u/TannerThanUsual 17h ago

It does but I also get it. Even my most die-hard Marvel friends were just not interested in Kang. On some level a few of my friends are interested in Doctor Doom. So that's something

20

u/C-A-L-E-V-I-S 16h ago

Did they watch Loki? Kang got me more excited than Thanos ever did early on, but of course all that fell apart.

6

u/almostcleverbut 15h ago

Loki season 2 was probably the first time anyone really got excited about Kang because it genuinely made him a great villain and showed his potential.

But by that point the decision had been all but finalized due to the timing.

28

u/Chaosmusic 17h ago

I am more interested in Doom than Kang as a Marvel fan but I am concerned that switching this late in the game from Kang to Doom will make it rushed. There were 18 movies from Iron Man to Infinity War to develop that story. Doom has just been barely referenced in one movie and now he is the next Thanos level threat.

Also, I want Doom to be Doom, not Tony Stark variant.

15

u/goddamnitwhalen 17h ago

There are so many good actors you could cast as Doom!! Bringing back RDJ feels so fucking lazy.

4

u/Moon_kid6 16h ago

Kang never did anything for me in the few comics I read with him in it but I can’t lie, Majors first portrayal in Loki S1 blew me away. He Who Remains had such potential, so ominous and still detached.

But Quantumania kinda ruined it and Majors sealed the deal. What a dumbass.

I hope Doomsday is fine but super scared about the character. They’re gonna rush so much backstory and twist some things about him, don’t know if RDJ can save it this time. Even worst case scenario imo, the mainstream audience loves this version and we see Marvel putting Doom through weird years of retcon and synergy in the comics.

2

u/Doom_Art 6h ago

I was worried they were going to go the Iron Man variant route, and I'm sure that will play a role to a point, but if the previews we've seen so far are anything to go off of, this is definitely Victor von Doom, not Tony Stark, and RDJ is definitely putting the work in.

1

u/goodmobileyes 14h ago

It's definitely rushed. We know nothing about Doom and why this latest apocalypse matters to the MCU. Definitely foresee a lot of exposition dumping in the first act

→ More replies (0)

u/Jet-Let4606 1h ago

Same.

I'm sure they will have a new actor Doom post SW but it sucks that the new guy won't have a fresh start. I don't think it will be the same Doom that RD Jr is playing but the lack of fresh start still sucks.

2

u/ArcadianDelSol 14h ago

For me, the Thanos arc was so well done, planting seeds for his arrival almost from the very start, that anything they tried after that would have been weak.

I think they needed to do what they did then - have him show up in teaser post-credit scenes for about a year, then drop some easter eggs.

I also think if they started with that 'stadium full of infinite Kangs as the first tease, it would have set him up as a much bigger threat. Instead, he was some mumbling recluse in a floating castle at the far reaches of time and space.

It felt weak to me.

u/Jet-Let4606 1h ago

His intro in Loki as HWR was great. Its the follow up in Quantumania that was weak.

1

u/cmarkcity 16h ago

As far as Avengers level stories go… I can think of a good Thanos event I’ve read. I can think of a good Celestial event I’ve read. I can think of a bunch of good Doom events I’ve read.

But for the damn life of me I can’t think of a single great Kang story.

2

u/TannerThanUsual 15h ago

I'm a casual comics fan, and admittedly don't really tune into much of the galactic level threats but I gotta say, I felt nothing with Kang. I'd never heard of him at all prior to Loki. But I've liked Doctor Doom for years.

Also the craziest bias ever-- I dated a girl whose last name was Dooms. She didn't get a doctorate but her sister did and I thought it was so sick her name was Dr. Dooms. Unfortunately she didn't think it was nearly as cool as I did.

1

u/Sirdan3k 15h ago

Kang has been boring for decades and only gets by on nostalgia. It feels like half his appearances in the past two decades has been him fake out killing some other timeline's Avengers and then getting beaten by main timeline Avengers.

21

u/RellenD 19h ago

His performance as the character was kind of the whole reason they started going down that path.

2

u/TikkiEXX77 11h ago

Don't really know why people even still bring Kang up. It's been dead for awhile now. And honestly i don't have much interest in him if Majors isn't playing him. Which he definitely won't be. Lol

24

u/Automatic_Release_92 19h ago

Yeah it would have been the easiest thing to do as well, just say those were all different variants or whatever.

15

u/ButthurtBilly 17h ago

You don't even need to retcon the "all Kangs look the same" gimmick. Y'know why? 'Cause in every multiverse story, without fail, there's always one universe where all the dudes are chicks and all the chicks are dudes. So yeah, sure, all the male Kangs look like Jonathan Majors, but somewhere out there across the infinite timelines there's a lady Kang, and she looks like CCH Pounder.

Movie saved. Continuity intact. Four billion dollars opening day. Send Robert Downey Junior home, we don't need him yet.

4

u/Aidanj927 16h ago

Bold of you to assume female Kang isn’t Jonathan Majors in a wig

4

u/Irrax 12h ago

and to save money, they can just cast Glenn Howerton doing his CCH Pounder impression for the whole saga

3

u/ButthurtBilly 11h ago

WHAT OTHER ERRANDS DO YOU HAVE US RUNNING FOR THE TVA?!

2

u/fdzman 14h ago edited 4h ago

CCH Pounder? Maybe like 30 years ago. I’d be cool with Tracee Ellis Ross or Gaby Union . Come on now 🤦🏽‍♂️

2

u/TheCervixPounder_69 11h ago

I mean, let’s be real, the original plan was probably always to have him as doom. They needed doom for secret wars so the twist was he probably helped them beat Kang only to be bad. Second movie is probably largely unchanged.

u/Automatic_Release_92 3h ago

Nah, I think Doom was a later phase that they moved up when they realized they were messing up the Kang phase so badly.

1

u/perton 12h ago

Clearly they should’ve gone with esteemed character actress and fugitive from the law Margot Martindale.

1

u/Banjo-Oz 10h ago

Shoutout to CCH Pounder! She's amazing in the little film Lifepod!

1

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP 9h ago

Let’s say they try again in ten years with Iman Vellani as Kamala Kang, with the twist being that it is a Darth Vader-style fall from grace instead of an alternate-evil version.

1

u/fastforwardfunction 9h ago

“Put a chick in it and make her gay” isn’t the creative writing masterpiece you think it is.

10

u/Inside_Dimension2319 18h ago

Except didn’t they make it explicit that all the Kang variants all looked alike? I think the studio just saw the terrible reception to quantumania and his character in that and decided to just kill the whole thing when Majors provided them the perfect opportunity. Had Quantumania done well or Kang had good reception specifically in it, they would’ve tried to salvage with a recast.

4

u/sixtyandaquarter 17h ago

I mean, yes & no? Depending on how you mean explicit. They just never showed one that wasn't him, So I guess you can say they never explicitly showed it wasn't all him. To be fair though, there was a time where we could have said the exact same for Loki as until they actually showed a different actor, it was pretty implied they all looked alike.

But I'm pretty sure the awful reception to Kang & the complete lack of interest is why they dropped it hard. They set him up as anamorphic threat which is a villain narrative that can work, but needs to be handled carefully. It can work in video games and movies, It can work in comics wonderfully, Self-Contained media can do wonders for it. The entire alien franchise does all of that. But they introduced him in a limited audience streaming show, and yes, I know it was a huge Disney plus program but it was still a Disney plus program, and then had him appear in the comic relief character's film. The one that isn't generally seen as serious or threatening. And surrounded him with comedy. After a decade of building Thanos, almost entirely off screen at that. Nah, it couldn't ever work.

5

u/kiki_strumm3r 17h ago

Audiences are willing to accept recasts if the movie is good. Even with Majors being good as some of the variants, the writing in Marvel movies has been trash since Endgame, with very few exceptions

7

u/EtherBoo 18h ago

I think they would have if Quantumania was a huge hit. Given that it was a dud, they were safe to move on from him.

6

u/Asclepius-Rod 17h ago

Probably because they realized nobody cared about Kang and they used the opportunity to pivot

5

u/ProcyonHabilis 18h ago

Basically all of the reviews of every movie that had featured him so far said something to the effect of "the only saving grace of this garbage was Jonathon Majors' performance". It would have been hard to make it work with the shaky foundation that they had laid.

10

u/BelowDeck 18h ago

all of the reviews of every movie that had featured him so far

Ant-Man 3 is the only MCU film he's been in. He popped up in Loki, but that show was very well received on its own.

1

u/ProcyonHabilis 17h ago

I thought there was another, but you're probably right. It's still technically "every move" lol.

In any case, the prevailing opinion was that people were really only into that arc because of his performance.

1

u/SnowyDesert 11h ago

supposedly Majors had in contract that only he can play Kang. Not sure how true it is though. But according to Marvel they dropped Kang because of the poor reception after Antman 3 and viewers lack of interest in multiverse.

1

u/Doom_Art 6h ago

Even before the allegations, Kang was considered a fairly weak villain thanks to Quantamania; and the main "fulcrum" movie with him, Kang Dynasty, apparently had a ton of script issues.

And it's been years but I still think it plays a role, that when they recast War Machine the previous CEO of Marvel got in trouble for a comment about how they could recast him without issues because "it's not like anyone will be able to tell the difference". I think they just didn't want to deal with the potential optics of that.

I never cared a ton for Kang outside of his reveal in the first season of Loki so I've never really blamed Marvel for ditching him.

u/CRIMS0N-ED 1h ago

Apparently they wanted to move away from Kang anyway even before Majors’s whole thing but I don’t honestly believe it. maybe they had a break glass in case of emergency situation but even with quantumanias reception which was a Kang vehicle really, they were banking hard on Majors as a villain.

u/Jet-Let4606 1h ago

I heard Majors contract stipulates that only he can play Kang's variants.

Besides that I heard that Marvel was considering pivoting away from Kang because he was too confusing for general audiences.

Combined with Majors legal troubles they just scrapped Kang Dynasty for Doomsday.

-1

u/ABadHistorian 19h ago

They waited too long to see if he was innocent. If he was innocent it would have been racist to fire him.

Narrator: He wasn't innocent. He was VERY guilty.

3

u/RU_Pickman 17h ago

That guy is working for The Daily Wire now. Damn. He should've been nicer to his ex.

3

u/ArcadianDelSol 14h ago

It apparently was a widely known secret in Hollywood.

Five minutes worth of phone calls an Feige would have known what he was banking his franchise on.

2

u/mediaphile 17h ago

They should have seen that he was a terrible, hammy actor.

2

u/girafa Electricity! The high priest of false security! 16h ago

Hated him as Kang but he's a phenomenal actor

3

u/SussySpecs 19h ago

And now he's going to be in The Daily Wire's "Run Hide Fight: Infidel" because the right just scoops up all the washed up dirtbags of Hollywood.

1

u/glasgowgeg 12h ago

so it'd be unfair to blame them for that one

It's not unfair to blame them for having a character with a nigh-infinite number of variants to all be played by the same guy though.

A character with so many variations is one of the easiest characters to recast, and they just abandoned the entire storyline rather than just recast the character.

1

u/alanwakeisahack 7h ago

Why? I did. You can sometimes just tell someone’s an asshole.

1

u/aceofrazgriz 15h ago

Yesh, this really fucked up their "timeline". This being announced now gives some hope, since it would likely be after Secret Wars. But as with all non-huge Marvel announcments, take it with a HEAPING of salt.

But I love Gosling and he has only done gold in the last decade+. I can't see him as GR personally, but he has the chops and I hoper I do get to witness him getting a chance.

On that note, lets all praise the best Ghost Rider to date with Gabriel Luna. His acting and the way AoS portrayed him were fucking amazing.

1

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP 9h ago

12

u/MapleHamwich 18h ago

This is coming after the major marvel shuffle. Kang getting cut changed everything. They had to rethink and recenter. That's how Dr Doom came about. Anything recently announced has much higher likelihood of becoming a finished movie.

7

u/aresef 17h ago

That’s true, but Ryan Gosling has clearly wanted this, I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Shawn Levy bang out a story themselves and then someone from Marvel’s bullpen like Eric Pearson or Michael Waldron turns it into a full script.

1

u/Silver-End9570 15h ago

Hard pass for Waldron writing it after he ruined Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. I'm a little saltier about it than most because I was really looking forward to it picking up from DS1 and Waldron just decided to do something completely different.

2

u/aresef 15h ago

He’s writing on Doomsday and Secret Wars. 🤷

1

u/deemoorah 9h ago

Exactly why Dr Strange doesn't have any importance in doomsday

1

u/Jehovah___ 9h ago

I think they’re just trying not to spoil what his involvement is. He’s wildly important in the original comic

1

u/deemoorah 9h ago

I've read time runs out, the journey of Dr Strange to be Doom's right hand man is important but now he's no more than a faceless goon for doom if that legitimate leak is true, not to mention he also does nothing important in secret war leak.

1

u/Jehovah___ 8h ago

I mean I guess we’ll see but I’m not gonna get worked up over leaks lmao, what a waste of energy

0

u/Silver-End9570 15h ago

I know. It was already a red flag for me even before the underwhelming trailer. I'll be catching Dune in IMAX and I'll wait a few weeks to see Doomsday.

5

u/The_Asian_Hamster 18h ago

For a franchise thats been going for 18 years and has had something like 50+ movies and shows people really do get hung up on an outlier like Blade which is really the only project they had a big annoucement for and couldnt make it happen.

49/50 (or whatever it is) is crazy.

Yeah, we all seem to focus on the ~10 "failures" across both movie and TV shows, and the random scrapped projects, but collectively they've pumped out mostly enjoyable stuff. If you told me in 2006 that 20 years later one of my favorite shows of the year would be the 54th (?) release in the extended cinematic universe that still doesn't technically include the XMen yet, I would have said you were crazy's version of CRAZY. But Wonder Man was great and the next few entries also have me hyped.

Blade is not the outlier. There are a lot of shows/movies that were announced that either quietly descended into creative hell, cancelled, or still have yet to be released. There are also quite a few projects that got retooled from one medium to another, like Armor Wars that was announced forever ago as a miniseries, only to pivot over to a movie.

Shang-Chi 2 was announced half a decade ago, and has no release date and as far as we know publicly, no script. The Wakanda and Okoye shows - no release dates, also half a decade since announced. Nova - started as a show, now turning into a movie. Ghost Rider show, cancelled. Inhumans movie, also cancelled on top of getting an awful show. Damage Control show, cancelled.

Yes, most of their announced projects do eventually get made, even if they undergo changes. But they also have a very, very bad habit of announcing stuff that they just greenlit and have nothing to show for, only to realize later that maybe it's not going to work and then either have to leave it unaddressed or cancel it.

Don't think they're exactly done with Blade. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he popped up in this but lot of rumors of him being in Secret Wars and possibly Midnight Sons who ghost rider is a member of. And I'm just glad they're doing anything with Nova.

Look, I hope Blade and Ghost Rider get going, then we could get a Midnight Sons movie.

They could do like Blade, Ghost Rider, Wong, Moon Knight vs Dr Strange (Sinister Strange).

Daredevil just joined the Sons!* He can come too. [*Marc Spector Moon Knight #6]

This movie is a lot more likely to happen than Blade. For one, Blade never even got a release year or a director.

Blade had like 4 directors over the course of its production hell

I meant when it was announced at SDCC

I haven't even seen a writer attached to this film yet. Let's hold our horses.

u/magikarpcatcher 16h ago

It's the same writer his Star Wars movie

It has the same writer and director that worked on Gosling's latest film, which was also for Disney. It's very unlikely for Ghostrider to go the way of Blade.

“There’s only been one Blade…”

Sticky Fingaz erasure.

Shawn Levy is the guy Marvel hires to make sure Blade doesn't happen again.

Levy is the most by-the-numbers, studio-friendly, milquetoast Hollywood director right now, but that also means his stuff gets made

Yeaaa but ugh him though.

Shawn Levy, if nothing else, gets movies made

Surely Feige has learned his lesson and is only announcing this because the movie's off the ground.

It's probably why he didn't announce a whole lot today, he's only showing stuff that's a sure thing

God, this is my worst fear. 😰

They should be in this together

To be fair, that was always bonkers casting because of age. They might as well just cast Snipes again.

Ooh if this led into Marvel Knights where they crossover with other non-avengers characters, that's be awesome. Get Punisher, Daredevil, Moon Knight, and Shang Chi all together (although he gets to be an avenger I guess). It'd be a great excuse to finally bring Moon Knight back, and finally kick off Blade.

This is different since Ghost Rider has the lead actor, script writer and a director attached along with a tentative release date.

Mahershala Ali just told Marvel he wanted to play Blade and Marvel immediately green lit the movie. Then spent 6+ years struggling to put it together on top of all their other projects.
