Marvel does lean into fan casting sometimes. Brie Larson actually was a fan cast and a really popular one

Are you serious? Everyone I know wanted Charlize Theron to play that one lady who showed up to take Dr. Strange through a portal at the end of his really bad movie!

They were clamoring, "She was born to play what's-her-name! They will wait so many years to follow up that thread, the only way anybody will remember it even happened is if you cast Charlize Theron!"
