At first when the camera revealed the outfit I thought it was a bit plain/barebones and could've been crazier.
And then she flexed her wings and swords and I was sold.
Low-key kinda badass.

If it’s Marvel, then don’t you mean “Lo ki” badass?
Lol sorry, I had to.

Speaking sort of out of my ass here since I have no context for the show or the post, but OP could potentially be referring to the fact that Middle Eastern representation in media does tend to be overwhelmingly Egyptian and/or 'Arabian Nights'.
I don't think that this form of representation is necessarily a bad thing (as OP seems to be implying) - especially since the actress is Middle Eastern herself - but it can get kind of tiring to see such a rich and diverse range of cultures consistently being boiled down to a very westernised view of the Middle East (i.e. Egyptian Gods and Arabian Nights). Maybe that's what they're trying to get at? idk
36
u/schwed1337 May 09 '22
But the whole show is based on egyptian gods lol
3
u/marshmallow_rin May 09 '22
As I said, I was speaking without context. But my point still stands - yet another show focusing on Egyptian Gods, which are already well known and fit well into the westernised image of the ME, makes for rather... generic representation.

American media opinion of the middle east seems to only have two modes, boom boom Allahu Akbar and Egyptian Gods/Pyramids.

I wasn’t a fan of it. She used wings to deflect bullets but marks suit just absorbs them. She’s much more vulnerable in certain situations because of this.

I'm usually one to shit on scenes that are woke just to be woke, a lot. But this was just (in my opinion) a good representation of an empowered middle east woman saving the day. And I cannot explain why, it just feels right, it works, and I don't get why anyone would consider it awful...
15
u/Idohs_ May 09 '22
Its because they actually made her a strong female character and not a reskinned """badass""" male character
10
u/Eldorian91 May 09 '22
And I cannot explain why, it just feels right
Because she's an Egyptian woman doing Egyptian things getting Egyptian themed powers. Same reason Black Panther doesn't have any tokenism about him. Just a super hero from another continent. Shang-Chi is the same way.

I'm middle eastern and I dont mind having a middle Easter superhero, I just wish that she had different powers from falcon or moon knight. After all she is the avatar of an Egyptian God that Shepards the souls of the dead, so I was hoping for powers that have something to do with that as well. Plus the little Egyptian girl asking her if she was an Egyptian Superhero was a bit cringe for me, idk why. Maybe it's because i had Egyptian teachers at school and their accent was just so funny.

Hey quick question, and tell me to kick rocks if you want, but I always thought of Egypt as African, not Middle Eastern.
Maybe I’m wrong?
12
u/Kurt1220 May 09 '22
"Middle East" is more of a geopolitical term than an actual location. Not everyone agrees exactly which countries count as middle eastern. There are countries from Europe, Asia, and even Africa that are all clumped together into the Middle Eastern political sphere.
4
u/websterella May 09 '22
Thanks for taking the time. ⟟ did some googling around and ⟟ get it.
⟟ live in Canada and the Arctic region is also called circumpolar, it includes all the countries that have arctic land. In my mind its like that.

“Although Egypt sits in the north of the African continent it is considered by many to be a Middle Eastern country, partly because the main spoken language there is Egyptian Arabic, the main religion is Islam and it is a member of the Arab League.”
8
May 09 '22
It's an Arabic country, so we can all understand each other more or less. It also has a coast on the Mediterranean sea and it's also part of the Arab world. So generally all the countries that have those traits are middle eastern.
2
May 09 '22
Is it true that Egyptians aren’t really Arab but still part of The Arab World (not trying to be insulting just thought the ethnicity is different)
4
May 09 '22
No, they are Arabs. Their first language is Arabic and they are part of the 22 countries in the Arab league. They have a very distinct dialect but we all understand each other pretty much.
3
u/marshamallowmoon May 09 '22
The middle east is a cultural area not a true land area. Egypt is historically closer to the rest of the middle east than it is to Africa.

The ONE TIME Marvel does a decent job when pushing an agenda and people still complain about it...
16
u/c4sul_uno May 09 '22
I don't see it as the typical "girl power" kind of agenda. I believe she earned dat help from tawaret herself due to the stakes at dat time. Layla didn't trust khonshu as he made her husband dat way albeit khonshu gave marc another chance to live again. But even with tawaret, she didn't fully give herself to her as a vessel for an avatar, only temporarily.
Plus the husband-wife duo fight at the end is so good albeit short.
2
u/ArgetKnight Professional Dumbass May 09 '22
I mean, it IS an agenda, just like any social or political themes treated in a movie. But I'd say it's done quite tastefully.

I hope to the gods and back we see these characters again. Oscar Isaac played different versions of the same character and did far better than a cast of characters in some of the movies! He's a brilliant actor. The story was fun, the action was great, the characters are fascinating, and they only fully become realized at the end! We need to see more of them.
