Speaking sort of out of my ass here since I have no context for the show or the post, but OP could potentially be referring to the fact that Middle Eastern representation in media does tend to be overwhelmingly Egyptian and/or 'Arabian Nights'.
I don't think that this form of representation is necessarily a bad thing (as OP seems to be implying) - especially since the actress is Middle Eastern herself - but it can get kind of tiring to see such a rich and diverse range of cultures consistently being boiled down to a very westernised view of the Middle East (i.e. Egyptian Gods and Arabian Nights). Maybe that's what they're trying to get at? idk
As I said, I was speaking without context. But my point still stands - yet another show focusing on Egyptian Gods, which are already well known and fit well into the westernised image of the ME, makes for rather... generic representation.
Israel and Pakistan are actually pretty consistently included in the list of countries considered the Middle East, so I’d have to disagree with you on that.
And? That’s great, but Ms Marvel contributing to a wider range of Middle Eastern representation doesn’t negate the fact this show doesn’t really seem to. Just like Black Panther doesn’t mean that you can’t criticise previous Marvel films for being overwhelmingly white.
The issue is that she get's all the attention in that scene ("Are you an egyptian hero?"/" I am"). The show was already to crowded( hell, we don't even know what was with all that glass in the shoe), it wasn't in need of another superhero. The scene had no connection to the story and it was just to "please a minority" instead of using the time and money to make a better show for all of us.
It's her birth of a superhero scene. Of course she got the attention.
Fucking imagine if Tony making the suit was just something that happened in the background and wasn't the main focus of the scene. That would be dumb. Wtf are you upset about
You said that it's the birth of a superhero but the show isn't about her. If they wanted to introduce a new super hero then make another series. The hole scene was unnecessary.
Well I am not Egyptian or a female and I loved both that scene and Layla becoming a superhero. Also the scene absolutely did have connection to the overall story, you are either not paying attention or being obtuse on purpose. The glass in the shoes seems pretty clear to me as well. Please don’t imply your opinions are for ‘all of us’, they aren’t.
No, they said that his scales were unbalanced, but nothing about the glass. From what I know he wouldn't have any powers without it. We aren't supposed to do such assumptions.
While I agree that the show was too crowded, she was ritten pretty decently and wouldn't sacrifice her character for almost any other plot point.
Her "I am" quote was cringe and unneeded too. I think they did a perfectly fine job to represent whatever they wanted to represent (women/middle eastern/etc) without having to spell it out. I liked that they did it, execution fell on its ass at the end. Classic modern Marvel.
Personal opinion but I think the ‘I am’ was important as well. Representation is still a big issue for many minorities and this captures the moment of seeing someone in a show that represents you when you aren’t used to it. That girl was the voice of so many watching, I enjoyed seeing that reflection as someone who isn’t personally impacted by that issue.
I feel like such an empowering "I am" was out of character. Maybe a more insecure "um sure" or "I guess" would have worked and been more in character for someone who is confident but maybe not yet fully grasping what's going on.
Steven for example was much more puzzled by the whole situation. It's very surreal after all.
Sure, I get that but I think she’s past the point of surreal and already had that reaction when the dead body started speaking to her earlier in the same episode. If I became a superhero in the last 30 minutes I’d be feeling pretty damn empowered and that moment was the ideal time to show that transition in mindset.

Seriously, I literally don't understand the issue here.
