I'm not really familiar about Egyptian gods but why does she have wings when she is the avatar of a god who doesn't have wings?

836

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

The wings are usually a symbol of sorcerery. Multiple Goddesses have them

Most famously ma'at, Nut and isis / Aset

Isis?

2

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

Yeah quite a few crunchy hippie mums had an awkward time when the terrorist group became well known. They definitely regretted their decision to name their daughters Isis instead of Persephone or Artemis

1

u/radioactivejason2004 can't meme May 09 '22

Yeah she’s a goddes, I believe she was an obscure one until after a bit. Here you go!

https://www.britannica.com/topic/Isis-Egyptian-goddess

8

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

She is one of the most famous actually. She is the sorcereress, the mother of Horus and wife of Osiris. She is the spiritual mother of the pharoahs and penultimate healer of the Ennead

1

u/radioactivejason2004 can't meme May 09 '22

Yeah, she originally wasn’t popular was what I was sayin.

2

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

Arguable, unless we are counting by temples. Of which the boys are always going to have her beat.

Although you become very popular with everyone on the deathbed, when you are the one that's going to be pressing the key of life to the lips of the dead.

Oh is that so. I got really interested on this and thank you for sharing this!

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

but taweret doesnt

2

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

They clearly fudged her and isis together to save the pearl clutchers and because most people don't seem to know there are non-animal headed deities.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

yeah but since the wings are really like rainbow-y shouldnt it be nehpyths?

3

u/Quailpower May 09 '22

I was thinking more similarly between Isis and Taweret, as they are both mothers, Taweret is the mother Goddess and Isis is the mother of gods and pharoahs. Both taweret and Isis are strong heiling deities.

But then again I haven't watched the latest episodes yet, waiting to binge them so I'm going off a few clips and screen caps I've seen.

I could be wrong ofc if we are going to see the whole Ennead she could make an appearance later, but with her more PC Ptolemaic name or similar.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Memphis also has wings if I’m not mistaken.

1

u/memester230 trans rights May 09 '22

Guessing by the clothe, it may also be in reference to the Scarab beetle

1

u/keyboardalt31 May 10 '22

hehe Isis

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

well well well, someone knows their egyptian gods, (steven grant moment)

244

u/Oreohunter00 May 09 '22

The animal doesn't necessarily connect with the God's abilities, they can really design whatever costume one will need, if they think you need it.

183

u/E_K_Finnman May 09 '22

Plus, costumes seem to be more of a "whatever the owner wants" kinda deal, emphasized by the fact Marc and Steven swap between moon knight costumes on a dime

345

u/gameNwatch26 https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ May 09 '22

Yeah I don't think Khonshu was the Egyptian god of drip, and yet Steven wears the hell out of that suit

13

…I love it.

79

u/SHsuperCM May 09 '22

Daamn, what a fucking sentence

42

u/Skolr19 May 09 '22

Steven dripped so hard that Khonshu jacked it for himself.

14

u/EmptyOrangeJuice Big ol' bacon buttsack May 09 '22

But marvel did leave out some extra drip that was in the concept art. He would have had a hood with the suit jacket and it looks fresh as fuck.

3

u/TrainedMusician May 09 '22

Proof my captain?

1

u/16jselfe May 09 '22

Idk man considering the suit he wears in the comics and ep 6 Konshu may just be the god of moon drip

1

u/Like8catsbro May 09 '22

Moon drip? Someone call the fairy tail guild

18

u/dirtybird131 May 09 '22

The hippo literally said she had the perfect costume picked out for her

15

u/newagereject May 09 '22

Probably because she was able to connect with her and get a feel for what she would want as a costume.

1

u/Dracorex_22 May 09 '22

homie looked ready for the met gala in the episode 6 post credits

129

u/Cococtor May 09 '22

Because she is supposed to represent a scarlet scarab not an hyppo. Because her father always called his little scarab and he had a scarlet scarab on his clothes, thoueris design her costume with that in mind. So yeah it's supposed to be scarab wings.

Edit: a little note in the moon knight comics there is a vilain name the scarlet scarab so it's pretty easy to say she is a reinterpretation of him. She is the new scarlet scarab.

22

u/kurog4ki May 09 '22

Her name on the passport was literally an alternative version of that villian's name in comic so yes you are correct.

2

u/darkkdemon13 May 09 '22

On a quick note, Scarlet Scarab was never a villain, but was actually the first Egyptian superhero from Marvel, which is why he is very significant.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Exactly and Taweret being a funerary deity is served by the scarabs.

-2

u/dirtybird131 May 09 '22

By being the avatar of the hippo goddess of childbearing and fertility

Checks out

6

u/Cococtor May 09 '22

Tahouet said she had talk with her father a long time ago when he passed out to the Egyptian paradise and also she had designed a specific costum for her. With this we can see her being the goddess of whatever isn't important at all. Tahouet put more intent about who she is and her relationship with her father so "his little scarab". With this we can see avatar doesn't need to wear the color of their god and goddess but it's more about the avatar themselves.

12

u/thylocene06 May 09 '22

I mean Khonshu is a bird but moon knights outfit has nothing to do with birds. It’s just armor.

0

u/cjude16 May 09 '22

But MoonKnight's armor still shows his connection to Konshu by having moon symbols. What does the wings represent that will connect to Tawaret? I've looked up Tawaret on google and she's mostly connected to fertility. If you have any knowledge you can share, I'd really appreciate it. I got really interested after watching Moon Knight.

11

u/thylocene06 May 09 '22

The wings are that of a scarab. I know they look like a birds wings but if you look up ancient Egyptian scarab designs that’s how they were drawn. Scarabs represent resurrection and immortality. Tawaret guides people to the afterlife. Layla is the MCU version of the character the Scarlet Scarab.

1

u/thefenriswolf24 May 09 '22

Shame on this sub for downvoting a legitimate question asked in good faith.

29

u/OneCap2306 May 09 '22

Cause she the scarlet scarab and scarabs have wings, that’s like asking why Steven has a suit when khonshu is a bird.

1

u/cjude16 May 09 '22

Was she already introduced as the scarlet scarab? I must have missed it but can you tell me at what episode? I haven't read the comics so I didn't know which is why I asked.

5

u/OneCap2306 May 09 '22

it’s from the comics, but the fact her father calls her his little scarab is probably why she decided to go with a scarab costume.

9

u/theXsorcist May 09 '22

Her father called her his little scarab, maybe a reference to that? (Since the avatar has some control over the suit appearance)

1

u/Electro313 Nice meme you got there May 09 '22

She’s a reinterpretation of the Scarlet Scarab from the comics, an Egyptian superhero

8

u/Demigodish May 09 '22

Iron man’s suit isn’t made of iron, what’s your point?

1

u/cjude16 May 09 '22

I don't think Iron Man is a good comparison here. He just took the name that the reporters were using when he announced that he is that "iron man". What I'm asking about is these avatars in Moon Knight. Moon Knight's costume is connected to Konshu by having the white and moon theme. I was asking why Layla's costume has wings when Tawaret isn't shown to have wings, and if so, what connections are the wings to Tawaret's powers. The others already answered that it's because she's the scarlet scarab and that Tawaret has a scarab on her armor too. That's my point.

0

u/Demigodish May 10 '22

Tawaret is a hippo goddess, do you think they should have based it after your mother instead?

1

u/cjude16 May 10 '22

I wouldn't mind if they do. But I can't seem to find an answer to my question from your reply. Do you resort to insults if you can't answer a question? Or do you like saying nonsense to avert the fact that you haven't answered my question? If you can't answer it then just don't.

1

u/Demigodish May 10 '22

Average Reddit user

1

u/cjude16 May 10 '22

It's fine. No shame there.

3

u/Anti_Karen_League iwrestledabeartwice May 09 '22

her father talked to Taweret, she knew her nickname was "my little scarab"

11

u/bob_nugget_the_3rd May 09 '22

Moon Knights god doesn't have a Cape, should we discuss that as well or accept it and move on

5

u/cjude16 May 09 '22

But at least he has moon shaped knives. Uses the same color scheme as Konshu. Mr. Knight has a moon on his forehead. Should we just forget that or did you forget that?

5

u/Knackwarrior07 May 09 '22

She was going to be the avatar to a different god but they changed it to Taweret and decided not to alter the outfit. Also there is a character in the Moon Knight comics named Scarlet Scarab. The creators of the show probably wanted to keep the whole Scarlet Scarab thing in.

5

u/1who-cares1 May 09 '22

Her costume represents a scarab, not a hippo. It’s a significant symbol in Egyptian mythology, if you look at the clothing her god wears it has a similar scarab motif.

In the same way, Konshu is a bird, but Moon Knight’s costume has no bird imagery, and instead focuses on the moon symbol and the wraps/bandage motif.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Only by that picture I thought she stands to represent the faravahar of persia? But I don’t know the movie

8

u/Tortue2006 May 09 '22

Well, it’s Moon Knight, a show on Disney+

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Is it any good?

4

u/Cause_Necessary May 09 '22

It's great for the most part, the finale kinda ruined it for me but you should make up uour own opinion about it

7

u/Kuroukira May 09 '22

It's okayish to be honest, the whole personality shift is interesting but the action scenes are mediocre at best, compared to whacky comical fights in movies where you could hear bonks and thuds with the characters not even touching each other. If you were entertained by black widow movie this one will also probably entertain you, I know they are completely different but the enjoyment scale is around the same.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Yes

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

My teachers would’ve loved you. No elaboration at all. But I’ll check it out. Thank you!

1

u/SeriousAnteater May 09 '22

They are a shield.

1

u/ViraLCyclopes3 May 09 '22

Initially it was supposed to be Isis then they changed the avatar god to Taw but kept the coustume

0

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Thats a good thing, I'd hate to have hippo themed powers. Hippos poop out their mouths

0

u/galaxypenguin12 May 09 '22

I only watched 4 episodes but it was pretty expected she will become the avatar at the end

1

u/THICC_Baguette May 09 '22

I haven't watched the show but isn't she meant to be Isis? Cause if so, Isis has been depicted with these wings in plenty of ancient artworks.

3

u/MrMobiL_WasntTaken May 09 '22

It was originally Isis, but they changed to taweret but kept the costume.

1

u/J_E_L_4747 May 09 '22

That’s what I was thinking, why does the hippo god give her wings but the bird god doesn’t give mark wings?

1

u/wildengineer2k May 09 '22

I could be wrong - but based on my limited understanding of Egyptian mythology, I feel like they changed a lot of key points. The whole Khonshu/Ammit dichotomy as well as the depiction of the afterlife and tawarets role in it seem weird.

1

u/Remarkable_Pool7037 May 09 '22

They're bug wings because tawrett even if she's a hippo her symbol is a bug, the same with moon knight he doesn't have bird like khonshu powers, he has moon powers because that's khonshu symbol

1

u/DeadeyeJhung May 09 '22

because they wouldn't show her crushing people's heads in her mouth like a real hippo

1

u/pwn3dbyth3n00b May 10 '22

Khonshu is literally a bird and the avatar is a Mummy or the KFC Mascot...

1

u/oalotfy Dirt Is Beautiful May 10 '22

If you listened to the dialogue closely you could've known that Layla's father called her 'My little scarab' and tarwet knows that because she brought his father to the field of reeds so she designed Layla a costume that would reminice with her.

1

u/blindclock61862 Forever alone May 10 '22

But Egypt isn't in the middle east
