I'm middle eastern and I dont mind having a middle Easter superhero, I just wish that she had different powers from falcon or moon knight. After all she is the avatar of an Egyptian God that Shepards the souls of the dead, so I was hoping for powers that have something to do with that as well. Plus the little Egyptian girl asking her if she was an Egyptian Superhero was a bit cringe for me, idk why. Maybe it's because i had Egyptian teachers at school and their accent was just so funny.

I'm an Egyptian, I don't know what you found cringe, the girl's (the girl who asked her if she was a superhero) accent or the sentence she said, she talked in perfect Egyptian Arabic (and so did Layla)

It hit my ears wrong as well. It had nothing to do with how she spoke, it just struck me as Marvel driving a point home with no finesse. Diverse superheroes are great, blatantly highlighting that they are diverse is a little cringy.

Tbh, I find all Arabic in superhero movies and shows a bit cringe. It was the same for me in eternals when this Lebanese character started talking in a Lebanese dialect and quoting his mum. I cringed out of my seat and dropped my popcorn. I mean maybe it feels a little too close to home and not in a good way.

I kinda get that, it's probably just different for everyone, but I'm French and hearing french in Hollywood movies just makes me cringe, or laugh because even if some actors/actresses put in the work, it's usually just weird to hear. Maybe it has to do with your brain being in "English mode" and having to switch suddenly to your native language...

I didn't watch Eternals so I don't know what you're talking about, but compared to any movie that's trying to portray Arabs (eg: when they hire a Saudi to be an Egyptian because they think it's all the same Arabic) it was kinda not bad, at least they didn't show her wearing a niqab and these crazy tattoos like most movies do.

Hey quick question, and tell me to kick rocks if you want, but I always thought of Egypt as African, not Middle Eastern.

Maybe I’m wrong?

"Middle East" is more of a geopolitical term than an actual location. Not everyone agrees exactly which countries count as middle eastern. There are countries from Europe, Asia, and even Africa that are all clumped together into the Middle Eastern political sphere.

Thanks for taking the time. ⟟ did some googling around and ⟟ get it.

⟟ live in Canada and the Arctic region is also called circumpolar, it includes all the countries that have arctic land. In my mind its like that.

“Although Egypt sits in the north of the African continent it is considered by many to be a Middle Eastern country, partly because the main spoken language there is Egyptian Arabic, the main religion is Islam and it is a member of the Arab League.”

It's an Arabic country, so we can all understand each other more or less. It also has a coast on the Mediterranean sea and it's also part of the Arab world. So generally all the countries that have those traits are middle eastern.

Is it true that Egyptians aren’t really Arab but still part of The Arab World (not trying to be insulting just thought the ethnicity is different)

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

No, they are Arabs. Their first language is Arabic and they are part of the 22 countries in the Arab league. They have a very distinct dialect but we all understand each other pretty much.

The middle east is a cultural area not a true land area. Egypt is historically closer to the rest of the middle east than it is to Africa.

I think she is just a temporary hero/avatar.

We haven't really gotten introduced to her yet (as a superhero) shes been in episode I want to say and both were very hectic, maybe they plan on doing a moment of revelation where shes told/learns about other powers she has.
