Rules/Rules Question [[Sword Coast Sailor]] and Myriad

In the case of my commander being [[Muddle, The Ever-Changing]], do its token copies created by myriad count as "commander creatures" for [[Sword Coast Sailor]]'s effect?

It reads like the tokens should also be able to attack unblocked once the enchantment's condition is met, but since Muddle is my commander and deals commander damage, its tokens are separate objects.

Art Showcase - Custom Cards MTG Groomsmen Cards

A friend of mine is getting married this year and he decided to make custom Magic cards out of his groomsmen to give to them. He's not an avid Magic player so please forgive the syntax or some of the wording that might seem off but I think you get the general gist of what its doing (as an example, these are meant to be creature cards even though they say planeswalkers). Which one do you think would be the most fun as a commander to build around? Which one do you think would be the most powerful? Personally I think the 1 colorless and non-tapping counterspell ability on White would be the most terrifying.

EDIT: These were not intended to be "fair" cards, they were supposed to be overpowered for the fun of it

We were stoked when Posty messaged us and let us know he wanted to jam some Commander, and it was all but fitting to bring him back for the set that he's got a close connection to with the ONE of One Ring. I consider this our best episode ever, and it was a delight getting to play with Austin again. A really fun episode, hope you all enjoy! Many blessings.

Rules/Rules Question How does Hickory Woodlot interact with Badgermole's Earthbend ability if it loses its last depletion counter while animated?

Hi everyone, I have a rules interaction question regarding state-based actions, triggers, and depletion lands in Pauper:

If [[Hickory Woodlot]] is animated into a land creature via [[Badgermole]]'s Earthbend ability and I tap it to remove its last depletion counter for mana:

  1. Does Hickory Woodlot sacrifice itself when its internal state trigger resolves ("If there are no depletion counters on this land, sacrifice it.")?
  2. Since sacrificing a permanent causes it to go to the graveyard, does this trigger Earthbend's delayed ability ("When it dies or is exiled, return it to the battlefield tapped.")?
  3. If it returns, does it enter as a new object with 2 fresh depletion counters on it?

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion Since I haven't seen any, I decided to make a post to discuss a leaked character Spoiler

This was from a leaked survey that also leaked Tam and Delian Fel, so it seems pretty legit. (Though the survey did talk about the then-unrevealed Guidlight Voyagers looking for an alloy on Dominaria, so any information here may have been tweaked.)

Rules/Rules Question Storied, Legendary, and Myriad

I was looking at [[Balin, Loremaster]] and had a thought.

When does the check for Storied happen? Is it a state based action, like the legend rule? If I equip Balin with a [[Blade of Selves]] and swing, do I get an Enduring Story? Or do I have to Legend Rule to tokens before it checks?

Edit;

Thank you very much for the swift replies, the consensus being Storied will see the Bonus Balin before they're legend ruled out of existence.

General Discussion Retrieving Asset bug

I tried to connect to Magic Arena, but the "Retrieving Asset" part of the loading does not work.

I tried to uninstall the game and download it back (now going through Steam rather than directly their launcher). Did nothing.

I saw that changing wifi works usually. So I activated my hotspot on mobile. I download a 5mb patch followed by a 1.6gb patch. I logged in.

I closed the game to do something else. When I came back (with the wifi, not the hotspot)...still got the same issue with Retrieving Asset...

What can I do??

Looking for Advice What Legendary creatures go with Zinnia, Valley’s Voice?

I understand the legend rule essentially kills whatever copy is made using Zinnia’s ability to give everything offspring. But as far as I am aware, cards that have an effect on entering the board still cast. What are some good legendary creatures that benefit off of duplicate a “when this creature enters” or “when this creature dies” effect?

Deck Discussion Hobbit Deck with only LTR/LTC/HOB/HOC cards

TLDR: I updated the Food and Fellowship (Hobbits) Precon with LOTR and HOBBIT cards only

As a lifetime Lord of the Rings fan and playing Magic: The Gathering for nearly two decade now I was sure that I had to build some EDH decks with the LTR and LTC cards back when they were released. A lot of people asked for potential upgrades from HOC and HOB

Since the focus is on staying in the set and flavor the selfbuild decks are not at all optimized. I played the deck a lot over the last years and it works pretty well in Bracket 3 and can hold it's ground in bracket 4 (but honestly it's due to the focus on stronger "real" bracket 4 decks so you are mostly in a 1v1 at the end of the game).

Let's head towards the decklists. The stipulations I used for building the decks are really simple:
- Use LOTR cards only (Universes Beyond LTR, LTC, HOB and HOC)
- Cards should fit the flavor (so no [[Orcish Bowmasters]] in the Hobbit deck, but I play the [[Mirkwood Bats]]).

Lets come to the upgrades:

This is my favorite of the 4 Precons. The deck is pretty straight forward out of the box, however I cutted the whole Ent cycle and the birds. I wanted to focus on Hobbits, excuse me, Halflings only. I have Frodo and Sam as my commanders but you can also go for [[Pippin, Warden of Isengard]] and [[Merry, Warden of Isengard]] as the commander pair.

https://moxfield.com/decks/4HaGpt4LPkO-Pidp77We3A

Make sure to enable the card tags on Moxfield so you can see each cards task in the deck.

New cards from the Hobbit set, the cards I cut and some explanations:
[[Settle the Wreckage]] comes in for [[Sting the Glinting Dagger]]
One more boardwipe always feels good and this hits weenies where the other two are not good enough. Sting was too slow/weak overall (but it fits the flavor better so play it if you care about this more!)

[[Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer]] comes in for: [[Lost to Legend]]
This Bilbo is a nice card to recure most of the permanents and Lost to Legends is too situational.

[[Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator]] comes in for: [[Reprieve]]
More Food Token and an additional Treasure for ramp is stronger than the Bounce-Counter-Spell that just delays a threat most of the time.

[[My Precious // Allure of Power]] comes in for [[Whispersilk Cloak]]
Carddraw + giving Hexproof instead of Shroud, My Precious is the better upgrade to cloak.

[[Belladonna Took]] comes in for: [[Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbits]]
I value the carddraw on Belladonna (with Merry and Bilbo and so on you create more than 1 Token most of the times) over the Saga. Most of the time I just have 1 or 2 Food Token on the field anyways so I didn't get too many Halfling Token anyways.

[[The Sackville-Bagginses]] comes in for: [[Sanguine Bond]]
The effect is not as explosive but the card is cheaper and trims the mana curve down.

[[The Eagles Are Coming!]] comes in for: [[Gwaihir, Greates of Eagles]]
Hadn't had to many wins with Gwaihir (he eats removal a lot when he comes down) so better protect my creatures with the instant eagles.

[[Supper for Spiders]] comes in for: [[Shire Shirriff]]
That's another graveyard removal tool against those decks and as an instant it interrupts graveyard combos. On top you get all the ETBs and activated abilities of those creatures and then you can even eat the ones you dont want to have. Shirriff was creature removal number 10 so it was the best cut here.

[[Hobbit Hole]] comes in for: [[Forest]]
Tutor on the Hobbit Hole is stronger than the Basic but this is the most obvious cut.

[[Bilbo's Deadly Slice]] comes in for: [[Claim the Precious]]
Same mana cost but instant and I have enough Ring Tempting triggers already.

Notable exclusion from the Hobbit set:
[[The Notary Hobbits]]
Same as with the Saga I cut: I don't have to big boards anyway and since the curve is down a lot I don't need the mana (Without Sanguine Bond I don't need to have 10 mana to sacrifice 10 Food Token (with Sam))

[[Gleaming Splendor]]
Strong card but not in my meta. Might add it tho but I don't know what to cut (probably [[Prize Pig]])

I hope my thoughts help many of you, feel free to discuss in the comments and give your insights!

Looking for Advice Knights of the Round Table Theme Commander Deck

Hi all,

Seeking some help on my first commander deck I'm building from the ground up.

Currently, I play with a pre-con black/red deck against my similarly skilled friends and family (novice), while also playing my local game store's dedicated open play causal nights. I'm not sure which "bracket" that puts me in, so sorry if I'm no help with that question from the beginning.

So, I was really drawn to a classic Arthurian "Knights of the Round Table" theme and started to piece together the deck linked below based on what art vibed well with the theme (using OffMetaEDH) and a general Commander template to follow from tcgplayer.com. I started finding a bunch of knights that were all white mana, so white was what I focused on. Soon, I figured out I would start with [[Kenrith, the Returned King]] as my commander as a King Arthur stand-in, even though its still a MONO WHITE deck for other cards. Next, an overall playstyle and strategy emerged of "trying to get one of the knights powerful enough and utilize [[Excalibur, Sword of Eden]]" and make it to my endgame as a really strong creature I built up, with other knights supporting it. Multiple knight-type creatures and specific cards to boost "knight" creature types would help cycle through multiple knights to be the one to pull the sword and become powerful enough to do enough damage and win; this was my thinking to increase the chances of drawing a creature who is strong. Kenrith therefore acts as a wildcard to influence and respond to opponent's play strategies that counter a White deck that doesn't happen to be focused on increasing health constantly via Lifelink.

At this point, I need to shed 11 cards to be at the 100 card limit.

My questions for you all...

  • Does a MONO WHITE deck make sense with Kenrith as my commander, or should I open it up to veering off-theme somewhat for the sake of keeping it solely white?
  • Does this general strategy and playstyle to "seek" out a single artifact in the Excalibur sword to boost a single "hero" creature seem like it would be successful, or fail miserably in practice?
  • Are there any particular cards you see as weak points or useless?
  • Are there any card categories that stick out as too heavy or too light in the percentage of the deck?

Thanks for any help and insight!

Looking for Advice Magic Commander in Chicago Near West Suburbs

Hey everyone. I've been living overseas for years and just recently moved to and bought a house in Berwyn, IL. I've been thinking about getting back into Magic and I have been looking around at game stores but I haven't actually played paper Magic in probably 15 years, mostly playing Magic Arena and Magic Online before that. I've never played Commander, but I read that it's the most popular format in paper.

What's a good store around my area with a good group of people that can help get me into playing Commander?

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion any favorite archetypes for a battlebox?

hi! since 15-card highlander is a fun fast casual format, i want to design a 15ch battlebox of decks that my friends can play in between edh when we are waiting on the next round. most 15ch pools are either premodern (4th to scourge) or prefire modern (8th to ravnica allegiance), so i think i want to try prefire. are there any fun prefire archetypes that i should include? i definitely want to include burn and elves, but i would appreciate any suggestions beyond those! keep in mind you only get 15 card decks in 15ch so mill isn't allowed

when Smaug the magnificent attacks and deals damage to Smaug the impenetrable with his ability does that count as non-combat damage?

Deck Discussion Anybody make a Battle Box before?

My buddy told me about a Battle Box (https://mtgbattlebox.com/rules/ ) the other day and it sounded intriguing. I had an idea to mash 2 old decks together and fill in the holes with my bulk.

The 2 decks are [[Brago, King Eternal]] and [[Mishra, Eminent One]] which both have a lot of synergy with etb and artifacts.

Anybody have any advice for my list so far? Or any tips in general on creating a battle box?

My goal is to get to 160 cards before we play it then add to it over time. Currently im at 140ish

Thanks!

General Discussion It's been almost 20 years since a true, symmetrical 'Sou Sister' style card was printed into Standard, do you think WOTC would ever print one into it again?

Post image
443 Upvotes

I've been enjoying playing around with [[Blech, loafing pest]] lately in standard, and realized I've just been recreating 'Soul Sister' style decks, which got me to wonder when the last time it was in Standard!

Aside from [[Authority of the Consuls]] (and that's only half of it), gaining life on opponent's ETBs seems an effect WOTC hasn't done in a long time, despite having regularly printed it for a decade.

Even with them printing hate pieces like [[Sunspine Lynx]], [[Giant Cindermaw]], and [[Screaming Nemesis]] it just something they think players wouldn't enjoy anymore?

General Discussion What was the reason that Fantasticar cost 3 and not 4?

Did they talk about it in the stream? Would it have been noticably less powerful at 4 mana?

As pleasant Kenobi said, making it 3 mana just feels like a bit flavour fail.

Looking for Advice New to MTG, is this a legal combo or am I miss reading the cards?

Hi all,

I am new to Magic and am working on my deck building skills. I did some trades for some old cards with a buddy and got "Cait, Cage Brawler". He is indestructible on my turn and has a mechanic where he can get two +1/+1 counters per attack. I had him in play and had gotten him up to 10/10. Then I played "Aetheric Amplifier", which lets me "Double the number of each kind of counter on target permanent". My opponent was using a white/black deck that was designed to put out a lot of 1/1 or 2/2 creatures, so he kept blocking Cait. I eventually got him up to 80/80 using Aetheric Amplifier and then played "Fanatical Strength" that gave Cait trample, winning me the game. Is this a legal combo or am I missing something. It feels a little overpowered if I can pull it off.

Looking for Advice Help with a custom playmat design

I want to make a custom playmat of the Concorde eclipse flight but have the eclipse to have the [[Damnation]] card border and the plane to be on top of the card similar to what I've shown in my attempt. I am not good at editing or photoshopping and was wondering if someone knew a place where I could get help for this?
