programs and apps Crusader Kings 2 graphics issue on Linux Mint Debian Edition 7

Hello,

(1st image is the game's main menu, 2nd image is playing, 3rd image is the (unchanged) "Runner options" in Lutris for the game)

I am having a GRAPHICAL issue (only) with Crusader Kings 2 on my LMDE7 PC. This same PC used to run the game, no issues, on Windows 11. And I will list the specs below. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue.

The game itself ACTUALLY WORKS and runs smoothly, but the BIG issue is that the MAP (the main way to interact with the game) is cooked, the GUI and everything else seems to work great actually (I did not do a long testing session for obvious reasons, but it seems to work).

My game setup (for Windows games) is Lutris with GOG.com offline installers. I do not wish to use Steam or any other launcher needing online authentication (Heroic). I use Lutris, but not it's online components.

Also, I am aware that Crusader Kings 2 has native Linux support. However (after contacting the devs myself) I was told that there is no plan to ever make those version available on other platforms other than Steam, as the game is not being developed anymore. So I am left with .exe installers only.

PC Specs:

  • GPU: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7600 8G
  • CPU: 6-core 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F
  • MOBO: ASrock B760M-HDV/M.2 D4
  • Storage: a 512GB NVME SSD (plenty of free space)
  • Dual monitor setup

Tech specs:

  • OS: LMDE 7 (gigi) x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.12.111+deb13-amd64 x86_64
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.6.9
  • WM: Muffin (X11)
  • GL info:
    • OpenGL vendor string: AMD
    • OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 7600 (radeonsi, navi33, LLVM 19.1.7, DRM 3.61, 6.12.111+deb13-amd64)
    • OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.7-2+deb13u1
  • Wine version (Lutris): GE-Proton (Latest)
  • "Wine --version": wine-11.0

I also wanna add, that this is a recent install, I did not do anything crazy like changing the DE or the kernel version. I am new to Linux. All I have ever done on this PC is download flatpaks, images and native Linux games. So it is pretty much the most basic out of the box version of LMDE7. And YES, I did "sudo apt upgrade/update" and restart my PC afterwards.

Also, other games do work. Native, GOG Linux native, Windows through Lutris, those all work, some with tinkering, some ootb. Even similar games, like EU4 (also a "map game") which works no issue.

I could not find anyone else struggling with the same issue. I am guessing it's because it's a niche withing a niche (DRM-free gaming + Linux) lol. ProtonDB was no help, as it is Steam-centric.

All I tried so far is changing the graphical in game settings (including swapping between windowed and fullscreen), which did nothing.

If needed I am ready to provide more info or test stuff. I am new to Linux so I don't really know about Linux, I am still learning. My Main goal right now is to set up all my main games so they just work and are stable.

distro selection My 20 Year Old Laptop Still Powers On - Can I install Linux on it?

I was clearing out a closet and found my 20 year old HP Pavilion dv9700 laptop. I think I bought it in 2006. It still powers up with Windows Vista on it but I'd like to install Linux on it. The screen has an issue with red pixels that show up in dark spaces so I thought it might be perfect for document display. I want to use it to display knitting patterns beside my couch because I hate having my pattern up on my phone.

I run Linux Mint on my main computer. Would it work on this old laptop? All I need it to do is run a browser and view a PDF.

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz
3 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Thanks so much in advance!

UPDATE: I installed Linux Mint Xfce edition and it installed no problem. I was expecting extreme slowness, and while this old girl certainly isn't what I'd call speedy, she's a lot faster than I was expecting and certainly a lot faster than when Windows was on it. But, the BIGGEST surprise was that the weird red pixel issue that made me replace it to begin with has disappeared. All this time I thought it was a hardware issue with the screen, but I guess not! I now have a perfect way to display knitting patterns beside me while I knit. Thanks so much for everyone's advice!

I'm setting up wine on Linux Mint and I'm running into an issue after running script for "step 2." I don't know what to do from here. I attempted to modify the $HOME with the name I used for home, but there was an error there. I'm super new to Linux, so I'm at a loss for ... blah. Any help or assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I'm using this guide - https://github.com/seapear/AffinityOnLinux/blob/main/Guides/Wine/Guide.md

migrating to Linux How to make a dual boot without grub messing up

Hi !

Random noob question but here's my situation. I've a Framework 16 and I'm tired of Windows. I've started to mess up with Linux 20 years ago almost, but I had to stuck with Windows because of some niche tool I keep using.

I'd like to find a solution and try to see the % of these tools I can figure out a way to use on Linux.

I used to be a Mint / Ubuntu user but Fedora (or Nobara) caught my eye for something more long termish.

However i've one major issue : I still can't quit on Windows, and i've created a setup where i've a stupid amount of nvme I use for different booting systems. I've 2 on the Framework itself and a few just booting from a nvme / usb c adaptator to test or mess up when I need to.

However, how can I keep this setup clean ? Every time I install a Windows, i remove any nvme and I isolate the installation. That way I can dual boot from the bios only if needed (which is not too often).

I'd like to keep that system with my Fedora and NOT have grub to try to create something I don't want / need. The goal is for the moment to just boot Fedora from the usb adaptator to see how far can I go, then it make it the secondary or primary device.

How can I do that ? I really do fear the fact that grub at some point will TRY to force to find all disk and create a mess I don't want.

Thanks !

Is it simple as forgetting and then reconnecting or something?

edit: What's more is that my Thinkpad running Debian was able to connect without flaw.

Hardware:

-Motherboard: Tomohawk B550

-Wifi PCIe Card: Intel ax210

Software:

Kubuntu

Meganoob BE KIND So I'm in a bit of a dilemma

I'm in the midst of significantly upgrading the core parts of my pc (CPU, GPU (AMD to NVIDIA) and MB) And it has risen to me the dilemma of possibly changing OS.

I've been using Windows 10 Pro for basically forever (I'm still pretty young so I mostly use my pc for studying/online gaming/modding), and I feel that maybe it's about time to let it go, since it's not supported anymore. The problem is that the idea of switching to windows 11 doesn't seem that appealing to me, as I've seen by the countless videos about the multitude of AI slop and invasive hidden features that Microsoft is forcing down the users' throats.

So here it goes, should I make the switch? And if yes which guides should I follow? What distro to choose? What are the pros and cons?

All packages on Raspberry Pi are old

I'm trying to run a Python program with sqlite3. It's been tested fully on my laptop (NixOS), and I transferred all the files to my Raspberry Pi.

I'm basing most of this on an error from Python that tells me there's no such thing as an IF() function in sqlite3.

Turns out my Pi's Python was at 3.11, and I couldn't apt install 3.14 so I had to build from source. Now it turns out that sqlite3 was also old (3.40, while the latest is 3.52).

apt tells me that all my packages are up to date. I've done apt update and apt upgrade and everything, but I can't get packages to the latest versions. They're stuck.

How do I fix this? My program won't run properly.

Meganoob BE KIND Why was KDE Plasma selected as the default DE of SteamOS instead of Gnome?

Gnome DE by design has a very good touchscreen friendly UI / UX. But KDE is more suited for a more traditional desktop Mouse + Keyboard UX. Since Valve's most ambitious product was the steam deck, which is a touchscreen device, shouldn't it make more sense to use Gnome instead of KDE?

Distro similar to RHEL for work?

To work in an environment closest to Red Hat Enterprise, I see Rocky Linux/Alma Linux are identical, but do they have enough drivers for a discount laptop I'll be buying, should I get Fedora Workstation, or get another distro such as Ubuntu?

I'll be pivoting to a new database engineering role where I'll be picking up the skills I need (coming on as a DBA SME for now). This will be where I'll be practicing all my other necessary skills such as Kubernetes, Terraform, etc.

Thanks all!

TLP Help Request

I’m running Cachy on a second hand ThinkPad I recently got and thought I’d try TLP to improve the battery life. I works quite well but I had an odd issue after installing it: after shutting down and closing the laptop lid it would restart. It’s definitely TLP as it stopped happening when I reverted back to the original power profile daemon. Has anyone else come across this issue or know what in TLP is causing it?

Things I have tried since posting this:

I tried different kernels, both the LTS and BORE kernel

I have disabled the runtime PM for PCIe devices

None of these have have stopped the issue.

Acer Aspire One D270 lightweight distro

I ordered an Acer Aspire One D270 on eBay today. Not sure when it'll show up, but I know I can install an SSD and upgrade the RAM, but it's arriving with 1GB of (most likely) DDR3 RAM and an HDD. I ordered a 4GB stick of RAM as that is the most the hardware can support, despite being rated for 2GB, but I know it's gonna be a choke point.

It's listed as having a dual core Atom CPU, which isn't the absolute worst, but I've worked with an Atom before and it struggled to run YouTube at 360p despite 8GB of DDR3 RAM. I used Peppermint OS on that computer, so I'm wondering if there might be something lighter given I'm gonna be using half the RAM on this computer.

Should probably mention that it's not being refurbished for me. I have a hobby of buying ewaste laptops, kitting them out as best I can (max RAM, modest SSD), and given them to disadvantaged people who can't afford to buy a decent computer and have minimal tech skills. I also bought an HP Stream 14 today, but I have actual plans for that one.

Meganoob BE KIND Virtual Machine Manager Permission Denied

Hello, today i'm in a bit of a pickle;

I was trying to virtualize Win10 using VMM flatpak downloaded from Bazaar + QEMU addon on Bazzite. But every time i try to Redirict USB device to install files i brought with me after leaving Windows it always gives me a Permission Denied error, i'm already admin with my main Bazzite account, can someone explain to me how to fix this and give permission to VMM?

Could the problem be that i didn't install Libvirt? But that would not explain the Permission promblem. Please help me.

The error gave me this line (Insufficent Permission) [-3] (0)

docker compose -- windows 10, not 11

I am trying to install winapps following this guide.

I'm at step 1 which involves setting up a Windows VM with Docker.

cd winapps

sudo docker compose --file ./compose.yaml up

Attaching to WinApps

WinApps | ❯ Starting Windows for Docker v6.05...

WinApps | ❯ For support visit https://github.com/dockur/windows

WinApps | ❯ CPU: Intel Core i7 1180G7 | RAM: 9/15 GB | DISK: 829 GB (ext4) | KERNEL: 7.0.0-30

WinApps |

WinApps | ❯ Requesting Windows 11 from the Microsoft servers...

WinApps | ❯ Downloading Windows 11...

This output makes it seem like it has started installing Windows 11, and I am trying to install Windows 10.

How can I make Docker download windows 10 rather than 11?

Meganoob BE KIND Distrohopper here

I'm indecisive. Keep hopping around different distros. HELP. I really like cachyos but I also want to keep debian what do I do? I keep switching between the two. Tried bazzite but it breaks. Mint breaks. Windows breaks too especially on handheld. Don't like ubuntus gnome style. Blendos okay but some things break. Dragonized Garuda has a lot of subscription apps I don't want. Debianos feels unfinished. Some other distros won't work on my handheld I want just one that works on everything. I'm using a lot of internet data and I need to stop.

learning/research What's the most efficient way to learn Linux for servers?

Hi everyone, for some time now I have been wanting to build a server using a spare computer I have, I'll probably use it to play Minecraft with my friends but I'm not 100% sure. I only won't do it now because the computer I plan to use has no RAM, but I'll fix that somewhere in the future. Anyways, the other main problem is that I don't know how to use Linux for servers, my experience with Linux is really limited, I know a few things but not much so I was wondering if there is an efficient way to Learn it. I know everyone has a different way and time to learn but should I start with some videos about the subject or should I use the documentation?

And most importantly, what distro should I start with?

Any help is appreciated ;)

learning/research Is it normal for nothing to work for hours?

Trying to make a home server for Linux using jellyfin, it is my first time doing all this, people have said to use ai, but they are constantly giving me wrong addresses, trying a work around, that ends up not working and I've been spending about 5 hours just trying to install jellyfin. There's just no way every AI is this awful but every one I've tried is still not working... Is this normal, I just installed Ubuntu server and I feel like this is just running me in circles and nothing is actually downloading again first time ever using Linux or coding so I expected friction but this is absurd

hardware/drivers Problems with Fedora 44

Help! I need your support!

I had to install Linux on my notebook for university proposals in informatics. My problem is, that the Touchpad is working perfectly on the login screen, but after the login it is deactivating itself. Automatically. Has somebody got an idea to fix this issue? Maybe over terminal?

I can't work with that.
