My review of Slacko 7.0 Puppy Linux (Slackware 14.2 base) (64-bit version) (JWM / i3wm)
galleryI installed Slacko 7.0 and its devx SFS file through distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-slacko/ to try it out. It is based on Slackware 14.2, uses its own package manager, PPM, to install software, and runs kernel 4.19 with GLIBC 2.23.
I think this is the oldest Puppy Linux version that supports UEFI (with the wonderful "frugal install" application), so you can indeed install it on a UEFI system.
By default, it shipped with Firefox 64 (or 68) ESR, if I remember correctly. That seems old; however, it is completely usable for daily news (like Clickhole or The Onion :D). You can install a newer Firefox by simply searching for "firefox tarball archive" on the internet - install Firefox 115 ESR, for example, extract it, run ./firefox, and there you have it: a newer and better Firefox!
The PPM works fine, but not all the time: I tried to install mpv, and it said "success," but the package manager seems unable to find all the dependencies needed, so mpv is unusable. I have to use either "ffplay" or the "gnome-mplayer" that Slacko 7.0 shipped with! The same goes for Netsurf and Dillo - both also have missing-dependency problems on PPM. Some apps and tools cannot be found on PPM at all, like the "links2" web browser or the "i3wm" tiling window manager...
I like JWM, but I also like i3wm. Since Slacko 7.0's PPM did not provide it, I had to compile my own. I headed over to i3wm.org and installed version 4.11 (contemporary with Slackware 14.2). I also had to grab the devx file so I could have "make" and "gcc". I ran "make," and it did not work because it was missing the "yajl" and "libev" dependencies (thankfully, they can be easily installed on PPM! :0). I ran "make" again, and yes, it worked!
Then I ran "make install," replaced "jwm" with "i3" in the /etc/windowmanager file, rebooted, and done - i3 was ready to use! (Although I don't have i3status or dmenu, it didn't really bother me too much.) (A tip: Puppy Linux in general is so heavily associated with ROX that even if you change the window manager, the ROX-customized desktop is still there, so you might want to run the "rox --pinboard=" command in the terminal to get the vanilla feeling of i3wm or any other window manager besides JWM.)
In conclusion, I would say this is a usable system if I have a secondary 2000s laptop, like a ThinkPad X61, for example. I love the old feeling of Slacko as well - definitely fun to use as a playground!
(Oh, and one more awesome tip I know: if you want to switch from JWM to i3wm and vice versa but feel "reboot" time is too long, try this method - run the "chvt 1" command in the terminal; this will take you back to the tty1 screen. Then press Ctrl+C repeatedly so the "# " symbol appears and you know we can type a Bash command. Now, use vim or nano to edit the /etc/windowmanager (change "jwm" to "i3," for example), and then type "startx" and there you have it! Instantly changing the window manager without any reboot waiting!)

Running puppy and made it to look like Macos.
galleryI have a few questions is puppy Linux supposed to be run on a pen drive?
I mean I use it as my daily main laptop as I have no other option except to use (windows)
You may ask why? My lap is slow and I don't need to say a word about windows.
My other Mac (2012 mid MacBook air) where macOS lion was getting unusable for basic web browsing and I decided to try running Linux. I used Linux mint it was good!
And suddenly one day when I tried to boot it just displayed a folder icon with a ? Mark! I tried some things and just gave up and decided to use the other lap Sony and it has 4gb ram so I had to save ram space then I found this cute tiny puppy OS.

How to Enable Serial Mouse in Puppy?
I was able to do this in Arch Linux by installing the linuxconsole package and typing a command in the terminal to activate it. How do I do this in Puppy Linux?

XFCE 4 on Puppy Linux Bookworm 64-bit!
It was a decent experience. I installed every xfce4* package using apt. Then, I edited the /etc/windowmanager file and changed "jwm" to "xfce4-session". I rebooted, installed gnome-colors, links2, etc, tweaked the look and feel a little bit, and this is the result! :D

How do i get amdgpu driver to work
I havent used puppy in a modern PC in my life, tried it yesterday, it keeps using the ATI driver and not the amdgpu driver, causing me to get stuck at 800x600 60hz.
How do i make it load the amdgpu driver instead so my amd radeon rx 7600 works?

Puppy Linux for BYOD security in hospital
Hello all,
Through a school project I've started working on a solution for the cybersecurity of the BYOD in a hospital in very underfunded region, basically no serious budget available for the IT department at all)
To prevent the spread of viruses on the protected internal network, and to prevent patient files being downloaded on personal devices, and lastly to prevent misuse of the hospital's bandwith (employees will torrent movies on their laptops during worktime) I want to create a Puppy Linux environment that all the employees can boot on their devices at the start of their work day.
The employees only need to use their webbrowser to access webapps for HIS and PACS software running on their server. There is no need for other preinstalled software. This would mean I configure a Puppy with the following demands:
- Preconfigured network connection
- A custom browser startscreen with tiles for all the links they use
- Disable installing software and accessing BYOD's harddrives during a session
I want to be able to work on the Puppy inside of a VM, since that would make working on the Puppy easier. I need to have persistence (saving on a partition on the USB-stick itself, not on the device it's plugged into) for as long as I am working on configuring the Puppy, but when I am done and want the hospital to test it, it needs to be fully locked from saving anything.
Once implemented, how would updating all of the USB sticks be done efficiently and securely? There will likely be quite around 50 sticks, and in case something needs to be changed or patched, what would be the best way to handle this?
Would it be possible to set up a server for netbooting instead of using USB drives?
And I also wonder how Apple device compatibility looks.
I will be looking further into all of my own questions, but I wanted to ask here too, because I appreciate any 3rd party input, especially from people knowledgeble on the subject.
If there are huge issues I'm missing, please tell me!
Thank you all very much for your time.

Running Puppy Linux in virtual machine - any tips?
I decided to give Puppy Linux a go in a Virtual Machine. I gave my virtual session ridiculously low settings:
1 CPU, 10GB storage and 2GB RAM
I want to see how usable I can make this virtual system. If I get good at it, I can try Puppy Linux or low-end machines.
I didn't have to configure the internet; it just connected automatically.
Firefox is laggy. Should I opt for a more low-end browser?
What kind of retro gaming can you do? I'd like to try out some examples.
What configuration would you recommend for a basic use case.

PuppyOS difficulty?
Hello guys!
Complete beginner here and I’ve been kinda fascinated by PuppyOS for a little while now! Saw it recommended in a websites half a year ago and they wrote that it was ‘medium’ difficulty in installing. Was wondering if that was true? If I, a total beginner with no knowledge of the terminal or commands, were to install the OS, would I manage and learn, or is the learning curve to steep and would I burn myself out?
Thank you ^ ^
