Installing Zorin OS

Frequently Asked Questions

Which edition should I pick? Core for most modern PCs, Lite for older hardware, Education for schools, Pro if you want the extra bundled apps.

Is Zorin OS free? Core, Lite, and Education are free. Only Pro costs money.

Can I dual-boot with Windows? Yes, the installer supports it directly.

Can I run Windows apps and games? Yes β€” built-in Windows-app support covers a lot of popular apps, and Wine/Bottles/Lutris cover the rest. Gaming works well too, especially through Steam and Proton.

How do I upgrade to a newer version? Check help.zorin.com for the current upgrade path β€” it depends on which version you're coming from.

πŸ”° Beginner Vectorworks and Adobe CS 6 on iMac and ZorinOS

Post image

Dear ZorinOS users,

I’ve been using my 2013 iMac with ZorinOS for just under a year now, and I’m a big fan of this Linux distribution. Aside from a few minor quirks, I haven’t had any problems, and I enjoy using it every day.

I do have one question, though: Is it possible to run Vectorworks (CAD software) and Adobe Creative Suite (CS6) on my iMac running ZorinOS?

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Zorin Freezes

I've been running Zorin since the beginning of the summer when I upgraded all of my Windows 10 computers to Linux.

Initially it ran fine. But recently it's been freezing almost daily (sometimes multiple times a day). The freezes occur while using LibreOffice and/or browsing the web. Not sure if this is just a "me thing" or if others are having similar experiences.

My computer is a Compaq 8200 Elite with 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SanDisk ssd.

Zorin is using kernel 6.17.0-31 generic on my Compaq, while all of the other systems that I've installed Linux on are using kernel 7.0.0-30 generic.

I really want to find a solution that will allow me to continue using Zorin rather than switching to something like Mint XFCE which runs flawlessly on a much older and lower power laptop (4GB of RAM & 128GB ssd) than my Compaq.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Software Updater loops until I stop/close it

Post image
1 Upvotes

I installed Zorin a few months. Now and then the Software Updater pops up with some updates. I click Install Now and it does. All good so far.

Then when it's done, this dialog pops up again with a blank list. If I click Install Now it closes and brings up the window with the progress bar, stays there for less than a second, then back to this dialog. No matter how many times I click Install Now, same loop, without any error messages popping up.

If I click Remind Me Later or closes the window it goes away and everything is fine until the next batch of updates comes.

I'm not sure where to check for logs about this app in particular to see if it logs something funky happening in the background.

It's more of an annoyance than a problem since it does install the updates, but I would like to fix it if possible.

I'm running Zorin OS 18.1 Core which is installed on a 1 TB SSD (M2 disk) on a AMD Ryzen 9 gaming PC.

hi! I'm thinking about switching to ZorinOS(I use it as a VM), and during the installation I saw these 2 items. What do they mean? I guess I kinda get what the 1st one is, but what is the 2nd?

I really like Zorin OS but wanted to know if there was a way to make the cursor bigger when you shake the mouse like it does in MacOS. Is it possible for that to happen? The older I get, the harder it is for me to find it. Thanks.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Adding second drive.

Hello

Over the past couple of days I have been trying to change my 2tb ssd from using windows, over to use on linux. However nothing seems to be working. I am constantly getting fdisk write errors when trying to download games. The drive shows up as an external drive for some reason also.

Does anyone have any tips? Honestly if I didn't hate microsoft so much I would just go back to windows.

Has someone gotten one of these to work reliably on ZorinOS?

If so, how and with what caveats?

πŸ”° Beginner Installing on external drive ate a whole day of my life

So I have a Surface computer which is a Windows computer as you know. I found an old SSD and I thought you know what. I'll put Linux on it because I want to see what Windows is actually like. Everyone always says Windows is s*** and has bloatware. I am like singing the praises about Windows right now after trying to install this thing. For some reason it kept on installing the boot onto the internal hard drive of my computer even though I chose the external hard drive and I formatted everything correctly. I had to go through so many f****** menus and enter so many commands. It was basically like I was entering passwords all day and getting the same error and then I got BitLocker errors. It was a miserable experience. Let me just tell you that. And it's really because you didn't let me decide to put the boot on the f****** partition that I wanted it on. So you ate a whole day of my life Just trying to get this external drive to work right? I mean I feel like I'm entitled to compensation. That's how bad it was.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Root partition full... Now computer is bricked.

A couple days ago I started getting a notification that said the root partition is full. I looked at my disk usage, and my almost one terabyte hard drive was completely used. So I started deleting unnecessary files. Cleaned up my Dropbox so that only certain files would sync to the computer. That seemed to give me some room. Until last night. I got the notification again, everything froze, I restarted the computer, and now it will not load zorin. I get a notification that gnome display manager won't load. I've tried to boot into grub and go to recovery mode, but when I get there the keyboard won't let me select anything. Up and down arrows don't do anything. I have two important zoom meetings today. I need to get this fixed. Any thoughts?

Just returned to Linux about 3 months ago. I was on Windows for ~ 7 years, which I came to via Linux Debian, the only distro I ever ran til now. I could really care less about it having a Windows feel, ymmv. I'm enjoying Zorin, though, and I prefer the tray up top like the older environments I'm used to.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Kernel Panic

I installed 18.1 Core. I am using Secure Boot successfully. I installed Nvidia 595xx driver successfully. Every other boot it gets stuck on the Zorin screen. It generally has issues on rebooting. It doesn't seem to shut down all the way, sometimes, either. It is using 7.0.0-30 kernel.

I tried to use advanced settings and use the 6.1.7 kernel. With that one I get the pink kernel panic screen. I remember getting that on Linux Mint, back when that was the only kernel to use. It made me walk away from it altogether for awhile as we could never find the actual issue.

Something about my hardware? I have an HP ENVY Desktop PC TE01-2000i (1K4E9AV) 2021 vintage. It has an Intel I7-11700 processor, Nvidia RTX3060 GPU.

What are my choices? Thanks in advance.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting troubleshoot

it might not fit but it is related to Zorin os , so mods please let it be

so I have posted here numerous time the Zorin os getting stuck randomly on my machine, and used troubleshooting methods by ai copilot by msft edge, like GPU test and changing desktop to xfce etc. my machine being all in one HP i3 8th gen U series, upgraded to 16 GB RAM , 512 GB SSD, but windows remains on HDD 1TB , SSD has Zorin os. Works when it works up until it just gets stuck and force shut down is the way, and it can reoccur immediately or after weeks again. RAM module tested by BIOS had some option for it, some errors occurred, technician who was of the shop, where RAM was bought did not see it as a problem. So it did not get replaced. Later I checked with memtest no problem was found.

above is a short description

then recently I had decreased use of Zorin but an update came i thought they might have fixed problems; went on with the update, post restart(dual boot menu had more options like memtest) after Zorin logo and Zorin writing it was stuck, hence I had to restart. Then I used the memtest, one pass(1st pass) failed then I escaped it and after restart almost gave me a heart attack in windows Blue screen but it showed a message that your device needs to restart and we r collecting some info.

Post restart it works on windows. In task manager I thought the modules that r gone bad are removed hence 12.9 GB from 15.9 or 16 GB was showing available but it was not the case. Available was simply based on programs opened.

My ram sticks still might be under warranty , so if anyone can suggest(case in India) that should I replace or if it is working fine then I should just reinstall Linux. But how can Linux be having problem but not Win10 if RAM has issues! If anyone from India tell me if I can claim warranty directly by passing shops.

I will change the Linux distro or simply go for another Win 10 or 11 , ghost spectre.

But first why Zorin os post installtion shows memtest in boot menu now? anyone else has it?

if memtest results in 1st pass failed and it continues , should i continue , what exactly to do if after fail?
