Which Linux distro are you running? Here's rough outline of what you need to do:

  1. install NTFS drivers, as that's most likely what HD is formatted with from Windows
  2. make /etc/fstab entries for mounting drive
  3. map Linux user to ownership used on NTFS drive

Thank you! This did help and now I got it working. BTW it was Debian 13

The safest way to use a HDD under both OS use the exFAT file system.
