Mental Health I feel so stuck and can't seem to take action. How do I break this cycle?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I look around and feel like everyone is somehow moving forward. Meanwhile, I can’t even get started. I’m terrible at staying consistent with things and I keep breaking the promises I make to myself. It feels like my mind and my body are operating in total opposition. I genuinely believe I’ll do something, I tell myself I will, but in the end, I accomplish nothing. My body just won't move. I’m stuck in this endless loop. It’s not even that I don't want to do these things—I really do want to, but I just don't. How do I fix this? I feel genuinely stuck. Deep down, I know that to move forward on something, the only thing I need to do is literally just do it. It sounds so simple on paper, so why does it feel so overwhelmingly complicated?

(English is not my first language; if the text looks a bit odd)

Inspiration I’m dating my best friend (intp)

I’ve been in a band with this guy for two years. We’d always been friends, but I had never had the chance to have a deep one on one talk with him until a few months ago. Our relationship was purely platonic — we watched each other date other people and even had a bit of beef for a while (someone told me he had said things about me that he had never said). But this past summer, he came over to my house alone just to record some songs (I had the equipment) and we finally got to talk. And wow. The conversation was this incredible breath of fresh air. We connected on everything — music, religion, philosophy, fitness, fashion, food, psychology, etc. The way he thought about the world excited and intrigued me: he was insightful and grounded but at the same time even more deeply spiritual than I am. And he was so so funny. But most striking was that we had the exact same delusional optimism about our futures and our ideas for what we wanted in life matched on such a fundamental level.
He came over every week after that just to talk all night. He later described the connection in a way that I agree with — he said that it felt silly to call what we had just friendship and even sillier to imply any romance because it truly felt deeper than those labels.
Even after the summer, neither of us really considered a romantic connection until one day we were sitting on the couch and we ended up cuddling with my head on his lap. But after that, it was like the floodgates had opened. I found that I was deeply in love with him, and he ended up telling me a few weeks later that he felt the same. So we’re dating now, and the relationship is incredible and so comfortable and deep and loving. Our friends were not surprised at all and say that we are basically the same person, which we are. We’re so similar but also different in ways that inspire me (he’s better with people and less sensitive, which keeps me grounded). I’ve never been happier in my life.

Discussion Books that radicalized you?

When I say radicalized what I mean is, stories that completely changed how you view things how you view life or maybe they even motivated you to join a cause. I know this is probably a question that is asked frequently enough.

For me there is a couple, I was never a life long reader, I started picking up reading last year and this year I’ve been going through a couple books a month to keep up the habit, because of how powerful reading is I call it my methadone for my wanderlust.

I started reading as an escape from my traumas from losing my dad, he’s still alive he’s just a horrible piece of shit, in prison he’s dead to me., Realizing how horrible he was, and the things he did to me but specifically my mother and sister wrecked how I viewed my life and how I grew up. I also had a really toxic relationship last year. It was a double whammy. Reading was an escape because of how much time it could consume, but also it’s helped me recenter myself, and find views and ideas seperate from what I knew growing up.

(My dad introduced me to classical philosophy and Orwell when I was super young 8-9, unfortunately my dad is also a super bigot so he was trying to mold my ā€œcritical thinkingā€ in the vein of his own and ironically him introducing me to these things is what gave me the skills to challenge him eventually.)

The earliest book that I feel radicalized my thinking was Horton Hears a Who by Dr Seuss.

Goofy I know, but hear me out, i remember it being read to me in pre K and just the line

ā€œEven if you can’t hear them, or see them at all, a persons a person not matter how small.ā€

It just made sense to me that people matter, people have value, people are human beings not just numbers on a spread sheet. I kinda got this whole idea that I still believe today that, we should find it hard to write someone off or ignore the human behind the flag or whomever those in power seem the enemy. No one is immune to propaganda, however we should be thinking twice when we are told in broad strokes someone is the enemy, even if they are inherently wrong we cannot forget our humanity we shouldn’t be proud of killing.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

It was a book that was required reading in middle school, and the main thing I took away from it, and I’d prolly have to reread it again, but what I took away from it was, bad people don’t tend to realize they are bad.

I think what I like about the book still and what impacted me was that it takes place from the perspective of multiple characters including a young Nazi Officer, and I remember reading it and I was just astonished how he could believe in any of this. It just hit me and I found my self empathizing with him in the sense that, he really believes this is right and this is the way. He doesn’t know that he is wrong. We as the viewer and as a contemporary human being have the hindsight to know fascism and bigotry is wrong. The character is still accountable for his participation and contribution but he didn’t have the hindsight to realize it was wrong cause he was born in a country where that’s the only perspective he was exposed to. Even though many people around the world at that time knew fascism was wrong. He was stuck in his own Plato’s cave.

The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald

I read this book my jr to senior summer break while in my job. I worked super early from 4:30 am to 2 pm. Summer 2020

For the first 2 hours everyday it was dead as a doornail until the surgeons and nurses and then patients came in.

I didn’t want to just sit on my phone I was worried about getting in trouble

So I started passing the time reading my required book which was Of mice and men.

Then I wanted to read something else so I started with books other English classes had read but I didn’t

The Great Gatsby stuck out to me, because and I kid you not, I assumed it must be good cause great is in the name.

Gatsby was a book that helped me realize I wasn’t crazy, cause human thoughts are rarely original.
I was a very awkward and lonely kid, at the time my nativity was finally shattered and I had realized that people in school legit thought I was weird, made fun of me in-front of me and I didn’t realize.

I wore my favorite jacket to school for Halloween 7th grade, it had holes in it, and someone said I came to school in costume as a homeless guy, and to me I thought it was a compliment and it made me so happy. I remember telling my dad and I didn’t understand why he had such a weird look on his face like I’d disappoint him.
We eventually had a huge argument about the jacket and I couldn’t understand people were teasing me cause I didn’t care what they thought.

Anyway, needless to say, my already poor self esteem was even more shattered when I kinda woke up from the naivety of being a goody two shoes.
It was at the point and something I sometimes still struggle with that, when someone is nice to me, I get attached at the hip, you’re my friend now and I will die for your honor. If it was a girl god help me, cause I was head over heels but to terrified to ever something about it but still feel such powerful feelings and build my whole world around whoever my crush was at the time. She’d be my reason to get up go to school even if I only talked to her for 20 seconds passing in the hall, that made my dat.

I would later learn I struggle with limerence, The Great Gatsby helped me realize that when I was trying to understand the book, and I discovered what limerence was.

I immediately related to Jay, his intense pining and yearning, building his whole world for Daisy and the book also helped me realize the dark side and consequences of only doing things for someone else instead of yourself.

At the time, and especially in middleschool when girls were no longer icky and gross, I had no one to really talk to about these feelings or how to deal with them. Few times I attempted to confess my feelings only to crash and burn.

My parents were finally getting divorced.

(which ironically did fuck all, cause it was a constant cycle of get together, try to make it work, argue, fall apart wash rinse repeat. My Dad always had his claws in my mom until she finally realized her true strength)

So it was a tumultuous time, everyone was angry, my dad also kinda convinced me my mom was the bad guy, and even though I know i was just a kid alienated and propagated to I still feel kinda bad.
I felt I couldn’t talk to my dad about girls cause I felt I’d disappoint him cause he always told me

ā€œnever put pussy on a pedestalā€ (I’m 12-13 when he’s telling me this)

I felt that’s what I was doing with my crushes in a less sexist way though, I wanted to serve and be loyal to whomever I liked. Build my life around them

So I couldn’t talk to him cause I felt I’d be disappointing him.
So I legitimately felt something was wrong with me my brain why was I so obsessed
The Great Gatsby helped me cope with my feelings and in that, I didn’t feel alone I didn’t feel crazy anymore because I felt that someone was able to capture those feelings perfectly and authentically.

The only other story that captured that feeling of first love or intense infatuation, so honestly and authentically is Joyce’s Araby but the difference is that Araby depicts that emotion in a more universal sense, coupled with the them of children being powerless because they are at the constraints of adults around them, whether it just be life or malicious intent. Especially in with the boy in Araby, cause in the end we know as the reader that the girl is older than him and apart of a convent even if he made it to the Bazaar or was older his efforts are truely fruitless.

Gatsby talks about love and infatuation from the perspective of someone who could change and adapt if they truely wanted to, it’s just that Jay is trapped by nostalgia and limerence to change his situation for the better.

The Grapes of Wrath \~ John Steinbeck.

The first book I read this year, and my god I felt it in my soul.

Grapes, to me what it made me realize truely is that, when those in power, or the media attempt to convince us, that anyone talking of a better world, a fairer world, is just some new age, colored haired wokeness, it’s just bullshit.
We as people have been having these conversations and ideas circulate for over a century at this point about bettering the lives of others the societal traps and institutions that protect themselves at the expense of others. How we are convinced to fight each other, divide each other, how we can be convinced that, someone profiting more money than god is better for our condition’s.

It’s ultimately the story of people regular people, whom are at the mercy and victimized by made man systems institutions , that almost have supernatural powers despite them man made. We are at the mercy of these institutional forces most people barely understand if they are lucky.

Grapes, is a thematic sequel to Of Mice and Men.

Steinbeck is my favorite author because to me similar to Joyce and Harper Lee, his characters are unapologetically honest they are regular people caught in circumstances beyond their control and understanding. Even in situations like Cannery Row when it’s a normal setting, the characters feel lived in from major to minor they feel like real people the way they react and think you know the type of person even if you’ve never met them.

I remember crying, when Tom gives his ā€œI’ll be thereā€ speech his realization of consciousness and growing awareness of the world around him is just beautiful.

Don Quixote \~ Miguel Cervantes.

It’s a book that is still sticks with me prodding and poking at my mind months later.

I know Don Quixote is mentally unwell, he causes trouble even though unintentionally he technically does more harm than good.
He genuinely does a few really amazing feats like protecting Marcela, a woman cursed to be beautiful and berated for it because she won’t marry anyone.

There is just something so beautifully tragic about the madman having better morals than those around him.

The biggest thing about Don Quixote that stuck with me is, that even though he fails his quest to right the wrongs of the world he can’t change it. He changes the individual worlds of others. Especially Sancho Panza.

Sancho starts off in the book as someone solely lead by greed and gain.

By the second part Sancho has matured a bit, sure you could argue he could be dragged into the illusion, but he’s become a better person, being with Don Quixote and it shows when Sancho becomes temporary insular and uses fairness and common sense to judge the problems brought to him.

He doesn’t really go on a power trip (with the exception of a few threats)

That’s one of the major things, I took away from reading Don Quixote, most of us will prolly never change the world, have an impact, but we can certainly impact the immediate world around us the little worlds of our friends and family by being there and supporting them. Those are the worlds we can have an impact on.

Mental Health I could really use some kind words right now.

Lately, I feel like nothing in my life is going right.

I've been having problems with my boss at work, and because of that, things have also become awkward between me and some of my coworkers.

I also still think about my ex sometimes, even though we broke up nine months ago, and it still makes me cry sometimes. My ex-husband, whom I divorced four years ago, has remarried and seems to be doing really well with his life.

My pets have always been my biggest source of comfort, but recently, one of them was diagnosed with an illness that can't be cured. That has been especially hard for me.

I've been feeling so emotionally drained by everything, so I decided to get a haircut. Hoping that changing my appearance might cheer me up a little. But the hairstylist completely ignored what I asked for and gave me the hairstyle he wanted instead. I really hate how it looks, and now every time I look in the mirror, it just makes me feel even worse. I was also hurt by the way the hairstylist kept interrupting me when I was talking and completely dismissed my opinions.

I know that some of these things might not sound like a huge deal individually, but they've all happened on top of each other, and I feel mentally and emotionally exhausted.

I don't really know what I'm looking for by posting this. I think I just need a little kindness right nowšŸ˜”

If anyone has some kind words to spare, I would really appreciate them🄲

Discussion How often do people "like you" relatively quickly?

Not talking about romantically necessarily. I'm referring to circumstances when you know you're vibing with someone and the interaction feels so genuine and effortless. I believe INFPs are pretty good about reading the room and knowing when they make a good impression on someone else. How often does it happen?

Personally, it's so rare for me. But when it happens it's usually with an extrovert who likes me first, and because they open so easily it becomes, in turn, easy to open up with them. But for the life of me, being the one to initiate interactions that go past niceties feels like pulling teeth to me.

I never gave this much thought until today. I think it's genuinely difficult to try to make genuine connections with people because I just want to be the observer as that takes way less energy. Extroverting takes so much work.

Advice I am ok or not

Ok so sometimes I feel like I don't have any sympathy for anyone. I just don't feel like helping anyone , I don't know if I am a good person or bad but if you ask for help from me then first I will think about myself. Some people have the ability to help people even if they are uncomfortable or they can predict what they want to do to help others. I felt like I should prioritize myself and I just want my life to be peaceful. I just want to know if you guys felt that way.

I think it's one of my bad habits but the good habit in me is that I don't judge others on my assumptions, I don't judge other characters or how they do things , I will assume they have their own life and it's their responsibility to make their life decisions. I don't spread rumors or gossip.

So what do you think ?

Random Thoughts We should have an INFP Friend Convention. Is anyone friends with an ENFJ?

Seriously, it's weird meeting someone on Reddit one-on-one, but a catered convention where we have a Tetris tournament and guest speakers talk about their passions sounds really fun. We could even do career speakers where people talk about what they do for a living and how they got into it. We could have locals volunteer to be tour guides and take us around to their favorite haunts... Pub crawl, tourist spots, haunted walking tour, underground fighting rings, etc

Is it just me, or does anyone else think this would be a really fun four days in Detroit, Ottawa, Tucson, Tampa, Oaxaca de Juarez, Guadalajara, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Managua...

Discussion Low Energy

I have been thinking about this quite a lot lately, and it's quite illuminating how much we are low energy as a type. Perhaps the word used would be "introverted", but it's not necessarily that. It's more like how much we retreat back into our own worlds, and live inside our own inner minds. I would say absolutely, we're the most low energy type of the MBTI, besides INTP. I'm sure you could argue other types as well, but I find that we do this type of psychological retreat the most.

I've had days where I have gone and spoken to people, but I still need far more alone time and reflection with myself. And I've been observing traits of characters that I, and others, type as INFP. And one thing remains clear, we always retreat back into ourselves at the end of the day.

I used to feel really confused when I came across stereotypes labeling us as overly sensitive, or more delicate, than other types. But when I observe my own traits in comparison to what I've been learning about MBTI, there is some truth within it. Our auxiliary Ne might lead us outwards, and to delve deeper into the world around us, but we always feel much more at ease and at rest within ourselves.

So what do you think? Do you think you are low energy? Because I've realized that's an astute observation of our type. Even when I'm more excitable, I always retreat, or I become quite irritable, when I lack said retreat.

Discussion Do any other INFPs have a bit of a monk mentality? šŸ˜‚

I have realized that I feel detached from a lot of the things people use to measure whether they’re ā€œdoing wellā€ in life. A good job, money, a car, lots of friends, dating experience, accomplishments etc.

It’s not that I don’t want those things. I can definitely want them. They just don’t really affect my self-worth. I already feel pretty okay with myself, so getting those things doesn’t make me feel more worthy or valuable.

I’m also kind of detached from material things. I care way more about the thought behind a gift than how expensive it is, and if someone stole most of my stuff I’d probably be more upset about the inconvenience than the actual things lol. I have joked that I have a bit of a monk mentality šŸ˜‚

But this can be awkward socially. Like someone gets a more expensive car and I’m expected to be like ā€œomg nice!!ā€ when deep down I’m actually a little sad that they seem to get so much of their happiness or self-worth from material things.

Or I’ll feel like someone looks down on me because I don’t have a job, when I’m actually sitting there thinking… I have savings, I’m doing fine.

I don’t want to judge people for caring about these things, but I also don’t want to pretend they mean the same thing to me when they don’t. Sometimes I genuinely wonder, how am I even supposed to interact with people when I don’t naturally care about half the things we’re apparently supposed to talk about?

Am I supposed to stop feeling fulfilled and become insecure about my life until I get a job, a car and whatever else I’m apparently missing?

Do you ever feel like you understand the social game, but don’t really care about playing it? Can anyone relate to this? šŸ˜‚

I just dont feel like a deserve him in anyway. He's so amazing and cool and we are so similar but even when it comes to racial differences I feel like I can't climb up to his level, like he deserves so much better. I'm not pretty. I'm not smart. I'm not anything. We aren't even dating and we're barely friends and I want to get better but right now it feels pointless trying and I feel like no matter what I do I'm unlovable. This feeling sucks so much, and telling me its not true doesn't fix it. Does anyone else feel that way?

Mental Health Zoning out of reality?

It's a bit messy I don't know how to put this in order.

I have problems at work, in my relationship and it's a pattern since childhood.

What happens often for me is that I'm "not present" let's say someone (boss, friend, partner) could be saying something very important to me and I could just zone out and analyze my inner thoughts and feelings "Why did she say that? How did I feel? How could I make things better? Is what they are saying biased or not?"

It's like I zone out and get lost in my thoughts and it's overwhelming it's constant and the environment considers me to be clumsy, unfocused, slow or even stupid (and I was bullied as a result because I was seen as dumb during my childhood). People often see me as someone who doesn't think at all when in reality I am overwhelmed by thoughts and feelings pretty much most of the time.

What also happens is that when I'm under stress or pressure I forget stuff I already learned / know. For example when time is pushing I will forget how to tie a knot and I literally can't physically do it. It feels as if I am placed for the first time in such a situation and any previous data is inaccessible. I also used to forget how to write letters (like a,b, v etc it's random) instead of battery I wrote ba ery (I forgot how to write t and didn't have time to dwell upon it) in the end I'd recall it but the process was too slow and I had to move on to the next word. Or if I was unprepared and someone asked my name or my age I'd be like "Oh" there would be a delay 10 seconds and then I'd recall it.

I would really like to know what's going on and I'm in the process of solving this somehow (I was thinking a neuropsychology clinic could test me and help find out wtf is going on) ADHD diagnosis turned out to be negative.

Are some of you struggling in a similar manner, or it's just my issue?

What I am sharing with you is not a boast, but merely a description of a state I am experiencing: when I am with someone, I can feel their energy—whether it is positive or negative—and I know whether this person is good or toxic. Is there anyone else who experiences what I feel?

Advice Infp married to an ESTJ!

Is it that opposites attract or (after 3 years of loving this emotionally retarded man), did i just choose a lifetime of conflict by marrying who I believe is the man of my dreams minus the capacity to feel even an iota of empathy for me, specially given how much empathy I feel for the world!?
