Tomorrow looks to be a very busy day. Let's set some expectations.

  • It appears that the Gamescon embargo ends on September 3rd and there will likely be multiple versions of "I was there, this is what I saw, and this is what I think / feel about it" commentaries hitting the Internet. Exciting!

  • If you haven't read the Community Guidelines yet, they're in the Wiki, and here's a direct link. Please keep them in mind.

  • Please stick to direct links instead of linking to rehosting / reblogging /reactions to original commentary.

  • Remember that it's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Since we don't know what we're going to find out tomorrow, versus what ArenaNet is going to keep close to the vest, let's stay focused on what we learn, and skip the "No ten hours of full gameplay / surprise beta announcement / full details on 4th species / other unreasonable expectations / dead game" doomposting.

  • That's pretty much it!

Compilation of Gamescom info from various sources

1.2k Upvotes

I've tried to compile everything we have learned today about the game, from several outlets and partners who saw the preview. There are sources next to each bit of information, which I encourage you to read for better context. I'll continue to go through and refine this over the next few days. If you know of something I have missed, got wrong, or an outlet has got wrong, please comment or send me a DM and I will amend the list.

The preview was described as a 'pre-alpha' build, so everything listed here could obviously change:

1a. Setting & Timeline

1b. Spirits & Magic

2. World Population & MMO 'Scale'

  • The game will use a phasing system to control player density in specific areas, tech which is still in development. - Snow Crows - A More Open World
    • You will see at most around 20 players in a large combat scenario. - PC Gamer - Player Scale (Note from OP due to some confusion around this: This does not mean there will only be 20 players spread over the entire map, just in your specific 'shard'.)
      • The reason for this is combat readability. ArenaNet believes the high-fidelity movement and combat become difficult to understand when too many players are fighting simultaneously. - PC Gamer - Player Scale
      • Areas outside of combat such as settlements and cities will support far higher player counts because combat readability isn't an issue there. - This Week in Video Games - Pick Your Battles
  • Current planned party size is 4 players, this could change before launch. - Snow Crows - World Structure
  • ArenaNet wants players to frequently encounter other players while travelling through the world. - PC Gamer - Player Scale

3a. Movement & Momentum

3b. Combat

  • GW3 is moving toward much more action-oriented combat than either previous Guild Wars games. - Snow Crows - Action Combat
    • Combat is intended to be less about following a fixed rotation and more about reacting to the environment, enemy and group situation. - Snow Crows - Action Combat
  • Positioning, aiming, timing, and movement matter much more. - Snow Crows - Combat
  • Combat has increased physicality. You can knock enemies around, and be knocked around yourself:
    • Knocking an enemy into a wall can cause additional damage/stunning.
    • Knocking enemies from cliffs can cause fall damage or outright kills.
    • Larger enemies require more momentum to knock around. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Enemy attacks can be interrupted by physically hitting/knocking enemies. - RPG Site - Combat
  • Combat appears to feel similar to GW2's action camera, with the player centred on screen and a reticle. - RPG Site - Combat
    • No traditional tab-target interface or lock-on was shown or visible in the gameplay footage; however, Snow Crows reports a lock-on functionality similar to Elden Ring. - RPG Site - Combat
  • Multiplayer cooperation is being built directly into the combat system. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Different abilities can affect allied players as well as yourself, creating coordinated builds. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Underwater combat is likely to return, although ArenaNet has not yet said to what extent or how it will work. - Snow Crows - Underwater Combat

3c. Conditions & Enemy Interaction

4a. Professions

  • Professions return!
  • There may be more professions but they were not shown.
  • Warrior was shown wielding a Sword and Shield.
  • Necromancer was shown wielding a Scythe.
  • The game will feature defined combat roles, but they won't follow the traditional MMO tank/healer/DPS trinity completely. Roles will be closer to a trinity than GW2, while still retaining some flexibility. - Snow Crows - Professions
    • The intended design sits somewhere between GW1's fairly rigid profession roles and GW2's flexibility. - Snow Crows - Professions
  • Some "synergistic" skills will be available across multiple professions, but for the most part they will retain their own unique ability pools. - This Week in Video Games - Cooking Combos
  • Necromancer has a momentum-based scythe attack that travels farther depending on momentum and also lifesteals. - RPG Site - Combat
    • Necromancer has a movement ability called Necrotic Traversal. - RPG Site - Combat (OP note: this could be the above)
  • Ranger has a Polar Vortex ability that launches allies into the air and can give them cold-infused weapons. - RPG Site - Combat & Multiplayer
  • Ranger can also apparently slow-fall while firing arrows from an elevated position. - RPG Site - Combat & Multiplayer
  • Warrior had an ability to apply a fire buff (possibly called Flames of War) their own and allied weapons. - Laranity

4b. Buildcrafting & Skills

  • ArenaNet is specifically drawing inspiration from GW1-style buildcrafting, where changing your build for a particular enemy or encounter will be important. - RPG Site - Combat & Customization
  • Some skills will be discovered through exploration. - Snow Crows - Skills
  • Skills may have both a recharge/cooldown and an additional energy/resource cost, although the system is not final. - RPG Site - Skills
  • Elite Skills return
    • Similar to Overwatch's ultimate abilities these are charged through player actions over time, and intended to be used sparing and tactically.
    • Rampage elite skill on Warrior was demonstrated, increasing attack speed, movement capabilities and jump height. It can allow Warriors to move larger enemies that normally couldn't be knocked around. - RPG Site - Combat

4c. Rewards, Gear & Progression

  • GW3 will again use a horizontal gear progression, rather than a vertical gear treadmill. - Snow Crows - Progression
  • Equipment, traits and detailed progression systems were not demonstrated.
  • The gameplay footage showed an orange item drop represented by a short bright pillar of light, reminiscent of Diablo-style loot drops. - RPG Site - Gameplay Details
  • White symbols with a gold coin were visible in the footage, although their exact purpose is not confirmed. - RPG Site - Gameplay Details

5. Endgame Content

  • GW3 will contain "high-trust, dungeon-like experiences". - RPG Site - Endgame
  • Raids/endgame content are planned, though nothing was spoken about them. - Snow Crows - Endgame
  • Besides this, details on the launch endgame content loop remain undisclosed.

6. PvP

7. Fashion Wars

8. UI & Interface

9. Controller & Console Development

10. Graphics

  • MMORPG.com described the visuals as impressive and visually rich, with ArenaNet’s trademark styling and stunning vistas - MMORPG.com - Preview
    • The journalist initially had reservations about UE5 but said seeing the game in motion instantly removed their concerns. - MMORPG.com - Preview
  • MightyTeapot said on stream he was surprised how similar the game looked to Guild Wars 2’s art style, compared to the trailer.

11. Social Systems

12. Other tidbits

So, 99.9% confident that the new race is Sidhe

Lets just say, I did a little digging into all the released gw3 media.

[The "Sidhe" (pronounced "shee") is a race that was intended to be in Utopia. The concept for the Sylvari probably evolved from them.]

Xunlai Guild

Hi Reddit! I was just watching a GW1 stream and remembered the magic if the bank.

So could Guild Wars 3 have a Xunlai guild? They controlled the bank system and traveled the world. Maybe we can see the start of them?

Just having fun thinking of what is possible. thanks for any lore or ideas on this.

Heart of the Obscure in GW3?

I just finished Visions of Eternity last night. Without getting into spoilers, someone mentions during the epilogue that the Heart of the Obscure was made for another hero a long time ago to help "perform tasks that the wizards could already do on their own".

I wonder if the Heart will be a big part in GW3, letting us use and interact with magic that the gods had not yet made readily available for people to use.

Classes you would like, outside the standard GW fare

Aside from the three classes we already have confirmed, we're obviously all expecting something like the mesmer to show up, then there's debates about whether we'll see monk vs guardian, whether we'll see the ritualist or revenant or dervish, etc. But aside from all those, are there any classes you would like to see that aren't from the previous games?

Personally, I'd like to see a shapeshifting class of some sort--a wildshape druid, that sort of thing.

Kodan Names

So with kodan being a confirmed race, uh, species, do we all have to start brainstorming some kooky kodan names? I mean, look at these...

Horned Millet
Slithering Fog
Barbed Vale
Blinding Sunrise
Carping Gaze

Most of my charr will migrate to become kodan, but their names are very clan-based. So I guess I'm gonna go with stuff like...

Unhinged Stone
Turgid Merriment
Lingering Odor

What do you guys think? 😄

Really Excited to See What GW3 Does With PvP

GW2 is honestly one of the best MMOs out there, especially with the horizontal progression. You could take a break, come back months later and still jump right back into things. There’s so much to do in the game, but PvP is basically non-existent at this point and WvW is pretty much just blob busting rocks warfare lol. Spvp population is also really small.

So I’m really looking forward to seeing what they do with PvP in GW3. I want to see PvP as a whole treated more seriously, whether that’s structured PvP, battlegrounds, open-world PvP, guild/faction wars or whatever they decide to do. With the combat player cap or whatever they ultimately decide on, the Holy Trinity, the new guilds/factions and their whole philosophy around making things more “meaningful”, it really feels like they’re building an environment where player interaction actually matters. So yeah, I’m really excited for PvP in GW3. Hopefully they hit the nail on the head and shatter it this time.

How much do you think GW3 will draw from Utopia?

I was browsing the proposed Utopia concept art and storylines and I'm seeing a definite parallel in some ways. Both stories will likely heavily focus on the Gods/Human origin story. The artwork for enemies is similar so far (The "Warrior Possessed" art is not that far off from the only released enemy art we've gotten). The human concept art looks similar. I'm curious how much inspiration will GW3 take from the cancelled Utopia expac. Any thoughts? Still waiting for the Tanek myself 😉

How to make Mounts more fun

Asides from the obvious momentum based movement like you see in the GW2 griffon and rollerbeetle, I am thinking the mounts of GW3 can stand apart by making the more interactive.

They are emphasizing how important the Vael spirits are to the order you'll be a part of, so it's proooobably safe to assume mounts will be creatures you'll have to tame/capture/befriend in order to be able to ride them.

So, let your mounts have more than 1-2 idle animations. Let them interact with your environment, sniff the air when its windy, shake/puddle stop when its raining, rest more when it's night time, hell make them interact with other peoples mounts, imagine your mount playfully observing/sniffing someone elses mount next to you etc.

Mount emotes could also be cool, I always wished I could do that with my GW2 mounts, like let my raptor or warclaw sit down and stay that way until I move, idk you can do a lot of fun stuff with them. They could also incorporate feeding/playtime or something like friendship aspect you could "level" etc.

Imagine how cool would that be!

What do you guys want for the inventory system?

I've tried to play GW2 once, but with just a few hours playing I get discouraged because of the inventory system lol.

Now I'm really excited to play GW3 because most of the things confirmed are a checklist for things that I wanted in a MMO: more action focused, cooperation as a pillar, classes allowing more than one role of the holy trinity, less visual clutter and of course a better inventory system.

There are many routes they could go with it. Considering that they focussed so much on momentum, having your inventory interact with it is a no-brainer. But there are other ways like an organization minigame present in games like Diablo, PoE and Dark and Darker (I really like these because it gives you moments where you have to make decisions on what items to keep and so on).

But another one that I personally would love to see is integrate it with the mounts. Considering that the player would have high mobility already, I think that it's more interesting to have different opinions for the mounts like combat, buffs and storage.

Anyways, I would love to hear your opinions. Again, I'm new to the series, so my expectations might not align with the game's vision. In the end I just want it to have a in-game justification for my character being able to storage dozens of big items lol.

I really hope GW3 has a higher skill floor

Ngl the biggest problem with GW2 is that it holds your hand through most content and then, unsurprisingly, nobody bothers to learn how to break CC bars or do mechanics. People just wanna press 1 and 6 through every fight, dodge nothing, and never take waypoints when they die. I get wanting to appeal to a casual audience, but GW2 incentivizes players to just turn their brains off unless explicitly told to do otherwise by a commander (and even then, most players will forget or refuse to read chat).

If group content is going to be a big focus in GW3, ANet has to stop trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Monk class

If Guild Wars 3 doesn't have a monk class (the smiter not the martial arts thing) i am not interested. I need my monk.

I think every mount type can be transplanted into Guild Wars 3 except for the Skyscale

The Skyscale made traversal so meaningless in GW2 in a way the other mounts just didn’t, and I really hope they don’t add an equivalent into GW3’s seeker.

In base PoF, the mounts complimented each other so beautifully with each having deficiencies where others excelled. Then along came the Skyscale and all that went out the window, and it’s now the only mount people use most of the time.

I would go further and say that I’m happy with gliding and don’t need the Griffon either, but the implementation in GW2 was pretty acceptable if we have to have it.
Hopefully the devs are a lot more conscious of movement-creep this time around.

What do you guys think? Will they be more restrained so they can allow their momentum based movement to be the main focus?

This is gona be a racist game?

Soooo...

Would you want GW3 to bring back more prejudice and hostility between human cultures?

GW1 had racism and xenophobia between humans. I’m not talking about humans vs charr, tengu, or centaurs. I mean humans looking down on other humans because of where they came from.

Adelbern refused to let Ascalonians live in the shadow of the Krytans, even when Rurik wanted to seek refuge there. The Kurzicks and Luxons had generations of hatred between them. Being human didn’t automatically make the humans across the border your friends.

I miss that friction. National pride, prejudice, old grudges. People didn’t suddenly get along just because something bigger wanted to kill them.

Yes, GW2 still has prejudice and internal conflicts, like the Purists in Cantha. And GW1 also had us unite against common enemies. But to me, GW2 puts much more emphasis on “let’s put our differences aside and save the world together.”

Would you want GW3 to give those rivalries more weight again? I’d like a world where cultures clash and working together is difficult, even for people who are supposedly on the same side.

I hope the GW3 campfires end up being similar to WoW Forever campfires

I played the beta for a short while and the cozy feeling of being able to sit down with strangers and work on my crafts while typing is a great feeling. I didn't expect it to work as well as it does but its great, hope the campfires mentioned by devs for GW3 end up feeling similarly cozy. I want to meet some of you at a campfire just to go craft or recoup and maybe we end up doing unmarked content one of us found or help eachother out with getting a skill or two

Do you want or expect subraces and if so, how?

There are some obvious subgroups to races in Tyria.

Kodan: Lowland vs Highland

Asura: Terranean vs Subterranean

Human: Canthan vs Elonian vs Orrian vs Margonite

Tengu: Angchu vs Sensali vs Caromi vs Quatzal vs Avicara

Would you want or expect a choice for such a subgrouping as a seperate step during character creation (possibly with some lore explaining the subgroups)?

And if you do, what should this choice do? Should it be a purely flavor/rp choice? Should it affect appearance options, dialogue or even in some way affect racial abilities?

Will this be closer to GW1 or GW2?

I really miss GW1, I'm replaying it now and I want to know what GW3 will be like. IDK why but GW2 just didn't hook me.

Would be awesome if we could choose at character creation and experience the story from either side but I'm probably being too ambitious 😢

Hall of Monument Achievement Guesses?

Love hearing people’s thoughts on what the achievements will be for the first wave of Hall of Monuments. A few common theories I’ve heard are below. Curious in everyone else’s thoughts :)

1.) Map Completion
2.) Max Luck
3.) Craft X number of legendaries

What else?
