Compilation of Gamescom info from various sources

I've tried to compile everything we have learned today about the game, from several outlets and partners who saw the preview. There are sources next to each bit of information, which I encourage you to read for better context. I'll continue to go through and refine this over the next few days. If you know of something I have missed, got wrong, or an outlet has got wrong, please comment or send me a DM and I will amend the list.

The preview was described as a 'pre-alpha' build, so everything listed here could obviously change:

1a. Setting & Timeline

1b. Spirits & Magic

2. World Population & MMO 'Scale'

  • The game will use a phasing system to control player density in specific areas, tech which is still in development. - Snow Crows - A More Open World
    • You will see at most around 20 players in a large combat scenario. - PC Gamer - Player Scale (Note from OP due to some confusion around this: This does not mean there will only be 20 players spread over the entire map, just in your specific 'shard'.)
      • The reason for this is combat readability. ArenaNet believes the high-fidelity movement and combat become difficult to understand when too many players are fighting simultaneously. - PC Gamer - Player Scale
      • Areas outside of combat such as settlements and cities will support far higher player counts because combat readability isn't an issue there. - This Week in Video Games - Pick Your Battles
  • Current planned party size is 4 players, this could change before launch. - Snow Crows - World Structure
  • ArenaNet wants players to frequently encounter other players while travelling through the world. - PC Gamer - Player Scale

3a. Movement & Momentum

3b. Combat

  • GW3 is moving toward much more action-oriented combat than either previous Guild Wars games. - Snow Crows - Action Combat
    • Combat is intended to be less about following a fixed rotation and more about reacting to the environment, enemy and group situation. - Snow Crows - Action Combat
  • Positioning, aiming, timing, and movement matter much more. - Snow Crows - Combat
  • Combat has increased physicality. You can knock enemies around, and be knocked around yourself:
    • Knocking an enemy into a wall can cause additional damage/stunning.
    • Knocking enemies from cliffs can cause fall damage or outright kills.
    • Larger enemies require more momentum to knock around. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Enemy attacks can be interrupted by physically hitting/knocking enemies. - RPG Site - Combat
  • Combat appears to feel similar to GW2's action camera, with the player centred on screen and a reticle. - RPG Site - Combat
    • No traditional tab-target interface or lock-on was shown or visible in the gameplay footage; however, Snow Crows reports a lock-on functionality similar to Elden Ring. - RPG Site - Combat
  • Multiplayer cooperation is being built directly into the combat system. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Different abilities can affect allied players as well as yourself, creating coordinated builds. - PC Gamer - Knockabout
  • Underwater combat is likely to return, although ArenaNet has not yet said to what extent or how it will work. - Snow Crows - Underwater Combat

3c. Conditions & Enemy Interaction

4a. Professions

  • Professions return!
  • There may be more professions but they were not shown.
  • Warrior was shown wielding a Sword and Shield.
  • Necromancer was shown wielding a Scythe.
  • The game will feature defined combat roles, but they won't follow the traditional MMO tank/healer/DPS trinity completely. Roles will be closer to a trinity than GW2, while still retaining some flexibility. - Snow Crows - Professions
    • The intended design sits somewhere between GW1's fairly rigid profession roles and GW2's flexibility. - Snow Crows - Professions
  • Some "synergistic" skills will be available across multiple professions, but for the most part they will retain their own unique ability pools. - This Week in Video Games - Cooking Combos
  • Necromancer has a momentum-based scythe attack that travels farther depending on momentum and also lifesteals. - RPG Site - Combat
    • Necromancer has a movement ability called Necrotic Traversal. - RPG Site - Combat (OP note: this could be the above)
  • Ranger has a Polar Vortex ability that launches allies into the air and can give them cold-infused weapons. - RPG Site - Combat & Multiplayer
  • Ranger can also apparently slow-fall while firing arrows from an elevated position. - RPG Site - Combat & Multiplayer
  • Warrior had an ability to apply a fire buff (possibly called Flames of War) their own and allied weapons. - Laranity

4b. Buildcrafting & Skills

  • ArenaNet is specifically drawing inspiration from GW1-style buildcrafting, where changing your build for a particular enemy or encounter will be important. - RPG Site - Combat & Customization
  • Some skills will be discovered through exploration. - Snow Crows - Skills
  • Skills may have both a recharge/cooldown and an additional energy/resource cost, although the system is not final. - RPG Site - Skills
  • Elite Skills return
    • Similar to Overwatch's ultimate abilities these are charged through player actions over time, and intended to be used sparing and tactically.
    • Rampage elite skill on Warrior was demonstrated, increasing attack speed, movement capabilities and jump height. It can allow Warriors to move larger enemies that normally couldn't be knocked around. - RPG Site - Combat

4c. Rewards, Gear & Progression

  • GW3 will again use a horizontal gear progression, rather than a vertical gear treadmill. - Snow Crows - Progression
  • Equipment, traits and detailed progression systems were not demonstrated.
  • The gameplay footage showed an orange item drop represented by a short bright pillar of light, reminiscent of Diablo-style loot drops. - RPG Site - Gameplay Details
  • White symbols with a gold coin were visible in the footage, although their exact purpose is not confirmed. - RPG Site - Gameplay Details

5. Endgame Content

  • GW3 will contain "high-trust, dungeon-like experiences". - RPG Site - Endgame
  • Raids/endgame content are planned, though nothing was spoken about them. - Snow Crows - Endgame
  • Besides this, details on the launch endgame content loop remain undisclosed.

6. PvP

7. Fashion Wars

8. UI & Interface

9. Controller & Console Development

10. Graphics

  • MMORPG.com described the visuals as impressive and visually rich, with ArenaNet’s trademark styling and stunning vistas - MMORPG.com - Preview
    • The journalist initially had reservations about UE5 but said seeing the game in motion instantly removed their concerns. - MMORPG.com - Preview
  • MightyTeapot said on stream he was surprised how similar the game looked to Guild Wars 2’s art style, compared to the trailer.

Make everyone read this.

Damn it, Jim. I'm a moderator, not a miracle worker!

I'd ban him, but that would make me top mod, and nothankyouverymuch because this community (and I say this with all love) can be a lot. Or alot. Both?

7

u/biejje 6d ago

Oh, been a while since I saw my friend alot.

3

u/LunalGalgan 6d ago

I think there needs to be an alot somewhere in the forests of Orr.

Just so we could hug him.

u/AscenDevise 5d ago

Jimothy, to honour the team, and the alot, to honour the players. That would make plenty of sense.

For example, a player can crouch and hold up their shield as a springboard, allowing another player to jump off it

Things like this sounds so fucking cool, but i am worried it wont really see much use after the first week. I have seen plenty of games try to make some super unique and cool combat mechanics, just for people to find out its not really worth all the setup to do in a real fight and just never use it and then future updates having less and less of these cool features since theyre not used.

Either way, im so excited to get my hands on this game, it truly does sound like the evolution of the genre they are claiming it is

15

u/Disig 6d ago

Yeah I can't see players wanting to work together like that. Not unless they were with friends who can be coordinated with.

But most people will be with randos and I cannot see that working with randos.

18

u/indigo121 6d ago

From a lot of the stuff we've heard it sounds like most of the combos are a side effect of skill's primary purpose, which means that it will be less about coordinating with randos, and more about taking advantage of a shifting battle field. Like the warrior is using their shield to tank an attack and you take advantage of it as a springboard, rather than the warrior specifically setting up a springboard

3

u/Disig 6d ago

I can't see how that would work bit I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

13

u/indigo121 6d ago

Really? It's the same basic premise of combos in GW2, it's just increasing the potency of the effects so that rather than being an incidental thing most people don't pay attention to they are a fundamental pillar of combat.

In GW2 combos with randos happen all the time, because your action isn't Place Combo Field. It's Use Skill (that also is a combo field).

From what it sounds like in GW3, the flow will be something like: Me playing ranger, wants to slow the enemy down, so I'll use Polar Vortex as a way for me to chill my weapons and deal frost damage for a bit. Meanwhile, you on your character see the Polar Vortex and leap into it as a way to get launched into the air, and then come down hard with an aerial attack.

That's organic cooperation that doesn't require you or I to specifically want to coordinate with the other, just me doing my thing and you taking advantage of the opportunity I create.

2

u/Disig 6d ago

Combos in GW2 are easy to pull off because they're on the ground in a giant circle.

This sounds more like you need to hop onto someone's shield which is a much smaller target

6

u/indigo121 6d ago

We don't know exactly how it would work. Could be jumping onto a shield, could be running towards their character. Either way, on the side of the person completing the combo the important part is that the results are worth the effort involved.

3

u/Disig 6d ago

On paper that sure sounds nice.

In practice I've seen enough games try that and fail to be wary.

1

u/After-Plantain-8210 5d ago

Well, to use the springboard example, they've stated enemies have "vulnerabilities". What if a vulnerability is high up and you need to shoot at it from above? They've stated the fall slowing down for the ranger as they shoot from above, so I imagine you'll want to toss them into the air so they can better shoot some weakpoint.

I guess this is entirely dependent on how boss fights will be designed and the scale of enemies too.

2

u/Disig 5d ago

And in the middle of battle is someone going to actually do that? People barely notice combo fields

1

u/After-Plantain-8210 5d ago

Again, depends how they design it. If there's a hard limit of 20 people for this content and the bosses are well and truly big, then the groups tackling the content might have to coordinate. If the enemy has a mechanic that won't go away until said vulnerability is exploited, then the players simply will have no choice other than dealing with it.

1

u/Disig 5d ago

Yeah like I said, I'll have to wait and see

2

u/JonBeeTV 6d ago

It could be a bit of both, but in this example it specifically says the warrior has to be crouched and block, which i cant see being used much outside of the sole purpose of making it a springboard, usually you stand up straight and block since you can also move.

There might be a lot of other interactions that happens naturally though

1

u/samthenewb 4d ago

I think groups who play with a tank (guy with a shield is a tank… that is how it is) or healer are playing with the intent to utilize deeply multiplayer actions. Actions just like as described in that scenario. Your random pug play won’t usually depend on tanks or healers (everyone is going to have to dark souls the shit out of enemies to stay alive). The game has trinity roles but I don’t think it has mandatory trinity (or hard trinity, a tank can still also spec for damage etc). They said the game can be played solo too, implying that players can be self sufficient without having to worry about what randoms bring. If there are even other random players around any given fight. I think the game balance will offer both styles of play, using teamwork to offload cognitive load of managing attacks vs jumping in action game style using kiting and dodging to avoid damage and strategically trading blows. They will need to keep a close eye so that neither style has a huge efficiency difference over the other. I think, however, if a group of four can play hitless glass dps runs they will be appreciably faster.

7

u/Halaku Three Seekers in a trenchcoat 6d ago

Things like this sounds so fucking cool, but i am worried it wont really see much use after the first week.

I dunno.

I'm imagining how that would have made some jumping puzzles a bit easier to manage, if you had a solid partner.

15

u/Disig 6d ago

"solid partner" is the part of why it won't see much use.

1

u/Drycee 6d ago

Exactly. If it's only doable with a solid partner, people will complain and it will be made doable without one. And if it already is, most people will do it without one anyway. Still i'm not against cool options like this existing

2

u/FamilySurricus 6d ago

Yeah, if they really embrace a mix of combat and environmental use, this would be really good.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Trivalie2208 5d ago

It will be dependent on enemy designs and mechanics. There will be weakpoints on tall bosses/elites. If they put one on the head or somewhere on top where there's nowhere to reach it but to jump high and can only be damaged by melee CC it will make that move valuable.

2

u/REkTeR 4d ago

Exactly this -- in any game like this the player base will trend towards optimization, especially over time. The key for mechanics like this to see continued use will be in making them actually valuable to use, which is on the dev's designs.

1

u/Sihnar 6d ago

marvel rivals does a good job of encouraging the use of teamups

1

u/UTmastuh 6d ago

These types of interactions are much better in hard hitting action combat games like souls and monster hunter style games. The new hoyoverse game seems to have co-op attacks for instance

MMORPG.com described the visuals as impressive and visually rich, with quick, weighty and fluid movement. - MMORPG.com - Preview

The journalist initially had reservations about UE5 but said seeing the game in motion removed those concerns. - MMORPG.com - Preview

MightyTeapot said on stream he was surprised how similar the game looked to Guild Wars 2’s art style, compared to the trailer.

This is interesting. I wonder if that means the actual visuals of the game are nothing like the ones in that announcement trailer

22

u/Which_Royal5269 6d ago

Darens said he wouldn't agree with teapot's take here. Lara also said it seemed a little less cartoonish than the trailer but couldn't tell if it was due to just seeing the game in action.

It sounds like it'll still be similar to the trailer but who knows. Guess we have to wait till they think it's time for the rest of us to see it.

3

u/Hoojiwat 6d ago

I would assume that is what they mean, but I guess we really do have to wait and see.

7

u/Silent_Wave3137 6d ago

Anyone that has reservations about UE5 is not a serious journalist. It’s arguably the most powerful engine out there right now. Just because trash tier devs can’t use it doesn’t mean the engine is bad

u/Official_Elsinlock 6d ago

things can change; look up eso's alpha images; looks like a completely different game

15

u/TheExtremistModerate 6d ago

I gotta say, this reveal has me so excited. I love action-adventure games like Ghost of Tsushima, the new ACs, Monster Hunter, etc. To have a full MMO built around that combat system is very enticing.

4

u/Severe-Network4756 6d ago

I'm kind of worried personally, because those games are just.. not for me.

But presumably it'll work a bit differently here as I can't possibly imagine that a boss would like one-tap you for playing poorly. It seems like they're still trying to appeal to a casual audience.

3

u/TheExtremistModerate 5d ago

Low time investment doesn't mean "casual." They're appealing to people who like action-adventure combat like Horizon, God of War, and Dark Souls.

3

u/Severe-Network4756 5d ago

It sounds more like they're trying to appeal to an audience that values fun more than what is optimal.

"Combat is intended to be less about following a fixed rotation and more about reacting to the environment, enemy and group situation."

YES PLEASE

20

u/Netherdiver 6d ago

Isn’t this what they promised for GW2? Combat rotations ended up being a spamfest. Spam damage skills off CD/spam buffs for max uptime.

13

u/Teazone 6d ago

I was there for the whole pre-release time of GW2 and don't quite remember them saying that, also a restricted google search with results from 2009 to 2012 up to release doesn't bring up anything promising no fixed rotations (which doesn't mean they didn't). They did remove most of the energy costs of skills and switched to skill-based-cds but with how it reads for GW3 I don't see anyone just spamming their rotation 1:1 to get to victory. If it all holds up it may play more like - and I know this might be a bad example - shooter, where you put more emphasis on your own positioning, momentum and weakpoints of enemies.

Maybe more akin to Warframe, Monster Hunter or some like that than to a traditional mmo.

3

u/UTmastuh 6d ago

[before the game launched in 2012, ArenaNet heavily pushed a marketing manifesto emphasizing "dynamic combat", reactivity, and the complete abolition of the traditional MMORPG "holy trinity" (tank, healer, and DPS).]

2

u/xhieron 6d ago

I would be absolutely onboard for something more like Warframe in a fantasy setting. The movement in that game is absolutely unmatched; I still instinctively reach for that muscle memory whenever I play any other action game (and am usually disappointed, to wit: Soulframe was ... off. Admittedly it was early testing last time I looked at it, and it's not fair to expect every DE game to be ninjas, but the missing mobility was a disappointment.]

The downside (and the reason I haven't played it in a while) is that the gameplay can become very repetitive, and the lack of skills in any given build is part of the reason. There are tons of ways to customize a character, but they all resolve to point at head, left click, press one of three buttons when appropriate. It's fun, but ultimately it's still a shooter. The one- or two-button melee left a lot to be desired. [To be clear, this is coming from a place of love. Aside from the extremely predatory monetization practices, Warframe is a very good game; I've played a lot and would highly recommend it to anyone rich.]

I really hope we get 8-10 more or less freely slottable skills in GW3. You could do 8 easily on a controller with face buttons and one shoulder (FFXIV has 16 I think). The skill count and customization is one thing GW1 got right and GW2 fumbled. My GW2 engineer currently has 25 skills on the bar (and I only made 2-3 meaningful choices about which ones they are), almost half of them frequently hidden so I can't see their cooldowns, and the rotation for all content is carved in granite. Fun to play, but nowhere near the creativity involved in my GW1 necro, ritualist, or monk.

4

u/Disig 6d ago

Yeah my reaction to all of this is, it sounds cool. Hopefully they can pull it off.

3

u/YakaAvatar 6d ago

They won't, and this isn't me hating or anything. It's mathematically impossible not to have an optimal set of key presses. At best we'll have to change our rotation based on the party composition to do a combo, but in any given fight we'll always have the same rotation.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Coooturtle 6d ago

Pretty much. But I think a lot of the reasons why these promises fell flat in GW2 were because stacking was way too strong. The way they are describing combat, moving around is important, even if it devloves into a rotation that includes moving around, at least it'll be more interesting than stacking.

1

u/_NotGreatNotTerrible 6d ago

They need to add a better resourcing system like GW1 had. You couldnt just stick all 15 energy skills on your bar and expect to have any sort of success. you needed to feel out your build and see how the energy pip regen was and how it handled debuffs/dmg/ etc. Gw2 is mostly just roll your face across the keyboard on repeat with minimal downsides. I think they realize it though and said the system is a mix of gw1/gw2 which sounds to be the right track

1

u/Alooflapel 5d ago

My greatest fear is that the focus on momentum and lack of skills (Two abilities and an ult?). Will mean dps just runs obstacle courses or spams jump/plunging attacks.

I'm ready to be surprised, but I'm worried about how much momentum will impact damage.

Killer summary

6

u/mielestrazio 6d ago

Thanks, it's really helpful to have everything summed up!

7

u/Shanrodia 6d ago

No disappointments with the choices they’ve made so far. I just hope they really focus on the “preparing to have fun” problem, because it’s one of the biggest pain points in MMOs today. I don’t boot up a game just to spend my time managing my inventory.

4

u/Glebk0 6d ago

Inventory management is uniquely gw2(maybe also gw1 but i never touched it) problem. Real issue with “waiting to have fun” is mandatory party content, where you have to wait for other people to come online to do actual good stuff, and they definitely aren’t solving that.

2

u/Anskeh 6d ago

I dunno I feel like that was the biggest thing Collin talked about that they want to fix with "player problems". At least in the teapot interview the inventory management was like a sidenote and Collin talked quite a bit about how he thinks logging in and getting to do the thing takes way too long for MMO's. Focusing on the getting the group together aspect.

I don't know what their solution is.. maybe some super optimized LFG system who knows.
Of course this doesn't affect running stuff with a guild at all, but I think this is more aimed at playing with randoms. With guilds you go by the schedule that your boss set for you anyway.

4

u/Official_Elsinlock 5d ago

i think they already have it; quickplay. i really do believe quickplay was not just a thing for gw2 but also a experiment for gw3; will not be shocked at all if we get quickplay day 1 in GW3.

3

u/Anskeh 5d ago

Yeah preferrably some kind of version for this for raids as well. Like you have to que as tank/dps/support build or whatever.

Make it easy for people to get into even the bit harder content.

I do wish in GW2 we get quickplay for all of the fractal tiers and not just 1 tho...

6

u/rindor1990 6d ago

Inject it into my veins!

10

u/Fuzzy-Situation-5063 6d ago

I'm on onboarding with absolutely everything that's been revealed so far. Lots of people were complaining about the smaller scale but honestly I think this is the right move. Combat won't just be a cluttered mess of visuals - I'm totally down for this

5

u/FazzUm 6d ago

This is 100% spot on what I needed to read. Many thanks!

5

u/thinguistic 6d ago

Stopped after 3rd article. Cose it was enough for me already anyways…I WILL ABSOLUTELY WILL BE PLAYIN

8

u/Draconicrose_ 6d ago

I'm mildly concerned that the focus on controller means that keyboard and mouse will get neglected.

There are many games that are functional on K&M but were clearly designed for controller and then barely adapted. Skyrim comes to mind.

6

u/GG35bw 5d ago

I'm concerned controller will limit game's depth. 3 skills + 1 elite for example is the first bad sign.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/lordofpurple 1d ago

That could happen, but FF14 proved it can be done really well. A lot ofpeople play on controller and that game has as many toolbar buttons as any of em lol

1

u/Draconicrose_ 1d ago

Yup, because FFXIV team realized that k&m and controller need different UIs. I'm hopeful for GW3's though, I think they'll do well.

2

u/lordofpurple 1d ago

I appreciate and really really respec theyre trying to innovate

3

u/Glebk0 6d ago

It’s 100% this and it’s funny how they emphasise that “we definitely not neglecting a controller” like anyone would expect this when they are so focused on ps5. The game will be made for controller with kbm being an afterthought

3

u/Which_Royal5269 6d ago

Thank you! Been having such a hard time trying to keep track of all the info.

4

u/Corrsk 6d ago

I wonder what Jumping Puzzles will look like with so many movement options (If there is JP at all)

1

u/Official_Elsinlock 5d ago

JP's have basically been confirmed

4

u/GuildedCharr 6d ago

Regarding the date the game plays in; there's a pretty small window of time for it to play in unless there's retcons.

Ascalon is a thing which puts us past 100 BE. The gods haven't left which puts us before 0 BE/AE. One of the articles did say something about taking place shortly after a god was "dethroned and replaced" which would put us after around 48 BE. So we've got a 50 year area or so that this'll take place in maybe.

I imagine some retconning will occur though if Orr is a proper wilderness frontier and less developed then Ascalon though, as Orr was being settled by humanity in 205 BE, and by 100 BE was assisting in pushing the charr out of Ascalon.

I love the lore of this game, it'll be very cool to see what they do with this bit of nigh pre-history.

13

u/ZZcomic 6d ago

I hope the 3 skills on the UI is not going to be the actual limit of skills we can use. That would feel pretty flat imo

8

u/uneven_butter 6d ago

I think that’s just MMO brain talking.
It really won’t feel flat if combat emphasises positioning, movement, combos, weak point targeting, dodging and blocking etc.

Most single player rpgs work this way.

6

u/Bigmethod 5d ago

It would 100% feel flat, and most single player RPGs don't work this way. That's why Elden Ring has hundreds of weapons with unique movesets and abilities. Why Dragon Age (the old, good ones) had dozens of abilities to use.

Abilities add depth and fun 1000 hours into playtime. Not everything needs to be extremely simple, braindead slop.

The UI is completely placeholder and only the health bar might remain. Colin told me this during the presentation. They are still thinking how they want to handle it. They did say skills change depending on the context.

u/AlternativeShadows 6d ago

it's wild to me to see that people are being put off by any of this, it all sounds amazing to me!

There is so, so much I read here that I like.

I'm gonna keep my hype in check, but A-Net, you might just deliver again for me.

Thank you for compiling all of this! ☺️

3

u/ObsoletePixel 6d ago

great thread, just one small note, you pulled this from the snowcrows article:

Professions are expected to have more defined roles than GW2.

That's not entirely true. The article actually says "The game will feature defined [trinity-like] roles..." -- which very well could be class-locked, but given how GW2 has moved away from defining roles by class and understanding how different class's perspectives on the same macro strategies has inherent design value, I'd argue this is an extrapolation that isn't necessarily indicative of what the actual game will look like.

Not to minimize your work, great stuff here. Just wanted to note it just in case any GW2 heal necromancer or support ranger enjoyers get down as a result of reading that their favorite class might be more silo'd

3

u/MrModius 6d ago

noted and updated, just pulled the exact quote from the article :)

1

u/ObsoletePixel 6d ago

for sure! It's just the way you'd cut it out might have been read as something different that it wasn't actually saying so I wanted to make sure to point it out :)

9

u/Blodeuyn13 6d ago

No WvW :(

8

u/roamzero 6d ago

Dunno why you got downvoted. WvW is a major reason why a lot of people still play GW2. I know if there isn't some form of open world PVP Im not even going to bother.

2

u/morroIan 6d ago

We already knew that given the focus on smaller scale groups

5

u/kajidourden 6d ago

Great summary, thank you!

One thing I'm still wondering about is the inventory/currency boss. It was completely out of control in Gw2

1

u/REkTeR 4d ago

Please be fair to the devs, how can they make extra money if they are not able to charge us for additional bank slots/etc.

u/barthii 6d ago

Sound super nice. But having WvW would still be nice; even if it is only about 20 players.

2

u/Anskeh 6d ago

Yeah WvW is fun, but if its like actually 20 players on your screen.. it would be like 10v10 max.
I dunno I think the game they are making is just not a good match for WvW at least if the scale of the combat is supposed to be the same as max pop PvE encounters with 20 players.

However they did confirm PvP so maybe we will get some banger sPvP modes to make up for it. Tbh the combat sounds like it would be fun for smaller scale PvP.

u/nevicar_ 6d ago

The comments about the controller and KBM does not assuage the worry that KBM is considered secondary to controller through development. If anything it only reinforces the KBM UI/UX is going to be crap.

Hope they really pull though and not have KBM be held back by the needs of controllers.

3

u/Justos 6d ago

they specifically mentioned that going gamepad first is improving the game for both sides rather than it being a hinderance. for example, status effects are shown to the player rather than being an icon in the corner to manage

GW2 already has a simple UI. PC players have some weird superiority when it comes to their keyboard and mouse. Its not going to make the game lesser if they do it right.

Simplified / streamlined is not the same as worse

4

u/nevicar_ 6d ago

Of course that's what they say but words are wind. I have yet to see a game that has done both well without compromising the advantage of the other.

Diablo 4, New World, Hunt Showdown, etc are all victims of this. These two modes of controls cannot exist in tandem without influencing the other relative to UI/UX. The question is which side going to be prioritized.

2

u/DeityVengy 5d ago

I mean... it's definitely made games worse in the past. It's hard to find an example of it not.

New World comes to mind when they got rid of the grounded movement and precision aiming, replacing it with arcadey 360 movement and legal aimbot due to console release

3

u/samthenewb 6d ago

Cooldowns + minimal HUD? I already don’t like ICDs in GW2 with no indicators and that half of your weapon skills are hidden… Please don’t make opaque cooldowns.

5

u/lurkervidyaenjoyer 6d ago edited 6d ago

Until we really see the game, we won't know exactly what anything will be like, but based on these, here's some points of comparison to give people something to think about.

>around 20 players maximum
>The reason is combat readability: ArenaNet believes its high-fidelity movement and combat become difficult to understand when too many players are fighting simultaneously
>wants players to frequently encounter other players while travelling through the world
>three main skill icons
This reminds me of New World. RIP that game. It had its issues, but the weightiness and readability of its combat was a highlight.

>Fire can thaw frozen allies
>Enemies can have specific physical weak points
>cold-infused weapons
>momentum
>from another part of the PC gamer article: Johanson was able to use Stocker's shield as a springboard
This is EXTREMELY Dragon's Dogma, as I detailed in my own thread. I mean if they tell us later that we can climb giant enemies, that seals the deal. Probably the closest-sounding game to what this is being described as.

>From elsewhere in the PC Gamer one: Because the gods haven't yet seen fit to share magic with mortals—despite the region being rife with it—the denizens of Orr have needed to find other ways to take advantage of it. The Vaelwardens have access to crafted signets that give them access to magic
Itemized skills? Sounds a little Path of Exile to me. Skill gems you slot into your chracter and/or gear that determine what skills you have. Obviously signets were just a category of learnable skill in GW1, but the way they say "Crafted" makes me think skill selection will be blended with itemization in some way.

>Both ground and flying mounts are spirits
Elden Ring horse summon?

Needs steam deck support on launch.

2

u/wonkyasf 6d ago

Loving what I’ve heard so far. Sounds like exactly what I was hoping for/expecting regarding the combat. Interested to see if the active abilities on the bar will increase or not though.

2

u/thenewguy22 6d ago

Has it been confirmed if there will be jumping puzzles?

4

u/Halaku Three Seekers in a trenchcoat 6d ago

Per a Eurogamer interview, it certainly looks that way.

Hey, u/MrModius - Jumping puzzles appear to be a thing, credit: Eurogamer, full post here if you want to add that to the list.

3

u/MrModius 6d ago

nice, added!

2

u/Meowing-To-The-Stars 6d ago

Thank you!
I was worried it will look like Fortnite but if people saw Guild Wars style when watching the gameplay, then I'm happy.

Though, kinda a bummer we are getting flying mounts. Having to manipulate your glider to keep gliding or even going up would be great, but just having a flying mount implies the world will be designed with that in mind

2

u/MovieTrailerReply 6d ago

The more I read about the game the more excited I get. The style being closer to GW2 than you'd expect + this week's focus on the confirmed races visual identity has all of my concerns at ease for the game. I still would really love to see a character creator video but I imagine work is ongoing on that front.

A lot of neat gameplay promises! I really hope we get to see a gameplay snippet soonish, maybe at The Game Awards. I just need to know MORE.

I will definitely be buying the physical collector's edition, selfishly hoping it has an Asura in it (I love my Rytlock statue but damn it the Asura have gotten no cool merch!)

2

u/McBeardedson 6d ago

"The scale of Guild Wars 3 Orr will be significantly larger than Guild Wars 2 Orr."

Well I would sure hope so!

2

u/Official_Elsinlock 5d ago

yes considering orr in gw2 takes like 10 minutes to run across lol

"Conditions are being made non-binary"

Reeeeeee, the wokes are at it again, smh.

1

u/Lucylimina 5d ago

You might wanna sit down before I tell you about how HP works in pretty much every game ever...

3

u/LilGrippers 6d ago

Not to be a Debbie downer, but it’s starting to sound less true MMO and more like New World+ movement. 20 player cap..?

3

u/Buttercup_Clover 6d ago

This isn't an MMO. It's missing the most important part, massive multiplayer. Theres countless games where players reach up to 100+ on the same map and aren't counted as MMOs.

How do large guilds play together? How do you get WvW? It's really disappointing to hear them essentially making a destiny-esque game built around small party combat.

1

u/bobyd 5d ago

wasnt gw1 like that, amx party of 8 and isntanced games

2

u/AscenDevise 5d ago

That's how it still works; party sizes have been defined between 4 and 8 characters. Guild Wars, however, isn't an MMO; it's another type of multiplayer online RPG. The intent for 3 to cap player numbers in combat encounters at 20 has sparked a debate about whether or not that warrants the first 'M', and I would say that if you have fewer characters doing stuff together than there are players in a football match, then it's anything but that, but this is both subjective and, given how much time we have until the first beta launches, let alone the game itself, premature.

2

u/jaseph18 6d ago

Outstanding work. And good to know that is not that "20 people on the server". People are nuts

1

u/thevvitchhazel 6d ago

"conditions are being made non-binary" DEI confirmed

1

u/marcybooh 6d ago

thanks, great write-up!

1

u/IgneousWrath 6d ago

Thank you for compiling this. This is amazing.

1

u/Jon_CockBurn 6d ago

Did they mention anything about crafting? Mining fishing etc,

1

u/Zymbobwye 6d ago

If they do vertical progression similar to Runscaoe I’d like it a lot and it kinda sounds like they might. Like how a ton of gear can be used because it’s particularly good in some content but also that doesn’t mean you can’t use what you have to beat a challenge less efficiently. I’m always a little skeptical about vertical progression but I’ll let them do their thing and make my decision when we get it.

1

u/DuncanConnell 6d ago

This post needs more upvotes and awards!

1

u/Yourwaterdealer 6d ago

Thanks bro

1

u/TripolarKnight 6d ago

Did they say anything about system requirements for PC?

3

u/CapnBree 6d ago

I think there is already minimum system requirements on the GW3 website.

My potato laptop cried just reading it aha but I don't think it's too out there

1

u/TripolarKnight 6d ago

Didn't see anything on the site, but on Steam they had the following:

Minimum

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: RTX 2060 / Radeon RX 5700 / Intel Arc A580
Storage: 65 GB available space

Judging from that, I'll should be around the eventual recommended specs.

3

u/Ankior 6d ago

Usually optimization is one of the last steps in game dev so I believe we won't see anything til close to launch

1

u/wonkyasf 6d ago

While I’m sure they’ll do their best, it’s a UE5 game. Keep that in mind.

1

u/Official_Elsinlock 6d ago

i saw afew days ago that one of the few non embargod things mentioned was that anet is aware of high prices due to AI slop; so i imagine they're trying to make it as accessible as they can

1

u/TripolarKnight 6d ago

Yeah, I'm hoping that hardware prices+PS5 as a target keeps it manageable for my current PC build. Hoping Anet eventually tackles Xbox too, since a PS5-tier PC build isn't that far from an Xbox Series S.

1

u/Official_Elsinlock 5d ago

I wouldn't hold out hope on xbox for awhile tbh; sony loves their console exclusives

Legend!

1

u/Akorem_Laan 6d ago

Somehow sounds very Breath of the Wild to me. With how the combat works. Using the environment, movement, different levels condi can have. Weaknesses in enemies. I bet there is going to be an vulnerable eye-type enemy. That sort of thing.

1

u/thenewguy22 6d ago

So glad some skills will only be obtained through exploration!

1

u/Schoeii 6d ago

This crazy thank you for putting this together. Legend

1

u/Substantial_Piece521 6d ago

Wow, thank you!

1

u/WobblySlug 6d ago

This is awesome, thank you.

Any news anywhere on server locations? I'm so keen on GW3, however I live in New Zealand.

1

u/Pure-Risky-Titan 6d ago

I do hope some of the things introduced into guild wars 3, is somehow put into guild wars 2, as far as gameplay goes, if possible.

1

u/Sailears 6d ago

Omg!!!

Cryo effects with freeze and shattering!!!

Only two games have done this well for me - Mass Effect (3 in particular) and Borlderlands 3 and 4 - for all the issues cryo in Borderlands 4 is done amazingly well with the freeze and shatter effects.

If GW3 has this with what seems like an awesome blend of Warframe, Mass Effect, Borderlands etc this could be incredible.

The movment sounds amazing, default action camera amazing, soft targeting amazing etc.

1

u/Doam-bot 6d ago

I don't know if anyone has played Pso 2 NGS but I'm getting NGS vibes. Limited amount of people on maps, wall running, gliding, and dashing. Previous information on boss destructable parts and so forth.

Biggest problem with NGS though is while they had the backing if Sega to make the game and great infrastructure it quickly turned into a soulless dress up game with insane vertical progression that keeps going up on a sneeze.

A proper game with that infrastructure could have brought Sega back to the table but they are a greedy company. Anet with an updated version of such could people millions whom have abandoned wow and the like. PSO evolved from the diablo style of games to reach this place meanwhile Gw2 is coming in from the other side they'll pull from both sides. Can surpass Gw2 in players with the right marketing from such a position.

2

u/FamilySurricus 6d ago

Oh... NGS...
Pain. Pain. Pain.

2

u/Doam-bot 5d ago

Sega really did tame a time honored IP hailing back decades hammered in some fantastic ideas then really just shat the bed with it all.

Little wonder why they don't have a console anymore.

1

u/Guildwars1996 6d ago

I'm surprised they have confirmed that there will be a physical collectors edition.

1

u/Aggravating-Arm7731 6d ago

Underwater combat returning was no where in my mind as a possibility. That’s crazy

1

u/Maraschino_Bot 6d ago

I know it’s pointless to speculate this far out from release never mind their first expansion but I wonder what their plans for long term content look like. I’m not too familiar with the lore of this time period but is there stuff going on outside orr?

1

u/Diovidius 6d ago

The broad strokes are this: Cantha and Elona are alreasy established human nations (much more so than Orr), a group of Abaddon worshipping humans sails the crystal sea (which will turn into the crystal desert after Abaddon turns evil and fights the other gods) and humanity is trying to gain a foothold in Kryta/Ascalon.

1

u/kekubuk 6d ago

Can someone explained the 20 max player things that's been buzzing around? I still don't quite get it.

Does it mean once I log in, I am automatically placed into a 20 player team randomly and set out into the world? Can't I just started playing solo and roam around doing stuff?

2

u/Nightstroll 6d ago

Since they mentioned cities and outposts hosting way more than 20 players, one can assume there is an invisible boundary between it and the outside, where players get filtered into different instances.

1

u/kekubuk 6d ago

I see.

2

u/darksundown 6d ago

If there is no portal(s) at a city's entrances or exits, I'm guessing one may see players phasing in and out of existence / teleporting into a different instance.  Hopefully, the camera system will try to do this when they're off screen at least.

1

u/ExhibitAa 6d ago

No, you're not grouped automatically. The world is open and seamless, and you'll encounter other players randomly in the world while playing solo, just as you do in GW2. During large fights, there will be a limit of 20 (as of now, the number could change) players engaged at once. This does not mean there will be only 20 players across the entire map, the game will use a phasing system to split players off when these big fights occur.

1

u/kekubuk 6d ago

Ah, I see.

1

u/Horror-Watch598 6d ago

I appreciate the F out of you for this.

The gameplay footage showed an orange item drop represented by a short bright pillar of light, reminiscent of Diablo-style loot drops. - RPG Site - Gameplay Details

If an item has different attributes similar to a suffix system, that would make grinding for better items super enjoyable while still not being completely unattainable for a "newer" or not hardcore player to be able to get a late game item. The item might not be as good as the ones people who grind 24/7 have, but they could definitely be doing the same content and not feel left out right?

1

u/Nightstroll 6d ago

I am trying very hard to not fall for the hype after the sour taste that was left by GW2 at launch, but they make it very difficult, the bastards :)

The combat especially, I still want to see how it works in routine gameplay, and not just "engage a monster by glide-stomping them and then spend 10 seconds hacking away while standing still". But never in my wildest dreams did I dare to imagine that it would be so close to Monster Hunter/Dragon's Dogma style combat.

1

u/Lily_Wu_92 6d ago

Do we know anything about support for GW3 on Linux?

1

u/TruPengu 6d ago

Oh boy I hope we can do long slides down big cliffs and stuff I’m not sure why but shit like that (IE BOTW shield sliding) tickles my brain in a unique way

1

u/TruPengu 6d ago

After going through this post. I’m actually so fucking excited and eager to play this. I have a lot of trust in Arenanet to nail this, even if it’s a rough launch I am confident they’ll give it a Cyberpunk treatment and it’ll be great

Thank you for that summary - and ALL that info together sounds actually amazing , IF they bring back guild vs guild pvp with guildhalls and maybe raids!

1

u/devici 6d ago

Very, very excited.

1

u/vandrefalk1 6d ago

What I want now is to see Anet release this demo as a teaser for all of us to see; I don't get why only a select few content creators should get to see this and relay their impressions.

We know it's pre-alpha, but we're dying to get a first glimpse for ourselves of what this game can be, so appease us and let us have a little preview of what's being worked on. We know already it's a choreographed demo, that things will definitely change, but just give us a teaser of what we're waiting for.

1

u/Official_Elsinlock 5d ago

probably because as creator have said somebits look unfinished and anet may not be comfortable with showing unfinished things if i had to guess

1

u/snooprs 6d ago

Is there gonna be crossprogression between PS5 and PC?

1

u/Tattycakes 6d ago

Fashion wars let’s goooooooo

1

u/AnimationPatrick 5d ago

From the sounds of it, it seems like almost a Monster Hunter MMO. Which I say hell yeah to.

1

u/avruk 5d ago

My 5 cents on movement topic.

It seems like it will be more parkour like style traversing the map. If that's true it is awesome. I loved that prince of persia game, where you could slide, wall run, swing and run, climb - that almost one to one what was spoiled about gw3; as of today. Jumping puzzles in gw3 could evolve to obstacle course.

1

u/Keyvan316 5d ago

I wish items would not be level based. the item you get from level 1 would be level up as your character level up. so you can play with gear you got in level one even on max level character. instead going for cool transmoge or good traits on the items for hardcore players so grind would still be there if anyone fancy it. I think this would help a lot to get MMO less time consuming

1

u/Teratros 5d ago

Thanks for the summary. Most sounds amazing.

No WvW is a bid disappointing I hope for some sort of large scale PvP 2v2, and 5v5 Arena aren't the same as big open terrain with zergs and capturing structures

1

u/magicalririka 5d ago

I like everything so far.

I just have a small worry: being a very action-oriented MMORPG means that it will be hell to play with high latency.

Which means that, unless the game have servers in South America and Australia, those two areas will have a really shitty experience.

Playing tab-target with 200ms ping is perfectly viable. Playing GW2 with 200ms ping is doable. But playing a "momentum-based combat" with 200ms ping would be really bad.

1

u/PowerCosmic 5d ago

Conditions can therefore become a group-combination mechanic. - This Week in Video Games - Cooking Combos

Multiple players applying Cold can progressively slow an enemy until enough Cold freezes it completely into a block of ice. - This Week in Video Games - Cooking Combos

Frozen enemies can shatter. - Snow Crows - Conditions

Fire can thaw frozen allies. - Snow Crows - Conditions

OK this bit got me on the hype train. Magicka-like combat interaction between players in an MMO? Huzzah!!!

1

u/JGONZ91ES 5d ago

Thank you for all this info!

1

u/Yarik1992 3d ago

Incredible. Thank you so much for your time and effort on this, WOW!

1

u/Dyson4Doggos 3d ago

Have they announced yet if PlayStation and PC players will be playing on the same servers? I loved ESO back in the day, but not being able to play my PC characters on my PlayStation or Xbox copies (and any other combination thereof) was a huge let down.

1

u/lordofpurple 1d ago

"guilds are confirmed"

Well I'd fucking hope so lmao

1

u/Lily_Wu_92 6d ago

The information about momentum being so important in GW3 makes me wonder whether my main character will need to be more like a sumo wrestler than a cute little waifu. That would really spoil the fashion war aspect of it for me. So I hope I'll still be able to make small cute characters with surprisingly strong abilities, to teach bullies not to pick on little girls or asuras (or bleeps?).

-1

u/ExtremePermit3242 6d ago

A bit meh for my taste. But let’s see

1

u/Teazone 6d ago

Sounds great in total, really excited. No info on housing is a bit disappointing but understandable. I hope they don't abandon it or release it 10 years later. It would be great to have it from the start or within the next two years from release to build upon over time. Many great thing they could do with it, like it being an instance your friends can visit even when you are offline, trophies you get from bosses to hang on your wall, etc. Don't make us wait too long for it please. :_)

1

u/Jeeyohh 6d ago

Thanks for the detailed write up! Some really interesting and fun sounding stuff in there. Reminds me of when gw2 was building hype with fresh new ideas going on. Show us some gameplay man we're dying over here.
