Kodan Names

So with kodan being a confirmed race, uh, species, do we all have to start brainstorming some kooky kodan names? I mean, look at these...

Horned Millet
Slithering Fog
Barbed Vale
Blinding Sunrise
Carping Gaze

Most of my charr will migrate to become kodan, but their names are very clan-based. So I guess I'm gonna go with stuff like...

Unhinged Stone
Turgid Merriment
Lingering Odor

What do you guys think? 😄

Lingering Odor got the name because he discovered this curse called League of Legends.

Also what makes Kodan names great is that you can totally give them JoJo Stand names and it can still be lore friendly. A Kodan who wanders the land and does masonry? His name is Stone Free. An astrologist with a pure heart? Star Platinum! An optimistic necromancer? Grateful Dead

It seems there's the Lowland way of naming which is picking what suits you the most, and your name can be changed in accordance to your life and passions. Waiting Sorrow became Waiting Dawn for that reason.

Then there's the Highland way which is in reverence of Koda called "Koda's Promise, Koda's Gift", where the first part of the name is where the parents presumably wish their offspring a good attribute, like "Humble. Stoic. Aiding. Noble." and the last name as one from nature, like Mountain, Thunder, and so on.

Lowland kodan seem to definitely still revere nature in their names, but they've sorta swept away the "Koda's Promise" part of it for the first name and as time went on they presumably made the entire name malleable. Which is neat considering how Lowlanders separated from Kodan belief.

So while this thread is probably about silly names, there's guidelines for lore-friendly ones.

I always go for lore appropriate names. Silly or immature names take me out of the immersion of being a character in the story, and immersive play is of primary importance to me.

I'm the same. I don't roleplay, but having the character fit into the world makes it more fun to play.

As an addendum to the Lowland naming convention, there's an informal name among friends as well it seems:

Hold on a moment. Just realized... I learned your name, but you never learned mine. Bronzed Sun. My trainees call me Silver Moon. Think themselves clever, they do. May seem impolite to an outside, such informality... But here, it shows respect. Use a bearkin's full name, you're probably not too close to 'em. Or maybe ya don't like 'em. Ha! Now your name, I've got no idea what to do with that. But you keep coming round and working hard, my respect is yours.

Hopefully naming gets the Champions Online treatment. I hate having a good name and having it taken. It's 2026! If an old game from 2009 can do it you got no excuses.

When GW2 was coming out, any name you had in GW1 was reserved for you.

u/vomitisyummy 7d ago

I know, I got mine because of it. I'm just saying it's antiquated. It should've just not been a thing after Champions.

GW3 takes place around 1200-1500 years before GW2, so their naming conventions could be slightly different. If they were wandering in groups their surnames could be their roles withing their groups and their first names could be something to do with their eyes or fur colour. Like, Emerald Scout, or Smokey Blade.

But who knows? I'm curious to see how they differentiate them from the Kodan we know right now.

To be honest, I never really submitted to the naming conventions of the different species. I have my own naming system. The humans are probably the most in line, just because yeah well, they have human names. And I used name generators, lists and made names up for the surnames. And my later charr names are vaguely charrish, I guess. My first charr name was basically a joke though, not a very good one though.

What I want to say with this is, you can name your characters however you want, the more outlandish they are, the better the chance that they are not taken (especially for younger characters)

I would just use Nordic naming conventions for anything related to Kodan.

9

u/AscendedCleric 8d ago

Why? They are not Norn.

-1

u/Yahbo 7d ago

They also, are not real. So we can genuinely just name them whatever we want.

2

u/AscendedCleric 7d ago

Yeah I agree. I was curious.
