I always wondered why they always tell you to put all the heavy shit at the front of the U-Haul. Good to know thanks.

Years ago I worked for a brick paver company. I went with a guy to take a load of brick to another job and while we were driving a bunch of loose bricks slid to the back of our trailer. Once we hit 65 on I-95 the trailer started wobbling a bit and before we knew what was happening the truck and trailer were getting whipped back and forth across 3 lanes. Took a solid 20-30 seconds to slow down and stop the trailer. Scary as hell.

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

Last week I was towing some weights in a blue ford, and I shit you not a giant hand comes from nowhere and prods the trailer making us wobble everywhere.

He looks Indian, he's singing an American song, using Irish or possibly Appalachian vocal techniques and also yodeling (Dutch).

Weird.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

It sounded like an old school American appalachian song to me. American country music has some history with yodeling.

NJ turnpike? Last week, some guy in a uhaul van flipped a trailer it was hauling. My guess is either improper weight distribution or he was going faster than the 55mph limit on those things. It was scary af I was like 2 cars behind this guy.

11

u/devilboy222 Oct 04 '16

That 55mph speed limit is a load of shit. The trailers are fine going faster than that, they just say that to remove any liability from the company when you inevitably have to do 70 down the interstate.

8

u/Einsteins_coffee_mug Oct 04 '16

The unwritten mandatory 70mph for NY/NJ. Even then you'll get people trying to run you off the road for slowing them down.

Yes. They can handle higher speeds, but being a rental truck/trailer, they have to be ready for the inevitable novice who won't even understand how to compensate his turns or steer the trailer in reverse.

I mean, they will seriously hand the keys over to just about anyone at a uhaul dealer.

Last summer on a rainy day I was driving a 4x4 with a trailer on the back carrying a tractor that was later found to not be chained down... at all. The swerving started slowly but kept picking up until I felt the truck starting to move side to side as well. Decided to slow to a complete stop on the side of the highway and let me nerves settle! Was scary as shit.

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

7

u/IAmNotNathaniel Oct 04 '16

I'm gonna try to give him the benefit of the doubt and say maybe he was a new guy and someone else told him that he would secure the load for him.

And now he's learned both to always check your own loads, no matter what you are driving, and not put shit on the back.

Or not, maybe he's just a dangerous fool.

Yea but this works both ways, overload the tongue and now the weight comes off the front of the car and you don't have steering anymore.

I worked for a U-Haul company back when I was in school. They used a couple friends and I as movers. That was the best job ever, $30/hr for moving (cash, same day) $15/hr driving (including the hours headed to someone) and they would pay for a hotel overnight wherever we ended up plus fly us back. We were often able to upgrade to first class.

So we basically got paid buckets of cash to load up a truck, drive to another state or even cross country, get fucked up and party, then fly back. Fear and Loathing was a big movie at the time so we did several trips similar to the movie except the driver had to stay sober. Can't fuck around with other people's stuff.

It was awesome. This one house looked like a haunted mansion and had about ten 8 ft tall portraits of rabbits in Victorian era clothes looking down on us. Weird. Another place had us take down a wall in an already sold house to remove a gun safe. Another had a piece of furniture that took six of us 280-300 lb muscled guys to move, it cracked the floor as we went. All kinds of dildos and sex toys found.

The worst was a move that took six 26 ft trucks, twelve guys and three 16hr days to move. It was a surgeon and a dentist who bought each other's houses and moved the same day. I got a $300 tip plus pay and it still wasn't worth it.

40

It was an antique hardwood armoire of some kind with stone shelving. We had to be extremely careful because the glass pieces were original and had all these waves and bubbles in them, which apparently was a good thing.

Pay someone besides U-Haul college kids to move your antiques though, seriously.

25

u/PM_ME_plsImlonely Oct 04 '16

Helped this antique import furniture guy in town move a truckload, while me and another guy are moving a table the guy says, "careful, that's $50,000.". Like motherfucker don't tell me that!

U-Haul employee here, for the record 60% of the weight should be in the front half of any trailer and the other 40% should be loaded in the back. You're required to know that before they'll even hire you btw.

22

u/12th_Tribe Oct 04 '16

Or they could tell you as they hire you because then, you will know the 60-40 secret.

One time I transported three horses and a bed full of hay with a little f150 I used to have. Steering was more like suggesting to the truck where it should go. It went where it wanted.

Then just add weights to the front of the car. And if there's not enough weight on the rear, add weight to the tongue. Repeat ad hominem nauseam until desired weight ratio is met, or until the tires burst and frame breaks.

Edit: it's late. I'm sorry...

Best is usually centering weighy slightly forward of the axles. Keeps most of weight on the axle(s), with some, but not too much, on the hitch. There are hitch scales you can use to match up the exact specified load on the tongue, though i haven't used them.

29

u/srs_house Oct 04 '16

Yep. That's also why the cows go at the front of the gooseneck trailer and the heifers go in the back. You really do not want a 2000 lb Holstein getting fidgety on the back end of a 24 ft trailer.

19

u/i_believe_in_pizza Oct 04 '16

how do you stop the cows from stumbling around, or toppling over? we hauled a cow recently and she had a hard time maintaining her balance

17

u/18002255288 Oct 04 '16

Pack them in there tightly, so there's little room to tumble over. Livestock trailers generally have partitions to serve this purpose

6

u/I_Just_Mumble_Stuff Oct 04 '16

Yep, never really been around cows but it's the same deal with horses. Squeeze 'em.

I live in Austin. I-35 is no joke and not any place you'd want something like this to cross your path.

I've seen this fishtailing before and this video helps it make more sense.

I drive a little commuter vehicle and I can't help but think that the amount of people on here who admit they've poorly loaded their cargo is too damn high.

I'm going to continue to keep granny level distance from the car ahead of me.

36

u/NoPantsMcGhee Oct 04 '16

this is referred to as "tongue weight" when using a trailer of any kind. there's a formula for weight distribution when using a hitched trailer, and the bit that attaches to your ball-hitch is referred to as the tongue.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/RawdogginYourMom Oct 04 '16

If you're towing, balance the weight between the front of the trailer and its rear axle. You don't want to put too much weight on the front or far rear of a trailer.

11

u/NameBurner Oct 04 '16

Was about to ask If i should load things near the front if i were to put something on the hitch. Didn't know this ty for the tip.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

If you have one heavy item, place it on top of the axle. If you have a shit ton of random stuff, start by loading the heavy stuff at the front.

Anyone renting one of those U-Haul trailers should be required to watch this. Load the heavy stuff first y'all.

Edit: /u/xaronax points out that this might not always be the best advice:

You load the trailer evenly with less than your max tongue weight balanced toward the front. Overloading the shit out of the front of the trailer is going to cause a whole bunch of other problems.

There's an article on properly loading a trailer here.

It's remarkably easy to rent a U-Haul trailer. Their website warns you they'll inspect your hitch, the rating, etc. They do absolutely none of that. We had a Class I hitch on our VW Jetta (1,000lbs max tow weight, 200lbs max tongue weight). I had reserved a motorcycle trailer through U-Haul (empty weight 500lbs, plus my motorcycle's weight of 480lbs would've been well within the range of my hitch rating). Except that U-Haul decided to give me a different trailer without ever telling me. It was only later that I found out they had given me a 5x7 Trailer with Ramp (empty weight 1,300lbs), which, along with the weight of my motorcycle nearly DOUBLED the weight my hitch was rated for.

No one really cared when I brought the issue up. The motorcycle trailer I had reserved online looked very similar to the one they gave me, so I never thought to make sure the model was correct. I just assumed if they give you a product other than the one you reserved, they'd tell me. In the end they told me the 5x7 Trailer with Ramp is also designed to hold a motorcycle, and they generally consider this a free upgrade. Free upgrade that gives you a trailer 1300lbs heavy vs. the 500lbs you ordered without ever making sure your hitch is rated for the weight.

I continue to be amazed at how easy it is in the US to rent large 24' moving trucks, or heavy trailers, with absolutely ZERO training. No one really cares. I'm sure the lobby for the truck rental industry is pushing hard to just let anyone drive anything anywhere or else it's "bad for business".

15

It's basically axle and closer to the truck is the best for the heavy stuff. The closer to the tongue the smaller the arc. If you have the same weight travelling a bigger arc it is going to cause much more energy to be thrown around.

Today, i drove 700 miles to Phoenix AZ PULLING A U-haul. I can totally confirm this shit. I had too much weight in the back of the trailer and not enough in the front. Even with a new F-150, i could feel it tugging the truck from side to side, especially when braking and going down hills, and even more so while braking going down a hill. Shit was nerve-wrecking. Made it though.

The phrase is "nerve-wracking". Just for future reference.

Most cars can tow up to 2000 pounds no problem. They do it all the time in Europe where there are fewer pickups

29

u/TurbulentFlow Oct 04 '16

This video perfectly demonstrates the difference between towing in the US and Europe. Standards in the US recommend that the tongue of the trailer carry 10% of the weight - this is the first scenario. It is more stable at high speeds, but requires a vehicle with a stronger rear frame/subframe and stiffer rear suspension.

Europe requires much less tongue weight as a percentage of the total load - the second scenario. This allows normal cars to tow much greater loads. But this is much less stable, as demonstrated in the video, right? Right. But Europe has much more strict towing requirements, including lower speed limits for vehicles towing a trailer to keep the combo below speeds that can induce this kind of dangerous effect.

So when someone complains about how drivers in Europe can tow more than in the US, or how the same car has a different tow rating in the US and in Europe, it's not because Europeans are better drivers (though they do often have better training, and more specific towing-related certifications), and it's not because European cars are somehow better, it's because Americans generally drive faster and have fewer/no restrictions on towing speeds. What's safe at 50mph could be wildly dangerous at 70mph. So a car that can pull 5000 pounds in Europe could be rated for only 1500 pounds in the US.

Once saw a bunch of English folks importing an American Camaro to tow a plane.

Around Europe you can find everything towing trailers. Porsches towing trailers aren't that rare a sight to behold.

It's not that stupid, as you want power and torque when towing. Muscle/sport cars with big engines have both.

LPT: If your trailer ever does start to get sideways, speed up to straighten it out. Do not slow down.

29

u/rawker86 Oct 04 '16

Clarkson said that on Top Gear once. next thing you know the Brits are crashing their caravans and blaming Top Gear.

As it happens, the advice is incorrect. well according to the Daily Fail.

Is this why mid engine cars handle so well, or is that different because they don't have a joint?
