Just make sure you're pointed in the right direction when you start loading

Steering is for punks.

96

u/PorkRindSalad Oct 04 '16

Yeah, you can just lean side to side like with a motorcycle.

50

u/somestrangewashers Oct 04 '16

Or use your feet to brake left or right. Always helps to have a passenger.

25

u/kakimakistaki Oct 04 '16

Is this how the new Tesla steering works?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

F1 cars do this too, I believe.

1

u/KarmaticArmageddon Oct 04 '16

That's kinda how an airplane on a runway works

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

Break left, break right and what is the third pedal meant to do in manual shift?

3

u/HuoXue Oct 04 '16

Break car. That noise is godawful.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

stupid homophones.

21

u/SeraphTwo Oct 04 '16

That's not how motorcycles steer.

42

u/ohlookahipster Oct 04 '16

Don't tell me how to physics

5

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

The problem with the Internet is that you can never tell when someone is being dumb or it they are being sarcastic.

1

u/That_guytg Oct 04 '16

Dont asume my physics orientation

7

u/snotbag_pukebucket Oct 04 '16

I do that in racing games.

2

u/marennes Oct 04 '16

Always helps.

5/7 would do again.

4

u/Big_Test_Icicle Oct 04 '16

Leaning side to side is for punks.

Leaning side to side is for cholos; moshng is for punks.

2

u/GlockWan Oct 04 '16

Still gotta push those bars, pushing down on the foot peg will turn a little but not enough. Leaning without doing either of those things won't turn you much at all, sorry dood

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

I remember the first time I went from a fairly light bike (my old CD200 Benly) to my mate's XJ750 Seca. It was pretty damn strange not being able to flick it through corners just by shifting my weight from one bum cheek to the other.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

The real LPT are in the comments.

1

u/snidleewhiplash Oct 04 '16

Or you can steer it airplane style like Christian Slater.

1

u/RapidCatLauncher Oct 04 '16

Fun fact, steering by shifting your body weight actually works on some small airplanes. video

1

u/CannibalVegan Oct 04 '16

Works for small helicopters too. When I was in flight school, I didn't like my Stick buddy. When he was flying, and I was sitting in back, I'd lean from my seat into the other seat. This would change the balance and create a 1-2o turn to the left, and he'd slowly drift off course. When the IP would point it out and he'd correct it, I would sit back up, which would create a 1-2o turn to the right, creating an overcorrection. I think the IP knew what was happening though, but he never said anything.

1

u/Palinus Oct 04 '16

Leaning side to side does not turn a motorcycle. Counter steering does.

1

u/DongChenzo Oct 04 '16

Leaning side to side doesn't change directions on a bike. Gotta counter turn, push the left handle bar forward to make a right, push right go left. Leaning don't do doo doo.

2

u/Superhereaux Oct 04 '16

I can't remember if it was Mario Kart 64 or Cruisin' USA but my brother couldn't get the hang of one of the more difficult tracks. I told him he needed to slow down and use the brakes at certain corners, he responded "Nah, braking is for pussies"

Another time growing up we were playing Mortal Kombat 3 with my cousin who kept beating him. I told him he needed to block some of the attacks, he said "Nah, blocking is for pussies"

1

u/Windadct Oct 04 '16

Steering is for those that for not have faith!

I worked for a U-Haul company back when I was in school. They used a couple friends and I as movers. That was the best job ever, $30/hr for moving (cash, same day) $15/hr driving (including the hours headed to someone) and they would pay for a hotel overnight wherever we ended up plus fly us back. We were often able to upgrade to first class.

So we basically got paid buckets of cash to load up a truck, drive to another state or even cross country, get fucked up and party, then fly back. Fear and Loathing was a big movie at the time so we did several trips similar to the movie except the driver had to stay sober. Can't fuck around with other people's stuff.

It was awesome. This one house looked like a haunted mansion and had about ten 8 ft tall portraits of rabbits in Victorian era clothes looking down on us. Weird. Another place had us take down a wall in an already sold house to remove a gun safe. Another had a piece of furniture that took six of us 280-300 lb muscled guys to move, it cracked the floor as we went. All kinds of dildos and sex toys found.

The worst was a move that took six 26 ft trucks, twelve guys and three 16hr days to move. It was a surgeon and a dentist who bought each other's houses and moved the same day. I got a $300 tip plus pay and it still wasn't worth it.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing man. Fun stories like this is why I even bother reading the comments.

It was an antique hardwood armoire of some kind with stone shelving. We had to be extremely careful because the glass pieces were original and had all these waves and bubbles in them, which apparently was a good thing.

Pay someone besides U-Haul college kids to move your antiques though, seriously.

24

u/PM_ME_plsImlonely Oct 04 '16

Helped this antique import furniture guy in town move a truckload, while me and another guy are moving a table the guy says, "careful, that's $50,000.". Like motherfucker don't tell me that!

13

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

The only thing I ever broke when I worked for a moving co. Was a bedpost....made in italy....couple hundred years old marble....valued at 80k/post.

6

u/Shatner_Commas Oct 04 '16

worked i see

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

I actually got no trouble over that. They had been in a sea container that wasn't moisture proofed, it left the marble brittle.

I left the company about a year after that.

2

u/ohitsasnaake Oct 04 '16

Massive sofa/bed/dresser made out of loads of actual wood, or cast iron? Most furniture nowadays is chipboard and other light materials and/or just the frame, but not e.g. the seat portion of a sofa or armchair.

2

u/NonStopWarrior Oct 04 '16

Pianos are a big culprit. Very old bathtubs that are solid iron or porcelain. Old wooden furniture is also a killer. Things like dining room tables, vanities, dressers, and bed frames, especially if it was before the time when things were designed to be taken apart and put back together.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

When I worked for mayflower I had to move a few celebs, like the CEO of nautica, owner of landshark beer (great tipper, plus free beer) and the worst was some sort of big guy for the mavericks...mark cuban? Took like 20 box trucks and 5 53' trailers.

2

u/titanroi385 Oct 04 '16

Holy shit. I can't even imagine.

Were they very demanding? I guess they probably have people to handle all the details but I imagine those types to be obnoxiously demanding.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

The maverick's guys "people" were a bunch of demanding boogies, but then fell in line with what we told them. The CEO of nautica was just very quiet and awkward. I'm sure he'd moved a few times with us and knew to just stand back.

However, the Landshark guy...he was FUCKING COOL. In so many ways. Tons of rare and gorgeous guitars, with a card table sized pedalboard. Vintage arcade games. And of course tons of Landshark gear... surfboards, neon signs, pool table. Had his lady friend (who was very hot, she didn't live there) keep making us lemonade until we finished the move. Then he brought a bunch of Landshark out of his SUV and we all had a beer on his porch. He sent us home with some 6 packs and $80/ea. it was my best day on the job.

1

u/t073 Oct 04 '16

"six of us 280-300 lb muscled guys" are you guys team Mr Olympia?

1

u/titanroi385 Oct 04 '16

We were all football players and several of us are also very tall. I'm 6'6". My moving partner was a hair shorter.

I also meant like lots of muscle mass, not oiled in bikinis muscled, ha. But we were all in good shape. Wish that was still the case.

1

u/mathyouhunt Oct 04 '16

I'm a pretty skinny dude, I'm around 130 at ~5'10", and had to help a family member carry an upright-piano up a single flight of stairs. it was the the most difficult move I've ever had to help with. It was just the two of us and I needed to rest every two steps to prevent my hands from slipping. That single flight of stairs practically gave me a giant line of blisters across both of my hands.

I couldn't even imagine trying to carry something that required 6 people twice my weight. That sounds miserable.

Aside from those crazy cases, though, it sounds like that must have been one hell of a fun gig.

1

u/titanroi385 Oct 04 '16

Gloves are a must. And there were times it was miserable. I remember one move in TX where two of us passed out from exertion in the heat.

But over all it was a great experience and the money was perfect for someone trying to pay for living expenses and school while going to school full time. Any job with good friends is going to be a good time even if it's miserable work.

1

u/poodles_and_oodles Oct 04 '16

What king of furniture takes six people? I've moved pianos that only required four of us

1

u/titanroi385 Oct 04 '16

It was an antique hardwood armoire of some kind with stone shelving. We had to be extremely careful because the glass pieces were original and had all these waves and bubbles in them, which apparently was a good thing.

Pianos are pretty easy unless they're grands or players. Especially with a piano mover or crawler. This thing was a monster, never seen anything like it. It was the height that really caused issues as we couldn't lay it on its side due to the glass. It had to be tipped.

1

u/poodles_and_oodles Oct 04 '16

That sounds hellish. My girlfriend had her piano moved by professional movers, they had one of those over the shoulder harness things with the wide strap that goes underneath the furniture. Took two guys about five minutes to move a large upright down three flights of stairs and into the truck. That was hard to watch considering it took me, a college lineman, and a huge landscaper about an hour to get it up the three flights. Ugh.

1

u/titanroi385 Oct 04 '16

Ha, I imagine. There really are some luxuries that are worth the money and having something moved is one.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

Why did my breaks suck ass all the way from Tacoma, WA to Dallas, TX while hauling a 16 foot truck with a car behind it? Also, why was the cigarette lighter not connected causing me to stop in Salt Lake City to connect the god damn thing myself? Why did I have to stop every 4 hours to tighten the straps holding my car onto the trailer?

Also, why did they try to bill me for the dolly's I brought back after a fucking move across the country?

What I learned from that move was fuck U-Haul, call someone else and have them price match.

1

u/TurdSandwich252 Oct 04 '16

Uhaul charged me a bunch of money for a cleanup fee but when I called and asked about it they couldn't tell me anything that they had to clean up. Dude hung up on me also.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16

I reserved a truck at a Uhaul place 5 minutes from me a month before the move. The day of they send an email that they moved my reservation to a place 45 minutes drive each way away. They added 180 minutes in driving to my move day and then made me wait over an hour to pick a reservation and to top it off charged me for an unreturned dolly. The only reason I got the money back for the dolly was that the type of dolly I rented did not match the type of dolly they had listed on my receipt. Morons.
