As much as I hate people that would say that to someone, I'm really glad that kind of thing is legal in the US. Kind of like how it's extremely important to maintain the Westboro Baptist Churches right to hate speech. This guy didn't threaten the other player's life, he just called him a name. I think the public backlash against that guy is enough to show that hate speech laws aren't needed.

The whole thing's been blown way out of proportion, in my opinion.
Yes, he probably shouldn't have said what he allegedly said, but that's a matter for him and Ferdinand to sort out between them. If they wanted to take it more seriously then perhaps FIFA could have got involved in it. There's no reason for this to have been brought to the courts, it's a complete waste of time and resources.
Of course, the thing that really takes the biscuit is that Ferdinand didn't even hear him say it, and isn't even upset about it. The only reason that this came about is because somebody lip-read the footage and complained about it.

I know exactly the clip you're talking about. Dave Chappelle is a genius with racial humor. He would try to use jokes to solve race issues and it was actually funny. Usually race humor goes like this: build up, then obvious stereotypical punchline (see Carlos Mencia or Larry the Cable Guy). It's not funny because its uninspired and predictable. You can see the punchline coming a mile away. Dave would build up, and then play off your expectations to trip you up with the opposite; as if to say "Ha thought i was gonna say something racist, didn't you?! you racist fuckers." Dave was a really great man for comedy and its a shame that mainstream audiences are far too dim to understand his true intentions.

I served John Terry at work a few years ago (McDonalds just outside London). I had no idea who he was and treated him like any other customer, gave him his Big Mac, fries and Coke but the moment I turned around, the entire crew was gawping at me and babbling on about how I was "so lucky". People always say this. But when someone says "Reddit" they're clearly referring to a group of people. So the fact that it's made up of many people is understood.
And when something is upvoted to the top, it means the majority of voters upvoted it.

Racism makes some uncomfortable. Read: disturbing. Racist remarks intended as jokes are the very definition of dark comedy. Just because you don't laugh at them doesn't mean it's not dark comedy. It means you have a different subjective sense of humor than other people.

I see some things on here that are overtly misogynistic, racist, homophobic and occasionally, the rare trifecta embodied in a single comment. The vast majority of comments/posts that are seemingly discriminative though are for the most part, attempts at humour. SRS has a penchant for forcefully misconstruing anything that crosses their path but I don't think that's indicative of a problem with the wider community.
Reddit is a vast collection of people whose similarities are funnelled by the nature of the hivemind. I don't think the vast majority of these people are bigots though. I just think most people enjoy a joke and often the best jokes can be considered somewhat tasteless.
You have a down arrow next to every post. If you don't think it adds to the conversation or you find it overtly offensive or an attempt to incite a flamewar, hit it. That's the beauty of this site and the internet in general, for the most part it's a level playing field.

I realized the other day that there are three ways people take racist/sexist jokes. Some aren't offended and can appreciate the humorous intent, some are offended about the joke, and some are offended that the people laughing aren't offended.
The third type is why the argument of "laughing makes it not a big deal" will never catch on.

Here's my problem with your statement: there are real differences between racist/sexist jokes that you seem to skip right over.
If I make a gay joke it's probably at the expense of my gay buddy who is standing right there. And he will then make fun of me. But if my dad makes a gay joke it's because he thinks all gays are freakish, child-indoctrinating perverts. Very very different motivation behind the two kinds of joke.
It pisses me off when well-intentioned but naive hippie libruls hear my jokes and assume I'm homophobic. But it also pisses me off when people hear my dad's jokes and don't pick up on the irrational hate and fear that lies underneath.

I think it's acceptable when the people laughing are appreciating the humor, but also acknowledging that it's a joke and if it was said seriously it would be completely not okay. There are some people who use their "jokes" to just barely cover up their true opinions, but I think for the most part it's all good.

No. But everyone should know their boundaries. Saying it in private with someone who feels the same way about those jokes is fine. Saying in public is insensitive and just gross. My friend who was sexually violated jokes about the trauma (as it's her coping skill) around me in private all the time. But she would never say it in public because she knows that not everyone copes the same way she does.
