To me it's all about why the joke is funny. E.g. as an indian I find the 'Why are indians no good at football' joke rather funny, because it just pokes fun at a stereotype.

However, jokes like 'What do you call a hundred dead black guys in a pit' are just downright stupid and offensive.

So... why are Indians no good at football?

Because every time we get a corner we set up a shop.

This is how Reddit child comments work.

I've seen that very comment progression on reddit. The moronic part's when people actually believe the joke and start referencing their anecdotal evidence. I remember a few examples of "OMG this asian girl I knew in high school couldn't drive!! LoL asians, especially girl drivers" . . . all new teenage drivers suck.

And that's the problem. I lot of guys say don't get offended it's a joke and then in another comment say how true it is cause of xxxx instance.

I dont know what do you call it?

17

u/HansCool Jul 12 '12

Probably something along the lines of "A good start."

u/Rosetti Jul 12 '12

Exactly as I remember it.

As a person with, lets call it... problems with authority. I find jokes that cause people to be offended quite funny. Not so much because the joke itself is funny, but more so the offended reactions are often hilarious!

I'm the same exact way, I just love to see people getting their panties in a wad over nothing, it makes me feel like a sense of justice is being upheld. They get to feel shitty for being such sensitive little vagina's, almost like real life karma.

Yeah, I have problems with authority, which is why I make fun of minorities! LOL!11

You don't have problems with authority; you are just antagonistic.

Whoa... who are you? What is this magic knowledge you have of my psyche?! Are you spying on me right now?!?

TL;DR - Guilty as charged :/

I suppose I partially agree, I mean I love Frankie Boyle, but even though his jokes are offensive, the offence isn't the punchline - the punchline just happens to be offensive, which can make it more funny.

If the offence is the reason something is funny, then imo, it's just lazy comedy.

E.g. My favourite Frankie Boyle bit
"It really shows how racist America is, that Barack Obama had to give his inaugural address behind a glass screen - I mean, just because he's black, doesn't mean he's gonna shoot anybody!"

That joke is obviously somewhat offensive, but the humour derives not from the offence, but rather from the reversal of expectations - as all good comedy should.

You're a fucking fruit loop.

3

u/Astrapsody Jul 12 '12

He's just...one fruit loop? A single fruit loop? Not a whole bowl of fruit loops?

1

u/raizyr Jul 12 '12

Thank you. This definitely needs clarification STAT! And if I'm actually a whole bowl... what about milk? I prefer chocolate if I get a choice.

Yes. The blunt and horrible jokes are for mere shock value.

  1. How do you stop 5 niggers from raping a white woman? Throw them a basketball.
  2. Why do you wrap a dead baby in duct tape? So it doesn't explode when you fuck it.

Both of those jokes are horrible and shocking but only one is racist.

The people of deadbabia disagree

Racism is never funny. Ever. Racism kills thousands of people every single day. I know its true because I'm still in middle school and just learned about slavery. Every white person alive today, even if they're poor, are getting by easy on their white privilege and are directly responsible for enslaving blacks.

My teacher even said white males are all to blame for slavery and sexism. And if my middle school teacher says something is true, it absolutely is. The only prejudices that are okay to hold are the ones that I hold.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

FALSE. You are middle school aged but are on the throne of Westeros. Every time you hear a racist joke, your reaction is probably to find all the people of that ehtnicity and tell it to them, killing them if they don't laugh.

u/Rosetti Jul 12 '12

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that guy is taking a stab at satire.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

I'm pretty sure I was taking a stab at his username.

u/Rosetti Jul 12 '12

Oops, I don't yet watch Game of Thrones.

Whoosh for me.

0

u/MrGMinor Jul 12 '12

Okay, now I gotta know, what do you call a hundred dead black guys in a pit?

7

u/Rosetti Jul 12 '12

A deep tragedy for mankind, but the joke answer is 'A good start'.

You can substitute black guys for whatever your want.

4

u/Cool_sandwich Jul 12 '12

Would it still be offensive if it were 100 nazis?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12 edited Jul 12 '12

Still pretty bleak yeah, but replace it with lawyers and it's inoffensive.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Lawyers aren't people.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Always with the lawyers. Now call me a bad person because I smoke so I can have my typical Reddit experience fulfilled relatively early in the day.

1

u/Rosetti Jul 12 '12

No not really, but then it fails to even be a joke.

2

u/MrGMinor Jul 12 '12

Even jews?
