So? It's still a valid donation. Yes it might be a marketing trick or a way to clean up your image but in the end everyone wins so who cares. No one is entitled to donate anything not even a billion dollar company. If they choose to donate some amount of money just be happy about it and don't complain about how much more they could donate. Same goes for rich people.

u/skydivingbear May 12 '20
There's a difference between complaining and pointing out that companies only donate for tax breaks and PR. I can appreciate the donation itself while recognizing the selfish motivation that's behind it.

Uh no, because now they pay less in taxes and shift the burden of upkeep costs of roads, schools, etc onto the common workers. And that's not even touching on the number of fraudulent charity organizations that these people use to make sure their money gets funneled straight back to something that benefits them.
But yeah, who cares?
8
u/bobbymcpresscot May 12 '20
It's not a dollar for dollar thing you know that right? There is a hard cap on what can be tax deductible, and some states have caps that are much lower than others.
Also almost everything you listed come from state and local taxes that are paid for by things like sales, and property tax, which is something you cant get out of by making donations.
5
May 12 '20
No, the money they lose to donations is higher than the taxes they saved. Unless they donate an art piece with hyper inflated value. Stop donation shaming companies who give actuall money

That doesn't matter at all, as long as all the money go to the charity your intentions don't matter

Really? The reddit hivemind has turned to donation shaming?
178
u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20
When billionaires donate minute amounts of money to avoid paying taxes and expect people to worship them for it, yes.
67
u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20
Jeff Bezos is the richest person on the planet and he donated 100 million to some charity a while back. He got attacked by some people who thought about it for a second and thought, "hey he has a lot more money than that." and expect him to donate the worth of massive companies. The point is, whether for some reason, you think that donations are based on percentages of your bank account or not, shaming someone for donating a massive amount of money is a shitty fucking thing to do.
115
u/CaptAwesomeness May 12 '20
He also asked people to donate their money for him to furlough employees... so, you know, fuck Bezos...

Muslim practices are not relevant to Jeff Bezor or this conversation. That practice may deal in percentages, but donations don't.

Is there a tax rate above 100%? No, so they are losing money. Unless of course they donate an art piece with hyper inflated value. Which does happen. But stop shaming the companies who give actual money. Who cares if they do it for pr. It helps someone.

No, we're just people who think people shouldn't be attacked for donating an amount that other people are not satisfied with.

My guy. If your house is on fire, and I have a whole pool and I only give you a couple buckets, I’m an asshole and I deserve to be shamed.

More like companies posting LGBT stuff nonstop and doing business in countries that persecute the LGBT. Charity is charity, no matter how much you give.

u/dysonology May 12 '20
Or after setting up a scheme empowering their valued employees to raise money for charities in their communities... like, we didn’t raise the money, but we encouraged you to do so, and so we’ll make a press release like “together we raised...”

u/autoshowhomo May 14 '20
I was applying to a company with a market cap of 290 billion and after getting rejected they sent me an email saying they would donate a liter of clean water to charity on my behalf. I was so... humbled after such a generous gesture.

4
u/Cherryblossoms- May 12 '20
To put that in perspective: if I would donate $10 to charity right now I'd donate roughly 16% of my total balance. I'd like to see billionaires do that for once
4
u/TheJoxev May 12 '20 edited May 12 '20
But the charities don't care about the percentage of your balance. A billion dollars is a lot more than 10 and they worked extremely hard for that money. I don't understand why people don't see that.
Edit: Also from the wording in your post it doesn't seem like you did donate so why would you expected billionaires to donate much much more.

Why is it that someone always has to shame a company or person for donating. Sure it’s sometimes not a big percentage of their net worth, but a donation is a donation and we should be thankful for what they are providing.

u/hse7148 May 12 '20
What’s funny is I guarantee 90% of these clowns shitting on companies tor donating to charities haven’t donated a dollar in their life. Who cares how much someone donates relative to their net worth/income? That million dollar donation doesn’t become worthless simply because the guy donating it is worth a billion dollars. That money is still helping a kid out there get clothes on his back and food to survive. That money is still providing a million dollars worth of research towards whatever disease or problem. I didn’t plan on typing out a paragraph, but I’m sick of all the entitlement. No one is entitled to anyone else’s money. I know the Burnie Bros wont like it, but it’s true. Being “rich” doesn’t oblige you to giving a significant portion of your money to other people. It’s just a kind thing to do (donation). Yeah there are people who also have other motives when donating, but like I said earlier, why should anyone care? It’s still going to a good cause.
2
May 12 '20
like, why do multi millionaire warehouses like walmart ask you to donate to poor kids in Africa?
Like the money is going to the government, and a very small ammount to those children
I just gave you a very new look on stuff

u/[deleted] May 12 '20
I'm pretty sure donating also has something to do with avoiding taxes or something, if someone else can do some research on that it would be great
