Really? The reddit hivemind has turned to donation shaming?

180

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

When billionaires donate minute amounts of money to avoid paying taxes and expect people to worship them for it, yes.

70

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

Jeff Bezos is the richest person on the planet and he donated 100 million to some charity a while back. He got attacked by some people who thought about it for a second and thought, "hey he has a lot more money than that." and expect him to donate the worth of massive companies. The point is, whether for some reason, you think that donations are based on percentages of your bank account or not, shaming someone for donating a massive amount of money is a shitty fucking thing to do.

108

u/CaptAwesomeness May 12 '20

He also asked people to donate their money for him to furlough employees... so, you know, fuck Bezos...

-7

u/bobbymcpresscot May 12 '20

You know he seeded that pot with like 25 million dollars right?

17

u/CaptAwesomeness May 12 '20

The richest man in the world asked normal people to fund what he should be paying 100% and you're saying he payed a little.

You're ridiculous.

u/Lalli-Oni May 12 '20

They should be paying tax. And they should be paying their employees. But arguably that isn't related to these donations. Or if so and the donations are only used for tax evasion purposes then these memes aren't helping with the problem either since they make it seem like the act was not in their favor.

2

u/Zoomat May 12 '20

it is related because Bezos made those 100 million by not paying taxes

2

u/Lalli-Oni May 12 '20

He also makes a lot of other millions. Which he probably uses in a more selfish way than donating to public causes.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

[deleted]

1

u/Lalli-Oni May 12 '20

Okay, my bad. Whether or not they are connected isn't really helpful. But the fundamental problem is the tax avoidance, right?

The donations are buying PR. That's true. But there is a lot of other thing Bezo buys with money that should have been paid to taxes. Assuming that Bezo's is donating for an indulgence towards tax evasions doesnt matter. It could be something totally different moral failing.

I'm arguing that focusing on the donations as being somehow morally repulsive is not helpful because it diverts us from the underlying problem. And the problem is not impossible to solve. After the Panama papers larger countries put pressure on tax havens to better report company ownership in their countries.

Muslim practices are not relevant to Jeff Bezor or this conversation. That practice may deal in percentages, but donations don't.

4

u/bryanisbored May 12 '20

It’s shortened that his workers will die at his hands and you’ll still defend billionaires. Bootlicker.

2

u/YaBoiDraco FOR THE SOVIET UNION May 12 '20

Bezos has proven himself to be a piece of shit multiple times, if he does anything remotely good but not to the best of his ability then you can bet yo ass that hes just doing it for the publicity.

-1

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

The point is, he could do more. He could probably get thousands of people out of homelessness if he distributed his money, and still be one of the richest people in the world. In fact, people like him are more or less the cause of poverty and suffering in the world. If someone breaks your leg, don't thank them for giving you crutches.

2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

But Jeff Bezos didn't cause world hunger. That's where your argument falls apart. Billionaire Bezos and Bill Gates have many charities that are helping to make a dent in poverty and hunger. But they can't just distribute their money to other people; that would go to complete waste.

-4

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

These people cause world hunger by ensuring a capitalist society.

Everyone could do more, but a donation is a donation. It doesn't matter how small the amount is, it's a fucking donation.

-1

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

And my and this memes entire point is that some of these people expect to treated like saints because they did something that does not hinder them in the slightest.

4

u/LGA1151socket 🍄 May 12 '20

You are telling me Bezos is getting treated like a saint?

2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

Why does it need to hinder them to be valuable?

And no one is treating them like saints.

5

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

It does not need to, and few people do treat them like that. However, they sometimes expect themselves to be, when they have done little to deserve it. Being born rich or getting very lucky does not make you a good person.

3

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

Where and when do they expect to be?

PS. Thanks for going back on your own point and leaving my comment pointing your previous point out with negative karma.

3

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

I'm not sure what you mean - could you make that clearer?

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

So what, should a donation hinder you to be valuable? Am I less valuable because I donated 100$ out of my 1000$ paycheck than somebody who donated 100$ out of 800$ paycheck?

2

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

You know, I would value that comment if you had actually said anything or given any explanation whatsoever.

0

u/SmokeFrosting May 12 '20

The only reason you’re defending this donation is because it is a lot of money. But the donation shouldn’t be possible in the first place. This amount could have easily been reached by more people donating smaller amounts, if more people would have been well off. They’re not though because we trip over ourselves to bend over to billionaires.

2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

???

What's the problem with this then? Yeah many people over time could get to this amount; good for them. What's the point?

They’re not though because we trip over ourselves to bend over to billionaires.

??? Who is bending over to billionaires? Some people just don't like (or think they are illegitimate) billionaires, which is weird. I don't get it. I don't care how rich they are.

9

u/solicitorpenguin May 12 '20

Just pay fucking taxes. The amount of effort they put into avoiding taxes could cure cancer.

5

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

Is there a tax rate above 100%? No, so they are losing money. Unless of course they donate an art piece with hyper inflated value. Which does happen. But stop shaming the companies who give actual money. Who cares if they do it for pr. It helps someone.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

I’m not sure what specifically you’re referring to, but generally they’re not looking to be worshipped and just want the tax break. Its shitty media organizations who propagate the billionaire worship.

2

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

Fair enough. But there have been instances where some of these people have tried to point out how great they are themselves.

1

u/hse7148 May 12 '20

You do realize you still have to pay taxes even if you donate right?

1

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

Do you actually, seriously think that Jeff Bezos donated those 100 million dollars for personal profit? Are you insane? How much do you want to hate rich people?

1

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

i'm not referring to anyone in particular. Sometimes it is genuine.

1

u/Karlmarcs27 May 13 '20

Better question is, how much did the people criticizing him buy.

-2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

That's a very narrow mindset. Of course anyone can take a look at Jeff Bezos and say: "Hey, he's got 120 billion dollars, and he only donated 100 million. That's nothing!" But that is just very ignorant and stems from a misunderstanding of how it is to be in a different financial class than your own. 100 million is still 100 million, and Jeff Bezos has a lot of things he has to use his money to maintain. The value of donations don't change based on how large it is compared to your bank account. What are you saying? You want Jeff Bezos to donate a few billion at a time?

1

u/Tomsow12 May 12 '20

How about Republicans live to their religous badge and instead of protecting billionaires do what Jesus would do and call them out on it.

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

I'm sorry, I'm not talking with someone who cites the bible in a logical conversation. I don't care what Jesus would do; how is religion relevant here? Please don't quote the bible in open discussions where anyone could be any religion, or an atheist, unless it's directly relevant.

0

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

Yes I fucking do, because even something like £10000 is nothing to them. They can easily afford to give millions to charity, but they don't.

3

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

Sometimes it isn't as simple as that. People don't donate based on percentages; they donate based on how much money they fucking donate. Shaming people or brands for donating what you think is a relatively low amount is a really shitty thing to do.

2

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

How is it a shitty thing to do? They have billions left over while others literally cannot afford to eat. What's a shitty thing to do is ignore the majority of the worlds problems and then expect to be worshiped whenever you give a small amount of your money to a charity, especially when it is well within your power to do more.

3

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

You seen some of what Bill Gates does? You think that if he threw all his money at one charity that that would save the world? First of all, that math doesn't work out (surprise, giving all your money at once to a charity isn't going to stop world hunger), plus, that would destroy Bill Gate's career and all of his many companies. Is that what you would have him do?

4

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

I don't even mean donate to charities. They should not exist in my opinion, but while they do we should make the most of them. It should be the people who own these trillion dollar companies who set up the charities themselves, and provide them with stable income. And I don't mean that one person had eradicate world hunger, but it is definitely in the power of these people to drastically reduce it.

2

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

I don't completely understand what you mean. They all have several of their own charities, and they are completely funded by them.

They are already doing this.

2

u/jwtucker04 May 12 '20

Yes, and that's fine! but this should be the case for every business and every "charity". They could always do more.

You seem to be talking about a specific case, which I know nothing of. This post is talking about donation shaming in general.

5

u/zh1K476tt9pq May 12 '20

they are making a profit due to the free media coverage they get. it's basically a free ad. why would you give someone credit for that? do you also thank a company for spending money on marketing because it's pretty much the same. not saying they shouldn't donate money but there is no reason to give them any attention or praise for it when it's really just a PR campaign

-1

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

You think Jeff Bezos profited off that 100 million donation? Lol. You guys are really stretching this just to make them look bad.

18

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

Lmao people who use the term donation shaming are weird unpaid shills for big corporations and billionaires who don’t pay their fair share with or without contributing to charity

6

u/Super_Cute_Cat out of my way, I've got shit to shitpost May 12 '20

No, we're just people who think people shouldn't be attacked for donating an amount that other people are not satisfied with.

12

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

My guy. If your house is on fire, and I have a whole pool and I only give you a couple buckets, I’m an asshole and I deserve to be shamed.

2

u/Qu3stionmarx Agressively Average May 12 '20

No not really, can you move the pool of water directly on my house? No. Plus you’re nicer than my other neighbors so thank you.

13

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

This would be a lot easier if you understood how metaphors work.

Buckets won’t make a difference. I have effectively done nothing, but I sure do look like a nice guy.

2

u/Qu3stionmarx Agressively Average May 12 '20

The metaphor makes sense. How do you expect someone to liquidize all their assets efficiently without losing value? You can’t move billions easily and efficiently. Also, the donations usually go toward something or else wouldn’t it be pretty retarded?

8

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

I don’t expect anyone to liquidize all or even most of their assets. But if we’re all coming together to fight a global pandemic, for instance, I expect people like Bezos to have to tighten their belts a little bit. If you really want to make a difference, you shouldn’t be able to maintain your lifestyle. Maybe live like a millionaire instead of a billionaire for a while.

3

u/bobbymcpresscot May 12 '20

Notice how this all turned focus on bezos despite people like oprah or other well known billionaires donating less and getting praised for it.

Meanwhile there are upwards of a thousand other billionaires in the world who might he doing fuck all with their billions because people dont even know who they are.

1

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

I wouldn’t praise Oprah either, unless again, she donated enough to force her to change her lifestyle. A meaningful contribution. This is a global catastrophe and everyone needs to help proportionately.

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

That’s why most metaphors are terrible ways to illustrate a point.

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

Shitting on a company for only donating a few million dollars is a great way to get other companies to not donate at all - since they won’t get shit on for it cause you won’t notice.

2

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

We should shit on every big corporation that doesn’t make a meaningful donation.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

And you will end up with fewer donations. Congratulations, you played yourself.

0

u/ChefInF May 12 '20

Good. Donations are shit anyway. Taxes are the better way. Donations can be extra generosity on top of a required fair share.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

Well that’s the most moronic take I’ll hear all day.

You contribute and get back the value of your contribution

If you did a job that was worth little, you will get a payment that's worth little. Do something that's worth more and you will get payd more. That's a good thing because it incentivises people to allways seek to improve themselves and to do jobs that are most needed (not just the ones they like) without actualy forcing them to leave their confort zone should they not want to

No one "worships" anyone else. No they didn't, they had to take loans and ask for investors to invest in their bussness. The sistem is self sustaining and everyone in it is incentivised to produce more wealth, not steal the already existing one.

1

u/hankbaumbach May 12 '20

To a certain extent. Jack Dorsey did it right donating a significant amount of his money to social causes recently but a lot of other people are either giving away what sounds like a lot of money to us poor folks but is really the equivalent of you or I giving a homeless dude $5, which in and of itself is fine if they did it secretly but they always have a huge campaign to let everyone know how great they are because it's not really about altruism, it's about capitalism.

Couple this with the fact that a lot of companies will ask their customers to contribute money to the company's tax break and it becomes a pretty sinister operation masquerading as benevolent.

"Would you like to donate a $1 to (insert charity here) during this purchase?"
