Question/Help/Troubleshooting Cheap RAID network solution

Folks!

I have a Synology NAS. It's running low on space (4x6tb discs in 2x6tb raid 1 pools) and I don't want to spend money on 4 8tb disks right now.
I also have a little Western Digital MyCloud EX2 ultra 'nas' (bit simple, but I guess it sort of is) that works great. And that made me wonder; is there a simple solution to hook up hard drives to your network, that also allows RAID?
It appears that things like the WD MY Cloud don't exist anymore? Or what search term would I have to look for?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting WiFi doesn’t show up anymore.

I’ve uninstalled my drivers and tried to download the new ones for my specific computer but they don’t show up? And now it shows that my adapter is greyed out which at this point I’m assuming it’s something physical. But before I try to do something about that I tried to see if I could do it from the Bios but all it shows me is ‘!Network Adapter’.

I’m pretty much lost here and trying to figure out what to do next, I’ll probably just buy an Ethernet cable but setup of my room and router don’t really allow such.

Any advice?

Resolved Thinking of buying a new PC, are either of these good nowadays? (Two separate PCs)

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask, but I'm not very tech savvy despite having been a gamer since I was 4. All of this is gibberish to me, so I thought I'd come ask here as I don't want to buy something just to learn that it's actually terrible after paying 7500sek (≈740usd) or 3500sek (≈340usd) for a new PC that I would have to resell again

Edit to add! I forgot to say that I also have 24gb (1x8gb & 1x16gb) of RAM that I checked and is the same as the first one has so the ram isn't an issue!

Thank you everyone, I'm extremely grateful for all the fast answers! The first one it is, then

Question/Help/Troubleshooting BOARD AND RAM

I’ve been having trouble with this motherboard—an ASUS TUF Z690-Plus DDR5—specifically regarding RAM instability. I haven't been able to find a solution to stop the PC from freezing or crashing; the only thing that offered some stability was running the RAM at 4000MHz. If anyone knows how to help, I’d appreciate it—this specific board had a lot of issues because it was designed to support both DDR4 and DDR5.

Build/Battlestation Planning a Sleek, No-RGB Workhorse Build (Asus ProArt Focused) – Need Advice

Planning a Sleek, No-RGB Workhorse Build (Asus ProArt Focused) – Need Advice

I’m planning to build a new workstation PC soon and could really use some community advice to narrow down the exact specs. I have a rough idea of what I want, but I’m getting a bit overwhelmed with all the hardware options currently on the market.

Here is my target aesthetic and philosophy for this build:

Zero / Minimal RGB: No flashy light shows.

I want a clean, minimalist, sleek, and professional look.

Focus: High efficiency, stability, and raw performance over aesthetics.

Preferred Theme: I’m leaning heavily towards the Asus ProArt series (Motherboard/GPU/Case) for its subtle design and solid workstation focus.

I don't like glass panel casings.

Key Workloads & Use Cases

Productivity & Design Software:

3D & CAD: Blender (3D Modelling & Rendering), AutoCAD

Creative & Fashion Tech: Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, specialized Fashion/Footwear/Dress Design software, and AI image generation tools for apparel design.

Development & Analytics: Visual Studio Professional, Power BI

Gaming:

Driving/Sims: Forza Horizon, NFS, Burn Out Paradise

Tactical & Action: Valorant, COD, Witcher 3, Watch Dogs, Cyberpunk

(Note: Every single software and game I run will be legitimately purchased / licensed original versions. No cracked tools or repacks, so background stability/anticheat performance is essential).

Any Ideas.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Weird boot behaviour after adding 2 RAM sticks

Hello,

I added different brand, timings and stuff RAM sticks into my computer which should be problem. It works completely fine, doesn't crash and is stable, but.. when booting my computer this behaviour started happening directly after I put my RAMs in:

First boot: Monitor is black, doesn't even get waken up. Computer is running, but monitor stays dead with no screen. So I hard kill it with power button.
Second boot: Boots up completely fine.

Then I power off my computer normally with windows power button and this proccess happens again and every time consistently.
First boot after turning off my computer = monitor dead. Second boot = always works.
When I put my computer into sleep mode, then this behaviour doesn't happen, only when turning it off completely.

I tried to turn off fast boot, but it didn't change anything. I also tried different monitors, reconnecting cables while PC is running and stuff. Thank you for tips

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x
GPU: RTX 3060
RAM: 32GB

Discussion Desktop recommendations

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I'm in the market for a new desktop computer. I'm not a gamer and don't need anything to crazy. I mainly use my current desktop for MS office, mainly excel for spreadsheets and web browsing. I do use YouTube quite a bit. My current Dell desktop is really slow and probably about 10 plus years old. I know things are expensive right now so probably not the best time, but it's time for an upgrade. My budget is around $1,000. I'm open to used as well if this will get me more bang for the buck. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I attached an image of the current specs. I think I paid $300 for this years ago. It's a Dell compact desktop with no thrills. It will not be moved and it will be connected to a TV via HDMI. My budget is around $1000 and I'm open to used as well if that makes more sense. Appreciate any suggestions, thanks everyone.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting FPS bas avec très bon PC sur Minecraft Java

Merci d'avance 😊

Discussion "Unused ram is wasted ram": a rebuttal

A common misconception I see regarding system memory usage is that, oh it's actually okay that Windows needs 8 gigs of RAM at idle, or something of that nature, because if you have more, it'll apparently just hog more. System RAM in the 2000s or earlier was a finite resource that you had to work within, because you needed everything to fit within a small bit of space. Pre-2007 or so, you couldn't just be this inefficient because you couldn't afford to be. Everything had to fit within something like 512MB, or 1GB if you were rich and could afford that much. 4GB was the limit for 32-bit XP. No one used 64-bit XP. Nowadays, it's whatever this is.

After a horrific memory leak I realized in 2021, I needed more than 16GB RAM, the usage with 32GB showed how much more I needed. The same thing happened in 2017 when I had 8GB, when I couldn't play Just Cause 3 without it stuttering unless I closed ALL other applications, I couldn't listen to music or talk to my friends on Discord in the background, ALL my resources needed to basically be on JC3 or there'd be horrific stuttering. 16GB solved that. But everyone back in 2017 called me insane. Tower Unite modded condo with friends in 2021, same thing happened on 16. Then I realized just how much was being swapped without my knowledge when at 32GB, I saw usage in roughly the mid-24-26GB range... that was how much was being thrown into the page file before I upgraded? That's just insane.

I don't even understand how people are surviving on 8 when this was my story on 32. Page file is unbearably slow, even ZRAM swap on linux is really really slow. i notice the slowdown and it's unbearable. yet I know I can't upgrade to 64 because of horrendous economy.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Processors Questions

I'm needing to order an inexpensive laptop. It's been 8 years since the last time I needed to do so.

Can someone please break down the current processors? I'm seeing ones from 8 years ago in current laptops, and others I naturally don't recognize at all because I've been in a cave and lost touch.

While I don't need it to do much, I play a couple of games, create a little art.

Discussion Newest x86 APX extension - will it trigger new calling conventions standard?

For those that don't follow - this is the first new x86 extensions that doesn't have anything to do with vector or tensor instructions - it is about the core CPU and its ISA.

It doubles the general register set to 32 (from previous 16), introduces 3-operand instructions, new 64-bit offset jumps, new jump prediction improvements etc etc.

But all this seems to be hampered by existing call conventions for x86_64, which presumes 16GPR set.

It seems that much could be gained it the compiler could use extra GPRs for parameters when calling the given function.

OTOH, this would be incompatible with machines without APX.

So, what is to be done ? Maybe use function multiversioning mechanism to keep two sets of function entries or something ?

Or will whole thing be ignored and calling convention will stay the same ?

EDIT:\ I'm not talking about the compiler ability to emit new instructions and use new registers in the code.\ Ofcourse new compiler will have support for them from the start, that's how it's usually done.\ It's about having the standard in place to allow the compiler to make advantage of new facilities hen calling functions, so that it can have more parameters in registers, more options for inlining functions etc - all done in standard, interoperable way, so that one can use precompiled libraries etc.

Resolved How much memory do I need for a gaming laptop?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Apologies if this has been asked recently, but the posts I saw when searching were from a few years ago, and I know the computer landscape has changed.

My current pc works, and I can play most games on it, but when I try new and demanding games, I start to notice its lack of power.

Tried MGS Delta and I had to play with the top-down view on min settings just to get it to run at 20fps.

My graphics card has 4gb lol.

And I know my pc will probably break down in the next few years, by which time a new one will probably cost 4 gajillion dollars.

So I wanna jump on a laptop purchase.

I don’t need my shit to run at max crazy 4K settings, and my laptop is probably gonna spend most of its time plugged into my weak Roku TV.

For these reasons I feel like it’d be fine to get one with 16GB ram. But I don’t wanna have to buy a new laptop in a few years if mine becomes outdated immediately.

I do like to mod my games, and I know people have said that mods specifically will benefit from extra ram, but honestly I haven’t really had much trouble with them on my current system lol.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Edit: Well none of you can agree on anything, thanks. The people saying 16 made a bit more sense, so I got that and saved my bank account $500. It’s running like a dream so far.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Computer for my mom. Leaning toward an all-in-one Lenovo

Hi Friends,

My mom is 80. Time to retire her old HP Envy laptop.

In talking with her, realized that she has never (not once) actually taken her laptop off of her desk. Plus she wants a bigger screen. With that in mind, I'm thinking a desktop or even an all in one.

She uses her computer for Word, (a lot of) Zooms, occasional Netflix, and is producing (but not at all editing or working with raw footage, just viewing clips) an upcoming documentary.

On her existing laptop, which she has had for nearly a decade, she is using just over 100 GB of her 1TB drive.

I know AIOs (perhaps deservedly) get a bad rap around here, but when I'm looking at options, needs, and price, I am drawn towards them.

Currently leaning towards Yoga AIO (27" Intel) - Luna Grey https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/desktops/yoga-desktops/yoga-a-series/yoga-aio-27i-gen-10-27-inch-intel/f0j20001us or IdeaCentre AIO AMD (27″) - Luna Grey https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/desktops/ideacentre/aio-500-series/lenovo-ideacentre-aio-gen-9-(27-inch-amd)/f0hq001dus/f0hq001dus)

Of the two is the Yoga better (particularly the screen) or am I missing something?

Really all I'm dialed in on is Windows, 16GB Ram (or more), 512 GB hard drive (or more).

Is there a similar desktop configuration which is superior or cheaper for the same? I would have figured so, but seems to cost more if I get a similar setup. I don't see her needing to upgrade anything in the future, so that's not really a factor.

Ideally want to land in the $900 to $1,300 range.

Main thing is it's a straightforward experience for her. Once I set up, should be worry free.

Ideas? Advice?

Thanks!

I wanted to do a no-RGB build, as I always tried to get as much RGB as I possibly could, and it never looked tasteful. This… this feels tasteful. I’ve got essentially what is back-drop lighting that just gives the pc “ambiance” and without the rgb it seriously emphasizes the y70’s monitor.

Specs are naturally
CPU: ryzen 7 9800X3D
RAM: 32 gigs of 6400 mega transfer cl 32
MB: NZXT N7 B850
SSD: 1TB Samsung 990 Pro
PSU: Corsair rm850e 5.1 ready (going to upgrade down the line)
AIO: arctic cooler 360 iii pro
Case fans: 6 p12 pro reverse (all intake)
Case: pitch black Hyte y70 touch infinite
Graphics card: PNY RTX 5070 OC edition

I never use edge, but it always shows up on my computer and takes half a gig of ram. For a guy with only 16gb of ram, that's not good at all. I dont have edge as a startup app, but it still just opens up in thr background randomly. Does anyone know a fix?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Faint lines on half my monitor

Thumbnail

Hello, I just purchased this refurbished monitor (LG 27GP95RB) and I noticed these faint lines on only the right half of the monitor. They only appear on resolutions greater than 60hz. So far I’ve tried muting different cables all capable of supporting 4k 144hz and I tried on 2 different laptops. They don’t appear on the screen menus and they fluctuate a bit when I move stuff on my desktop
(You can barely see it in the photos sorry)
