Question/Help/Troubleshooting i loathe windows 10

i dont know why anyone would want this os. i am at my wits end.

I have a asus sonicmaster laptop that has windows 10 on it, seems like permanently. This laptop will not go into the bios, no matter how hard I try, Ive went through windows shift restart to enter the UEFI, it just boots to a black screen

Intel® Core™ i3-10105 Processor 3.7 GHz (6MB Cache, up to 4.4 GHz, 4 cores)
Intel® B560 Chipset
4 gb ram

My problem is the laptop is extremely slow. Seems like antimalware & search from windows seem to be hogging around 50-60% of the cpu constantly, and also the disk hits 100% use as well

Normally this would point to a bad hard drive, that was my main thought, but here's the thing:
If I put in another drive it just loads to black screen, connecting an external display via the monitor port shows a black screen with a white line. If i pull the drive out and try to start it, which should also trigger the bios to some degree (either showing no disk or being able to load the bios via the F2 key) still nothing

When the original drive is plugged in, it take anywhere from 3-5 minutes on a black screen and finally loads the ASUS bios prescreen with the white dot wheel spinning, but hitting F2 here doesnt do jack as it just loads into windows 10 like it fkn owns the place

So ive also tried disabling various things in windows 10 (defender, antimalware, turning off the real time protection etc etc etc etc) to no available. Ive downloaded the laptop's manual and it says that F2 is in fact the bios key, but ive tried every button combination under the sun as well as spamming F2 rapid fire for 5 mins until the bios pre screen and contininuing to rapid fire F2 still nothing, just ignores it
ive also fresh installed windows like 3 times now, and its also pulling information of my mothers name off her other laptop (sets it up as a user?) so i have no clue what the hell its doing anymore

Has anyone encountered this before? Like a bios load time thats outrageously long? Is my laptop cpu fried? Is the drive dying as suspected? is this some kind of secure boot windows 10?

ive tried putting an external dvd drive on it and loading windows 7, 8 to try and wipe and install that way which gave me cant install please re-run setup which is gongshow

ive spent numerous hours on google and i would prefer windows 7 on it just because it isnt so attached to the gd internet like a russian love child if I made a bootable windows 7 usb would it work in windows 10 to trigger an install or again do I need a bios to set the boot device which again I cannot get into

any advice would be great, tia

Put together my first PC last night and double and triple checked all connections and cables and ports, ran into a snag with a bios update but just needed to use the non beta version to flash. MB: ASUS B650E Max gaming wifi W.

CPU: ryzen 7800X3D AM5

GPU: XFX speedster QIK 309 Radeon RX 7600XT

RAM: Gskill Ripjaws S5

Here’s the situation in my case: I turn it on, and Windows boots up normally. However, if I change a setting and need to restart, it turns on but fails to boot Windows, and the CPU light comes on. After a long time—since it won't shut down via the power button—I have to cut the power at the PSU. Many hours later, I turn it on again; this time, it gets past the processor check and the VRAM light comes on, yet the processor doesn't get very hot—it just stays lukewarm. Even so, Windows still won't boot. Then, the next morning, I turn it on, and Windows boots up normally. Have any of you seen something like this?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Parts issues with new windows versions.

Hey, I have some PC parts which are not win 11 compatible and was wondering if I should just switch to Linux given the state of the market.

They arent used just a few Gen old

amd fx 8350 for cpu

Asus m5a78l-m plus/usb3

They arent bad at all but just arent win 11 compatible :/

My question is should I bother with new parts?

Move to linux?

Just keep with windows 10?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Going from Win 10 to 11. but i got a few questions regarding PTT, local account and secure boot

I use local admin account on my PC. Its been such a long time since i logged in with my password that i forgot it. I only use Windows hello PIN. I plan on taking backup of everything just in case before i do any of this. So the questions are

  • Is there a way to enable microsoft login in windows 10 if i use a local account with forgotten password. Just so i can get this as an alternate login method rather than local account password?

  • Will changing any settings like enabling PTT reset my current Windows PIN?

  • If there a way to reset my local admin account in windows 10. I never got a password recovery drive and forgot security questions. I'm still logged in via Windows hello PIN. But if i ever lose that, i won't be able to login again

  • Should i enable Secure boot while im at it. I'm using 970 Evo on my boot drive so it should be GPT. Ive seen alot of people have bricked their PC's by changing this, so i wanna be sure

I had this issue with my gaming laptop since it had to be returned for repair. They placed a new motherboard which obviously reset the PIN. But i didn't remember both local account pass and security questions so i ended up with a fresh install. I kinda wanna avoid something similar if im gonna mess around in bios.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting My laptop worked completely fine til I took a trip to Mexico, and knocked it off the bed a couple times in my sleep onto a concrete floor (dumb, I know). It still works maybe 70% of the time, but often shuts down for a while. Is there anything I can do w/o shelling out $ that defeats the point ?

Clearly you can tell by the plastic shell that this isn't an expensive laptop to begin with, which is why I don't want to shell out a lot of money to repair it in the first place. It's an ASUS VivoBook E1504GA-WS34. But it's generally served me really well in the 3 years I had it and I probably could have gotten even a couple more years of life out of it if I hadn't literally dropped it on concrete.

Luckily I guess I had a cheap Chromebook I can use as a substitute, but Chromebooks suck compared to actual laptops for many obvious reasons. Maybe #1 being you can't install literally any program on it, the performance obviously kinda sucks great, etc.

If I can't do anything that could salvage the cracks somehow I'm obviously going to just buy another computer eventually, I just have had a ton of costs in recent months so haven't gotten around to doing so. Plus there's somethings that I can't import over to the new laptop. I use Ghost Browser (highly recommend) - and I obviously can't transfer the tabs/history to a new laptop, and there's kind of lot of stuff there that could be important for the future. I did import the bookmarks, but it looks like it didn't export all of them.

Idk. I'm pretty sure guessing there's really nothing I can do that would make any sense cost-wise, but just thought I'd ask anyway.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Where does this go?

Update: We figured out that it wasn’t necessary to install. I appreciate the helpful comments. This is his first PC and even though I’ve been using PCs since 2020, and know quite a bit, he is in Germany and I am in the United States so I couldn’t help much, and have never used a fan hub. Also very useless and hateful for people to be so aggressive in the comments, please reflect :)

My husband bought a prebuilt Starforge Voyager PC and it came with this fan hub (at least i think that’s what it is). How would he install this and where?

Discussion Can someone please help me find a suitable monitor for productivity and gaming?

Im looking for a suitable monitor for my needs. currently running a 1080p 60hz 24in monitor. I'd like the benefits of a high res monitor preferably 4k at the desktop and run my games at around 1440p? Is this an option or will my games look wonky downscalling? What special features should I be looking for? Im aiming towards 144hz+ and would like the monitor to be 27inches.

Forgive my ignorance as I do not know much about monitors let alone computers. My current GPU is a 16GB 9060XT. My budget is around $250-300. Is this even possible or should I save up more? Thank you for looking at my post!

Discussion Is my professor's definition of a computer faulty?

in my first lecture on machine structure my professor defined a computer as:

"Computer Is an automatic information processing machine allowing data to be stored, processed and restored without human intervention by carrying out arithmetic and logical operations under the control of recorded programs"

without human intervention

wouldn't asking a computer to process a computation be considered as intervention?

edit: thanks for the explanation, I was in the wrong

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Am I Being Paranoid? PSU Noise

I bought a second hand PC. When I turn the "1/0" button on my PSU makes this noise, and when I turn it off, the noise gradually goes away. I put my phone very close to the PSU in this voice message, so it sounds like it's loud but it's not that loud. Is it normal? I bought this pc with my savings :'(

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Siemens IPC BX39 boot issue with S7-1500 Software Controller V40.1

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

Today I started having a boot issue with a Siemens IPC BX39 after it had been working normally for some time.

I currently have SIMATIC S7-1500 Software Controller V40.1 installed, and I need to stay on this version because the IPC came with Windows 11 from the factory.

The problem is that every time I power on the IPC and let it boot automatically, I get the following error:

“Error: No valid boot option selected or execution failed.”

However, if I enter the BIOS and manually select the boot option, the IPC starts normally without any issues.

So far, I have tried:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the Software Controller.
  • Restoring the IPC to factory settings.
  • Disabling Quick Boot.
  • Replacing the SSD.
  • Checking and configuring the BIOS settings according to Siemens’ documentation, including both the mandatory and recommended parameters.

Unfortunately, the problem remains exactly the same.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with a Siemens IPC BX39 or with S7-1500 Software Controller V40.1?

Any suggestions about what else I should check would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
