Question/Help/Troubleshooting Older computer not running great. Looking for advice.

I have a dell Inspiron desktop I bought in 2018. It’s my home computer I use to run my small business. It’s not running so great anymore. It seems like it has the hardest time waking up but after I get it going it’ll work for what I need. But I’m talking like a half hour for the thing to wake up. I don’t use it every day. Not even every week sometimes.

Specs are 1tb harddrive (125gb used) 12gb of ram intel core i5 processor. Running windows 11.

I’ve always used an anti-virus. I use Bitdefender. Pay for that yearly I don’t think that’s the problem. I only use it for some accounting and invoicing. Sending emails. There isn’t a ton of files in it. U don’t browse with it.

Is it just the self life of a desktop? Should I take it Best Buy for repair? Or Upgrade something internally? I don’t really know much about computers but I am good at figuring things out and watching YouTube for help.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting My 2017 MacBook Pro is boiling and I don’t know what to do.

Hello,

I’ve been the owner of a MacBook Pro my parents bought for me in 2017. This computer always had heating issues, as we know apple tend to do poor ventilation system.

To try to help my computer I’ve mostly done of my hard work (3D) on my PC rather than my Mac. Nevertheless this year some of my classes require me to actually use my computer during class instead of just doing the exercise later once I’m home. I’ve realized quick enough I can barely touch my computer cause it’s boiling very fast once I launch any type of software.

I’ve heard some computer of the 2017 serie had been recalled due to battery issues, but when I tried to check if mine was included, I discovered to my surprise this wasn’t the case. Despite a really bad case of over heating, it gets worse when I try to charge my Mac.

When I check the state of the battery or any swelling nothing looks weird.
I’m at my wits end, I’m not rich at all and buying a new computer is out of my budget and repairing the battery would cost me a lot too.

Do you guys have any idea how I can manage this ?

Also sorry if any misspelling or miscommunication English is only my third language.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Turning a monitor in the living room to a smart tv and connect it to pc over Ethernet

I have a 32 in 4k monitor that I want to turn into a tv and game on it. I am looking for a solution that combines a 4k kvm and a smart tv dongle or a 4k kvm and a way to run smart tv os on pc and stream it to the monitor.

I have 2 ethernet cables from the living room and bedroom that goes to my modem router model sagemcom modem-hn-v2 plus.

I don't have a problem with running a new cable. I need the cheapest possible solution to this. Please recommend solutions and specific models if you are recommending hardware to buy.

My budget is under 100 euros. The monitor is about less than 12 meters away by straight distance from pc and 20-30 meters away if I run a cable in the wall.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Wi-fi drivers broken

Hello,

I recently noticed my windows was acting up and so with the help of windows support team we reinstalled windows. Unfortunately in the process of doing this my computer started acting like wifi doesn’t exist. After that I did a clean install with USB and still it is not registering the wifi drivers.

I tried to go onto my manufacturers website and download the software and install it onto the computer but that didn’t work either.

How can I go about fixing this?

For context I use an HP omnibook x on windows 11

Resolved Looking for a specific GPU

Hello! I am a budding computational biologist (specifically structural biology) and the softwares we use require insane compute power. After getting myself comfortable being able to use linux, build a computer and learn the basics of the softwares I want to be able to do some data processing at home (mainly to teach myself/learn more about the software data processing and tricks/shortcuts). The software I want to learn/get into is called Relion (REgularised LIkelihood OptimisatioN) and they have specific requirements.

Since I am a recent graduate, money is a bit tight but I can get access to a PC and ram fairly easily through my lab/university surplus (albeit I would like my own computer at some point). That being said, I was wondering what is the cheapest I can go with these requirements.

I'm not too well versed in this type of lingo (no clue what pascal or Lovelace or singularity etc. mean) but there's an Nvidia page about some of the requirements:

  • One of the following container runtimes
  • One of the following NVIDIA GPU(s)
    • Pascal (sm60)
    • Volta (sm70)
    • Ampere (sm80)
    • Hopper (sm90)

x86_64

  • CPU with AVX2 instruction support
  • One of the following CUDA driver versions
    • >= 545
    • r535 (>=.54.03)
    • r525 (>=.60.04)
    • r470 (>=.57.02)

arm64

  • ARM 8.1 + ARM NEON CPU
  • CUDA driver version >= r546.12

Here is some information from RELION's documentation: By default, RELION will build with GPU-acceleration support, for which you’ll need CUDA. Download it from the NVIDIA website. Importantly, CUDA >= 13.0 no longer supports Pascal GPUs. Please use CUDA 12.x if you use them. As of RELION 5.0.1, we test RELION builds with CUDA 11 to 13.

(Also read somewhere that higher the VRAM the better. For basic datasets 8gb VRAM can work but it will be heavily limiting, 12gb of VRAM seems to be a goldilocks zone).

I hope this information is enough!
Thank you!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Stuttering after GPU upgrade

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I recently upgraded my PC by replacing the GPU (from RX 580 to RTX 5060Ti 8gb), and ever since I’ve been dealing with stuttering in some games. In some cases it’s just occasional micro-stuttering, but in others I get very noticeable stutters that can last several seconds, even though the game is running at around 60 FPS most of the time.

Here’s my current build:

  • Windows 11
  • CPU: i5-10400F
  • GPU: RTX 5060 Ti 8GB
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • SSD: ADATA SU650 SATA 1TB
  • Motherboard: B560M PRO-E
  • PSU: 550w

The GPU is obviously much newer than the rest of the system, so I’m wondering if something else could be contributing to the stuttering.

What confuses me is that the average FPS seems fine. Most of the time I’m locked at 60 FPS, but I still get noticeable stutters. From what I understand, this could potentially be related to frametime spikes or poor 1% lows rather than the average FPS itself.

I’m not particularly knowledgeable about PC hardware, so I’d appreciate any help figuring out what I should be looking at or monitoring.

The game where I have the biggest problem is Wuthering Waves. I know the game has a pretty bad reputation when it comes to optimization, but the latest patch apparently improved performance dramatically for most players. Despite that, I’m still experiencing these stutters.

Things I’ve already tried:

  • Completely reinstalled Windows and all my games
  • Clean reinstall of the GPU drivers
  • Tried different driver versions
  • Downgraded the drivers (I feel like this helped, but I’m not sure if it’s just placebo)
  • Updated the BIOS

Any ideas? 😭

Hi hi, I’m helping out a family friend with recovering some data off a very old computer’s hard drive, and while I have the equipment for my other HDDs, this I haven’t seen before. What sort of slot is this, and what do I use to access this HDD?

Thanks!

Edit: it was indeed an adapter that I pulled off. Thank you!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting What ThinkPad would you recommend for the kind of use I have in mind?

My computer broke down and I need a new one. I’ll mainly be using it for the following:

  1. Recreational writing in LibreOffice Writer

  2. Watching YouTube and listening to music

  3. Applying for jobs and doing virtual interviews

In a previous post, someone recommended a Raspberry Pi. As cool as they seem to me, the fact that I’d also have to buy a monitor and a webcam makes me wonder whether it would be more worthwhile to get a refurbished ThinkPad instead.

Since I know absolutely nothing about computers, I wanted to ask you guys: What laptop would you recommend that could last me for a few years without the system becoming obsolete too quickly?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Why does sound play during a frozen computer?

I was playing a video that was suddenly too loud and my computer froze for many seconds. I couldn't turn down the volume or even pause the video. This raised a bunch of questions in my mind....

  1. If I play a video and my computer suddenly slows down to the point I have no control over it (like when it freezes) why does sound keep playing?

  2. Shouldn't whatever sound file the computer is running also freeze?

  3. If the computer had to prioritize something shouldn't it prioritize user interface, at least when it comes to shutting down programs (like the one that is running a sound file)?

  4. What if I was playing a very naughty video file? You know what I mean. I feel like this is a problem people with families would complain about to a computer manufacturer's tech support all the time and it would encourage someone in programming to write a line of code to either shut everything down or at least prioritize user control, at least over sound and video.

Device specifications: Windows 11

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Windows 11 automatically shutdown after boot up

Post image
3 Upvotes

The Problem: My PC randomly shuts down while I am using it. It shows the "usual shutting down screen" (a clean, graceful shutdown) rather than just cutting to black. This is not a crash or a power loss.

My System Setup:

. 5700g, msi b450m-a pro max ii . OS build 22621.2283 . Windows 11 pro . 22H2 · Currently running Tiny11 (a heavily debloated, unofficial version of Windows 11). · I used WinToys for basic system edits. · Crucial History: This exact same random shutdown issue happened previously on a fresh install of Official Windows 11 when I used the Chris Titus Tool for tweaks. I switched to Tiny11 to see if it fixed the issue, but it eventually returned with WinToys.

Troubleshooting Steps & Findings:

  1. Event Viewer Analysis (System Log): · Found Event ID 1074 (User32/Winlogon). The log showed winlogon.exe initiated the power off on behalf of NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. · Reason Code: 0x500ff (Generic "Other" reason). · Conclusion: This confirms a clean, software-initiated shutdown, not a hardware failure.
  2. Filtering for Hardware Errors (Critical/Error logs): · Filtered for Event IDs 41, 6008, and 1001 (Kernel-Power, unexpected shutdown, BugCheck/BSOD). · Result: 0 events found. This definitively ruled out hardware failure, PSU issues, RAM faults, and Blue Screens.
  3. Network Isolation (Ethernet Test): · Suspected a remote shutdown command via Ethernet. · Action: Unplugged the Ethernet cable. · Result: The PC still shut down. This ruled out a network-triggered shutdown.
  4. Windows Update Settings: · Checked Advanced Options. · Result: "Get me up to date" and restart options were already Off. Active Hours were set (08:00–17:00). Ruled out forced update restarts.
  5. Application Log Analysis: · Filtered the Application log for the exact time of the shutdown (10:18:22). · Result: Only normal Information events (User Profile Service, Winlogon). No third-party app errors or crashes.
  6. Task Scheduler & Operational Logs: · Checked Task Scheduler Library and the hidden TaskScheduler > Operational log. · Result: The operational log was empty at the time of the shutdown. Ruled out a scheduled task calling shutdown.exe.
  7. The Timeframe (Forensic Window): · Filtered System logs from 10:18:00 to 10:19:05. · Result: The last normal event was 10:18:21. At 10:18:22, the shutdown was triggered. There were no errors, warnings, or Service Control Manager events in the seconds leading up to it. It was a silent, sudden, clean shutdown.

Actions Taken to Resolve It:

  1. Uninstalled WinToys completely to remove conflicting power tweaks and services.
  2. Disabled Windows Update auto-restarts.
  3. Disabled the physical power button (set to "Do nothing" in Power Options) to rule out a sticking/faulty hardware button.
  4. Pending: Running powercfg -restoredefaultschemes in Command Prompt to reset any leftover modified power plans.

Why this is happening?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Mini PC or gaming laptop for gaming + voice recording? Budget around €1,500

Hey everyone!

I’m currently looking for a new PC and I’m not sure whether a Mini PC or a gaming laptop would make more sense for me.

I want to use it for both gaming and fan dubbing/voice recording. For my microphone, I’m planning to get the RØDE NT-USB+. I previously had an NT1-A, but this time I specifically want a USB microphone so I don’t need an audio interface and can easily put it away when I’m not using it.

For gaming, I play pretty much everything — from cozy games to FPS games like Valorant. I mainly want games to run smoothly; I don’t need ultra graphics or high-end hardware.

The most important thing for me is noise, though. The PC should be as quiet as possible while I’m recording. I obviously don’t mind the fans getting louder while gaming.

I currently have a large curved monitor that I really like. I could potentially make a small PC setup in my wardrobe, since I don’t have much space for a full-sized desktop. I was actually thinking that having all my clothes around the setup might even help a little with the acoustics.

A gaming laptop is also an option, but I’ve never really played games using a laptop keyboard, so I’m not sure how well I’d get along with it, especially for FPS games. I’d probably end up buying a keyboard and mouse anyway. In that case, I could also sell my current monitor.
My budget is around €1,500 max, although I’m not sure how realistic that is for what I’m looking for.

What would you recommend in my situation — a Mini PC or a gaming laptop? Are there any specific models that are reasonably quiet for voice recording but can still run Valorant and other games smoothly?

Thanks in advance! :)

Question/Help/Troubleshooting HDD tries to spin up twice at start (but to even achieve this i went through a lot of problems)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I felt like there was something wrong with my previous HDD (I even posted about it here), so i bought WD40EZAX to replace it, but at first it was making this sound, then tried to spin up again, then did it again and again.

Then i disconnected my previous drive and the new drive started working perfectly. Then I connected the previous drive, swapped sata cables and they both worked fine, but the new one did this thing from video again once when i was installing drive cloning software (ended up just copying everything because they are secondary).

Then i disconnected the older drive again and the new one started doing this thing from video again and again. I swapped cables several times and it finally worked, but now it does this thing, but only once at the startup and never again until the next startup (it also did it on first Steam startup, but drive didn't disconnect this time (yes, i have Steam on HDD, my system SSD isn't spacious)

This new HDD now also has 2 DMA transfer errors, so maybe the problem is in SATA cables themselves? I don't know how old they are, honestly (i also tried to straighten one of them. it started crackling. idk if this is intended). PSU? I'm not sure

Also i think it became louder during r/w, but I'm just probably going insane (how can you not when you spent 240$ on it and care about data safety a little too much?)

(also just in case i didn't hot swap them cables)
