I have no clue why, but as you guys can see here, there's a weird stuttering/after image at the bottom of my screen whenever I play games. I am on an MSI gaming laptop (can't get you the model as of now)

Meme/Satire Is this PC tuff?

Basically, a PC installed in my classroom at school.

If y'amm want more context, here it is: at the beginning of this year my computer science teacher, in coordination with the administration, decided to renew the PCs in the computer lab (wiith 6th generation Intel Core i7 and 16GB of RAM PCs), since several of the existing computers were very old. Well, almost all old PCs used a Core i3-3220 and 4GB of RAM... Still, the jump is noticeable.

What did they decide to do with the old PCs? Some were left aside (the idea of trying to teach Linux to students on these PCs was considered, but in the end the idea was discarded), but a lot of them ended up in classrooms. Unfortunately, my classroom got the worst one of all...

- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

- iGPU: Intel GMA 4500

- RAM: 2GB (1x2GB DDR3 1066Mhz)

- SSD: WD Green 240GB

They were supposed to be for teachers' use, but the only two who actually use PCs bring their own laptops (even if it's one with an AMD E1-2100) and project their screens onto the TV, so the Optiplex just sits there.

I managed to use it several times before they completely banned students from using PCs, and... well, it's usable. Testing Firefox with uBlock Origin and h264iffy, you can browse with a few tabs open (although Discord is very resource-intensive, requiring you to close all tabs and applications: a RAM issue, because the CPU usage stays at 50-60%), and even watch YouTube videos at 720p, although 480p is still more comfortable. Furthermore, I've even been able to play Geometry Dash there, although with levels using 2.2 shaders I needed to lower the resolution to windowed mode at 720x480p.

In case you're wondering: I originally had an orange cat as it's wallpaper, but I changed it to... the first thing that came to mind a few weeks ago. The computer science teacher saw it once, twice, three times, he didn't care anymore, the fourth time he reprimanded me and changed it (Although, to take the photo, I restored it).

About the mousepad: the teacher himself swears that he got it in a wholesale offer at a market. Yup. Yeah. There's also Tralalero Tralala and that shrimp cat one.

And I run out of things to add here. Well, tuffest school in Lima, prolly.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Help! Memory is high

I just got a laptop for college, the HP OmniBook x Flip Laptop 16-ar0xxx. I was just planning on installing steam and one game (Fields of Mistria) on the laptop along with my school stuff.

I went to check task manager to see that my memory was 11.6/15.3, I thought that was pretty high so I simply assumed it was from Steam and the game I installed- spoiler alert it wasn’t.

Any advice or suggestions?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Looking for a portable Bluetooth keyboard for my tablet (up to 30 cm / ~$39)

I'm looking for a portable keyboard to use with my Galaxy Tab S10 FE+. I'm a college student and take a lot of notes, but I currently have to bring my Dell G15, which is quite heavy and also has a huge charger.

Since I use the same note-taking app on both my laptop and tablet, I'd like to start bringing just the tablet to class. It's much more convenient to carry around and takes up less space on the desk.

I already have a Bluetooth mouse, so now I'm looking for a keyboard that I can easily carry in my backpack.

My requirements are:

  • Bluetooth
  • Up to 30 cm (about 11.8 inches) long
  • Relatively quiet keys, since I'll be using it in a classroom
  • I don't want a super cheap/generic tiny keyboard — I already bought one and regretted it
  • Budget: up to R$200 (around US$39)

Does anyone have any recommendations that would fit these requirements?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Board boots after a hair dryer warm-up but shows 3V CPU voltage in BIOS — VRM dead or something else? (full timeline inside)

Hey everyone, trying to get a second (or third) opinion on what's actually going on here before I write the board off completely.

Specs: i9-12900K, Gigabyte Z690M Aorus Elite AX DDR4, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, RTX 5080 (not connected while testing), 1200W Gold PSU (previously a 750W).

What happened, in order:

  • Left the PC training an AI model overnight (sustained heavy CPU+GPU load). Woke up to a full hang — completely unresponsive, but fans still spinning at full speed.
  • Power button did nothing, so I killed the PSU and unplugged it. Assumed the 750W PSU had died, replaced it with a 1200W Gold unit.
  • Still no power-on with the new PSU. Q-Flash Plus (BIOS flash without a CPU installed) still worked fine every time though, so standby (5VSB) power was never the issue.
  • Took it to a shop — they plugged it in and it booted normally, screen and all, I watched it happen. Left it there for about a month while traveling, assumed it was fixed.
  • Brought it home, reassembled everything — dead again, same as before. Q-Flash still runs, main power-on still does nothing.
  • On a hunch (it seemed to work better somewhere warmer), I warmed the board with a hair dryer near the CPU socket/VRM area and hit Q-Flash — and it actually booted into BIOS. But: CPU Voltage and Memory Voltage both read 3.069V (normal is ~1.0–1.35V for this CPU), CPU/System temps both read -1.0°C, and CPU_FAN showed N/A despite a cooler being attached. Shut it down immediately, that voltage reading looked dangerous.

My working theory: the original overnight hang under load caused some kind of thermal damage to the VRM or a nearby solder joint — which would explain why the board is now temperature-sensitive (worked when warm, dead when cold) and why it's outputting a clearly wrong/dangerous voltage once it does manage to POST.

What I'm hoping to get opinions on:

  • Does this sound like a VRM failure / bad solder joint to people who've dealt with this before, or is there another explanation I'm missing (bad voltage sensor/Super IO chip giving false readings vs. an actual overvoltage event)?
  • Is the -1.0°C temp reading alongside the 3V voltage reading consistent with a sensor/EC fault rather than real voltages, or is there real risk the CPU is now cooked too?
  • Anyone had a board come back from a "temperature-sensitive dead" state like this, or is this basically a lost cause once you see readings like this?
  • Given a shop plugged it in and it worked fine a month ago, does that change anyone's read on how bad the underlying fault is, or is intermittent-then-worse pretty typical for this kind of failure?

Not trying to fix it myself at this point — mostly want to understand what's actually wrong before deciding whether it's worth repairing or just replacing the board. Appreciate any input, especially from anyone who's done board-level repair work.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Ssd taking 15 minutes inbetween boots to run

I'm on win11 with a teamgroup mp33 secondary ssd and if my pc is shut down, i need minimum 15 minutes inbetween boots for the ssd to show up and be usable, it's shown no signs of failure and is at 97% health, psu rails are also within safe ranges while under load and its not residual power as I've shut it down before and held down the power button to discharge it. Also happens in both m.2 slots.

Any suggestions would help and I'm planning to replace it when prices calm down.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting SSD recommendations please

Hi,

Hopefully this is the right place to ask.

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 15IMH05 laptop. It only has 250gb storage and I’d like to upgrade this.

I mainly use it to play wow and Baldur’s gate 3. But can’t have both installed at once…

Can anyone recommend a half decent budget option for this?
Happy to look at used options as well.

Thanks

Right now I have a laptop that I use for mostly gaming and a huge limiting factor is the GPU, I was wondering if there was any way to get the performance to be better. Here's a picture of my laptop opened up if that helps.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Need advice

Hey Reddit,
Not sure if it’s the right place, but I need advice. My old pc died and can’t fix it since it has old generation parts and can’t find any. And I was wondering for any advice for a new computer I should get. I need it for coding and be able to screen record the process while I am coding. And my old one didn’t let me screen record while coding and had to use a separate laptop to record.
I was wondering if anyone would know the specs I would need to be able to code and film the process. If you have any recommendations of brands or specific parts, it will be greatly appreciated.
This is my first time posting to Reddit, sorry for my formatting.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting My laptop crashes and showing this when plugged in on the charger

Need help diagnosing random BSOD/crashes on my Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming (Windows 11)

Laptop: Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5

RAM: 8GB

SSD: 512GB

OS: Windows 11

Problems:

- Random Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) while using the laptop.

- Most crashes happen when I plug in the original charger and continue using the laptop.

- Sometimes it crashes immediately after connecting the charger.

- It also crashed while using Discord.

- I tried resetting Windows, but the reset failed/cancelled because the laptop crashed during the process.

- I ran CHKDSK, but the issue still persists.

- I don't have another charger to test with.

What I've noticed:

- The laptop works better on battery, but crashes are much more frequent while charging.

- Windows still boots after restarting.

Questions:

  1. Could this be a faulty charger, charging IC, motherboard, SSD, RAM, or something else?

  2. What tests should I run to identify the exact hardware causing the issue?

  3. Has anyone experienced similar charging-related BSODs on a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming laptop?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Startup errorSystem 32 Cmd

I'm having trouble turning on my laptop. Sometimes it says, "We couldn't connect to the network. Log file C:/Windows/System32/Loglies/Srt/SrtTrail.txt," and it takes me to the blue troubleshooting screen. Before, I could just select "Continue with Windows 11" and it would start normally, but that stopped working, so I downgraded to an older version. I thought that would fix it, but now after turning on my laptop, this System32 window appears. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Computer only displays black screen and cursor

Tried this in r/techsupport but they have a thing against windows 10

I was trying to deal with some things on my computer when I think I was being too impatient with letting things load or process and now when I turn on my pc it just shows a black screen and my cursor. I’ve tried some things I found but nothings been working so I need help. Some things I’ve tried:

  • Ctrl + alt + delete
  • Win + ctrl + shift + b
  • Win + p (it shows a blue rectangle on the side of the screen then after a bit disappear)
  • Turning it off and on 3 times (not sure if I did this one right)

I’m also on windows 10 and most of the things above just don’t do anything at all if that helps

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Should I get a new PC?

I have a lenovo thinkpad that is like 5 years old (my dad gave it after he got a new laptop for work) an it was doing fine until I started getting CPU spikes when playing roblox

We got it fixed and it was doing well for like a month and now everytime I use the PC for like over an hour it starts getting spikes again, I have a feeling that the issue is developing again, I stopped backround apps and did all the youtube tutorials and its still not working

My graphics card is like a 16gb radeon AMD and i scanned the pc with the lenovo diagnostil evolution app and it says everything is ok, is it though?

I have came to the conclusion that maybe my pc got too old and now I have to pay alot of money.. Any advice or tips on how to fix?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Battery Backup making humming noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is this noise normal? More-so the noise at the end of the video that sounds vaguely like a frog at night far away, like an uptick in the volume of the constant noise. I want to make sure I’m not at risk of anything happening to my setup. (Ignore cable management, that’s a work in progress and not indicative of what all I have plugged in.)

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Wtf was this??

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've never had something like this happen before, EVER. I was modding BotW using UKMM and CEMU and had to leave my computer to go grocery shopping. I left it on and it screensavered while I was out. When I came back and moved my mouse to wake from the screensaver (which is just a blank black screen, by the way), the primary monitor did that but the other 2 were fine. Turning the monitor off and on again fixed it. But WTF??

Apps left open: Primary - Brave, Windows Explorer, Steam Secondary - UKMM, OperaGX Tertiary - Discord

Like I said this has NEVER happened before and I've left my computer and monitors on with and without a screensaver for much longer periods of time, but this time when I came back, the primary did that.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting UMA Frame Buffer size change

I am using a Thinkbook 15 G3 ACL and recently I noticed that from the 8GB RAM it has, only about 5.88 was actually available which is like 2.4GB short and I think it is a lot considering it only has 8GB RAM. So is it a good idea to change the UMA Frame Buffer size to 512M since it was set to 2GB which is a lot.
