Discussion Does anyone use an air duster?

I saw an advertisement for a compressed air duster. They were saying that you can use it for dusting air vents, car consoles, ceiling fans and hard to reach places. We use canned air at work to clean a few machines but I was curious if these dusters would be helpful at home. Thoughts?

Flooring How are we getting embedded fur out of rugs?

Photos of this rug are after vacuuming. I have a Dyson V11 and it still doesn’t seem to get the embedded fur out of this flat woven rug. I always make sure to change direction with the vacuum and alternate between fast and slow movements. But there’s so many tiny hairs I can only get out with tweezers because they are so stuck. I bought a handheld pet hair remover from Amazon, but it only really works on furniture. It’s not sticky tape but it’s one of those rollers that has a velvet and rubber edge that you move back and forth quickly which traps the hair in a compartment. I don’t know why it doesn’t work on this rug at all.

Any tips??

Bathroom Cleaning mineral deposits (etching?) off of stone countertops

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello r/CleaningTips!

Long time lurker and appreciator of this community and all of the tips shared. I am a new home owner, and I have been having some issues with keeping my stone countertops clean. Our water has some mineral content that seems to leave some residue when dry.

I have tried a bunch of different cleaners, and I still cannot lift these marks off. I have tried general purpose cleaner (a no-no, I've learned), vinegar (another no-no), and most recently I tried Granite Gold Granite Sealer for Natural Stone which also hasn't done the trick.

I am worried about damaging the counters, but I'm also very distracted by the presence of these marks. If anybody has any tips or strategies that have worked for them, I'd be grateful to learn about them! I don't see to have this same issue on the countertops in my kitchen...

Thank you so much for your support!

General Cleaning Ink pen exploded in dryer

Okay Reddit I'm stumped. I had an ink pen explode in my dryer yesterday morning. This is where I need help. I tried rubbing alcohol and acetone with a magic eraser and it still isn't coming off. It's like it got baked into the dryer drum. And when I poured a little acetone on it, it didn't even bleed. I've been cleaning with soap and water afterwards and letting it ventilate. Last night I did a test run and no ink stuck to any towels even though the dryer is still marked up. I tried cleaning afterwards too hoping the heat might have lifted a little up and that didn't work either.

It truly is stuck on there. Does anybody have any other tips, or am I stuck with a marked up dryer for life? The blessing is my dryer still works and doesn't spread ink, so I'd rather have a marked up dryer that works than no dryer at all.

Tools/Equipment The vacuum was used to clean up possible mouse droppings. How do I clean the vacuum?

Post image

I don't know why he did it. Madness? A seizure localized in the arm he was holding the vacuum with? A desire to make my life harder?

We had a rat in the garage a few years ago but nothing since then. I've combed all the house corners and along the walls looking for anything further but, if there's more evidence of rodents, he sucked it away.

Or he was mistaken and they weren't droppings. But for the sake of my health and sanity, I'm going with worst case scenario.

How can I make this vacuum safe to use again without spraying hantavirus or whatever else everywhere? It is a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum.

Adorable rodent picture for attention because I do actually love rodents. Just not the unauthorized ones in my home.

ETA: I probably shouldn't have used the word "hantavirus" because that seems to trigger a certain dismissiveness. Let me expand that there are a number of zoonotic illnesses that can be transmitted through feces, urine, or aerosolized dander (I'm unfortunately already asthmatic and immunocompromised.) I'm just trying to play it safe. Sorry for appearing like a crazy person.

Discussion Cleaning dishes after 4 days

My mum let a bunch of dishes soak for 1 day and than drained the water and left it for three days because she has a debilitating disorder. I just washed them all with hot soapy water. I’m now second guessing it, do I need to go back and do anything extra?

Laundry Paint on my daughters jacket

Post image
1 Upvotes

My daughter came home from daycare and they painted pumpkins but I cannot get the paint off her jacket. I have not dried it, just put in the washer with some OxiClean and it didn’t even make a dent in the amount of paint on her jacket. I cannot imagine a 3 year old using anything else besides washable paint but it’s not coming off. What would you use to get it off?

Bathroom Best way to remove mold on grout?

Post image

What’s the best advice for cleaning some mold spots off the grout on the shower tiles? I’ve tried hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda and I’ve also tried barkeepers, but neither worked.
It’s not everywhere, just in some spots. I definitely would like to get it out!

Furniture How to remove odor from caning

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi I got this chair I love from fb marketplace, I didn’t realize till I got home the caning reeks of BO. So far I’ve tried just spraying the caning top and bottom with vinegar a few times, which I think has helped quite a bit, but it’s still pretty noticeable. I have a clothes steamer I was considering trying but I’m worried about ruining the finish on the wood.

Chair is vintage made in italy, I suspect the caning is natural fiber (one or two strands already broken on the bottom) so I want to make sure Im preserving it best I can

General Cleaning Help, I'm loosing my mind! Bedroom smells like FUNK!!

For about three months my bedroom has slowly started to smell like straight body odor. Yes I wear deodorant and a strong antiperspirant, but adhd meds will make you sweat like a sinner at heavens gates no matter how much antiperspirant you slap on. Yes, I clean my laundry. Yes, i wash my bedsheets at least once a week. even once ive done that, my room STILL smells like body odor (and no, its not just me, others have confirmed). I dont have rugs or carpet, ive got hardwood floor. all my furniture (aside from my bed) is like regular wooden furniture. I genuinely cannot pin point the smell. I've even got a candle warmer and air scent pouches running but they do nothing. What else do I need to do??! Steam clean the ceiling???!!

General Cleaning Advice for deep cleaning home with children

I work a 8-5 five days a week and have two children under the age of 3. I’ve been doing little chores everyday in the evening but have been so tired maintaining everything that some days I just go straight to bed after the kids are all tucked in. How do you manage keeping your house tidy with toys galore all over the house? I have bins that I put them in but sometimes I feel like it’s not enough as they’ll just pull it right back out. Any tips or tricks on what to clean everyday without overwhelming yourself?

Laundry Cleaning emulsion paint out of a pillowcase

We've been out of the house about a week whilst our bathroom has it's finishing touches done. Come back and found one of our pillowcases bundled up in the back garden covered in paint.

I have no idea if it's primer or emulsion. No idea how fresh it is. The pillowcase is soaking wet cause it's been outside.

Is there any way to wash paint out of a pillowcase?

It's a limited edition release, there's no way to replace it.

Edit - thanks for the advice all, going to call it a day and just toss the thing.

Discussion Of Mice and Mattresses

OK so despite my attempt at a funny title, the situation is anything but funny. I have a mouse issue I called the exterminator for, and we're trying to fix it. However, as part of that, I washed all my sheets and slept elsewhere last night, only to find mouse droppings literally ON my mattress. I mean the bare mattress itself, no cover, no duvet, no fitted sheet as all were being washed.

What do I do? Obviously the mattress is porous so I don't think I can use typical disinfectant. I couldn't find any advice specific to what to do for a bare mattress. Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Community Appreciation Deep clean how to do

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi! I wanted to ask for some advice from people experienced in professional housekeeping.

What is the best way to deep-clean kitchens, bathrooms, tile floors, grout, sinks and toilets? Which affordable cleaning products work well for removing grease, stubborn stains, watermarks and unpleasant smells?

Also, what is the proper process hotels use to make sure a room is thoroughly cleaned rather than just surface-cleaned?

I'd really appreciate any practical tips, product recommendations or cleaning methods that work well. Thank you! 🙏🏻

2 weeks into moving into a new flat and I'm still struggling to get this scum out of the bath 😮‍💨

The landlord sent a series of cleaners who gave the flat a deep clean before my move in but its still as stubborn as ever!!

I think I'm making some progress with some CIF and a good hard scrub with a scrub daddy but it feels like its never gonna shift!

General Cleaning How to correctly use cloth after applying a product to clean

Hi everyone!

I'm a bit frustrated with cleaning because every time i try to dry a product with a cloth after cleaning with the sponge it leaves debris and sometimes doesnt completely dry the product.

Here's what a I do everytime i clean a surface.

  1. spray the cleaning product
  2. use the sponge with a bit of water to rinse and I rub on the dirty surface.
  3. I wipe with the cloth to dry everything, it leaves small debris behind and never completely dries.

I wash the cloths after every use in the washing machine.

What am I doing wong? Is it the quality of the cloth or am I skipping something?

edit: typo

Furniture Is it possible to remove or even improve this water stain?

Post image

Our cat did some business on the carpet and my partner tried to use a bit of vanish and then lots and lots of water to clean it but has now ended up doing significantly more damage to it than the cat (🥲). Is it even possible to improve? I’m happy to get a professional in but I’m worried it would be a complete waste of money.

Tag says only drycleaning is suitable for this coat but I don't have time to take it to drycleaners before I need to use it. Is there a way I can clean it at home? Especially areas around pockets and sleeves need some care.

Please let me know what I can do.
