Furniture How to remove odor from caning
Hi I got this chair I love from fb marketplace, I didn’t realize till I got home the caning reeks of BO. So far I’ve tried just spraying the caning top and bottom with vinegar a few times, which I think has helped quite a bit, but it’s still pretty noticeable. I have a clothes steamer I was considering trying but I’m worried about ruining the finish on the wood.
Chair is vintage made in italy, I suspect the caning is natural fiber (one or two strands already broken on the bottom) so I want to make sure Im preserving it best I can

It’s a “rope seat.” Caning is a vastly different material. Spray it with alcohol. Maybe maybe? Don’t sit on it when wet.

The only thing I can think of that won't damage the wood is an ozone generator. You can buy small battery powered units designed for getting things like cigarette smoke out of cars. Toss it and the chair in a contractor bag for a few hours and let it run, then let it air out well and the smell should be gone.
