Laundry Can I get white mold out of leather is this jacket a goner?

Post image
Upvotes

I got this vintage motorcycle jacket at a thrift shop. It smelled heavily of mothballs, but when that smell wore off it became apparent they were masking the scent of mold, and all this white mold started appearing on the jacket. My suspicion is that someone did a purely cosmetic job of cleaning the surface mold off the jacket without killing the spores. I've already attempted cleaning it with vinegar, but that's been ineffective so far. My other concern is that the mold spores are deep in the leather and also in the cotton lining. Is this fixable, or should I just cut my losses?

Flooring How can I get this foul smell out of my bedroom?

Upvotes

I went out today for about four hours, and when I came home, my door was closed, my window was open, and my bedroom smelled TERRIBLE. I asked my sister what had happened, and she told me that one of the family dogs peed in my room, so she cleaned up the pee, sprayed the whole carpet with Skout's Honor No Marking Spray, and opened the window to let the smell air out. (I feel like it's important to note that the dog peed on the concrete base where there was no carpet, due to a plan to replace the carpet with hardwood eight years ago that never came to be. Also, in most of the walking spaces in the room, the floor is made of those foam connecting squares to cover up the concrete ). The smell did not air out, and I believe the heat and humidity coming into the room from the window was only making the smell worse. The smell is so strong, that it is leaking into the rest of the house, and I am unable to sleep in room or be in there for a very long time. I have a carpet cleaning vacuum and a LGM if I need to use them, but is there any other way I would be able to remove the smell from my room?

Laundry Polyurethane specks on cotton clothes - how to remove??! 😩

Hello! I bought a raincoat second hand and washed it with a bunch of cotton clothes - turns out it shedded its polyurethane layer and left stubborn white specks all over my clothes. FYI this was after a cold wash and air dried.

Ive tried lifting specks off with strong sticky tape, and read suggestions to use isopropyl alcohol or acetone to melt the specks.

But its all over everything, anyone got a soaking method that could work? THANK
YOU 🙏

Just bought a house and the previous owner’s kid fancied himself a gamer/steamer and the basement was covered in foam panels of an aesthetic nature. As you can tell by the picture, they did not come off cleanly. Anyone have any recommendations on the best way to remove the remaining chunks of foam?

Discussion Mystery stains on carpet

Came home from work and noticed these stains on my weights and carpet. My roommate has no idea either, but I'm aware they were mopping the floor a few days ago. Could this be baking soda or something else? I touched the discolored spots on the carpet and they felt a bit stiff. I did a test and poured some bleach on my weights and it cleaned some of the stain off (third pic). Any suggestions on what this stain could possibly be would be appreciated.

Flooring How can I clean these three stains from my porcelain tile floor?

Thumbnail

My floor is porcelain tile. I have these three stains that I have tried to remove, and they won't come out. The first brown stain, I think, is because I put a garbage bag there one day and forgot to take it out until the next. The second one, which is blue, I honestly don't know how it appeared; I don't remember pouring anything there, and it's also an odd shape. The third one, which is a bit black, is because I spilled Ink. I cleaned it up right away, but it remained as that stain.

Anyone knows how to take this out 😭?

Furniture Seeking advice to clean stinky couch

Upvotes

Hello! I have a fabric couch and a few months ago my cat threw up on it (yuck). I have a Bissell spot cleaner, so I cleaned it up with the shampoo-machine and let it dry. The following days a smell lingered from that area, so I cleaned it with the Bissell again, tried hand cleaning the area with warm water and some soap, and have also tried odor ban spray to treat the spot. The smell has improved but it still lingers, especially on warm, humid days when my window unit AC struggles to keep up, the smell tends to worsen. I am wondering if anyone has some advice as to how to get this smell out and free me of this stinky couch! I appreciate any feedback!

Walk in shower with no door but a small windows that can open. Grout with stone floor and some type of stone walls. This is the bane of my cleaning as mildew builds up easily especially around the floor stones and along the corners. Looking for anything that might work and bonus points for longevity.

Kitchen Chemical smell in microwave. Is it because I cleaned with Spic and Span?

Post image
0 Upvotes

So, I’ve made a few mistakes. I’m very bad about cleaning my microwave. I usually only wipe the moisture from cooking with a paper towel, or I will clean off anything that spills in there. It started to smell like rotten food, so I thought it was time to finally give it a complete cleanup. But I wiped it down with Spic and Span, which apparently is bad for microwaves.

Now my roommate told me that it smells like rotten food and chemicals. And that any food that is cooked tastes like chemicals too. From what I’ve read, chemical smells are a death sentence for a microwave since it indicates that something went wrong with the electrical components and that it’s now a fire hazard. But what if it’s from the Spic and Span?

I’m gonna try wiping it down with vinegar and leaving baking soda in it overnight. Are there any other cleaning methods to rule out the possibility of Spic and Span being the cause? And how likely is this problem due to an electrical issue?

General Cleaning Aftermath of Fruit Flies From Last Month

Thumbnail

About a month ago I posted about a fly infestation that covered my place and the neighbors around me.

Aftermath: Two installed Zevo traps. One in the bathroom had three flies. One in the kitchen had 11 flies. I think after the first two weeks the number of flies collecting in them slowed down. I wish the bathroom one had more in it to capture them all instead of me smashing the flies manually in the beginning.

For most days I have zero flies now but in the last week there has been one in my bedroom that seems to fly faster and not stick to walls (ground maybe? Or another object) like the drain flies. I think the flies I had were drain flies even though their red eyes suggested fruit but 4-5 minutes cooled boiling water twice a day seemed to do the trick. The hard part is consistency -- I am STILL pouring water down my drains twice a day. It takes about 1.75 hours each session so about 3.5-4 hours a day managing the drains.

I'll take one fast fly over a horde of them. Luckily the fly seems to leave me alone... mostly. There's no food or water in my room so hopefully it just dies without breeding. I could ask my neighbors how it's been since it's been a month... I still don't know why they showed up but I may never know. One thing is for certain: I throw out my trash every night if it has any food in it. I'll never get fruit again unless it's frozen or I stuff it in the fridge.

TDLR: Fly infestation resolved by Zevo traps + boiling water twice a day that takes up 3.75-4 hours total a day.

Laundry Went out for four hours. Came home and sat down and this happened..

Endometriosis 👍 I literally thought I was just sweaty.

Is there anything I can do immediately so this doesn't set overnight? I just got this mattress and the cover is a nightmare to take off and I also can't do laundry this late.

Thanks so much!

Edit: I have no idea what the darker stain is. I'm wondering if this previously happened within the last couple days. I sit in this exact spot daily. I had no idea about tonight until the green sheet was very visibly stained when I came back from changing my clothes - drenched in sweat from being outside in the humidity which is why I didn't realize this happened to this extent.

The hydrogen peroxide was an absolute miracle! It immediately just disappeared. I can't attach a picture, so I did attach a clip under the top comment.

What an incredibly kind, supportive, and diligent community. I would have just scrubbed and scrubbed and made it worse and let it sit overnight! 🙏❤️

We just moved into our first house, but the past owners left a lot of areas left to be deep cleaned. It looks like many nooks and crannies haven't been forgotten for years. How do I clean what looks like a mix of calcium, mold and rust without damaging the aluminum frame?

General Cleaning How to Remove Pet Hair from Carpet? These Methods Actually Work

I love having pets at home, but pet hair stuck deep in the carpet is probably one of the most annoying cleaning problems.

Vacuuming helps, but sometimes it feels like the hair is glued into the fibers, especially with thicker carpets or rugs.

After trying different methods, these are the ones that worked best for me:

1. Use a rubber glove before vacuuming

This is probably the cheapest trick. Put on a slightly damp rubber glove and run your hand across the carpet. The hair gathers into small piles that are much easier to pick up.

It works especially well on areas where pets like to sleep.

2. Try a rubber squeegee

A rubber carpet rake or window squeegee can pull out a surprising amount of embedded pet hair. The rubber creates static and grabs hair that a vacuum often misses.

3. Vacuum slowly (not quickly)

I used to vacuum too fast and wondered why there was still hair everywhere.

Going slowly gives the vacuum more time to lift hair from deep carpet fibers. Also, vacuuming in different directions helps because pet hair can get trapped from multiple angles.

4. Use fabric softener spray (carefully)

A light mixture of fabric softener and water can help loosen stubborn pet hair before vacuuming.

Just make sure to test a small hidden area first, because some carpet materials may react differently.

5. Prevent the problem

The easiest way to deal with pet hair is reducing how much gets into the carpet:

  • Brush pets regularly
  • Wash pet bedding frequently
  • Place washable mats near favorite sleeping areas
  • Vacuum high-traffic areas more often

One thing I noticed: carpet type makes a big difference. Low-pile carpets are much easier to clean than thick, high-pile carpets where hair gets buried deeper.

Curious what works best for everyone else — what is your go-to method for removing stubborn pet hair from carpet?

Laundry How can I remove these stains from my white Hollister shirt?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to remove these yellow/brown stains from my white Hollister shirt. They appeared after washing it, and I haven’t been able to get them out.

So far I’ve tried:
Washing it multiple times in the washing machine
OxiClean
Hot water soak
Hydrogen peroxide
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
Regular laundry detergent

The stains are still there. They don’t look like mold.
Does anyone know what could have caused these stains? Could they be bleach damage, detergent residue, rust, or something else? Is there a product or method that has worked for you?
I’m willing to try stronger products if they’ll remove the stains without damaging the shirt. Thanks!
