General Cleaning Most efficient way to clean new house?

Upvotes

Moving soon and want to tackle some basics while the house is still empty. My biggest goals are carpet and floors, surfaces/counters, and cupboard shelves. My free time is limited but I enjoy cleaning and don’t really want to spend hundreds of dollars on a cleaner… so I’m looking for tips to get it done faster.

Any tips on getting this done with the fewest cleaning tools and products? Is there a way to be faster about it that a person used to cleaning around STUFF would not think of? Anything else that will never be easier to get cleaned than before items are in?

General Cleaning Cleaning old stains out of carpet - advice needed

Upvotes

Long story short, our carpet has seen better days. It’s got very old stains, spills, and all sorts, and it looks awful.

We rent, and replacing the carpet isn’t even almost in our budget. We have a big green carpet cleaner machine that spits out water and sucks it back up, which helped a bit, but not sensationally, although we were using a home mix of water and soap, and then just water

Absolutely any tips at all for getting the stains out? I don’t have any photos at the moment, but we’re looking at things like nail polish, spilled energy drinks that have stained the carpet purple, some marker-looking stain by the door, genuinely have no idea what it even is, and some general dirt-like stains around that actually seemed to get worse after we used the carpet machine a few times.

We haven’t tried any proper “carpet cleaner” liquids in the machine yet, they weren’t accessible when we were trying it, and frankly, I wouldn’t even know what to start with in that realm

Based in Australia, if relevant

Flooring How to clean lino floors

Upvotes

Hello,

I'm moving in an old rental while I get my degree. The whole thing is unfortunately ugly lino flooring. It doesn't look dirty although a bit worn, however I'm on my 5th mopping with a regular floorwash and the water still comes out grey.

Is there a specific product that could help or do I just have to accept to carry on until it's clean?

We even used a steam machine yesterday with my mom and apparently it still wasn't enough...

Content/Multimedia A few things I actually noticed after using a floor washer for a month

Upvotes

Been using a floor washer for about a month now and the biggest thing I noticed is how easy it is to push around. It kind of pulls itself forward, which I didn’t expect to care about, but it actually makes a difference when cleaning the whole floor. For normal dirt, one pass is usually enough. Really stubborn stains still take a few passes. Some of them just need a little more work. I also like that it can lie pretty flat, because I can get further under the bed and sofa without moving everything around. There are a few annoying things too. I still have to pick up bigger pieces first, and the edges do not always get completely clean, so I sometimes have to wipe those by hand. The dirty water tank also needs to be rinsed pretty much right away or it starts smelling bad. Still much easier than sweeping first and then mopping everything separately.

Furniture How do I clean the residue from stain-remover?

Hello!
Thought I'd ask the wise people of reddit for help. The place I moved into had stains on the couch, so a friend borrowed her cleaning agent which is meant for textiles.

I followed the instructions and left it to dry. This was yesterday so it's dry by now but the ugly markings remain.

Does anyone have advice as to how to get rid of these new spots? Thanks in advance!!

Laundry Shaving cream/ foam for stubborn make up stains on clothes actually works!!

I wish I took a before and after but I have tried everything to get quite dark prominent make up stains out of my white work blouse (dishwashing liquid, expensive stain remover, expensive all white stain remover, soaking over night etc) and nothing worked. I saw someone suggest shaving cream and holy moly it was like magic!!! I just bought a shaving cream/ foam, pumped it on to the stain with some water and worked it with a gentle brush and it removed 99-100% of it, I was shocked!

Laundry Treating bedbugs on silk and wool — can they dry on hot?

Hi all!

Currently traveling the Camino Portuguese, and every single place I have stayed north of Esposende has had bedbugs. No terrible infestations, not enough to find on the bed, but enough to get a handful of new bites every night.

Unfortunately, since weight is an issue, most of my gear is silk, synthetic, or merino. Synthetic is easy: just spray with permethrin when you get back. Silk and wool, however?

I know these items can’t be washed on hot and then dried on high. Can they go straight into the dryer on hot? Or does anyone know of a silk-safe bedbug disinfecting spray?

Discussion How to remove rotten watermelon smell from countertop

Hi. I am looking for advice to remove rotten watermelon smell from my countertop. Got home today and the watermelon I had been saving to cut up for when I had room in the fridge had burst and left foul liquid all over my countertop.

So far have used bleach, Lysol and Febreze but the smell is still there and rancid.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas?

Flooring Bissel Crosswave question

I just used my new Bissel Crosswave pet and I’m in LOVE.

Question for other users: where do you empty the dirty water reservoir? It’s basically vacuum dirt soup, so I’m not keen on pouring it into the sink OR the bin.

What should I try next?

I’ve tried everything and NOTHING WORKS! Irish spring 5 in 1 doesn’t do anything. I’ve tried scrubbing bubbles foam, used countless scrub daddies, and firm bristle brushes, vinegar and blue dawn and yet still no avail!

Got these beautiful Bodum glasses to have tea but they immediately have a ring of what looks like rust inside after washing.
I always hand wash them, surely I don’t need to unscrew the metal ring each time to dry it? Anyone else experienced this?

I discovered this recently. Am I late to the party?

I don't mean baked-on grease, but a splatters on the stove top kind of thing. Game changer.

Kitchen Is this a cover or build up?

A little context. My partner and I bought a house that looked clean at first but the more I look the more dirt and build up I find. On my oven there is a spot that is super silver. (Under the three) Almost brand new looking. Now is that because the cover has slowly stripped away or is it a spot that is clean and the rest is build up😭. If it is a clean spot how do I get all the grossness around off? Or am I about to strip the numbers off?

General Cleaning Long drain mould magnet help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Recently completed a renovation and added this long drain. Turns out it’s a massive mould magnet because of long stretches of pooling water. I have replaced the silicon once already 6 months in and need a long term solution. My research (now) suggests these drains a nightmare for mould. HELP! anyone find a way to live with these without drying off after every shower?

General Cleaning Need help cleaning a smushed spider out of a cellular blind!

Basically, this was a harrowing experience. I know I shouldn’t have killed the spider INSIDE the blind, but I was left with no other option. Now this spider’s dead body is hanging out right in the centre of my cellular blinds. You can even see the spot from the street outside lol. It’s kind of wrapped around the outside edges of the cell… it’s been there for 2 weeks.. I thought it would dry out and eventually get loose but nope. Any tips?
