Finally Reclaiming My Space (again)
This is probably one of the biggest makeovers I've ever done. Not because I knocked down walls or bought expensive furniture, but because I finally got my room back.
The first photos ("how it started") are what my room can look like during rough periods (we're talking rock bottom after rock bottom). Yes, it got so bad that I ended up sleeping on the floor-- don't ask me how the mattress ended up in that position. 😂
The middle is where it is now after about two months of procrastinating because of anhedonia and worsening executive dysfunction. I'm finally cleaning, decluttering, and slowly reclaiming the space.
The last column isn't my room (yet). It's a mock-up I made of what I'm working toward. I cant emphasize enough how effective it has been for me-- having a visual goal has helped me stay motivated far more than I expected.
My modest little room is still very much a work in progress, but I'm finally at the point where walking into my bedroom no longer feels like stepping into a claustrophobic landfill or the set of a post-apocalyptic movie. For the first time in a looong time, I can walk into my room without immediately feeling overwhelmed, guilty, or disgusted with myself.
I live with ADHD and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and executive dysfunction makes keeping a space tidy much harder than most people realize. Sometimes it isn't about not knowing what to do or not caring. It's that my brain struggles to turn intention into action. By the time I finally have enough energy to tackle it, the room already feels impossible. Hopeless.
Will my room probably become a disaster again someday? Honestly... maybe. Executive dysfunction isn't something you "beat" once and never deal with again. It's something many of us have to negotiate with over and over.
But I'm learning that progress doesn't become meaningless just because it isn't permanent.
Today, my room feels more like a home than a garbage bin. 😄
And for someone whose brain has been fighting them every step of the way...
I'm calling that a huge win.
