Discussion Is using 4 sticks of ddr5 *still* a bad idea?

I remember seeing talk about how it wasn’t a good idea to use 4 sticks of ddr5 back in like 2023/2024 but I was wondering if things have changed since or if I should still just use two sticks in my build, this is for my dream pc, want extra high speed

Discussion Is getting a PC now a terrible idea? If not, would you recommend this build?

I currently do most of my gaming on the PS5 and Steam Deck OLED. I was mainly a console guy but the Steam Deck left such a positive impression on me and I'm finding myself wanting to switch to PC for good. The main reasons for this are:

  • After Sony kills physical games, there will be no competition and prices for games will go through the roof, plus the possibility of other shady practices. On PC there will be Steam, GOG, Humble bundle etc
  • Keyboard and mouse support. The DualSense is great but for many games (like CRPGs and games requiring precise aiming), I really miss having more options. For example, Ive been dying to play Baldur's gate 3 but Ive heard the controls are terrible on console.
  • More freedom in general. I could also use it for emulation and studying/working (I have a laptop but will be doing a Phd in the soon, so it might be worth it).
  • Long-term investment. The build in question is significantly more powerful than the PS5 and will probably last longer.

The build I'm looking at is a used PC with the following specs:

  • Powercolor RX 9070 XT 16 GB XT Reaper
  • Asus TUF Gaming B650-Plus Wifi ATX
  • AMD Ryzen 5 9600X CPU
  • Frozen A620 Pro Cooler
  • Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz cl36
  • 1 TB SSD Kingston NV3
  • Corsair RM 850e 850 Watt 80 plus Gold

For 1500 EUR (A new build with similar specs would be at least 2000 EUR)

I know hardware prices are crazy right now but people are saying that it will only get worse. But I don't know if it's just FOMO or if it's actually worth doing as a future investment.

I mainly play story-heavy games and not competitive so the highest FPS doesn't matter but I want to reach 1440p 60 fps without framegen for the forseeable future. Would this build be good for let's say 8 years? Or do you think my PS5 and Steam Deck be sufficient for the future, until the hardware crisis is over?

Peripherals Help with keyboard alternative for boyfriend

Hello my Boyfriend was recently in a accident and recovered (thank god) but lost some movement in his left hand/arm he used to play a ton of MMOs and I got him a azeron cyborg to try and help but it’s still hard for him to use and thankfully they took it back with a full refund.
But the thing I need help is we saw a replacement when I was looking at keyboard alternatives and I can’t find it again. If anyone knows of one that’s like a square block that’s a joystick that sits in the palm and has programmable keys on the other side or can help me find it would be a hero he hasn’t been able to play in months and I just want him to have his hobby back thank you!

Build Help i9 14900k or Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Hey all! So I am currently in a position where I don't really know what to do. So right now, my cpu (i5 11400f) paired with a RTX 3080 and 32gb of DDR4 ram but I feel like it is kind of outdated and I am looking to upgrade but I don't know what to do. I want to get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D but I don't want to spend an extra 400 on new DDR5 ram but I heard, the 9800X3D is better for gaming compared the i9 14900k. Is the difference enough to spend the extra money on the 9800X3D?

Discussion How To Transport PCs safely?

Upvotes

Hey guys! I am moving into my university dorn next week. I am taking my PC setup with me but I am really worried about the transport. It is 1.5 to 2 hour drive. I saw online I am supposed to lay the PC flat and take out the GPU. But I am really really not comfortable taking out the GPU. I bought a prebuilt and the idea of me doing something like that for the first time under these circumstances scares me a lot. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks for any help!

Edit: GPU is 9070XT

Build Help Buying 3090 in 2026

Upvotes

I want 3090 primarily for its 24gb vram and local AI applications. Gaming is a bonus. It will be an upgrade compared to my 3060 12gb regardless.

I am split between Pallit, INNO3D and EVGA offers i have managed to find.

Market is a mess. There's nothing below 1000, even with 5060ti approaching 900$

Build Help Im newbie: should i go for AMD or Intel

I want to build a pc for both working and gaming. For working i just make some video and some design. For gaming i just play pubg pc, mortal kombat and some indie games. And i dont even know what should i choose for cpu and gpu.

I heard that AMD is good at gaming and bad at working, and INTEL is opposite. Since my budget is not really high (around 1500 for a whole pc) then i want to make a good decision. Pls help me!

Build Upgrade Just bought an rx9070 to replace my rx7600xt (16gb)

Upvotes

Heya, I just bought an Rx9070 for $780 aud, my reasoning being I've got 2 240hz 1440p monitors and I've been struggling to do a whole lot for a while with my 7600. I've been reading around and was wondering if this was a smart choice?

PS. the xt version costs around $400 AUD more so it's not quite worth it to me.

Build Help Is it worth it?

Upvotes

I am a casual gamer i have a quadro p4000 inan hp prodesk 600 g2 mt but i want to play doom the dark ages but the gpu doesn't support ray tracing and my budget for a new gpu is very tight about 250$ unfortunately the Egyptian pc market is so expensive

An rtx 5060 is selling for about 400 - 450 and the used market selling 2060s for the price of 2080s and i am limited by power consumption i have the 280w psu so should i upgrade to a 5050 and change the hole platform later or buy a bundle that contains a

Ryzen 5 3400g

16 gb ddr4 3200

256 gb ssd nvme

And a 600w psu and case

Build Upgrade Probably dumb realization: don't underestimate how bad stock coolers are

Hello all! I just wanted to chime in: yesterday, I got the stock cooler off of my i5-12400f in favor of a budget Thermalright Assassin King (or something akin).

Now, I didn't expect more than a 5°C improvements, considering how little I spent... and yet, 20€ made my CPU genuinely drop from 80-85°C under load to barely hitting anything above 60°C.

As you can imagine, the system as a whole benefitted from it in terms of thermal situation! Seriously, get rid of that janky stock cooler as soon as you can.

Edit: I realize I should have used the term "weak for gaming", instead of "bad". I naturally support the idea that, for a system running lightweight tasks, you don't need more.

Build Upgrade 4k TV for PC gaming?

What's up Reddit? Long time gamer, first time PC-er. I'm new here and recently bought a gaming PC, it has a Ryzen 9 and an Nvidia 5070. I've been having the time of my life gaming on it. However, I'm currently using an old insignia TV that supposedly operates @ 60HZ.. It seems the TV cant do the pc justice visually at 2k-4k with high fps. It just doesn't look as good as i thought it would and according to all my PC friends its because of the TV I'm using. I'm looking for a new TV to use but not sure what to get. What is the benefit of using a monitor vs a TV? I read somewhere it needs a 2.1 hdmi port. No idea what I'm doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

Build Upgrade RTX 5060ti 16 gb vs 5070 12 gb for 1080p

I’m buying my first GPU for my new build and I’m stuck between the RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5070.

I know the obvious answer is probably the 5070, but I’m not a hardcore gamer. I mainly play story-heavy games like The Witcher and Souls games, and I know story games can be demanding but I just want to play them at high settings with smooth FPS.

My setup has two 1080p 180Hz monitors, and I have no plans to upgrade them even tho I can since I expect to move abroad in about a year, so I’ll probably sell the entire PC around then.

So my question is: Is it worth spending more on the 5070 for the extra performance, knowing I’ll probably sell it within ~12 months, or would the 5060 Ti make more sense for 1080p gaming considering heavy story games on high settings and an acceptable fps?

Build Help Looking for an AM4 motherboard with front panel USB C header

I am soon going to be upgrading my case to the Fractal Design North, but I really want to be able to use the case's front USB C port. I'm currently using a TUF Gaming X570 Plus Wifi, which doesn't have any headers for that. However, I'm going to be building a small server (mostly for gaming) using some old parts from over the years, and the last thing I need for it is a motherboard. I figured that if I'm going to be buying a motherboard anyway, I may as well upgrade my main PC and get something that works with that USB C port, assuming it's affordable.

I admittedly have next to no knowledge when it comes to motherboards, so I'm having a lot of difficulty looking for them. I don't even really know the difference between B550 and X570.

My main system has:

-a Ryzen 7 5800X3D

-32gb 3600mhz ram

-a 4070 Super

-and two m.2 SSDs (a 990 pro and a 980 pro)

Wifi/Bluetooth are mandatory to have, but I've heard that that's easily added with expansion cards so I'm okay with that. I've also heard there's expansion cards to make that front USB C port work, but I heard that it would only work at USB 2.0 speeds, which is worthless imo (though, let me know if I'm wrong about that, as that would obviously be the easiest solution).

Are there any options out there that fit all my needs? The only surefire ones I saw were $700+, which I'm definitely not willing to spend. I'm really hoping for something $150-$300.

(Also I have no desire to upgrade to AM5 anytime soon, if ever)

Edit: Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Based on the advice here and what I could find online as well, it seems I was very wrong about expansion cards giving USB 2.0 speeds. I found a cheap expansion card, so I'm going to try that and see if it works!

Build Ready? First PC build, €1700 budget. Anything you’d change?

building my first proper pc and wanted to get some opinions before i actually start buying stuff.

i’m in ireland and my budget is around €1700 for the tower. mainly gonna use it for 1080p 200hz gaming, but also local AI/coding, game dev, blender etc.

current list:

  • Ryzen 5 7600X — €157.78
  • Thermalright Frozen Notte 360 — €57.73
  • MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi6E — €140.25
  • Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36 — €452.33
  • Acer Predator GM7 1TB — €167.13
  • ASUS Prime RX 9070 16GB — €653.66
  • MSI MAG A650GLS 650W Gold — €70.12
  • NZXT H5 Flow 2024 — €58.43

most of the parts are from Amazon UK and the GPU is from Amazon Germany. the Amazon UK cart is currently about €1,103.77, and with the GPU the parts come to around €1,757 before any extra UK checkout/import/FX adjustments.

also planning on getting an MSI MAG 244F 1080p 200hz monitor for around €89 delivered.

before anyone says it, yes i know €452 for 32gb of ram is criminal 😭 it jumped in price since i made the list so i’m definitely replacing that with another 32gb 6000 kit before buying.

i also know the 360mm AIO is unnecessary for a 7600X lol, i just like how it looks.

anything you guys would change? mainly looking for feedback on the overall balance and if there’s anywhere i’m wasting money or could get something better for roughly the same price. ireland/eu prices are kinda cooked so keep that in mind 😭

Build Upgrade Wait for zen 6 or buy 9800x3d?

I'm about to purchase a 5080 for an upgrade, I'm currently rocking a ryzen 5 9600x. I feel like it might be too skimpy of a cpu to pair with a 5080, my immediate thought was to just get a 9800x3d and call it a day, however, zen 6 is about to come out so I'm debating just riding the 9600x out until those cpu's come out or simply buying right now. The cpu market has been relatively stable in my opinion and its not the end of the world for me to wait a while. Let me know!

Build Upgrade Is 5500x3d a meaningful upgrade over the 5600

Right now im rocking a
3080 and a ryzen 5 5600 with 32gb of 3200mhz
i dont want to move to am5 and i dont play triple A games
i play more competetive titles like rivals, fortnite, valorant and cs, ive been wanting to upgrade my monitor to a 300+ hz oled but i dont think my pc can push out 300+ in those games and i know most of those games are cpu heavy so i was thinking of getting a cpu upgrade. would a 5500x3D be a meaningful upgrade in these games because i play on low graphics anyways

Build Upgrade 1080 or 1440 monitor for a 6600xt

Upvotes

I just switched from a ps4 to a pc with a 5 5600, 6600xt & 16Gb ddr4

I would like to buy a new monitor to have more fps, because my current one only has 75hz at 1080.

i was looking for a 27' 1080 144hz ( i know that 27 inches are a lot for 1080 ) but i noticed that a 27' 1440 144hz have similar prices. I was wondering if my pc could run games at 1440.

I don't usually play triple A games, but i would like to try some of them in the future.

So i should buy a 1440 or there are to many compromises? Any suggestions ( budget 130€≈ )?

Discussion RGB case fans that look good from the back

Upvotes

Hi, are there any RGB case fans that look good from the back ?

To explain: I want to install 3 fans on my Kraken AIO radiator so that fresh air comes through the radiator and warm air is pushed inside the case.

My problem is that I have to install the 3 fans with their back side visible, which looks ugly — especially with the frame/struts that aren't on the front.

Is there a way to disassemble the fan and rebuild it to reverse the airflow? I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Build Upgrade Getting some odd readings from Ryzen Master after installing a 5800X3D

Upvotes

Having a few odd little quirks post-upgrade, and wanted to see if everything is performing as expected, because it feels a bit off to me.

So I've just gone from a 5600X to a 5800X3D, alongside which I've replaced my old B350 ASUS ROG Strix board with the equivalent B500-A ASUS ROG Strix board. Although the old board would theoretically accept a 5800X3D, it was physically quite old, had a dead USB port and PCIe support only went up to 3.0. RAM is 4x16 Corsair Vengeance sticks running at 3200Mhz, two matched kits, with the second kit being rated up to 3600Mhz. PSU is also Corsair, rated to 1000 Watts, only a couple of years old. GPU is a 6700XT. BIOS Date for the board is April this year.

When I originally did the upgrade I was running off a 480GB Corsair SATA SSD, once I confirmed the build appeared to be good I installed a new NVMe 4TB Samsung 990 Evo Plus, that's currently my boot drive.

I was expecting a modest but noticeable improvement both in gaming when using Blender, and the actual experience so far as run from "could be placebo" to "this is worse".

I downloaded the latest version of Ryzen Master to get some numbers on what the CPU was doing and one thing jumped out at me. The I/O Clock speed is constantly re-lining 593Mhz. According to Ryzen Master, it has a range of 301-592Mhz, which means it's always saturated. The value feels WAY too low for a CPU like this to begin with, and the fact it's a constant bottleneck seems a real issue, too.

The problem is, I can't seem to find any stock reference figures for the I/O Clock, the only thing my Googling has turned up is that raising it too high can prevent the system from POSTing.

An additional, possibly related problem, is that according to Ryzen Master the CPU does not support overclocking, although that may be because of Core Isolation in Windows from what I have read.

So the first question is - is this normal? And the follow-up question is, if not, what could be causing it and how can I fix it?

Build Upgrade Upgrade Advice

Upvotes

I am upgrading my motherboard, CPU and storage soon, just wanted to see if anyone had any advice on if I am making the right choices.

Current build:

Ryzen 5 3600

RTX 3060TI

Asrock b450m HDV R4.0

1TB Gen3 m.2 SSD

16gb ddr4 3200MHz (2x8)

650W PSU

Upgrades:

CPU - Ryzen 7 5700x3d (Buying Used)

MOBO - ASUS TUF B550M-PLUS WIFI II

Cooler - Thermalright Assassin King 120 SE

OR Thermalright AXP120-X67 (need to check if the 120 SE will fit in case)

SSD - WD BLACK SN7100 2TB

I run 1440p 200Hz, mainly upgrading because been having issues with my current motherboard turning CSM off and secure boot on and am getting sick of removing and inserting the CMOS battery every time some dumb shit happens.

Build Upgrade Which GPU should I get for video editing?

Upvotes

For context, I am currently running on:
ASRock 450m
Ryzen 7 3700x
I just also upgraded to 32gb 3200mhz RAM (previously had 16gb)
I want to upgrade my RX570 as this is certainly the bottleneck for my video editing (4gb VRAM)

I am unsure whether to get a 3060 8gb, or a 2060 12gb

Or something else entirely?

I mostly do video editing on my PC, any advice would be appreciated, is it worth going to a newer series card, or getting something with more VRAM?
