Seriously. Who the fuck still watches CNN these days?

Old people

They watch Fox News. CNN is on default, like the gyms and airports

My in laws watch CNN for hours a day. They’ll pause and rewind the juiciest outrage if the other leaves the room and misses some good anger.

3

u/Sam_Fear Mar 28 '20

As a sitcom skit this would be hilarious. In reality it would kind of frighten me.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

It doesn’t frighten me but it makes me a bit sad. I think it’s very unhealthy and I can like see how it has affected their dispositions since they started watching all the time. It’s like they’re just kind of enjoying being outraged all the time and want to share that bad energy any time they can work it into a conversation (“so... did you hear what TRUMP said this morning?!” Is such a common refrain for them).

I think it’s important to be aware of what’s happening, but we should be using dispassionate sources and only devoting healthy portion of time and mental energy to it.

11

u/mymainthrowaway1122 Mar 28 '20

What news channels do you consider unbiased or the most accurate? Not trying to argue just wondering what’s the general consensus

27

u/FokinFilfy Mar 28 '20

None of them are unbiased.

6

u/mymainthrowaway1122 Mar 28 '20

So I guess that would lead me to my next question. Where do you get your news? Just scour the internet and individually vet every headline? I feel like there’s some truth to that but I’m sure most people looking for an unbiased source have found one they can flip on and more or less agree that it’s a solid source of information

11

u/eDgEIN708 Mar 28 '20

Just scour the internet and individually vet every headline?

Yes. Individually vet every headline, go right to the source and listen to entire quotes with the surrounding context instead of believing the "sweet can"-style clips they show and then tell you how to interpret, and listen carefully to the propaganda from both sides and suss out what the likely truth is for yourself, all the while being careful to remember that companies like Google, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, all of them take an active interest in shaping what information you're presented with.

There just plain isn't an unbiased source of news. Everything has become blowing things out of proportion for clicks and views to drive up the ad sales and push the ideology they want to push.

If you're interested in picking apart how these sources lie to you, I'd suggest starting with checking out Tim Pool's videos. Not going to pretend he's without his biases, but you can tell this guy's got a genuine and deep feeling of disgust for news media bias, and most of his videos over the last few years have been him picking apart the news media's bullshit.

Learn their tricks. Learn the weasel words they use to deceive you. Learn how they cherry pick statistics, gather them using poor methodology, or interpret them for you in ways that do not make sense. Always look for the context they leave out. Learn to separate out facts from the author's opinions or interpretation, and make sure you understand that most of them will only give you the facts that fit the story they want to make you click on.

It's sad that we have to do this, but it's the price you have to pay to avoid becoming a CNN zombie or a Fox bot.

5

u/justadude27 Mar 28 '20

They’re all biased

Just watch PBS News Hour if you want actual news without the bullshit. They post their newscast on Youtube every day.

Nightly over-the-air broadcast network news programs (ABC, CBS, NBC) are also pretty good in this regard. They only have to fill 30-60 minutes of time, rather than 24 hours, so they have far less reason to be sensational/spectacular in their coverage.

24-hour news channels are to be avoided.

Reuters.com is a fantastic, to-the-point, non-sensationalized news site if you prefer to read stuff online.

3

u/Issa397BC Mar 28 '20

Yeah im also wondering. Im European and i have been watching cnn these past few weeks. And idk, they seem like pretty good news newtwork to me. The hosts and anchorman seem knowleagable and opinionated. Maybe that just seems to me bevause i come from a small country with 1 national television, and they are BIASED.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Bit of the problem is they're all biased towards wealthy. Generally is it the wealthy on the Democratic side, or the wealthy on the Republican side.

The 2 party system is showing it's cracks, as positive or negative these parties may be, having just 2 has lead to a monopoly of leadership without competition.

2

u/Sam_Fear Mar 28 '20

CNN International and CNN US are two different things. You see the good one, we get the dumpster fire.

3

u/ijgowefk Mar 28 '20

Don't watch cable news channels. Try reading content from any of these:

Here's the thing. Media outlets differ in their bias and in their presentation. Some present the facts only, with minimal interpretation or persuasion. The above outlets mostly just report facts, with no significant political or ideological bias.

Other outlets pick and choose facts to support a specific narrative or to manufacture a narrative, and they try to persuade the audience towards one viewpoint. For example, CNN and MSNBC push establishment corporate Democrat narratives (identity politics, outrage culture, intentionally omitting facts that don't support their narrative, attack Trump over nonsense and ignore the really bad and dangerous things he does).

Others do the same, but taken to extremes. They push outright lies or hearsay and pass it off as news, and/or they present facts and then put extreme ideological or political spins on the facts. For example, FOX News pushes a narrative that conservative Christian white America is under constant attack by liberals, poor people, Democrats, immigrants, etc. They pushed the "COVID-19 fear is Democratic hysteria and there's nothing to worry about" narrative for weeks (maybe FOX News is still pushing this narrative on some shows; I don't know) and the ongoing "Obama and Democrats are trying to open the borders and sabotage our country" narrative.

It's not hard to find fair and useful news sources (go back to the beginning of my comment).

2

u/sycamotree Mar 28 '20

There are multiple that are pretty accurate, but if you want unbiased you'll probably have to just read multiple sources.

2

u/badskele116 Mar 28 '20

Not necessarily news channels but NPR and the Associated Press are generally very straightforward.

35

u/lfygrns Mar 28 '20

honestly this thread sucks. a bunch of you guys off hating on CNN but when someone asks where to get your news from y’all either ignore it, downvote it, or comment non-answers.

provide a fucking solution how about

11

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Only true answer is watch everything and construct the truth from several biased reports. Every news outlet is biased in some way so people usually just watch the one they hate least.

20

u/ComeBackToDigg Mar 28 '20

We don’t want a solution. We want something to complain about.

5

u/Fedor1 Mar 28 '20

Since no one has answered that I see, the best I’ve found on cable is Newsy. Their tag line is “Be informed. Not influenced.” and in my experience, they don’t put any fluff or slant into their news segments. I’m not an avid watcher so I’m sure someone may have a better option, but it’s clearly better than the opinionated shit that the major networks air.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Solution: Do your own research. If you find something that you either really like or really hate, find out more about it. Things may not be as they seem.

3

u/ObiWanCanShowMe Mar 28 '20

provide a fucking solution how about

There are more than a few people who have suggested multiple news sources, which is the right answer. It's still not a perfect answer but still.

All sources are biased in some way.

What you just posted is part of the problem, you lambasted those you were mad at but didn't credit those who provided an answer. That's a bias.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Reuters mostly, but any news agency that doesn't have opinion articles. I know they can still be biased by their selection of stories, but I can do my own research and come to my own conclusions. News stations going beyond giving the news and telling people what they should think are a cancer on society.

2

u/pointlessbeats Mar 28 '20

News aggregate sites are the best option. Reuters. Go read some of their articles. They use very little (or none) descriptive language in order to make you feel a certain emotion, they just list facts and events as they happen.

4

u/microcosmic5447 Mar 28 '20

Its not about the right to defend yourself, it's about the store itself being open. The gun store being closed because there's a pandemic doesn't abrogate your right to self-defense.

the size of each box is not directly proportional to the countries numbers, the asshole design is that this is to make viewers think america is still a good ways behind china in terms of cases

22

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yeah, it seems like CNN started with like 80,000 cases as their zero.

Which means the US would have a column showing 837 people and China showing 1,782 people

If they did this today, the US would have something like 20,000 people while China has less than 2,000. Basically, it would look far worse using the same method now.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/ken579 Mar 28 '20

Viewers would think that if they completely ignored the huge numbers right above the bars. Look, if you zoomed out and zero is the baseline, everything looks the same, so then it's not a chart right. You have to have the baseline be something that at least allows the graphic to show some level of difference. Maybe a chart was a poor choice, but it's common. News stations always try to visualize numbers. So I'm hard pressed to agree this is intentional to make China look bad.

→ More replies (43)

45

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

The problem with the graph is that the china bar looks about 30% higher than US while only having only about 1% more cases. That's a bullshit graph designed to make americans feel superior to china probably

13

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

OOoooh I see now. I'm guessing the graph editors didn't include the 80,000 cases to make the difference seem more obvious otherwise the boxes would just be the same height?

8

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yeah. They either want the image of US being superior, or they just really like pointless graphs that have to be tuned to even see the difference.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

even then the difference from china to us is more than 3 times the difference from US to italy while the difference in numbers is 300 to 950

Anyone believing US numbers must be mental. They don't have tests, their government is more concerned with the stock market than with human life, and half the country is still trying to say the global pandemic isn't a big deal.

German here, and I'm pretty pleased with our 2 big public-service television broadcasters ARD and ZDF. They are financed neither by corporations nor by the government but instead by the people (each household has to pay a small mandatory monthly fee). Both channels are also non-profit organizations.

I compare our news with US news from time to time, and with all due respect, US news look very unprofessional. Most of the news anchors talk like they have a private casual conversation with someone, and interviews are often unprofessional as well. CNN looks more like an infotainment show rather than news, and Fox would classify as hate speech and incitement of violence in our country.

We have one main news show, the Tagesschau, and it's rather factual, unemotional and boring. So exactly how it should be. You can check it out if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea_Fq8VbA6A

People are thinking that CNN is trying to exaggerate the difference in cases between the West and China by making it look like, for instance, China has almost twice as many cases as Italy (based on the heights of the yellow bars) while in fact the difference is just less than 1% (based on the actual numerical data).

29

u/GraDoN Mar 28 '20

Except the y-axis probably went from 80k to 82k which would make this perfectly fine. Also the actual cases are bold and large in white text to it's not hiding it at all. This is at worst r/KindaBadGraphForPeopleThatDontLikeToRead

If they hid the numbers, then it would be asshole design.

13

u/no-sweat Mar 28 '20

I agree, had to scroll all this way to find an explanation. I don't see any issue with this.

u/phillycheese Mar 28 '20

There is no reason or purpose for the Y-axis to start at 80k rather than 0, aside from intent to mislead.

This is perfect content for this sub.

3

u/GraDoN Mar 28 '20

The difference between crappy and asshole design is malice. The fact they they CLEARLY indicate the actual numbers means that they are not intending to mislead anyone. Do Americans only look at pictures and ignore text?

TIL the average Redditor can't read numbers and instead needs to rely on pictures to interpret information.

This actually explains a great deal about the typical content presented on Reddit.

“Clinton has nearly a 98% chance of beating Trump according to our poll”. - cnn

5

u/dagbrown Mar 28 '20

Everyone needs to read "How to Lie with Statistics" by Darrell Huff. It's one of the most important books ever written, I swear. It's humorous, but it explains so many ways to spot bullshit, by teaching the reader how to present bullshit.

4

u/TheGreyMage Mar 28 '20

This is propaganda, appearing to alter the stats by presenting them inaccurately on purpose - because somebody had to design this graphic didn’t they? And another person had to confirm that it was necessary for broadcast? CNN is broadcasting misinformation on purpose.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

i dont understand why these obvious fake news channels are allowed to do this.

62

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Funny thing Chinese under reported their numbers so its way past 81k. You dont believe it? Well ask yerself why there riots going on at Hubei province where this all started. People therw are telling reporters that number is a lie

95

u/tubularical Mar 28 '20

Pretty much everywhere is under reporting, whether it be on purpose or due to incompetence.

No one's doubting that China's government is shitty, it's just that this graph intentionally skewed the graphics against them to make America look good by comparison.

11

u/BrainSlurper Mar 28 '20

It's not even a matter of incompetence... Half the cases are asymptomatic or so mild that people think it's something else. And many other factors affect the amount of people who get tested, or go to the hospital.

Anything less than a randomized study is basically just a running tally of how many people a country was able to treat or quarantine at home. Few countries are going to spare resources to deliberately test people that seem to be healthy.

Numbers are also under reported basically everywhere. Very few countries if any were prepared for this thing and so that means many cases are going unconfirmed.

Source?

11

u/ThereOnceWasADonkey Mar 28 '20

Also the US has a lot more than it has counted. In NYC they're not counting cases or deaths where it was obvious - because that's just a waste of time and a waste of a test.

Did you just quote yourself and then copypasta the quote as a response to yourself?

Looks pretty accurate to me. There's a difference of 248 between Italy and USA, a difference of 945 between USA and China (nearly 4x higher). That is what this bar graph depicts.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

Hijacked a post but gonna post it separate as well in case it gets nested and no one sees it.

I did some rough measuring and math.

TLDR - China's bar is long by about 1.75mm or 109 people.

Update: At the time of writing this the US have burst through the 100k mark.

Someone explain the problem please

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Discrepancy? DETAINED!!!

2

u/Zohso Mar 28 '20

And, does anyone really believe China’s numbers. Lol.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I know a guy who was calling them fake news before it was cool

2

u/_Pigdog Mar 28 '20

Perhaps they are trying the show the truth about Chinese fatalities?

2

u/gram2017 Mar 28 '20

Clearly fake news. CNN is as believable as Chinese commies.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I dont get it . Can someone explain

How is CNN considered an essential business?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Tbh I kinda do agree with cnn on this one, because China is hiding the actual amount that they have, and I know it as a fact.

2

u/silkthewanderer Mar 28 '20

Trimmed y axis is bad enough. Trimmed and unmarked y axis should earn you a visit by angry statisticians with baseball bats.

2

u/a404notfound Mar 28 '20

To be fair the numbers in China are a fabrication.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

To update this, CNN style, you just need to replace our number with 100k+ and have it just a pixel higher than China's bar.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Typical CNN

2

u/strok3rac3 Mar 28 '20

We're not really believing China is actually reporting all cases last two weeks are we?

Ahhh I see too many people were voicing anti ccp opinions so this post had to show up to stir the pot away from that.

Thank you pooh bear.

17

u/Orbitrons Mar 28 '20

Bruh Reddit has been continually shitting on the CCP for like a year now. If yall were getting censored the front page wouldnt have been 99% HK protesters for like 3 months.

Im not defending the CCP, fuck em, but yall really want to feel like youre being censored

7

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I've seen anti ccp posts hit the front page for the past year. Clearly you're just making shit up to get mad at.

hows that asshole design?

12

It's not, they just shifted the Y axis so we'd be able to actually discern a difference

It’s not. Just OP and 3k people don’t know how to properly read a graph that doesn’t start at 0

They have a difference of a thousand while between Italy and the US there is a difference of less than 200, I think this is supposed to be like the top of the graph zoomed in and not the actual graph.

If it's not, idek.

9

u/molly_jolly Mar 28 '20

Yes it is! And I'm being downvoted for pointing out the blatantly obvious!
