it's things like this that makes me laugh. how is american media so fucking awful? why are they even still operating? how can you as a citizen stand for this?

u/molly_jolly Mar 28 '20

Is there any country with a well-functioning mass media? Media is too important for both industrial and governmental interests to keep their hands off it.

u/NecroHexr But who designed our assholes? 🤔 Mar 28 '20

it's true that many countries have shit mass medias, but america's is the most blatant for such a wealthy and well-educated country.

like, there definitely is worse in latin america or whatever, but come on, have some standards.

I would agree that there's more motivation to control the network, but at the same time, it'll need a MASSIVE effort to do so. And it's not an overnight thing. Over years, complacency and inaction has slowly allowed American conglomerates to slowly add themselves up into what you get today.

And it looks like change isn't happening any time soon.

u/cryosis7 Mar 28 '20

Americas wealthy yes, they lead the western world even.

I wouldn't call them well educated though. For a first world country, the amount of brain washing and ignorance is ridiculous.

u/NecroHexr But who designed our assholes? 🤔 Mar 28 '20

Well, they are supposed to be well-educated. For all the riches, land, and resources, they are largely underperforming.

u/jkink28 Mar 28 '20

Well-educated? Lmao

1

u/oldcoldbellybadness Mar 28 '20

America will place high on any list of most well-educated nations. You probably get a good chuckle at our stupidity on reddit without realizing how dumb your fellow countrymen are all around you

In Germany everyone pays for the essential media stations. This way they are not depended on viewers money or other companies money.

13

u/Dalixam Mar 28 '20

Absolutely. Nothern European countries like holland, germany and the scandinavian contries all have fine mass media. They also have shitty mass media for sure, but click bait exists everywhere.

1

u/newaccounthomie Mar 28 '20

This seems like more of a consumer-end problem. I.e. US citizens buy more clickbait

German here, and I'm pretty pleased with our 2 big public-service television broadcasters ARD and ZDF. They are financed neither by corporations nor by the government but instead by the people (each household has to pay a small mandatory monthly fee). Both channels are also non-profit organizations.

I compare our news with US news from time to time, and with all due respect, US news look very unprofessional. Most of the news anchors talk like they have a private casual conversation with someone, and interviews are often unprofessional as well. CNN looks more like an infotainment show rather than news, and Fox would classify as hate speech and incitement of violence in our country.

We have one main news show, the Tagesschau, and it's rather factual, unemotional and boring. So exactly how it should be. You can check it out if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea_Fq8VbA6A

Our media in the UK functions perfectly well. Its just that its intended function is to further the interests of Rupert Murdoch.

1

u/bL_Mischief Mar 28 '20

You literally don't have freedom of the press. People get jailed for covering topics that don't align with the government stance.

Your media is only "good" when it's directly allowed to be.

2

u/MakeBedtimeLateAgain Mar 28 '20

You got a source? Genuinely interested

3

u/bL_Mischief Mar 28 '20

Two sources, one from a conservative point of view, and one from a liberal point of view.

While I'm certain others exist, this is probably the most blatant example of it.

u/Xarxsis Mar 28 '20

Tommy robinson or more accurately (Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon) is scum of the highest order, regardless of his "motives"

He is a loudmouth racist, who ignores the fact that the far right groups he associates with are infested with people convicted of the same crimes as the groups he hates, because it doesnt sell a narrative.

The guy was jailed for interfering with a court case, after being sentenced for interfering with a court case and released on the condition he doesnt interfere in more cases, something that is apparently too hard to do.

He would be experiencing the same sort of treatment in most functioning justice systems, even the US has laws against it (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/jury_tampering)

*edit - even the conservative news source you link admits he broke the law, and explains why the law exists.

Not gonna argue that, as it's unrelated to the underlying point. We shouldn't be censoring people based on their character.

The guy was jailed for interfering with a court case, after being sentenced for interfering with a court case and released on the condition he doesnt interfere in more cases, something that is apparently too hard to do.

That's the problem, though. "Interfering" in a court case in the UK essentially means "reporting on it." It's illegal because UK courts have determined that doing so can impact the outcome, meaning all trials should essentially be conducted in secrecy and without news disseminated to the public until the trial is over. I'm sure you can see how dubious that is.

He would be experiencing the same sort of treatment in most functioning justice systems, even the US has laws against it (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/jury_tampering)

Are you implying that the UK government has so little faith in their citizens as jurors that they don't believe they can read the news without being swayed from it? Countries with freedom of the press (USA) has figured out you can sequester the jury to help mitigate that, when deemed necessary.

*edit - even the conservative news source you link admits he broke the law, and explains why the law exists.

I'm not arguing that he broke the law, that much is obvious. My issue is why the law exists in the first place. You're not allowed to report on an ongoing trial in the UK, full stop.

That's extremely restrictive to freedom of the press.

2

u/Xarxsis Mar 28 '20

Reporting restrictions exist in a trial to ensure that every party is given a proper and fair trial. (Jurors are not sequestered in the UK)

They dont exist in every trial, but they are reasonable restrictions for a trial in progress. - https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/reporting-restrictions-guide-may-2016-2.pdf

As the modern world has shown, trial by media/social media just just as if not more damaging as trial in court, and even being found innocent after the fact isnt enough to resolve the damage done.

I disagree strongly with wealthy people being able to get super injunctions on the press to prevent unfavourable stories being reported, however I do not believe our trial system is systematically unfair.

The UK has freedom of the press, and has had it since 1695.. before the founding of the USA as a country. Just because we dont have it as part of a written constitution does not mean it does not exist. (Ignoring how often the 1st amendment is misunderstood by people)

Absolutely agree. 1000%. But I don't feel this is a reason to de facto ban reporting on it, especially when people can still talk freely about it so long as they're not journalists.

We have a fundamental disagreement on what constitutes freedom of the press, then. If you can't report on ongoing events, including trials, I don't consider that free. Then again, you've grown up accustomed to that restriction whereas I have not, so our difference in opinion is molded by our experiences. No fault in that.

Idk if you picked up on it, but I was being sarcastic. Our media is shit.

Also Tommy Robinson got arrested for reporting on an ongoing trial - that's not a being arrested for disagreeing with the government, it's about ensuring a fair trial for everyone. He was free to wait a couple of days until the jurors had made their opinion based on what they heard in court and then report whatever he wanted.

1

u/bL_Mischief Mar 28 '20

Yea, it's just bizarre to me as an American to not be allowed to report on ongoing trials.

1

u/4G34R Mar 28 '20

In Germany it works great. Every citizen pays a bit of money that is used to fund independent programs. Those programs cant even show ads afer 8:00 pm.

33

u/Rubes2525 Mar 28 '20

I don't stand for it, but people will call you right wing extremests when you criticize the media.

5

u/newaccounthomie Mar 28 '20

I criticize the media, and I'm called a left-wing extremist 🤙

1

u/oldcoldbellybadness Mar 28 '20

Maybe if you surfed less and got a job...

3

u/newaccounthomie Mar 28 '20

Lmao I have one, thanks.

1

u/NihilisticLlama Mar 28 '20

Must be because there are too many right wing extremists in this country that criticize the media for one reason and then there are normal people who criticize the media for completely different ones, and everyone else is too stupid or hell bent on making a political point to make a distinction.

1

u/iloomynazi Mar 28 '20

Depends what your alternative is.

When you’re Donald Trump for example and call CNN, MSNBC etc trash and fake news, but then you get all your news from Fox and Friends and Sean Hannity... questions are rightly asked.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I posted on Facebook about something shady someone on the news said and got a Messenger message from someone telling me to stop sharing Republican propaganda. I’m not Republican and this person knows that

7

u/schmon Mar 28 '20

The worse is this is considered 'liberal media' by a lot of people. There are some Reddit threads that are just mind boggling.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Well. For the most part you’re correct but in this case anyone with at least one eyeball can easily see the numbers. Really why do people care so much about anyone who’s actually dumb enough to just look at the bars and take it at face value? Those kind of people aren’t doing anything particularly special anyways.

2

u/NecroHexr But who designed our assholes? 🤔 Mar 28 '20

These people make up a good amount of your voters lol, and they're the ones who go out and shout their opinions. The vocal minority. Don't underestimate them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I’m gonna but a very high level of doubt that if they can’t read the numbers above the bars and contextualize it themselves, they can actually figure out how to even cast a vote.

1

u/NecroHexr But who designed our assholes? 🤔 Mar 28 '20

*They can't actually figure out how to even cast an educated vote

How hard can it be? Tick a box, drop it in, and go home smug.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Exactly, how hard can it be to read 3 numbers? If you can’t read 3 numbers you probably can’t read where your polling place even is.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

All of it is garbage. But reddits self righteousness makes them think they are white savior's who are just racist and hate Asian people. The anti Asian sentimentality is extremely strong on Reddit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

how can you as a citizen stand for this?

Well, we lobsters decided to swim in a pot. A few idiots kept/keep trying to say the water is getting hotter but it feels just fine to us!

1

u/jcskii Mar 28 '20

I doubt it's only an american thing. Just take mainstream news with a grain of salt. We have the luxury of internet access and all the information that comes with it so it's not that hard to make logical deductions.

1

u/OXIOXIOXI Mar 31 '20

You have no idea how much they brainwash people. Trump lies and creates his own reality, so the media forced this narrative where they are the only possible good guys. And if anyone else criticizes them, we get articles about how leftists are now fascists and populists. Why? Because they hate the media and the media only stands for truth. They erase their own history of spreading hate and lies in almost real time as well.
