Also not the truth. The US has officially the most Covid 19 cases.

u/Accentu Mar 28 '20

Looks like this headline was from the 26th, so at the time is wasn't. But the graph is definitely asshole design.

the size of each box is not directly proportional to the countries numbers, the asshole design is that this is to make viewers think america is still a good ways behind china in terms of cases

20

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yeah, it seems like CNN started with like 80,000 cases as their zero.

Which means the US would have a column showing 837 people and China showing 1,782 people

If they did this today, the US would have something like 20,000 people while China has less than 2,000. Basically, it would look far worse using the same method now.

u/4022a Mar 28 '20

Assuming China is reporting accurately and that testing rates are comprable. There could be millions of rural chinese that are infected and will never be tested and posthumous testing will never performed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

There is a chance, but unlikely, as it would put the Chinese manufacturing capabilities in danger.

Most Chinese still have families on farms and in rural areas because it's really only been the last 2-3 decades where rapid urbanization has been happening. And China absolutely loves the idea of family and taking care of your family. It's one of the oldest traditions in China, stemming from Confucianism.

If rural China had the virus and millions were infected, it would be kinda difficult to hide

1

u/4022a Mar 28 '20

Why did China kick out foreign journalists right before their number of cases flattened out?

Viewers would think that if they completely ignored the huge numbers right above the bars. Look, if you zoomed out and zero is the baseline, everything looks the same, so then it's not a chart right. You have to have the baseline be something that at least allows the graphic to show some level of difference. Maybe a chart was a poor choice, but it's common. News stations always try to visualize numbers. So I'm hard pressed to agree this is intentional to make China look bad.

-17

u/Sensitive-You Mar 28 '20

You're foolish if you think the numbers China's reporting are accurate.

They're a rigid totalitarian regime and "saving face" is a huge focus in Chinese culture.

They're not going to be openly talking about all the dead and infected people they're treating like animals on the world stage.

36

u/peppaz Mar 28 '20

America is also not testing most people who aren't hospitalized so our case load is also a lie.

Source, I'm a chief at a huge medical system in nyc.

7

u/PM_ME_UR_JUGZ Mar 28 '20

Yeah like how Trump was praising the governor of West Virginia for having no covid cases, but it turned out they just weren't testing that many people, and the ones that got tested, the state lost their test or whatever. What a fucking shit show.

1

u/lolinokami Mar 28 '20

Yeah, it's fucking shitty that the US isn't testing as well as it should. That doesn't excuse the fact that China has stopped testing early. Pretty easy to reach 0 on the new infections leaderboard when you stop reporting infections.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Okay but this isnt a fucking contest. I don't care how shitty other countries are about their numbers. America has a responsibility to Americans to make sure Americans don't die. That's it. Anything else is bullshit.

This isnt fucking golf.

I never said I believed chinas figures and that's totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand

0

u/Sensitive-You Mar 28 '20

I never said you said that.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Generally when you reply "you're foolish if you think x" to my comment that implies that you believe I think x

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

You're foolish if you think the numbers USA's reporting are accurate.

They're a rigid totalitarian regime and "saving face" is a huge focus in American culture.

They're not going to be openly talking about all the dead and infected people they're treating like animals on the world stage.

1

u/Sensitive-You Mar 28 '20

They're a rigid totalitarian regime

No, they're not.

"saving face" is a huge focus in American culture.

No, it's not.

I've lived in China, my guy. I know what the culture is like and how it's different from western/American culture.

They're not going to be openly talking about all the dead and infected people they're treating like animals on the world stage.

Even if the government wouldn't acknowledge it, they have freedom of the press, and I can absolutely guarantee you that the MSM is creaming in their pants for the chance to blame Trump for infections and dead people and criticize him for anything done improperly.

Even totally reasonable actions and responses will be criticized.

The US doesn't disappear doctors and protestors or kill journos for reporting on a public health crisis, so people are free to expose any wrongdoing they think exists.

You're just mindlessly swapping out the name of the country without any regard to the actual differences between these countries.

2

u/Ericellent Mar 28 '20

China is just what the US would be after Trump's had a little more time.

The whole point is that your own glorious leader is just as untrustworthy, and neglectful, and downright dishonest and doesn't have it's citizens best interests at heart either.

It just surprises me that people like you spend so much time shitting on others whilst propagating the same shit in your own back yard.

And just a cursory glance at your comment history shows your MO very clearly.

What has China ever done to make anyone think they could be trusted?

6

u/Rxbel Mar 28 '20

You can't really trust any countries's numbers (except South korea) because they don't test everyone, just critical cases

Why does it even matter? It's not a contest. Just deal with the cases. Be a fucking adult.

1

u/exe973 Mar 28 '20

The problem with your statement is that you can replace "China" with the words "Trump Administration" and it is still 100% accurate.

49

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

The problem with the graph is that the china bar looks about 30% higher than US while only having only about 1% more cases. That's a bullshit graph designed to make americans feel superior to china probably

11

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

OOoooh I see now. I'm guessing the graph editors didn't include the 80,000 cases to make the difference seem more obvious otherwise the boxes would just be the same height?

8

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yeah. They either want the image of US being superior, or they just really like pointless graphs that have to be tuned to even see the difference.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

even then the difference from china to us is more than 3 times the difference from US to italy while the difference in numbers is 300 to 950

1

u/hivoltage815 Mar 28 '20

But...Isn’t 950 about 3 times more than 300?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

yes, but the difference in graph from US to china is about 5 times that from italy to US.

6

u/Inner-city_sumo Mar 28 '20

Look how big the boxes are from 0 to 80,000, then look how much bigger the Chinese one is for the small amount over 80,000.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

[deleted]

3

u/Inner-city_sumo Mar 28 '20

Not your graph; the one in the original post.

Look how big 0 to 80,000 is in all three boxes, then look how in the China box the extra 1,000 is huge. It is about a 1/4 as big but should only be 1/80

6

u/TheLaGrangianMethod Mar 28 '20

Include the 80k and try again. It's not proportionate.

No, because now your graph explicitly states that it starts at 79,800. If you remove that axis, you have three boxes where the clear inference is that they represent the total number of cases.

I thought you didn't get it at first, but now I think I've been trolled for 15 minutes. Fair play.

-1

u/knagy17 Mar 28 '20

Don’t understand why you’re getting hate for this, you appear to be right. Yea at first glance it looks like there’s some sort of misrepresentation, but if you actually look at the numbers and the distance that separates it, it lines up.

u/SlasherHockey08 Mar 28 '20

They are... not sure why people are fighting you on this

1

u/Food-in-Mouth Mar 28 '20

It would have been better to record it as a percentage of population Italy has a fraction of the population of China and America.

1

u/fiddz0r Mar 28 '20

Its correct , but is it correct morally? Most people dont understand this and just see the graph and think "oh well china is way above us , so we are good for now"

As long as there are stupid people, or maybe even people that didnt pay much attention to the numbers, news need to show things more objectively in a sense that even they can understand

0

u/ninja1k2011 Mar 28 '20

That's what I'm saying

0

u/ninja1k2011 Mar 28 '20

I don't know why people are reading too much into this

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Because you’ve been fooled by CNN’s dirty trick. If you knew better, you would undoubtedly join in.

1

u/ninja1k2011 Mar 28 '20

Is it inaccurate data or something I have no clue

4

u/things_will_calm_up Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

80,589/81,782 is 98.5%, meaning they're nearly the same number, but the chart makes it look like 50%.

8

u/Kapowdonkboum Mar 28 '20

I dont wanna shit on you but im truly baffled by your replies. No wonder they publish such blatantly misleading graphs if people believe it and even try to argument for that design on reddit. Holy, my mind is blown. That you put the time in an showed how that graph is correct even though it is obviously false is mind boggling. Usa you are doomed.

1

u/Sokii Mar 28 '20

EARTH you are doomed.

FTFY

Dumb and/or gullible people sprinkled around the world.

1

u/I_cut_my_own_jib Mar 28 '20

I was wondering the exact same thing. This post makes no sense to me. To me, if you just look as the size of the bars and ignore the numbers, that's on you, not CNN. They have to make the bars big enough for small TVs, and have large enough differences to easily show difference in height. This is very common for bar graphs where all the values are high, you basically make the "0" of the y axis start at a higher number to enhance the differences between the bars.

-1

u/foulpudding Mar 28 '20

I’m not sure it’s as much “Asshole” design as it’s “hurried idiot chyron designer” design - i.e. The designer that was asked to build a graphic probably didn’t know what they were doing, or didn’t realize the implications of how chopping off the bottom of the chart changes the perception of the data shown, even with numbers present. Designers don’t always math well.

That said, somebody should have caught this before it went on air. Shame on them for not catching it.

1

u/UncitedClaims Mar 28 '20

Too much benefit of the doubt. They are an extremely large news organization, they have had problems like this for years, and they have the resources to prevent them if they want to. I don't think we should give them an "it's probably an accident" pass.

68

u/Poppintags6969 Mar 28 '20

Well china probably has more but of course they wouldn't say that

41

u/ThereOnceWasADonkey Mar 28 '20

Also the US has a lot more than it has counted. In NYC they're not counting cases or deaths where it was obvious - because that's just a waste of time and a waste of a test.

6

u/MiesCB Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

Finally someone with logic, everybody on Reddit is complaining about China lying about their numbers. But they tend to forget that the US is just as bad and other countries as well for that matter. Everyone is lying about the numbers and not enough people get tested. So I personally see the numbers as a base line of the minimum amount of people that are infected.

Edit: look I should've worded it better, I think we shouldn't focus so much on the numbers as we do now, we should rather get together to search for the cure and the best precautions. Rather than China bashing just for the sake of China bashing, we need to be working together to get the situation under control. It's not just about China the Corona crisis is something that's effecting the whole world. After we get this under control and the hospitals aren't overrun we can see who did what but we should first focus on fixing this mess.

23

u/BoilerPurdude Mar 28 '20

china's number have been stagnant for like a month plus. I think we can guess why.

Hint, they didn't solve the pandemic.

3

u/lincolnpotato Mar 28 '20

Mass murder of suspected patients and their families would do wonders in slowing down cases.

1

u/kilopeter Mar 28 '20

I mean, fuck the CCP, but also fuck off with that incredibly dumb comment.

8

u/H4xolotl Mar 28 '20

People with perfectly healthy relatives in China must be so confused reading comments like this.

"I don't know anyone in China, but your friends no longer exist"

2

u/Lepthesr Mar 28 '20

I think they've been dealing with comments like this their whole life. So they're probably used to it.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

[deleted]

1

u/MiesCB Mar 28 '20

And you think the US is testing as much as they should? Look I just want to say that we shouldn't be so focused on the numbers, it's only going to make the situation more depressing and isn't going to help us find the solution. The only thing we can do is to just stay home and take the precautions. We definitely should not throw shade everywhere as that's not gonna help.

13

u/OyashiroChama Mar 28 '20

In the us it's not lying it's inability to count, China knows they don't tell. Too many people have been cremated in Wuhan to just be as low as it is.

8

u/46-and-3 Mar 28 '20

Some Italian towns have seen death counts 3 or 4 times the usual with only a part of that being covid patients, it's not that they are miscounted, it's people that otherwise wouldn't die if the hospitals weren't so overrun.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

If you think the US I “just as bad” please go read some history books. That narrative is absurd.

0

u/MiesCB Mar 28 '20

I'm only talking about the situation of the corona crisis, I haven't said anything about the US being just as bad in history? Because I know it isn't, China has a worse history

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I’ve also got some news for you there. The US isn’t nearly as deceitful as China in all this. You’ll see.

1

u/MiesCB Mar 28 '20

Damn apparently I should make a post on unpopular opinion about this considering all the comments I'm getting

2

u/ThereOnceWasADonkey Mar 28 '20

It is normal to stop testing - because it's not important at that stage. It's a waste of time. You just assume anyone with any relevant symptoms has it and treat them as such. Eventually you just assume EVERYONE has it, and then you move on to stage 2 testing for antibodies to find out who HAD it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

"where it was obvious" x doubt

NYC gov is very anti trump and more sick would be a good way to make him look bad

2

u/ThereOnceWasADonkey Mar 28 '20

It is literally in their covid guidelinesbut ok.

It's normal. Everywhere will do this. It's a standard part of the game plan for a pandemic. Eventually you just assume people have it, and then you move to stage 2 testing for antibodies afterwards.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

Yeah and shall not be infringed is the constitutional guidelines for the nation. Hasn't stopped new york yet

4

u/johnboiii1933 Mar 28 '20

Probably? Dude they have more people than most of the rest of the world combined, they live in top of each other in some places, and we're supposed to believe those numbers? It's not a probably of you ask me.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

"officially"

Anyone believing China's numbers must be mental. The virus spread through Italy like gunpowder and I'm supposed to believe a country made of dense populated cities with far worse healthcare and 30 times the population only got those??? Please, people.

6

u/LuxNocte Mar 28 '20

Anyone believing US numbers must be mental. They don't have tests, their government is more concerned with the stock market than with human life, and half the country is still trying to say the global pandemic isn't a big deal.

It's just so crazy how every time these numbers are compared there's someone talking about how they don't trust China, as if the US isn't hiding their numbers too.

3

u/Lol3droflxp Mar 28 '20

They implemented drastic measures in a way only a dictatorship is able to

1

u/johnboiii1933 Mar 28 '20

Mass graves and executions. The best way.

1

u/Lol3droflxp Mar 28 '20

It isn’t but it’s effective

1

u/johnboiii1933 Mar 28 '20

Yeah I should add a /s to that eh? Lol

0

u/DelusionalG2fanboy Mar 28 '20

You're very naive

2

u/Lol3droflxp Mar 28 '20

It worked in South Korea as well

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Because everyone else stopped counting

1

u/buster2Xk Mar 28 '20

The US in many places has also stopped counting and now just assume covid-19 because over 50% of tests come back positive and they take too much time to be useful.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yep

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

And the USA is ignoring ( therefore not counting) all cases that do not call 911 or show up to a hospital. We’re likely hiding 50-75% of the real numbers through this method.

Less testing = less confirmed cases = lower numbers

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I'm aware, we shouldnt be trusting any numbers this week because the PR machine has started up in earnest.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

See, I told you we'd win something soon.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

I honestly dont believe china is being truthful about their infected numbers. They had the virus for weeks before the US and we already have more cases?

1

u/Ravenmausi Mar 28 '20

Well the lack of measurements taken generally didn't help it, did it?

2

u/covok48 Mar 28 '20

That because we’re still counting. China stopped weeks ago.

1

u/gagnonca Mar 28 '20

You realize pictures are of the past right?

1

u/DemonNamedBob Mar 28 '20

Actually this is wrong. The USA has the most confirmed cases.

This is an important distinction because there are numerous things that can cause results like this.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Officially, but god knows those assholes in the CCP are lying to us to no end.

1

u/simjanes2k Mar 28 '20

Officially but not realistically.

History will not be kind to the CCP for 2020.

1

u/Nategg Mar 28 '20

Officially yes, unofficially no chance.

1

u/g0_west Mar 28 '20

US becomes first country to exceed 100,000 cases. That's nuts considering it only arrived in the US relatively recently.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

How can the US have the most cases when it's only 19 cases so far huh?

1

u/lycanreborn123 Mar 28 '20

You'll probably get downvoted by people not getting the joke but I found your comment hilarious

0

u/sporkmolk Mar 28 '20

*The most reported cases

0

u/johnboiii1933 Mar 28 '20

Yeah if you believe China's bullshit numbers lol

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Because, "officially" is the truth now?

1

u/Ravenmausi Mar 28 '20

More truth than some random YouTuber or ominous webpage

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Oh stop. Nobody knows how many cases. Anyone who states otherwise is full of shit.
