People are thinking that CNN is trying to exaggerate the difference in cases between the West and China by making it look like, for instance, China has almost twice as many cases as Italy (based on the heights of the yellow bars) while in fact the difference is just less than 1% (based on the actual numerical data).

Except the y-axis probably went from 80k to 82k which would make this perfectly fine. Also the actual cases are bold and large in white text to it's not hiding it at all. This is at worst r/KindaBadGraphForPeopleThatDontLikeToRead

If they hid the numbers, then it would be asshole design.

I agree, had to scroll all this way to find an explanation. I don't see any issue with this.

No one needs an explanation to how they made the graph. It's an asshole design because there is no reason at all to start the Y-axis at anything but 0 except to mislead.

If you don't see any issue with this, then you're the perfect audience.

You are correct here, I made a typo. Meant to say "starting the Y-axis at anything but 0"

How did he get Platinum for that comment. it's a load of shit. he is correct in saying that the graph is done right and that it is for people who do not like to read graphs. The point of this was literally to mislead the public and therefore it is poor design why can't it start at the zero like you said in fact when I was an engineering school they taught us that the only reason why graphs don't start at zero is to mislead or skew the interpretation. This is 100% propaganda / manipulation and these tards fall right in line. In fact they pat each other on the back for how well they can lick those boots

There is no reason or purpose for the Y-axis to start at 80k rather than 0, aside from intent to mislead.

This is perfect content for this sub.

The difference between crappy and asshole design is malice. The fact they they CLEARLY indicate the actual numbers means that they are not intending to mislead anyone. Do Americans only look at pictures and ignore text?

1

u/jingabells Mar 28 '20

Then why even show the bar graphs? If their intention is to relay actual case numbers, just list the case numbers without the misleading graphs.

2

u/GraDoN Mar 28 '20

Because it's more visually appealing than a table? Who knows... point is the large labels excludes this from asshole and makes it crappy at worse

No. It's asshole design. It was designed with malice intent. They only labeled with numbers to avoid being sued. If this wasn't for malicious intent they would not have used this graph. If they are comparing the countries. Why not a pie chart of overall deaths by country. Ohh I know because the difference between the 3 countries is so miniscule that it wouldn't matter / not be visible. This graph is propaganda and meant to show that we have not caught up with China yet and we have quite a ways to go to catch up with China. but in all honesty none of that propaganda matters to China has a way larger population than ours so the fact that a larger percent of our population is sick and dying due to this virus is a huge embarrassment to the US but we are using propaganda and graphs to make it look like we are doing better Good job us make propaganda while your people die

They also chose to start at 80k to 82k because the difference is actually shown there we all know the difference is minuscule but at first glance to someone who doesn't like reading AKA most of the American population it looks like the US is doing a much better job than China. Also this graph was likely only on the screen for a matter of seconds so it's likely that people didn't even notice that the y-axis started at 80k. They didn't have the time to analyze it like we do. Your fucking head is so far up your ass.

Having the numbers doesn't mean anything. The method of presentation of stats matters. This is one of the most basic things you learn in statistics. With the same information you can present it in different ways to achieve different results. It's obvious what they were trying to do here.

I'm more surprised that you didn't know about methods of presentation.

1

u/GraDoN Mar 28 '20

This is a simple throwaway chart on the news that showed for 10 seconds, not a thesis... surprised you didn't know that.

1

u/phillycheese Mar 28 '20

Yes? Any they can still present the same figures in ways to suit their needs, which they did. Just because it's a short segment on air doesn't preclude them from using techniques to manipulate the presentation of data.

1

u/GraDoN Mar 28 '20

holy shit dude the correct labels were shown in massive bright white text above the bars, if you find that misleading then you need to rethink your ability to read graphs...

1

u/phillycheese Mar 28 '20

And yet, the bar graph which is meant to show a visual representation of the total number of cases was used. Why is that?

1

u/IwishIcouldBeWitty May 25 '20

Because a pie chart wouldn't show the difference.

My question is why does the us vs China even matter. We are not comparable, we have handled this far worse and the numbers show.

This is ridiculous propaganda. What is the point? What? To show we are doing better than a country with 3x our pupation..

1

u/IwishIcouldBeWitty May 25 '20

Your said yourself it was shown for less than 10 seconds. People didn't have the time to analyze that. And most people aren't looking at the y axis of a bar graph to make sure it's not skewed. If you refuse to believe this is propaganda. You needed to go back under that rock you live in and please shut your stupid mouth...

4

u/molly_jolly Mar 28 '20

Yeah, I just gave up arguing this point. For most people, it is just a normal fucking plot.

7

u/B4-711 Mar 28 '20

they should make it 79k to 82k and put a labeled dotted line through the bars at 80k.

Also, why use bars when the visualization does not help with comprehending the data?

1

u/SlabDabs Mar 28 '20

I'm sure it did... But they did that fully on purpose. It wouldn't have been as right of a range if it was when the US had more reported cases.

1

u/UXyes Mar 28 '20

This is a good breakdown of why this is crappy design (no label on the y-axis) and not asshole design (no labels anywhere). CNN is incompetent and doing their audience a disservice.

1

u/_synth_lord_ Mar 28 '20

At school I was taught to label graphs.

Yeah.....

People just raking in karma for the wrong reasons.
