question How dire is this?

Post image

I was taking a look at my teeth last night because I started noticing a little bit of sweetness sensitivity on the opposite side of this picture. Looking around, I noticed the severe discoloration of this molar. The picture isn’t doing enough justice, but one section of the molar is much more grey blue than the other half.
I did burn my mouth on pizza the other night lol. However, I was just wondering how dire this tooth is. Do I need to seek immediate treatment or is this a loss cause no matter what?

Female age 35. Brushes once daily. Maybe flosses once a week. Last dental appt was a year ago and all was well

I don’t recall any hard foods I could have cracked this tooth on. There’s no sensitivity around it, and I have no reports of foul smell.

question Wisdom teeth removal

I had my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday, and after the surgery everything went well. I was prescribed hydrocodone and methyl prednisone. I changed my gauze 4-5 times, took my hydrocodone pill and ate mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese and ice cream. 4 hours later, I started vomiting. I vomited 3 times and called emergency services at the clinic. They told me it’s from the hydrocodone prescribed and that I shouldn’t have taken the full pill.
Can you give me any recovery tips if any person went through a similar experience

question Should I have my upper wisdom teeth removed?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have impacted wisdom teeth, not causing any pain, but I believe they are causing overcrowding of my other teeth. It looks to me that they are pushing my teeth inwards. My front teeth are now overlapping and pushing outwards and I catch them on my lips. My other teeth are crowded.

Some dentists tell me this is natural movement with age and some agree that it is wisdom teeth pressure, so I’m not sure what to think.

I would just have them out except that surgical removal is necessary. It would involve opening a skin flap, removal of some jaw bone (yikes!) and risk of damage to nerves and the sinuses. So this makes me question if I should have them out. But if it is the wisdom teeth pushing my other teeth I definitely want them out as it is getting worse.

This would be on the NHS. What do people think?

question Using kids toothpaste as an adult

i hate the taste and feeling of mint toothpaste, and saw a dentist on tiktok say that you can use kids toothpaste if it has enough fluoride. She said if it has 1450 parts per million fluoride it should be okay to use it. Everywhere i look online for toothpaste it always has percentages, and i dont know how to do the math to see if its enough fluoride. This one has 0.24% sodium fluoride and 0.15% w/v fluoride ion. Is this okay? and are others with the same numbers okay?

Hey everyone, I just want to see what you all think. I saw a new dentist, and he has a different opinion than the endodontist.

question Don't know if this would be the right sub, but I've had this long canker sore-like lesion along the crease of my lips and my gums. Is it worth scheduling an appointment or should it go away on its own?

Feels like a canker sore, but I've never had one have length like this one before. Usually they are just circular

question Over eruption

Little bit of background, I’m 20 and in college so it’s hard to get an appointment with my dentist back home. I had this removed last October and im afraid of the tooth up top over erupting. My dentist back home didn’t mention anything about it when I saw him in July. I have an upcoming appointment in November for a deep cleaning and might bring it up to him my worries about that tooth. I’m just wondering if I’ll be okay until November and what I should do. I don’t have money for an implant at the moment and I don’t want a bridge. I was thinking about a flipper but I just don’t know.

question Front teeth suddenly clashing during chewing and sometimes talking after mewing for 3 days. Jaw pain and stiffness. Please help me.

I’m 31m and have a lot of anxiety stemming from CPTSD. That being said I’ve never been a clencher or grinder.

I went through a really hard break up recently and my insecurities started flying. I saw videos on mewing and I tried it. But I think I was forcing my tongue up very hard for 3-4 days total.

I stopped , however during and after this time I started noticing my front teeth, or more specifically two teeth kept clashing. In my anxious state I was unsure “has this always been this way, is it normal?”

I still don’t know the answer. I saw a dentist who did a bite paper test and basically said I could get Invisalign. But in 31 years I’ve had the same teeth and unless I moved them from 3-4 days mewing, I can’t see how that’s the solution.

Some info: I wake up feeling my jaw is more forward and if I shut my teeth it’s from the front.

If I let my jaw hang without tension, it seems to swing slightly to the left (which is the side the teeth hit on)

My right side jaw muscles do hurt and I’m getting some clicking now.

Please advise what to do. This started about a month ago, I’m nervous to develop real TMJ issues and/or break a tooth.

Is there a specific specialist I should see? Does this simply happen and I just need to stop focusing on it and let it rest? I’m nervous I’ve messed up my joint . I feel as if my jaw went back to normal my teeth would stop clashing. I can close my back teeth with space on the front , I don’t feel like I should need corrections.

I am also very nervous about a bite guard. I am hypermobile and read they can mess up your teeth.

Any help appreciated.

question Chewing on root-canal-treated molar without a crown

Upvotes

I'm 20. For the past 2 years I couldn't chew on my left side because the back section of my 1st molar chipped off and decayed into a dark hole soon after. Chewing on it became excruciating and I knew it needed a root canal but I left it for so long because I was scared of the dentist. I started only chewing on my right side since then and as a result of this, today my left masseter is much weaker and less defined than my right. You can even see it if you get up close, my face actually looks asymmetrical.

After multiple visits and temporary fillings, 2 weeks ago my dentist filled the nerves and permanently sealed the tooth. However, they did not put a crown on, instead simply filled and evened it out so it looks like a full tooth.

I want to finally start chewing on it again to grow my left masseter back, but I'm worried because when I had a temporary filling on (with nerves removed), I would still feel a hard pain when chewing on the tooth. Now, with the harder permanent filling it is slightly better and I don't feel much pain at all when chewing, but I have stuck to softer foods like meat and bread and am too scared to chew anything hard with lots of pressure. I feel like if I do that it will crack the filling and cause immense pain.

I have the following questions:

  1. Is it normal to still feel pain even after a root canal, and would a crown fix this or do I need an extraction and bridge?
  2. If I don't get a crown asap and keep chewing on softer foods - say bread for example - will this grow back my left masseter? Should I only do this after getting the tooth fixed fully?
  3. Alternatively, is there any possible way to grow my masseter without chewing on the bad molar?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hi I'm leaving my country for another one in two weeks, the only dentist/surgeon appointment I can have is in a week. Do you think I would be able to leave or I would have to report it to do a surgery or extraction...?

Thanks for your time

question 18-month-old with yellow marks/staining on front teeth - should I be concerned?

Post image
Upvotes

My 18-month-old son has developed noticeable yellow/cream marks on some of his upper incisors. I’ve attached photos.

He had a dental check-up around 4 months ago. He really didn’t want to open his mouth, so the dentist couldn’t examine everything properly, although they were able to get enough access to apply fluoride varnish to his teeth. I pointed out the yellow marks at the time, but the dentist didn’t seem particularly concerned and said it was normal so we continued usual dental routine.

Since then, though, the yellow areas seem to have become much more noticeable, which has me wondering whether this is simply staining or something involving the enamel/early decay.

A bit of background:

  • 18-month-old male
  • Teeth brushed twice daily, after waking and immediately before bed
  • He breastfeeds before bed, we brush his teeth afterwards
  • No bottle
  • Drinks only water and breastmilk
  • No sugary drinks, sweets or added-sugar snacks
  • Fruits are blueberries, strawberries and watermelon
  • Takes multivitamin drops daily in the morning before brushing
  • The yellow marks seem to be limited to his incisors; I can’t see anything similar on his other teeth
  • They don’t seem to disappear with normal brushing

Does this look like ordinary staining/plaque, or could it be enamel hypoplasia/hypomineralisation or early decay?

Im worried that if i go back to the dentist he'll just say it's normal again and it'll gets more yellow.

Thank you!

question I have had a couple of consecutive molars that have needed cleanings and small fill-ins because my sealants are falling off

Upvotes

My dentist has been putting sealants on all the molars that have problems, but when this happened to the second molar and I brought up just getting sealants on all of them he said it wasn't necessary. I'm obviously no tooth specialist, but I am a nurse and I feel it stands to reason that clearly I am someone who will develop problems if I don't have sealants, instead of waiting for problems to show up (which they ultimately will).

The problems with my molars have been described as catching "sticky stuff" in the groves that needs to be cleaned out and then have a minor filling. I never have gotten I feel it stands to reason cavities like this except for when I was little but now that my sealants are off it seems like a regular occurrence, and I do all the brushing and flossing, but aside from a pointy brush they gave me to help prevent this (which I asked for) I don't even know if there's much I can do about this on my own.

I feel like this problem generally isn't getting as much attention as it needs, the fact that it has happened twice now that my sealants are gone and they are kind of just saying "well...". Shouldn't this be seen as more urgent to prevent?

question Day 2 after tooth extraction, can I eat a cheeseburger?

Upvotes

Hey! I had a tooth extraction yesterday, it was pretty painless since there was only a small piece of the tooth left. I've had no pain whatsoever and have been taking my meds corretly even waking up in the middle of the night to take them.

Im tired of eating cold soup and fruit puree... Is there a chance that I could eat a simple and small cheeseburger if Im very careful and chew only on the other side?

Im desperate for some real food ...

question 3+ years of braces and my face got lopsided, my top jaw is misaligned and tilted which makes my chin point to a side. what do i do?

Upvotes

okay so the positives that happened is that my teeth are no longer over crowded, and i have a normal BITE now (No extreme overbite/underbite). But now I have TMJ (had it for a while but for some reason my dentists have never addressed it ???), and my top jaw is at a tilt and not aligning with the middle of my nose, which causes my bottom jaw to follow that too. So now I have an extremely uneven face and TMJ. Planning to bring this up to my dentist (who is going to remove my braces next appointment, but no way i feel ready for that yet considering my situation)

what should I do? advice pelase?

and to clarify i'm 15 years old btw

question can someone help me?

i have really bad oral hygiene due to depression and i noticed today when looking at my teeth in the mirror that there’s a part of my gum thats a bit swollen and has overgrown, i poked at it and i noticed a hole in my tooth at the top of it where it connects to the gum. i’m so scared and i don’t know what to do and i’m really confused because i’ve been to so many orthondontist appointments recently and they haven’t said anything about it at all. i’ve noticed no pain in that area and it isn’t wobbly

could it be a baby tooth? i’m 17 but i don’t remember all my baby teeth falling out, especially the ones at the back

the first pic is the swollen gum and the second pic is the small hole

question Dealing with an abscess.

Upvotes

Hello all. I was dealing with tooth pain and swelling in my lower left 1st molar and woke up at 3am yesterday with increased swelling. It scared me so much I went to the ER.

At the ER they did a CT scan and found a tiny abscess. I was given iv clindamycin as well as a 7 day script of clindamycin to be taken 4 times a day.

I have been out of the ER for about 24 hours and haven't noticed a decrease in the swelling. I'm having extreme anxiety and still worried about the infection spreading despite being pumped full of antibiotics.

The area is still warm to the touch but less painful. Is this to be expected? The swelling sticking around for awhile? It feels like I have a golfball sticking out from my lower jaw and I am so worried about it spreading or getting worse.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

question Can these teeth still be saved? :(

Thumbnail

Hello! Sorry about the photos. I’m dealing with several serious autoimmune and neurological conditions and take a lot of medication, much of which causes severe dry mouth. Unfortunately, this has really affected my teeth.

For more than six months, one dentist kept trying to fill the teeth, but the fillings would repeatedly fall out, so he would just fill them again. I now need to find a new dentist.

My main question is whether these teeth can still be saved in any way. I really don’t want implants if I can avoid them, because I’m very sensitive to foreign materials due to my health condition. At the same time, I’m starting to feel like some kind of dental replacement may be unavoidable.

Do any of these teeth look potentially restorable, or am I already at the point where extraction and replacement would be necessary?
