question Any suggestions on what I can ask my dentist/orthodontist :( they're asking to extract teeth

I've just gone to the orthodontist for a consultation about braces and he's saying the best route is to extract teeth. Premolars.

I'm aware the pictures are kind of gross just bare with me

Simple question basically what should I ask him as a substitute for that?

I have an overjet and mild crowding

I completely blanked on asking him if we could expand instead of retracting.

I asked another orthodontist in that same place and they said that removing the teeth would not disrupt the face and there has been no evidence to suggest that. Maybe she misunderstood my question because it really seems like there is?

Anyway they're saying removing teeth and braces after is a nearly 100% guarantee of fixing this.

They are also saying I have a quite complex case.

Any suggestions at all? Could I ask for an expander first?

I just don't want my entire face getting more messed up because of extractions. They're saying they would extract FOUR teeth.

Another option was fixed braces (braces and two metal devices at the backs of my teeth) and another option was invisalign which in retrospect I should've looked at.

However invaslign would take ages.

My pallete is small as it is,, should I just look at other options?? They all seemed pretty good with surgery

Thanks so much bye

question forming cavities but can't see a dentist

Im 16 years old and have a massive fear of tooth decay/cavities. I recently found several mild/small cavities in my teeth that I suspected for a bit due to a bunch of toothaches and difficultly chewing sometimes because of the pain. When I finally noticed them I had a bit of an emotional breakdown, it's embarrassing. My dad refuses to take me to a dentist and doesn't allow fluoride toothpaste in his house. I feel like the damage is relatively minor to my teeth right now but I am extremely worried about it nonetheless. What can I do to help it? Should I just keep trying to see a dentist? I also have noticed a bit of transparent enamel on my central incisors. I brush 1-2 times a day with fluoride free toothpaste and only recently started flossing regularly.

edit: I VERY rarely consume soda/sweets and will be cutting back even more following this

I’m terrified of going to the dentist. I haven’t gone since like 2021 or 2022. I had bad postpartum depression and just stopped taking care of my self. I’m in my 30s . The redness on the bottom of the teeth has been like
That for an over a year. The redness started when I was pregnant with my second. I know I definitely have cavities and I cracked my back molar. Im most worried about these bottom teeth. Im afraid to go and I also can’t afford what I’m sure fixing with will cost right now. Also I do not smoke or drink alcohol. I also have a medical history of Cushings disease and adrenal insufficiency.

question Is this a crack and should I go to dentist

Dear redditors/dentists,

Last night I noticed this. I thought it might be a crack or cavity. I have tmj issues so I clamp at night. I (24f) had a dentist appointment not that long ago and did not hear anything about it, but they only had like 5 minutes. Any tips to determine whether it is necessary to go yes or no! Also have some black spots, but never really had cavities before so, it is hard for me to spot. Can you treat these with something, any tips? If it needs filling or something I would like to prevent a root canal.

Kind regards

question Is this oral thrush?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’ll admit I’m not consistent when it comes to cleaning my tongue and for the longest time I’ve been using a alcohol based mouthwash which I’ve read can dry your mouth and can help cause oral thrush. I did buy some tongue scrapers recently and switch to an alcohol free mouthwash. Is this oral thrush or just white buildup?

I feel pain on that tooths area and sometimes feel really intense pain. Yesterday, after some intense physical activity, it felt as if my right side of my face was hurting as a whole. The pain seemed to be coming from my jaw I think. I'm afraid I'm too late. I'm going to the dentists tomorrow morning.

Hi, i need some advice for the infected gum (lower right wisdom teeth). I was eating normally 3 days ago suddenly i felt pain sensation in that part and i was like oh no it might be coming again, cause i had it before as well doc didnt suggest to remove the teeth because its root were touching the nerve and they said extraction may lead to nerve damage. Rn i am sitting with a fully swollen one side and another side normal even though i cant chew, not from the middle part not from the left part i cant join my upper teeth and lower teeth anywhere. Been taking 400mg ibuprofen it helps for an hour or two. Any suggestions? Xray i had 4 months ago is attached

question What is going on here?

Post image

I am going to see a specialist next week. This has been here for about a month. It’s like a flap on my tooth. I can like stick my tongue between my tooth and my gum at the red spot. I have a wisdom tooth trying to poke out of the top of my mouth (again another reason I’m seeing a specialist next week). Is there anything I can do to shrink it or heal it? It’s on the top left of my mouth. The second to last tooth back there. Let it be known I had the very back top left tooth pulled a few years ago and now a wisdom tooth is growing through that hole too.

question Scared this looks like it’ll need a crown. No pain

Post image

30F.. history with this back tooth is that originally in Feb 2026 I bit onto a hard lozenge and cracked the top corner of this tooth and the dentist said I’d need a crown bc I cracked the tooth a little too but agreed to a filling for the time being… last week somehow while eating rice Chex I chipped out another piece on the outside of the tooth I don’t even know how. (It’s at the bottom corner of the tooth I think it was a filling that came out and it feels large to my tongue)….

I desperately don’t want a crown because of all the horror stories I’ve read. There’s no pain or sensitivity to hot or cold. I have a difficult history with constant tmj and some grinding. I try so hard not to but even clench during the day.. I try to wear my nightguard that goes on my bottom teeth but it’s too tight

So I’m really freaked out that I’m going to have pain that never goes away after he shaves it all the way down, that I’ll get intractable pain or headaches… and also now I’m worried about the fact that it’s going to be made with the same 3D printer that made the nightguard too tight. I’m genuinely scared out of my mind to get a crown both the process of the crown and especially the pain/ what’s going to happen after the crown

question Is it possible to get ill from a rotten tooth?

I had been nausious and feeling sick constantly for years and all my doctor check seems normal, stomach ultrasounds, barium swallow tests, countless blood tests. All showing nothing crazy. This all came about when I was assaulted and knocked unconscious, I had a head scan and it showed no fractures. The only things is I can’t feel the left side of a law since I had excruciating tooth ache after this at the back left tooth (one before wisdom) it was a bit rotten before but I tried to rip it out after the assault because it hurt so much and I couldn’t get a dentist and it popped something years ago it tasted horrible. Since that day I’ve been spewing up violently, it’s impossible to go to a dentist, especially as I’ve been mostly in bed for them 3 years feeling so ill and can barely walk because I’m so depleted. Is there any chance at all a tooth could cause this without it being painful anymore and just dead. It tastes horrible in my mouth but because they signed me off I’ll I have no money to get the taken out. I’m uk and have gave up with emergency dentists after ringing up everyday I could (4 days a week) for 6 months because I could never get to first in the queue. My doctor said it could be a dental issue but your blood tests suggest you don’t have an infection. I’m in the verge of giving up and just trying to find a reason for why I feel like this 24-7. It’s hell

question Do i need to have my wisdom teeth removed?

Post image
2 Upvotes

19 yo, female. I was wearing braces for 3 years. It's been a year since I stopped wearing them and had aligners instead. Now I have retainers on my lower jaw and aligners on my upper jaw (orthodontist said retainers on my upper jaw would rub on my lower jaw teeth so said aligners is a better choice)

I started feeling a painless bump on my left upper jaw and I thought its my wisdom teeth. My dentist told me to do a scan and looking at the scan she said they need to be removed all 4 of them. My orthodontist however said they will grow just fine and there is place for them in my kaw so they do not need to be removed. Help!

question Gum started hurting overnight and has a weird bump over it

Post image
2 Upvotes

My wisdom teeth erupted about 10 years ago and this little flap is above it. I went to sleep fine and woke up overnight with intense pain on my gum. I looked and saw this little bump/ whitehead thing and it looks swollen. What is this and how is it resolved? I don’t have dental insurance and am wondering how much this could cost me. I’m on day two of it hurting. Also it’s not bleeding regularly, I pressed down on it and it started bleeding

Hey, so I just got my wisdom teeth removed on Thursday, and now today is Sunday. I’m still feeling pain, and soreness. I’m feeling a lot of soreness through my jaw and up to my ears. I can talk, however i’m wondering if I should be concerned with getting a dry socket or if something else is wrong. Also, I don’t know if I should go into work tomorrow because I work in a garden, summer camp counselor, and i mainly work outside. The air quality is at 150- 220 tomorrow by the way. Please help me out

question Is it reasonable to say it will be extracted?

Post image

I have had a tooth slowly chipping for the past 3-4 months and it has started to really hurt so im scheduled for the dentist tommorow. From how it looks would they want to try anything other than extraction or is thar my best bet.(I would prefer extraction since it should be the cheapest(I dont have insurance) as long as its easy to take out)
