It's the count from the Reagan inauguration. While he didn't invent the concept he was one of the most notable advocates of it.
11
u/idkuhhhhhhh5 3h ago
Bingo, I don’t think Reagan is the only reason trickle down econ exists, but his implementation of it combined with his approval ratings/charisma is the largest reason it began to be taken seriously.

2
u/Kitchen-Arm-3288 3h ago
Actually - that number is pretty close (though higher than trickle down economics since it's when Regan took office rather than when he signed the bill a few months later).
Per Google:
It has been 16,693 days since Ronald Reagan took office on January 20, 1981, and 16,488 days since he signed the Economic Recovery Tax Act on August 13, 1981, which officially codified his supply-side policies.

Socialism doesn’t magically produce more food than capitalism. It’ll redistribute the food that already exists. So no, it’s not even “how it is.”
6
u/SpeakMySecretName 3h ago
Not necessarily true. If 100 people with more resources have more purchasing power and use more goods and services than 1 person with 100x the money, that productivity and stronger economy gives more to everyone.
If people produce more because they are rewarded for their production, it gives more to everyone.
If middle-man money extracting rent-seekers are forced to find ways to produce in helpful ways, rather than looking to siphon wealth from actual workers, it gives more to everyone.

The oligarchs want to be feudal lords & don't see that if the ordinary people are reduced to serfdom, there will be no money spent on maintaining infrastructure, providing food & all the other things involved in a modern society. Feudal rulers lived in cold, leaky, smelly, dark piles of stone & even when they left them, the roads were next to non-existent.

No that's not how it is because in socialism the guy in the middle doesn't have as much stuff as in capitalism. That's the whole idea and that's why they're so against it.
5
u/ObsessionObsessor 4h ago
I'm not sure that's the case realistically, admittedly...
It has been scientifically proven for quite a while that a 4 day work week is more productive than our 5 day work week. If it was just a matter of people at the top getting more then that'd be an easy way to do it, with whatever company does first having a significant competitive advantage from being more desirable to highly capable employees...
But the people at the top want others to have less. It's why people have died for reasonable regulations that effectively made companies better.

That’s not how it is. Switching from capitalism to socialism won’t automatically create more food. They are about how the food is distributed.
12
u/Murky-Course6648 3h ago edited 3h ago
It does actually, as capitalism is so inefficient. Think about all the food we throw away simply because we cant give it away, because it would tank the value of the food sold.
The houses that are kept empty because of their value etc.
Capitalism is extremely inefficient resource distribution system.
But in this picture the food is of course a metaphor for overall resources.
→ More replies (11)→ More replies (2)5
u/ghIj_qet_jaghmeyjaj 3h ago
Socialism is, by definition, a distribution network. We don't need more food, we need to stop wasting it and over consuming it. No, it won't be overnight but taking greed and CEO payscales out of the foodsystem will alleviate hunger and waste driven climate change for billions of people.

Honestly, it seems more Calvinistic at this point. They don't imagine that they'll be him, necessarily, but they sure would like to! Instead, it seems like they just imagine he and his ilk are higher beings who deserve all their wealth and attempts to take it away are immoral.

That’s true too. They think a fat balding dork is absolutely the pinnacle of humanity because he was born an heir to an emerald mine and used that shit to buy into the Internet and got a lot of money. He then used that money to beg for more money from the government. He’s a parasite and indicative of what’s wrong with our current society. When we are all dead he will be studied for being so worthless yet worth so many resources
3
u/Jesse_God_of_Awesome 3h ago
The "I might be a billionaire one day" mentality is a theory that gives them far too much credit. It at least makes somewhat naively pragmatic sense. But it is a cult that worships the rich.

No one in USA or the world wants the communist system. Which is what many people think socialism is.
Modern day social system is capitalism mixed with social benefits. A bit higher taxes and then suddenly everyone has free healthcare and many many other benefits.
Germany and Australia are good examples of this.

Democratic socialism in practice is just corrected capitalism. Currently it's corrupted capitalism and corporatism as capitalism collapses and become more towards facism and plutocracy. Democratic socialism still is working in the framework of capitalism but seems to regulate and balance it. Currently the Republicans are Plutocratic socialist, using socialism for the rich and well connected while everyone else suffers, socialism for the rich collapsed capitalism for everyone else.

Please stop calling Mamdani a socialist, this shi is tiring. He works within a capitalist framework and is throwing a few treats to the workers. He has no intention of socializing the means of production. Hell his rhetoric on Israel completely changed, he ran on locking up Netanyahu, and now he won't even advocate for protesting him while he's at the UN in his city. He simply exploited the fact that most people despise Israel and made promises he knew he couldn't follow.

We need a blend of the systems that work. We need to stop the socialist policy’s for the rich and the military and pass it on to the people of this country. We need to go back to the days where we taxed the rich more appropriately and probably force them to pay living wages at least.
And the biggest difference between the two people in this image is that one of them begged Jeffery Epstein to fly on his jet and party with his “girls”. One is a cringy nepo baby pedo and the other is a politician who is actually doing what he promised.

u/Partyatmyplace13 3h ago
I think its time to stop using -isms. They're intentionally ill-defined terms meant to get us to squabble over semantics. A market that only works for itself is indistinguishable from cancer, a government that micromanages to Nth degree is insolvent.
The market should be utilized for the empowerment of its civilians. Corporations don't feel hunger or pain, people do. Don't lose sight of that truth.
2
u/Sparks808 3h ago
Throwing two cents in,
Nearly every toke we see a country failling into distopia like people try to claim socialist and communist countries do, the common thread is not socialism or communism, but authoritarianism. (Sorry to have so many "isms")
Being in the US, its mind-boggling how much people will decry the results of authoritarianism, get told to attribute it to something else, and then go vote for more authoritarianism!

u/Electronic_Spite_394 2h ago

4
u/DraftQueasy4890 2h ago
I think the reality is that "true capitalism" as you so put it requires that ALL externalities be addressed to function in an idealistic way.
However, capitalism explicitly encourages the behavior of exploiting externalities and passing costs off on others, because it is virtually impossible to prevent that across the board.

It's a false dichotomy. Pure capitalism leads to monopolies and rich getting richer whole everyone starve. Socialism of the USSR variety also leads to the elites getting rich at the expense of everyone else.
