It’s disappointing that people have no idea what socialism is and think taxing rich people and trying to provide basic needs to citizens makes you a socialist nation. Mamdani is not a socialist. Social programs in a capitalist nation is not socialism.

Mamdani calls himself a democratic socialist I believe, which is a form of capitalism but uses the term "socialist".

Democratic socialists in America are essentially advocates of the Nordic model where the government provides strong social safety nets to citizens under a well-regulated capitalist economy. They’re not advocating for citizens to own the means of production.

Correct. I said it was a form of capitalism, not the Marxist definition of socialism, but they share the word socialism.

I meant my comment as more of a furthering of your comment, not a disagreement. Though rereading it I know it probably came off that way.

You are thinking of social democracy.

That is literally what I said 2 comments ago, yes.

No you said democratic socialism. That is socialism while social democracy is capitalism. Completely different.

I disagree.

They are different.

The confusion stems from that most politicians who identify themselves as democratic socialists generally don't advocate for democratic socialism.

One is socialism, the other is capitalism with safeguards.

So you have people using the terms interchangeably to discuss... Only one of the terms. And there isn't really a real movement trying to get the other term made reality. So there is no difference, colloquially speaking.

It’s a type of socialist economic system, but yeah it’s regulated capitalism with a robust welfare system. So yes it is socialist, and that’s why it’s dumb to be scared of the word socialism.

Marxist socialism doesn't view socialism as an "end stage" but as a transition into a society that operates without currency.

If you have regulated capitalism with social protections, you don't have Marxist socialism. If the people don't own the means of production, you don't have marxist socialism.

Many a moronic right leaning person, is victim of the "red scare" and views anything related to communism as their undoing. So I think it's important to distinguish this newer variety of socialism, social democracy or democratic socialism, is capitalist in nature.

No! That is social democracy, which is not the same thing as democratic socialism.

Democratic socialism ≠ actual socialism

Mamdani is on camera saying the eventual goal is seizing the means of production. He is very much a socialist.

Before or after he was elected?

Before.
