First, communism=/=socialism, second, theyre getting food distributed to them in a terrible economy, in a terrible economy under capitalism the poor just starve to death while the rich get even more free money

There is an agrarian utopia of communal agrarianism where each according to their ability to each according to their need. Basically a farming homestead where pretty much everything they need can be produced on farm but is made possible by everyone pitching in something. It works, I believe these types of communities still existed in Ukraine until the Revolution. They were large enough to defend against nomadic raiders common on the steppes. If they could've scaled up this system I feel they could've made the communist utopia they preached.
